Starting pitchers are always a priority for teams looking to contend for a title, and this offseason has proven that statement continues to ring true. The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs both struck deals with starting pitchers, as they hope it leads to a stronger rotation than what they had in 2024.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss Frankie Montas signing with the Mets and why this is only the first part of the Amazins' rotation overhaul, as well as Matthew Boyd joining the Cubs and whether this could be the only starting pitcher they bring in this offseason. The guys also react to the Los Angeles Dodgers extending Tommy Edman and Juan Soto's troll job announcing his new sponsor. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys are joined by Pod on Lansdowne co-host Liam Fennessy as they discuss all the recent Juan Soto-Boston Red Sox rumors, as well as the reaction from the Fenway faithful regarding the possibility of the megastar joining the Sox. Come on through to see what I've got cookin' as I have plenty of opinions and analysis on everything happening in the world of sports as Episode 168 is ready to be served. On deck: (3:11) The NFL playoff chase is starting to come into place as many teams have moved up (or down) the ladder when it comes to seeding in the AFC & NFC. I'll discuss the winners and losers of Week 14, including the Steelers underwhelming performance in Buffalo. The Washington Football Team controlling their destiny. Green Bay and Kansas City sitting pretty at the top of their respective conferences. Will the Jets go 0-16? And a look ahead to Week 15. (33:26) LSU highlights this past weekend in college football. One good (upsetting Florida). One bad (a self imposed ban for playing in a bowl game this year. REALLY?) With conference championship weekend upcoming, how will it play out when it comes to who'll represent the awesome foursome for the college football playoff? (41:20) The NBA preseason has begun. I'll juggle storylines from four players that made news this past week. Kyrie Irving (avoiding the media), Kevin Durant (plays in a game for the first time in 18 months), James Harden (wants out of Houston) and Paul George (signs for the max with the Clippers) as we're eight days away from real games being played. (49:40) On the college basketball front, Coach K wants the powers that be to reassess the landscape of the sport in light of cancellations and postponements throughout the early part of this season. Is he right? (53:31) The MLB Hot Stove hasn't heated up, although the Mets have made some news with the signing of a catcher and a new GM. Did they make the right move for James McCann instead of J.T. Realmuto? Also, who I'd like to see the Amazins' pursue as we wait for free agency to heat up. And the Indians are going to have a makeover? Why this is good for the Cleveland baseball team (not so much for the fans of that region) NOTE: It's been reported that the Indians will carry the nickname for the 2021 season as they look to rebrand beyond next year. The guys contemplate grabbing a flight back from Cuncelina after a big win for the Amazins and taking a look at the offensive numbers. Hard to believe that a top-3 team in offense has only 20 wins, but when the look at the pitching it's clear to see why. deGrom and Lugo are as solid as you can ask for, but when the rest of your rotation has a 6 ERA and the bullpen is a crapshoot night after night can you really think a postseason push is possible? WE DON'T CARE ABOUT EDWIN DIAZ'S NUMBERS. You can scream his stats at us until you are blue in the face, we will not trust him until he proves to be a reliable option late in tight games. We break down the recent Uncle Stevie negotiations, look ahead at the gauntlet schedule that remains and highlight our new "quickies" segment to get Mets Fans Anonymous the rest of the way through. We are down to the final 16 and are in dire need of a run if we even want a glimmer of hope, but we gotta believe that we'll go on a miraculous run and have egg on our face or crash and burn the likes of which we've become accustomed to under the Wilpons' reign of terror. Autumn has arrived! With that, a new episode (#92) that's chock full of sports talk. On deck: We're down to the final week of the baseball season. Also, has Mickey Callaway saved his job for 2020? What about expectations for next year regarding the Amazins? Then there are the Yankees, as they have clinched their first division in seven years. Upon their celebration, word came down that a key contributor will not be on the team come October. I'll discuss what affect that may have on the team and the roster as they complete the final week of the regular season. I'll add in a CC Sabathia for the Hall of Fame debate in there as well. NFL Week 3 was so-so, but there are a couple of storylines to sink your teeth into. The Daniel Jones era is off to a resounding start with the Giants. How I compare this first game to, dare I say, Michael Jordan's NCAA Championship win at North Carolina. I'll explore