I’m sitting at a table with two people: Patrick and Conway. In front of me, there’s a knife. I could use the knife to cut the food on my plate. Or I could lunge across the table and stab Conway with it. If I did that, what would you say Patrick is supposed to do? He could do nothing. He could call 911 – to get an ambulance for Conway and a cop to arrest me. Or he could intervene – try and subdue me before I hurt Conway or other people. That is, in fact, more or less what Patrick Young actually does. Every day. For 3 years Patrick was the Director of Gun Violence Prevention for the City of New Orleans. In 2024 he founded 4 Social Peace. It’s the first organization in the country dedicated solely to digital community violence intervention. 4 Social Peace focuses on the links between threats and aggression on social media, real world crime, and the struggles of people trying to re-integrate after being released from incarceration. It's rooted in Patrick’s lived experience. Well, the good news is, I didn’t stab Conway Solomon, so I can tell you - he’s Co-Founder and CEO of a company called Wrstbnd. We first met Conway in 2020 when we were doing Out to Lunch on Zoom because of the pandemic and Conway had plenty of time on his hands because nobody was going to a live event where they’d be needing a hi-tech electronic wristband to get in the door. That was then. Today Wrstbnd is a real-world applied technology success story. It’s – as the name suggests - a wristband - that’s also an integrated event organization gadget and platform - kind of like a live event version of the Apple Watch or the Oura Ring. A person attending an event gets an electronic wristband that, first of all, allows people to flow into a big event in almost real time without stopping to have a ticket checked. The Wrstbnd knows whether people are VIPs or have special needs and tracks their whereabouts. It can be used for super-fast transactions – think, speeding up the lines for drinks, food or merch. Wrstbnd partners with international event promotion company AEG, one of the producers of New Orleans Jazz Fest. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. He is a celebrated author, entrepreneur, leadership maven, and a founding Board Member of Burning Man Project. He's a serial contributor to the culture and the cause. In this episode, Chip and Stuart explore how to use the 10 Principles to make conversations interesting and how a description of Black Rock City always becomes a riddle. They resist the urge to quiz newbies on the 10 Principles, while they also say that Burners should not take themselves too seriously. They try on the notion that nothing matters and everything's humorous. They make sense of big ideas like collective effervescence, emotional equations, and the need for aesthetics and beauty. They talk about a deep diversity of ritual gatherings around the world, and the influence of the global community emanating from Regional Burns. They talk about all this and more, and somehow it all make sense. wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_Conleychipconley.comwww.meawisdom.com LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG
Do YOU love NOLA? Jazz Fest? Are you thinking of going to either OR both in your future? Are you a live music lover? If you have the tiniest bit of interest in any, or ALL of the things I mentioned than I believe you'll hear something that resonates with AND inspires you in this episode :) I went to New Orleans, for Jazz Fest, for the first time 3 years ago. It was the first Jazz Fest after the pandemic shut the world down, and I could hardly wait! A friend was supposed to join me, but because certain places were still requiring a vaccine card they opted out. I entertained the idea of not going, for about 5 minutes, and then begain to solidify my plans! I have since fallen in love with the Crescent City!! I attended solo and have gone back every year since! The first year I attended the first weekend of Jazz Fest, last year I attended the 2nd weekend, and this year I stayed for the whole shabang :) I've released a few prior episodes: #'s 11, 12 & 46, in which I share about my experiences during each visit, and here I am again about to share all about my first 5 days of Jazz Fest 2024 AND MORE!!! My intention is to provide you, in a 3 part series, with tips on getting around, info on the place I stayed, and a peek into the many venues where I took in live music, along with my Jazz Fest specific experience ;) I saw SOOOOOOOO many concerts in my first 5 days! I almost couldn't believe that after those first 5 days I still had 8 more days of music, food and fun to enjoy!! I hope you can live a bit vicariously through me, via this episode, AND be inspired to either visit/revisit the Big Easy yourself, or get jazzed to get to another city you love ;) In the meantime: "Come with me to New Orleans. What a city you will see!" Ever been to Jazz Fest, or want to go? We've got all the insider tips you need to have a great time!
