He earned his M.A. in Philosophy from Colorado State University.Callie is a freelance audio producer and the host of the Queersplaining podcast. They are non-binary trans person. In this episode, I talk to Aaron and Callie about gender and trans issues. When it comes to transgendered folk, we tend to focus on extreme examples that are far removed from reality. Some people think being transgender is a social contagion, while others reject the reality of gender altogether. Callie shares how transitioning has allowed them to become their most authentic self. Aaron sheds light on the issues of consent, autonomy, identity, and medical ethics. Both Callie and Aaron recognize that specific topics can negatively skew public opinion, which is why addressing misconceptions and highlighting the lived experiences of trans men, women, and non-binary individuals are crucial to the conversation.Website: voidpod.com & queersplaining.comTwitter: @ETVPod & @calliegetsit Topics03:15 Introducing Callie05:14 Introducing Aaron08:27 Callie coming out as trans17:06 Ideology over science 23:32 Transphobia is real25:28 Social contagion and moral panic33:29 Pushing the anti-trans agenda 35:56 “Have a trans child or a dead child”41:13 Extreme trans activists47:13 The gender critical movement44:47 The world operates on gender, not sex51:29 What does it feel like to be a trans woman?55:50 Subjectivity of gender and identity1:02:06 Why we gatekeep identities1:06:30 Trans people in sports1:23:58 Sex and gender differences1:32:47 Gender-affirming care1:39:44 Puberty blockers and transitioning 1:42:38 Medical ethics and barriers to access1:49:21 Parental consent vs child autonomy1:52:17 There is harm in waiting and seeing2:07:55 Irreversible changes in puberty2:11:43 Teaching gender in school2:15:26 Wokeness is misappropriated2:17:42 Final thoughts

Aaron Rabinowitz is a philosophy professor at Rutgers, a podcaster (Embrace the Void/Philosophers in Space) and a personal friend of - according to Sturla - the funniest guy in the world, Chris Kavanaugh from Decoding the Gurus. Apart from discussing Chris and his twisted mind they get into the weeds of the moral luck-debate and through Aarons unique perspective look at the Culture War online through this prism. In one of the most important developments in the dynamic between big tech, free speech and media in many years, Elon Musk is buying Twitter for $44bn. Much of the commentary online has devolved into the predictable political shouting matches, and there has been very little engagement with the key questions that this brings up about the nature of moderation, of how to create healthy dialogue and what problems Elon will have to wrestle with in taking Twitter forward. Jim Rutt is the former head of the Santa Fe Institute, and has been involved with online communities since the birth of the internet. He believes that Elon has not fully wrestled with the problem of moderation that he will be taking on with Twitter, a view he explained in his new piece for Quillette, 'Musk & Moderation': https://quillette.com/2022/04/27/musk-and-moderation/  This is a sometimes robust debate and disagreement with Aaron Rabinowitz, a moral philosopher and host of the Embrace the Void podcast. Aaron has spent time wrestling with these same issues, in particular in a famous experiment he ran during the Trump election of 2016 when he created a completely unmoderated discussion group, called Monster island: https://www.skeptic.org.uk/2020/10/monster-island-free-speech-experiment/  Check out Jim's podcast, the Jim Rutt Show: https://www.jimruttshow.com/  And Aaron's podcast Embrace the Void: https://voidpod.com/podcasts

