When newly sworn in Mayor (for a second time) Chris Amorose Groomes was 8 years old, she'd ride her bike down Sawmill Road to Tuller Fruit Farm for a delicious apple fritter on Saturday mornings.   She'd see maybe 10 or 12 cars on the long ride as Sawmill, then, was just a two-lane road.  Today, we know how busy Sawmill is and Home Depot now stands on the fruit farm property.    It's that kind of history and institutional knowledge she brings to the job along with her years on City Council. But the Mayor's family also has a steadfast dedication to City service, and it's instilled in her: her mother founded the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, helped write the original charter for the City and her father served as Dublin's Vice Mayor.    Mayor Amorose Groomes talks about that plus her vision to keep Dublin on the path for global leadership in sustainability, fiber to the home, quality of life and transportation. (hint: we're in the running for a possible major upgrade to Amtrak train service)

Dúshlán roimh an Rialtas i mBuiséad 2024. 'The Government faces a major challenge in relation to the 2024 Budget' says Finance Minister Michael McGrath. 'Tá dúshlán mór roimh an Rialtas maidir le Buiséad 2024' a deir an tAire Airgeadais Michael McGrath. The minister pointed out that it is not easy on the one hand to give the appropriate support to the people of the country and to the economy, but on the other hand to ensure that inflation does not worsen. Thug an t-aire le fios nach bhfuil sé éasca ar lámh amháin an tacaíocht chuí a thabhairt do phobal na tíre agus don eacnamíocht, ach a chinntiú ar an lámha eile nach dtéann an boilsciú in olcas. Michael McGrath was speaking at the annual Dublin Chamber of Commerce dinner last night. Bhí Michael McGrath ag labhairt ag dinnéar bliantúil Chumann Tráchtála Bhaile Átha Cliath aréir. He said that the economy of the country was generally strong and stable against anything that has gone out of order in the international markets. Dúirt sé go raibh eacnamaíocht na tíre go ginearálta láidir agus seasmhach i gcoinne aon ní atá imithe as cor ar na margaí idirnáisiúnta. The minister also referred to the strength of the labor market here. Thagair an t-aire freisin do láidreacht an mhargaidh saothair anseo. 'The corporate tax that has been given to the state has grown dramatically over the past few years' he says 'but this will not last forever'. 'Tá fás as cuimse tagtha ar an gcáin chorparáideach atá tugtha don stát le roinnt blianta' a deir sé 'ach ní mhairfidh sé seo i gcónaí'. 'To that end we cannot use that money to put towards permanent expenditure' he says. 'CHuige sin ní féidir linn an t- airgead sin a úsáid le cur i dtreo an chaiteachais bhuan' a deir sé. 'The government has also set aside money which it says is for capital projects' says Michael McGrath. 'Tá airgead curtha i leataobh ag an rialtas freisin a deir sé ar mhaithe le tograi caipitiúla' a deir Michael McGrath. Two weeks from next Tuesday (October 10) the budget will be presented to the Dáil. Coicís ón Mháirt seo chugainn (10Deireadh Fómhair) a chuirfear an buiséad faoi bhráid na Dála.

In the world of social media, what is being said about your business can make or break you. How you access these insights in a timely manner makes all the difference. In 2009, when Twitter was still relatively unknown and Instagram was not yet born, Stephen O'Leary spotted an opportunity and started to build a company to do just that – give businesses an ear to the ground on social media.“With no savings, no plan, no experience in running a business, I decided the need exists, there is a gap, I'm going to give this a go” And so Olytico was born – an online news media and social media monitoring and analysis company that aims to help people make better informed decisions. After a slow and difficult start, the company started to scale incredibly quickly in line with the popularity of social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and the many others that have launched in the last decade.   In this episode of The EY CEO Outlook Podcast series, Stephen O'Leary tells host Richard Curran how he transitioned from journalism, software sales and business development, to eventually founding his own company, Olytico. They also discuss:  ·        What Elon Musk's move to buy Twitter means for the company and its users.  ·        Forthcoming regulation of social media companies and how it might change them ·        What he learned about the kind of salesperson he was, and why that led him to him start his own company.  ·        The future of anonymity and content moderation on social media platforms ·        Becoming the youngest ever president of Dublin Chamber of Commerce in 2023

