A former Starbucks shift supervisor in Clovis is suing the coffee giant after he was fired when managers learned he was a registered sex offender. The lawsuit claims Starbucks knew about his conviction when it hired him in 2017 and kept him employed for eight years with no disciplinary issues. His lawsuit claims the firing violated California’s Fair Chance Act, which limits how employers can use criminal history. Starbucks says the claims are without merit and plans to fight the case. Despite a high‑profile student walkout protesting ICE enforcement, Clovis Unified School District did not see a major spike in absences. District data shows 642 unexcused absences on Feb. 10, the day of the protest—fewer than the 707 unexcused absences recorded on a typical school day the following week. The Trump administration’s move to invoke the Defense Production Act to restart California offshore oil operations has ignited a political firestorm. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the decision, accusing Trump of exploiting the Iran war crisis to justify actions that threaten California’s coastline and environmental protections. Meanwhile, some California drivers argue that expanded offshore drilling could ease supply pressures and bring relief from punishing gas prices, exposing a sharp divide between economic frustration and environmental risk. Two separate shootings this week raised national security concerns. At Old Dominion University in Virginia, authorities say the gunman was Mohamed Jalloh, a former Army National Guard member previously convicted in 2016 of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. He served about 11 years in federal prison and was released in 2024 before killing one person and wounding two others. In Michigan, an attack at Temple Israel synagogue was carried out by Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon. Ghazali was killed by synagogue security during the attack. At a Pentagon press conference on Friday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth sharply criticized major news outlets—especially CNN—while expressing confidence that the U.S.-led conflict with Iran is nearing a decisive victory. Hegseth accused the media of misrepresenting battlefield progress and promoting what he called misleading or sensational headlines. He claimed Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded, citing steep declines in missile and drone attacks, even as fighting continues and U.S. casualties have mounted. Former Vice President Kamala Harris has canceled several book tour stops, including Sacramento, and KCRA political reporter Ashley Zavala reports that security logistics involving the California Highway Patrol are a key factor. With Harris no longer receiving Secret Service protection, the state has stepped in with a CHP detail—but officials won’t disclose how many officers are assigned or how much the protection is costing California taxpayers. Especially as they travel the world with her on her book tour. The lack of transparency, combined with the complexity of securing public events, has raised questions as tour plans continue to change. There are new questions on Wednesday about the war with Iran and whether the country would consider attacking the United States and California in particular. Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed those reports on Wednesday. “As it relates to drone strikes, we have been aware of that information,” he said. “We have been working collaboratively through the (SOC), which we established right after the war began -- the State Operations Center. Working with the Office of Emergency Services, but also working locally to make sure we transmit any information that we have received.” Kai Trump, the 18-year-old granddaughter of President Donald Trump, brought her Secret Service detail and all her YouTube followers along on a run to luxury grocery store Erewhon, sparking widespread criticism on social media. Fresno and the Central Valley could see temperatures rise as high as 90 degrees by early next week — unseasonably warm weather that may signal a hotter spring and summer this year. JP Kalb, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Hanford office, said the warmer weather is the result of a large pressure system off the California coast and is thwarting rainy weather. And despite the vehicle's smaller stature just shy of 100 feet tall, Firefly Aerospace's Alpha rocket is projected to be widely visible across the West Coast. A faulty 12‑volt battery caused a Cadillac Lyriq EV in Antioch to shut down completely, trapping a 1‑year‑old baby inside while all electronic locks, key fobs, the mobile app, and even OnStar stopped working. After nearly 30 minutes, the family freed the child by using a hidden mechanical key a solution they found through ChatGPT. The governing board for the state’s third-largest school district will discuss eliminating more positions at Wednesday’s meeting, according to the meeting agenda. Investigators contacted the Albuquerque homeowners to gather the home camera footage and information in an effort to track down William Neil McCasland, 68, who vanished without a trace from his home on Feb. 28, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. The attorney general relocated from a Washington apartment to a base in the area within the past month, according to people familiar with the situation. A new study shows that AI can identify the real people behind burner or pseudonymous accounts with surprising accuracy, posing a major threat to online anonymity. Large language models were able to deanonymize 68% of users in the test dataset — and when they did, the identifications were 90% accurate. Researchers from ETH Zurich, MATS, and Anthropic say AI can pull subtle “identity signals” from writing style, behavior patterns, and data matching, essentially breaking the long‑held assumption that burner accounts are safe.
