The Losers head to the Aladdin Theater to celebrate 30 years of Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption. Losers include Justin Gerber, Michael Roffman, and Jenn Adams. Together, they discuss why it's such a ubiquitous favorite, where it ranks in the pantheon of prison movies, which of them would survive it all, and, naturally, how the film connects to 90210. There are various signposts by which we mark the beginning of the holiday season. My favorite is John Waters' return to Portland for his annual “A John Waters Christmas” show at the Aladdin Theater. It always sells out, and has again this year. Nevertheless, it's a chance to talk with John about the show and all of the exciting things he's been up to over the past year. We know each other from my Baltimore days. I was born there and spent far too many decades there before I escaped to Portland. Mine was his final interview of the day about the show. Lucky us. Welcome back John Waters.

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's we have a returning guest: Shawn Fausett of Colorado. Shawn previously appeared on Attendance Bias to tell his story from Phish's show from December 6, 1996 at the Aladdin Theater in Las Vegas. He is originally from the southwest, so While discussing that legendary Las Vegas show, it casually came up that he also attended the show we are discussing today: November 2, 1998 at the E Center in Salt Lake City Utah. I almost stopped that recording immediately and wanted to pivot to talk about that show, the colloquial “Dark Side of the Moon” show. But in an instant, I thought better of it and Shawn agreed, on the spot, to come back for a 2nd episode to talk about that Dark Side show. What you're about to hear is the result of that promise. While November 2, 1998 is the focus of today's conversation, and we do our best to keep it there, there are many references to the 1996 Vegas show, the 1998 Halloween show, and even a jump or two to the Baker's Dozen. So if you're a casual Phish fan, you may need to do a little bit of homework to gain an understanding of the context of today's legendary show. But before that, let's talk about Halloween cover albums, the reputation of the Dead Goat Saloon, the loudest crowd reactions ever as Shawn Fausett tells about November 2, 1998 at The E Center in Salt Lake City.

Welcome back to 321 Lift Off. Join us as we speak with Dr. Anastacia Hawkins-Smith, Chief Executive Officer & Artistic Director of the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse. Established as the Aladdin Theater, the doors opened to the public on August 18, 1924, showing silent movies. Later, Brevard's first “talkie” movie house became known as “the showplace of the Indian River Section.” Several owners and several decades later, the auditorium was acquired by the City of Cocoa, changing the name to The Cocoa Village Playhouse. The Brevard County Community College District Board of Trustees purchased the playhouse in 1984 for $1 from the city. In 1991, the auditorium was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in Tallahassee. In the Spring of 2011, Brevard Community College returned ownership of the Cocoa Village Playhouse to the City of Cocoa, who started a million-dollar renovation on the building in 2012. Today, the City of Cocoa still owns the playhouse, and it is considered one of the most beautiful theatres in Florida. We will be on stage at the Cocoa Village Playhouse, discussing the rich history of the auditorium, the Stars of Tomorrow youth program, and the various shows, past and present, put on at the playhouse.
Today: Comedian Matt Braunger joined us in studio, and it's the first comedian we've had in in human form for the first time in forever and it was awesome, high school reunions and new babies, and more - he is performing tonight at The Aladdin Theater at 8pm - get your tickets here, and have a great weekend!
Let's kill two birds with one stone here as May's Vault series continues and we start to get prepping for the upcoming Vegas show! We're going back to 1993 on the Vs. tour to talk about one of the most recognizable shows that year from the Aladdin Theater on 11/30. This show is know for being the reunion for Stone and Jeff's former pioneering Seattle grunge band, Green River. Along with former Green River members Mark Arm and Steve Turner from Mudhoney, the reunion is much more than getting a band back together and moreso a group of friends being reunited after six years. We'll also get a crooning Eddie with a very special Vegas-related guest. We'll hear some stories from two different parties in this show. First, Patrick and Brian from Hallucinogenic Recipe stop by to go over the history of why this was such a highly circulated boot before becoming a Vault show. Then we'll play a byte from Given To Live's Tom Pugh who sat with young Reece Jones to chat about his experience at the Oakland show, a story you do not want to miss! That and plenty of Vs. tracks including a phenomenal version of Go, and most importantly, the live debut of Tremor Christ. Cult filmmaker, writer, actor, and fine artist John Waters follows up his interview earlier this year by NPR's Terry Gross with a candid chat with Artslandia's Susannah Mars. See A John Waters Christmas – Filthier & Merrier “It’ll Stuff Your Turkey” December 6 at Aladdin Theater!