Google Ireland has announced it is partnering with Dublin Chamber on a series of training workshops for SMEs as part of its Grow with Google initiative. Kicking off on Thursday 17th September, the workshops, which are free to attend to Dublin Chamber members, will provide SMEs with practical training to help them grow and enhance their online presence. Grow with Google brings free training to Small and Medium Enterprises to help them grow their business successfully online, and provides free resources and support to help them overcome the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a long term supporter of Irish SMEs, Google wants to ensure Irish businesses can gain access to the digital skills training they need to help them navigate through these uncertain times and find future opportunities for growth. Taking place over three months, a team of Google experts will deliver the workshops via YouTube, with the first live workshop focusing on how Google Trends can help businesses gain a better understanding of their consumers and turn these insights into well-informed, actionable decisions. A live Q&A will conclude each of the webinars and businesses are encouraged to participate and take advantage of the expert speakers’ knowledge and insights. Commenting on the partnership, Mary Rose Burke, CEO of Dublin Chamber said, “We are delighted to announce this partnership between Google and Dublin Chamber. From listening to our members, we know that many businesses in Dublin are looking to enhance their digital skills. Through the Google training workshops, we hope to give our members the confidence to integrate and use digital skills effectively in the everyday running of their business and to ensure ongoing success as we face an unstable economic environment as a result of Covid-19.” Commenting, Damian Lynch, Head of Google Customer Solutions Ireland, said, “By partnering with Dublin Chamber we hope to equip business people with the digital skills and expertise to drive business growth by increasing their presence online. Google is committed to supporting Irish SMEs in their recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 and we hope that these workshops will supply Dublin Chamber members with life-long online skills that will help them overcome the current challenges they are facing and help to navigate their way through the digital transformation process.” Grow with Google aims to help people and businesses acquire the skills needed to embrace the opportunities that technology presents in today’s working world. As part of this, Google has committed support for 60,000 Irish SMEs and to provide free training to 40,000 people in digital skills by the end of 2021. Mary McKenna opens up about her incredible journey over the past 23 years of building the travel business that we all know and love Tour America and Cruise Holidays. This year Mary was selected as a finalist on the EY Entrepreneur of the year program with 23 other business people. Mary expressed her tremendous pride in this achievement and discussed her relationship with her Father and how he Mentored her, before mentoring was cool or emotional intelligence was a thing, he advised his daughter to ‘find what you love’ the passion and do that. Her father passed away in her early 20’s and it forced her to grow up overnight. Mary’s sister was involved in a horrific car accident and during this time their Dad went to hospital for a procedure and tragically passed away. Mary maps this moment to the beginning of her resilience and as the knocks came in business as they do she learned to take them and get back up again and again. These blows involved 9/11 where her business took a massive hit and she was forced to let 11 staff go. She does admit to feeling sorry for herself for a few weeks. Then she decided to launch Cruise Holidays and hired 10 of the 11 back. I think the cool term for this is a ‘Pivot’Resilience is a must to survive and Mary urges us to work on the Business not in the Business. Everything is about the core values of the Company and creating the right company culture. Culture starts with the leader, be happy in your work and be kind to each other, leave moods at home. In 2012 Mary hired through JobsBridge a government scheme which was abused by other businesses, Mary reminds us that you ‘only die with your conscience’ and gave her team the freedom to be creative and to innovate. Some more knocks later more ups and downs Mary did not follow the crowd during the recession instead of making staff redundant and cutting Marketing she doubled the spend on Marketing and grew sales by 70%Finding opportunities during the recession Mary purchased an amazing premises forThe Cork Tour America branch. So much gold in this Podcast Survival instincts, a very serious car crash 50/50 chance of surviving. The Ash cloud hits the travel industry. Mentoring is a passion for Mary she is actively involved in mentoring programs. A female program called Going for Growth’ and on the Task force of Dublin Chamber. Mary has a habit of achieving her goals, she writes them down and ticks them off one by one. Today family values are top priority, the team are encouraged to work hard but not to miss out on key family events. Tour America has achieved Deloitte best managed company 9 years running. As a leader she is constantly working on inspiring her team. Her advice to her 20 year old self is to not sweat the small stuff, self care and Health are paramount to success. She compares the connections between Sport and Business on having a succession plan and talent spotting. We just had to give Mary a massive LifeForce Mentors Pat on the Back.