the career of Eli Manning and whether or not he's destined for Canton, OH at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I'll discuss the big trade in Pittsburgh as Minkah Fitzpatrick comes north as a #1 pick for next year goes south to Miami. The 3-0 teams vs. the 0-3 teams. As well as, are NFL players adopting the 'NBA player empowerment' mentality as a way to get their demands met? The best sports month of the year never disappoints as I'll zip through the sports landscape in fast and furious fashion on this edition of The JAYREELZ Podcast. The Brooklyn Nets have hung tough but have fallen short against the heavily favored Philadelphia 76ers. I'll revisit their last three games, do they have a shot at bringing this series back to Brooklyn? And I must get into the antics of a one, Joel Embiid, whose postgame comments and in game behavior is starting to wear on me. This is one segment you won't want to miss out on as I believe this will catch up to him in the long run. I'll take a look back on how the Celtics had a rough go of it for a four game sweep vs. the Indiana Pacers and breeze through the rest of the NBA playoff brackets as there's very little drama surrounding the first round of the tournament. The Islanders have secured their first four game sweep of a playoff series since they've won the Stanley Cup back in 1983. Up next, is either Washington or Carolina as they Capitals are currently up 3-2 in their series. Will the long layoff help or hurt the Islanders in the second round? I'll have that, plus a more drama filled postseason on the ice than the hardwood as we have two, and a potential three, Game 7's on the horizon. The NFL Draft is days away. Both the Jets and Giants have prominent roles as they respectively have the 3rd and 6th picks overall. What will they do? What should they do? I'll deliver my take on who they should draft as we inch closer to the first round on Thursday. I'll also share a bit on the upcoming NFL schedules of the locals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns and their FOUR primetime games and much more. The Yankees have suffered another key injury, this time to their best player, Aaron Judge, but the beat goes on as they win five of their last six at home as they embark on a West Coast trip. Will they continue to tread water? Fall deeper in the AL East standings? As for the Mets, they limp home losing four of five and six of ten on their ten game road trip. What are biggest problem for the Amazins' early season failures? You'll be surprised at who are some of the culprits as to the Mets stumbling over the past week. Are there reinforcements coming? You'll definitely want to listen to what I have to say regarding these issues, and a whole lot more on this weeks episode of The JAYREELZ Podcast. (Episode 66) Music by Bensound.

I'll detail Tiger's historic Sunday, what this means moving forward and is there another major title on the horizon in 2019? The New York Islanders are one win away from sweeping the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the playoffs. I'll recap how effective and dominant they've been against their division rivals and can they break out the brooms? Or will it go back to the Island for a Game 5? Speaking of sweeps, who would've thought the Tampa Bay Lightning would be one game away from being sent home after their 62 win/128 point regular season? I'll discuss that and the rest of what's going on in the NHL as we get deeper into round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. How about the Brooklyn Nets? They went into Philadelphia and stole Game 1, with Game 2 looming this evening. Do they have a shot to win this series? Or was that just a fluke? You'll get my take on their chances, the Orlando Magic making a statement in Game 1 vs. Toronto, the Celtics ugly but effective win and the rest of the opening playoff weekend in the NBA. Is it time to panic in the Bronx if you're the Yankees? They're sure underachieving, but the injuries continue to mount, especially with their top players. I'll review the week that was and what lies ahead for the Bombers as the defending champion Red Sox come to town this week. Also, the Mets started off with a bang in Atlanta only to cool off by losing the back two games of their four game series to the Braves. Now it's onto Philadelphia as they'll face Bryce Harper & company for the first time this year. I'll check in on the good (Pete Alonso), the bad (Jacob deGrom's last two starts) and the ugly (the bullpen, minus Edwin Diaz) on the Amazins' as their ten game road trip continues. Join me and my guest Paul Spataro as we look back on the 1986 season, NLCS, and World Series and share our memories of what it was like to be a kid (in my case) and be at some of the greatest games in Mets history (like Paul). PLUS ... stay through to the end of the show for an exciting announcement about a BRAND NEW PODCAST!!! Show notes and pictures are available at Pop Culture Affidavit, which is also where you can see regular weekly blog entries about the randomness that is pop culture