I guess we’re in the holidays by now. That’s what advertising tells us, anyway. Another holiday benchmark is the annual visit to Portland by John Waters. This year his one-man show is called “John Waters: Filthier and Merrier.” They also add, “It’ll stuff your turkey.” He’ll be at the Aladdin Theater on Friday, December 6 where, we are told he will answer the following questions, “Are stolen Christmas presents more special than bought ones?”, “Is Mrs. Clause a ‘feeder’ or a ‘chubby chaser’?”, “Is Santa a ‘gainer’, an erotic ‘bear’ or a ‘silver fox’?”, “Can you have Christmas sex inside a chimney?”, and “Are the reindeers paid minimum wage?” Once again, I talked with John about this year’s show. John and I are contemporaries, around the same age and both born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. I am proud to say (and have bragged and name-dropped about for years) that I wrote the first review of “Pink Flamingos,” and was blessed by being asked to be in the legendary, “Who wants to die for art?” scene in “Female Trouble.” I was there when Divine bounced on that trampoline, waving a gun. Divine did not shoot me, I’m sorry to say. John is still one of the funniest people on earth. When I talked with him a couple of weeks ago, over a very rough phone line, he was at the end of a full day of fifteen-minute interviews. When I talk with John for one of these things, we tend to stray off topic and talk about Baltimore things. So shoot me. I apologize for not having perfect audio, but we couldn’t skype it. I’ll jump right in.
On this week's episode, the gang is live from majestic Portland, Oregon discussing the 1990 family comedy/hardened police drama, Kindergarten Cop! Recorded on the recent west coast tour at the beautiful Aladdin Theater, the gang wants to know just why this movie starts like a scene from To Live and Die in L.A., what was with that vomit montage, and did the film really need that domestic violence sub-sub-subplot? PLUS: Jesse "The Body" Ventura auditions for some non-existent voice over roles in the film!Kindergarten Cop stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed, Linda Hunt, Richard Tyson, Carroll Baker, Cathy Moriarty, Richard Portnow, and a bunch of rotten children; directed by Ivan Reitman.

Welcome to the PDX Spotlight Podcast Presents Moorea Masa and the Mood featuring Allen Stone! We joined them live from the Aladdin Theater in Portland, Oregon.
As the name suggests, Swatkins and the Positive Agenda is feel good music. Steve Swatkins is a master synth/keyboardist but really makes his mark with his unique take on the talk box. Steve also performs with Allen Stone and has played all over this world but he seems to be finding his own niche in the Portland music scene. Along with special guest Moorea Masa, Swatkins and crew put on an electric show at the Aladdin Theater back in August 2018. There's new theme music for OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations. It’s Ghost Jazz by Auditory Sculpture and Derek Sims. Thanks for letting us use it. We’re not in the coffeeshop today. We’re in the studio of Soul singer/composer Ural Thomas, a fixture in the Portland music community for a very long time. A few years ago he started collaborating with drummer/composer Scotty Magee, who is also known as DJ Cooky Parker and the result is several years of fabulous concerts and now a new album called The Right Time. The release show is Saturday, September 29 at the Aladdin Theater. The story goes that he dropped out of the national music scene in the 60s to return to Portland. We’ll find out the real story, and you’ll discover his inspirational place in Portland music culture. Turns out, this is the right time for the rest of the world to re-discover Ural Thomas.

Hello sweltering Summer fans, it’s nice and cool in the cupping room here at World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th & Glisan. I’m Tom D’Antoni, your genial host. You know, music today is so diverse, it’s hard to tell which kind is more popular than another. Used to be Rock, used to be Indie, but today due to the Soul Music revival of the past few years, you can find just as much funky music and you can any other kind. One of the leaders in that category is here with me. It’s keyboardist, singer, composer Steveland Swatkins. I have just learned that I should call him Steve, and I will. He’s very busy with his own band, Swatkins and the Positive Agenda, with lots of gigs with others local and national…he just got back from playing with the great George Porter Jr. His partner is Moorea Masa and they share in each others’ careers. Both of their bands will be appearing at the Aladdin Theater on Saturday, August 25. He’s busy, he’s also genial. Here he is.