Aaron Rabinowitz identifies as an atheist, skeptic, and philosopher. He's also a faithful trans ally, and considers the adjective “religious” an insult. Acutely aware of his cisheteronormative privilege, he willingly sacrifices himself on the altar of Heterodorx because “my humanity is not being questioned in this particular debate.” The resultant conversation is even more fascinating than it is long (1:46, our longest yet!). Without a God to author morality, does this leave atheists adrift? What is morality, are there absolute moral truths, and how can we know about them? To examine these questions, we are joined by Aaron Rabinowitz, a PhD student in the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, and the host of two podcasts, Embrace the Void and Philosophers in Space. Aaron explains why the absence of a God actually allows for the creation of objective moral systems, something that should correct biases against atheists. He also tells us about whether a true atheist can be immoral or wish that God existed. In the bonus content, available exclusively to supporters on Patreon, we talk with Aaron about the infamous “enlightening round” on his podcast Embrace the Void, where he asks guests whether things like God, races, sandwiches, and fictional characters are “real.”Follow Aaron on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ETVPodCheck out Aaron's workshop, “Morality Without God,” running for three weeks in January: https://evergreen.humanitru.com/web/campaigns/the-innerwork-center~winter-spring-2022?attend=id%3A4465&sharer_id=3509&medium=¬es=Listing+Card&remote_id=RSgyEmbrace the Void podcast: https://voidpod.com/podcasts/Philosophers in Space podcast: https://0gphilosophy.libsyn.com/Check out Nathan's appearance on Embrace the Void: https://voidpod.com/podcasts/2021/7/15/ev-201-defining-racism-with-nathan-alexanderFollow Nathan on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NathGAlexanderNathan's website: https://www.nathangalexander.com/If you find the podcast valuable and want to support it, check out our Patreon page, where you will also find bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/beyond_atheism We are grateful for every contribution.

Ethics are a funny thing. If you asked most people on the street what they believe about what's right or wrong, they probably wouldn't be able to give you a very robust explanation. That's because we don't often spend a whole lot of time thinking about the valance of moral decisions, for most of us it just comes down to our culture and what we feel is the best thing at any given moment. But claims about how we should behave, or about how we know how we should behave, have incredibly broad implications in not just our everyday lives but our world as a whole, so it's well worth our time to think critically about them every now and again. On today's episode we do just that! I have the pleasure of being joined by Dr. Aaron Rabinowitz, professor of philosophy at Rutgers University and host of the Embrace the Void Podcast. Aaron and I discuss the how's and the whys of what it means to be good in a world without God, or anything else supernatural, and the different ways that different people can come to very similar ideas about ethical principles, even if we start from different places. www.reasoningaloud.org/arronrabinowitz

What does it mean to have luck? Good luck, or bad? Is luck something that only happens selectively, or is our entire existence a kind of luck that we've had zero control over? And if that's true - what does it mean for our society? What does it say about our educational system, our criminal justice system, and how we treat and empathize with each other? What does it mean for our world if all of us are exactly where we are due only to pure chance? Very roughly if consciousness does not admit of borderline cases, then we will have to suppose that some utterly precise micro-level change—down to an exact arrangement of particles—marked the first appearance of consciousness (or the change from non-conscious to conscious embryo/foetus), and it is going to seem arbitrary that it was that utterly precise change that was responsible for this significant change in nature.” And here’s Aaron’s conversation with Hunter (https://podbay.fm/podcast/1213974770/e/1565959253) Follow Aaron on Twitter @ETVpod and Emerson @waldenpod Listen to ichika Nito here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt0pxG5dn8U) Rate the show on iTunes here (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/walden-pod/id1474408172) Support on Patreon here (https://www.patreon.com/waldenpod) Listen to our sister show Counter Apologetics here (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/counter-apologetics/id1273573417?mt=2) Subscribe to CA and Walden Pod on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqBy2TfJbYXjqBL3cQOFUig) Contact me at emersongreen@protonmail.com or on Facebook (http://facebook.com/counterapologeticspodcast)

