For the final episode of Trials Talk with Chris and Kyle, we dissect the wildest hour of track and field on U.S. soil in a while. In the men's 5,000m, Paul Chelimo toyed with the field and won a scorcher of a race in 13:26 ahead of Woody Kincaid and Grant FIsher. We had a bit of a weather delay where the meet was postponed due to extreme and record-setting heat. We had a world record in the women's 400m hurdles where Sydney McLaughlin took .26 seconds off Dalilah Muhammad's previous mark. Athing Mu did her thing with the second-fastest U.S. women's 800m mark of all-time to win the women's 800m over a loaded field. Ajee Wilson and Raevyn Rogers snuck in behind her for the other two spots to Tokyo. As if anything could follow those up, we saw one of the best 1,500 meter duels in recent history with Cole Hocker defeating the reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz. Noah Lyles closed out the show with a world-leading time in the men's 200m of 19.74. TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TRIALS TALK WITH CHRIS AND KYLE. We made our talk with Madeline Manning Mims at the end of this week's regular podcast its own podcast. Manning Mims was not only the 1968 Olympic 800m Champ and first US women to ever go sub 2:00, but she ran 1:57.9, held the US record for 15 years, and won the Olympic Trials 800m in 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980. She started competing when women did not compete in any Olympic events over 1,500m and the stereotype was black women could not run long distances. She proved everyone wrong. She is a bridge from Jesse Owens to Wilma Rudolph to Ajee' Wilson. She ran her first 800 by accident when they switched an indoor 400 to an 800 and the rest is history. You can follow her on facebook here (and see her giving an Easter concert from her garage for her neighbors during the COVID-19 shutdown). A nice bio on her is here. Show notes below sponsor notes. They also talk about her indoor season capped with a win at the Millrose games, funny nicknames, and why Adidas hasn't come through on a shoe deal (Just kidding, kinda). This episode also gets interesting as Ajee gives us her take on the IAAF ruling on South Africa's Caster Semenya eligibility to defend her World and Olympic titles. In this episode, I start with a quick recap on the Millrose Games, discussing the 800m and 1 mile races. Congrats to Ajee Wilson and Donovan Brazier on new US records in the 800m. Also, congrats to my episode 109 guests, Colleen Quigley and Kate Grace on going 2nd and 3rd in the women's mile, with Colleen earning a new PR.  Then at 14:30 into the discussion, I start an interview with Kara Goucher and Jean Rigatti. Kara needs no introduction, and Jean is one of my athletes here at Rogue (who was also on episode #38).  Jean is overcoming "failure" at her most recent race at the California International Marathon and represents that runner in all of us with failures and mental challenges to overcome. Kara shares her own wisdom and experiences (including her DNF in Houston) to coach Jean through it while also imparting advice on a variety of mental training topics. It's a powerful discussion with lots of practical advice from Kara's book Strong: A Runner's Guide to Boosting Confidence and Becoming the Best Version of You.