A New Collaboration for The Decemberists: Offa RexThe Decemberists may have finally met their match. The band has been collaborating with British singer Olivia Chaney to reinterpret tradition Scottish, Irish and English songs under the name Offa Rex — a reference to an Anglo-Saxon king. The resulting album, “The Queen of Hearts," comes out July 14 and is produced by local whiz Tucker Martine, and you can see Off Rex perform live July 23 at the Aladdin Theater.Kinetic Sculpture Racers Pedal On at Revamped DaVinci Days in Corvallis - 11:37This weekend, Corvallis celebrates the return Da Vinci Days: the festival where art and science mix. It started 29 years ago in the spirit of Leonardo DaVinci — a man as much about math as Mona Lisa. Da Vinci Days includes a full-three day schedule this year filled with live music, lectures, poetry readings, and a competition that may best embody the ingenuity and play at the festival’s heart: the Grand Kinetic Challenge, a race over land and water in handmade vehicles. Gallery 114’s Exhibition, “Human Being,” Centers Work by Incarcerated Artists - 22:04“Human Being,” the art show on view at Gallery 114 in NW Portland, features paintings and drawings and mixed media works by men who are serving life sentences in prison. David Slader, a former attorney who has devoted his retirement years to painting, invited three guest artists, Jerome Sloan, David Drenth, and B. Pat, to show artwork created in their Oregon prison cells alongside his own work.Boone Howard, PNW Rocker and Sound Engineer, Releases Solo Debut - 27:44An accomplished musician and former front man of Portland rock band The We Shared Milk, Boone Howard is also a sought-after live sound engineer. Now’s your chance to check out both his music and sound engineering chops on his solo debut record, “The Other Side of Town.” You can find videos of Howard's opbmusic performance here.Bend Arts Center Opens in a Changing Central Oregon Arts Landscape - 33:20Atelier 6000, a studio dedicated to printmaking and book arts, re-opened this month with a new name signifying a much broader mission: the Bend Art Center. The Center will offer expanded class offerings and a broader range of art exhibitions, but the name change is also a signpost for the restless conversation in Central Oregon art circles about who speaks for art, and what needs to be said. We check in with the folks at the new Bend Arts Center, plus local artists and art advocacy leaders, about possibilities and limitations for art in the region. U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith - 40:01In June, Tracy K. Smith was named 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States. This is just the latest add to an impressive string of titles: in 2012, Smith won a Pulitzer for her poetry collection Life on Mars, she runs the creative writing program at Princeton University, and, this year, published a new memoir. Arts Funding at the Capitol - 45:23 The legislative session just wrapped up, and we kept up on bills and funding packages so you don’t have to. One success for arts advocates: six million dollars in lottery bond money for Main Street Preservation grants. We check in with folks at the Liberty Theater in LaGrande, which will benefit from the bill. Plus, more on legislation that mandates a consideration of regional differences when state arts grants are awarded, and a look at the Oregon Arts Commission, which is facing a 16 percent budget cut.

We’re laughing on the outside and crying on the inside this week. The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Brings Copyright Law Into the 21st Century - 00:59The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation announced this week it will no longer charge copyright fees except for commercial uses (did you know artists can sue you for posting a photo of their work online?). Producer Aaron Scott explains why this is a big deal and speaks with Rauschenberg's son, who just so happens to be Portlander Christopher Rauschenberg, a photographer and co-founder of Blue Sky Gallery.Bullseye Glass Update - 5:05The air emissions story that began at two Portland art-glass makers has boiled over into state government and soon into the court room. Oregon’s top environmental administrator and an air quality regulator stepped down this week. Earthfix's Tony Schick stopped by to give us an update. The Electric Poetry of Robin Coste Lewis - 11:05Robin Coste Lewis won the National Book Award last year for her debut poetry collection, Voyage of the Sable Venus. The structure of the book's titular poem was guided by one simple rule: it is made up entirely of the titles, catalog entries and exhibit descriptions of artistic depictions of black female figures. Coste Lewis spoke with Think Out Loud's Dave Miller and read several poems. M. Ward Sings to His Baby (and opbmusic) - 22:44The latest release from M. Ward, More Rain, might sound like a Portland soundtrack, but it belies its name with sunny sounds of doo-wop and golden era AM radio sensibilities. The artist came by the OPB studios to play a few songs with a power backing band (REM's Scott McCoy, Mike Coykendall, and Alialujah Choir's Adam Selzer and Alia Farah), who he insists he did not find on Craigslist. The Book of Unknown Americans at Milagro Theater - 29:55The Multnomah County Library's Everybody Reads this year focuses on Cristina Henríquez's lauded novel, The Book of Unknown Americans. Henríquez will be in town on Tuesday (we'll have excerpts for you next