We answer one of the more common challenges issued to panpsychists: some variation of “Show me the evidence.” We discuss whether panpsychism can be tested, our theory of mind module, emergence, Descartes's conception of matter, Occam’s Razor, and the fact that consciousness is always inferred, never observed. “We can but infer sentience rather than verify it, and people will differ in their guessed inferences: some might stop sentience at the lobster limit, others might stop at the beetle border – but why stop at all? If one demands a stop, the determining criterion must be established.” - Peter Sjöstedt-H (https://highexistence.com/panpsychism-3-reasons-why-our-world-brimming-sentience/) “How do the combined material objects that make up a human body change from a state of being non-conscious to a state of being conscious? There are three possible answers: i) They don’t. Human beings are not conscious. ii) A miracle happens. A conscious state ‘emerges’ from non-conscious matter. iii) They don’t. Consciousness already exists within the matter our brains are made from.” - Tim Bollands (https://twitter.com/ATBollands/status/1163828655778410502) Can Panpsychism be tested? - Philip Goff (https://conscienceandconsciousness.com/2019/07/26/can-panpsychism-be-tested-and-does-it-matter/) [Conscience and Consciousness] Emerson Green and Aaron Rabinowitz debate panpsychism on The Right to Reason podcast: https://player.fm/series/the-right-to-reason-2362355/panpsychism-debate New music used with permission from ichika nito (https://nitomusic.bigcartel.com/product/ichika-guitar-loop-pack-1) ichika Nito’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zklF31kD1eI) Transcripts available at emersongreenblog.wordpress.com (https://emersongreenblog.wordpress.com/) Rate the show on iTunes here (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/walden-pod/id1474408172) Support on Patreon here (https://www.patreon.com/waldenpod) or if you prefer to give a one-time donation, you can do so with Venmo (@emersongreenpodcast) Listen to our sister show Counter Apologetics here (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/counter-apologetics/id1273573417?mt=2) Subscribe to CA and Walden Pod on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqBy2TfJbYXjqBL3cQOFUig) Contact me at emersongreen@protonmail.com or on Facebook (http://facebook.com/counterapologeticspodcast)

He specializes in ethics, metaethics, and AI. His work focuses on developing a secular moral realism that is compatible with the problem of moral luck. He also hosts two philosophy podcasts: Philosophers in Space and Embrace the Void. The goal of both shows is to make philosophy accessible for everyone, using science fiction and existential horror. In this episode, we discuss metaethics, and moral realism. We first go through the definitions of moral realism and objective morality. Then we get into several different issues, like our conflicting moral intuitions, moral foundations, and the limitations of our evolved morality. We also talk about moral nihilism, and moral relativism. We discuss the differences between knowledge produced by science and moral truths (and value judgments). In the latter part of the conversation, we discuss to what extent moral axioms also apply to people's decisions about their own wellbeing; the fact that we don't have direct access to other people's minds and its moral implications, when it comes to paternalism; and also to what extent we should care about how we treat other animals and, in the future, advanced AI systems. -- Follow Aaron's work: Philosophers in Space (Spotify): https://spoti.fi/2N8zmDA Embrace the Void: http://bit.ly/35YAdQ4 Philosophers in Space (facebook group): http://bit.ly/32DBie1 Philosophers in Space (Twitter handle): @0gPhilosophy Embrace the Void (Twitter handle): @ETVPod -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, VEGA GIDEY, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, DAVID DIAS, ANJAN KATTA, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, AND JOHN CONNORS! Welcome to this episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This episode was cursed because the first time there was an internet outage; the second time there was a scheduling conflict:and the third time Hangouts wouldn't work. I finally had to record as a podcast, but even that required a lot of time and energy to sync. But the gospel of Aaron Rabinowitz and the Void shall not be silenced! Of course, Aaron co-hosts both Embrace the Void and Philosophers in Space, and he is also a professor, so he was the perfect person to talk to about Ethics and its real world implications, as well as why I should give a fuck. He did a good job learning me on the subject, and I am now motivated to do a little more reading. I hope y'all learn something to! Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

My guest for today is Aaron Rabinowitz, co-host of the new podcast Embrace the Void. Here’s what the official description of the show says: “Welcome friends, to a podcast for a darker timeline. Maybe the darkest of all timelines. Definitely not one of the good timelines. Maybe it’s always been a dark timeline, maybe the Hadron collider screwed us over. Science may never know. What we do know is that we live in the void. The void, a place where a chittering mass of void crabs can infest a person suit and win the presidency. The void, a place where we're just clever enough to know that climate change is happening, but not quite clever enough to do anything about it. The void seems terrible and cruel, but it loves you, in its own ironic way.” So today we’re going to talk about philosophy, religion, and what it means to embrace the Void.Links:•Embrace the Void: https://voidpod.com •ETV on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EmbraceTheVoidPod/ •ETV on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ETVPod •Ashton P.