week), but in preparation, Milagro Theatre brought in a group of actors to read her work. We share one of our favorites.Sandra Cisneros at Wordstock - 34:48One of Henríquez's influences was Sandra Cisneros' 1984 novel, The House on Mango Street. The story revolves around a girl trying to escape her poor Chicago neighborhood and is one of the few novels from a Latina perspective to be embraced by the literary establishment. We interviewed Cisneros at Wordstock last November shortly after the release of her latest work, A House of My Own: Stories From My Life.Farewell, Sweet Comedy: Amy Miller and Sean Jordan - 41:15Stand-up veterans Sean Jordan and Amy Miller are leaving for Los Angeles this month but not before one final farewell at Aladdin Theater on Mar. 13. The comedians talk with April Baer about what they love about Portland and why they have to leave.Visit our website for videos and full interviews: http://www.opb.org/radio/article/m-ward-robin-coste-lewis-robert-rauschenberg-sandra-cisneros-amy-miller-sean-jordan
This week we tackle the big subjects: the future of the Portland Building, the humor (or lack thereof) of rape jokes, the history of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival & more. Join us!The Future Of Portland's Most Loved/Hated BuildingThis week the Portland City Council will consider legislation to start renovating one of the city’s most recognizable works of architecture: The Portland Building. It's both Portland's most famous building (it's the text book case for postmodern architect) and perhaps its most reviled. First up, we take a look at what's wrong with the building. Hint: the problems run deeper than a color scheme that feels drawn from your grandma's kitchen. Then we listen to an excerpt of the building's architect, Michael Graves, before hearing the case for remodeling the building smartly from Randy Gragg, the director of the University of Oregon's John Yeon Center for Architecture and the Landscape.Adrienne Truscott's "Asking For It"There’s been a lot of talk in the comedy world over the last several years about rape jokes: are they funny, or seriously unfunny? Now there’s a show that tackles the issue head-on. The politically-minded theater presenters Boom Arts are bringing performer Adrienne Truscott to town for a show the New York Times called “as upsetting as it is hilarious." Truscott sports a blonde wig, jean jacket, and little else. Literally, she’s naked from the waist down. The show’s called “Adrienne Truscott’s Asking For It" (actually, the name’s quite a bit longer, but we’ll let Truscott explain it to producer Aaron Scott), and it runs through Oct. 24 at the Headwaters Theater.opbmusic Session: Alela Diane and Ryan FrancesconiMusicians Alela Diane and Ryan Francesconi didn’t set out to make an album, but they did. It’s called “Cold Moon,” and it came out Oct. 23. You can see videos of their opbmusic Session here, or catch them live at Revolution Hall on Oct. 17.Oregon Experience: The Oregon Shakespeare FestivalOregon Experience opens its season on Monday with a special about one of the brightest jewels in Oregon’s arts crown: the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Sure, you might know that it's the biggest regional theater in the country with the biggest resident acting company. Sure, you know that it attracts folks from around the world. But did you know it has a mammoth costume warehouse for rentals to everyone from Justin Timberlake on "Saturday Night Live" to Al Pacino in "Richard III."Disjecta Brings On The NoiseChiara Giovando, the new curator-in-residence at the north Portland contemporary art center Disjecta, gives us a tour of her first show, "The Book Of Scores." It's all about sound art. Oregon Art Beat: Artist Greg RobinsonThis weekend the Portland Art Museum opens a brand new Center for Contemporary Native Arts with an exhibition featuring the work of three Oregon Native artists. One of those artists is Greg Robinson, who taught himself to produce pieces in the traditional style of his tribe, the Chinook. If you have a picture in your mind right now of what his pieces look like, think again. Chinook art isn’t anything like the popular stereotypes of Pacific Northwest native art. The music for today came from the local band Black Prairie’s album “Wild Ones,” who did the album in tandem with a book by Jon Mooallem about the strange and wonderful relationship between humans and animals. Mooallem will be one of several public radio personalities sharing stories at the singular Pop-up Magazine on Oct. 20 at the Aladdin Theater. It’s a touring show that’s like watching a magazine get performed live, with journalists and writers doing everything from reading short humorous essays to telling feature length stories with documentary footage and photographs.
GUESTS: John (Mr. Lahey) Dunsworth, Cristela Alonzo, Not A Man, Shocking Admission About Cars, CRISTELA ALONZO, Aladdin Theater, Clippers, Epic Car Speech, WoC, Jem, Craft, Mac Cheese, Gay Sailors, JOHN DUNSWORTH, MR. LAHEY FROM TRAILER PARK BOYS, Hawthorne Theater, Greg Freaks Out Fanboy Style
0:00: Intro1:20: John Waters talks about his schlocky — and acclaimed — career and tells us what to expect from A John Waters Christmas, which he's bringing to Portland's Aladdin Theater on Dec. 8.34:10: Abraham Verghese recalls the experience that made him want to be a writer.44:10: We hear about Reed College's efforts to preserve the art of calligraphy, even amongst post-Millennial elementary schoolers.