On January 30th I officially kicked off my 2024 musical adventure around the sun with a performance by the Benny Hill Jazz Quartet! It was a spectacular benefit event raising money for the Cape Fear Community College's music department and it was a few hours WELL spent!! Then on February 2nd I chose to once again celebrate what used to be my marriage anniversary by attending a concert, in order to make some new memories ;) This year I had the distinct pleasure of taking in a performance by Elvis Costello & The Imposters, with Charlie Sexton guesting in as well, and boy oh boy was my soul filled with MAGNIFICENT MUSICAL MELODIES!! In case you didn't know: I LOVE MUSIC!!! It truly does soothe this savage beast ;) Do you love music? Then join me as I share my experience regarding both mentioned performances, along with the musical agenda I have on the books so far, and hopefully it will inspire you to get busy making YOUR concert plans OR get you jazzed for your already booked upcoming events! Do you not love music? Well I invite you to take a listen just the same and perhaps my joy will fill you with joy ;) **DISCLAIMER: Please take note that any references to ketamine infusions or any other form of medicinal treatments, mainstream or non mainstream, are strictly meant to provide an insight into my own experiences. #948 - Ralph MacDonald - Second Interview The second Ralph MacDonald Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? We have nothing, but heartfelt admiration and respect for every listener to The Paul Leslie Hour. We're bringing to you an interview from our radio archives with the late, great Ralph MacDonald. This was recorded by phone in 2008. Ralph was born in Harlem, New York in 1944 and passed away in Stamford, Connecticut in 2011. In the interview, the Legendary Ralph MacDonald checked in from New Orleans Jazz Fest to discuss his album, "Mixty Motions.” That's m-i-x-t-y. A producer, songwriter, percussionist, performer and Grammy-award winner, Ralph MacDonald had roots in the Caribbean. With his songwriting team of William Salter and William Eaton, Ralph wrote “Where is the Love?,” “Just the Two of Us,” “Mister Magic” and more. His songs were covered by artists like Bill Withers, Grover Washington Jr, Roberta Flack, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett and others. The son of Calypsonian MacBeth the Great, Ralph MacDonald went onto be a member of Harry Belafonte's band when he was young. For over 20 years he was an important member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, as the percussionist. His last album “Mixty Motions” is a fusion of the many styles of music Ralph embraced from Jazz, African Rhythms, Calypso, Samba and others. This was Paul's second time speaking with Ralph MacDonald, and this interview is fascinating. MacDonald shared opinions, history, and his philosophy on music. Before we get started, we ask that you please consider subscribing to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel. It would greatly help us in our mission and you'll get free access to all our upcoming content. Before we begin, we ask that you make the most of every day. Starting with this one. Let's listen. Together. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.
Jay is at the beach and that means we get our annual check in with Michael Weddington! This year we have three topics to cover with Michael:-The Florida wood cockroach, or palmetto bug, is a large cockroach species found in the South and can grow between 30-40mm. Jay really dislikes them.-Louisiana blues artist Michael Juan Nunez blew Michael away at this year's New Orleans Jazz Fest. While the Louisiana Music Factory is currently out of stock (still the greatest record shop on the East Coast, in Michael's opinion), he found his music online and brings it to us today.-In most of Jay's memories, Michael is wearing a Grateful Dead tee shirt, so Jay was extremely excited to catch up with him at beach week this year and talk about his own new obsession. While he wore the tee shirts, and obtained them at Dead shows, Michael's love for the Dead stops there. He just liked the scene… but as far as the music, he's on the record as being “casually enthusiastic”.Songs:Michael Juan Nunez - “Lemonade” Michael Juan Nunez - “Rouxsta”Greg brings us a brand new Three For Thursday. Alex G is an eclectic indie artist that's been picking up steam this past year (thanks for the recommendation Zoya!). Aphex Twin has a new album coming out at the end of July and his single is worthy of a listen. Last up, Alan Holdsworth is one of Greg's favorites and bookends the segment quite nicely. Songs:Alex G - “Gretel” & “Runner”Aphex Twin - “Blackbox Life Recorder 21F/in a room F760”Alan Holdsworth - “Zarabeth”It was a busy week for Nick & a slow week for music news (plus Nick is still pumped about his new theme song), so this week we get “News With Nick: De-Tour” It's a new game with similar rules to most of the other games… Contestants are presented with a true story from the life of an artist on tour this week and they must choose the right artist from the options provided.Song: Raffy Bushman - “Silver Lines”

Lots of sights and sounds at New Orleans Jazz Fest. ----- My wife, a college friend and I stood amidst the peace and quiet of Jazz Fest in New Orleans last weekend along with what must have been 100,000 of our closest friends. It was a sight. When my wife and I told our friends we were going, they reacted the same was as when I told them we were going to Mexico for spring break – “Oh no,” they said. “That's dangerous over there. You're going to get shot.” During my thirty-six hours in New Orleans, I never once felt unsafe. To the great disappointment of my schadenfreude friends, we returned to Mobile unscathed. Which has led me to the conclusion that many of my friends are ninnies and are best left at home. I'm hoping heaven is a lot like the Gospel Stage at Jazz Fest. A cool breeze blew through the tented area. People were happy to slide a chair or two over to make room us. Most importantly, there were chairs. And, wow, the music. Argue if you want, but there's more energy coming from the Gospel Stage than any other Jazz Fest stage. When you're singing about the glory of the Lord, energy comes naturally. And when this middle aged, overweight, thinning haired white guy rose to his feet waiving his palms in the air to show that the spirit was moving…well, I couldn't believe myself. It was very out of character. But I felt it. And I loved it. One thing I don't love are large sweaty shirtless men. Or even small sweaty shirtless men. And there were a lot of them at Jazz Fest. They were everywhere. We left the Gospel Tent to wander the exhibits and try the food…and they were everywhere. One of the hardest movie scenes to watch ever is the scene from Along Came Polly when Ben Stiller's character plays basketball and, well, rubs up against a big sweaty guy. If you know what I'm talking about, you know. That was my fear. Shirts should be required when you're standing in crowded areas waiting for the acts to start. And when the music starts, the shirtless men more than others, become quite the charismatic dancers. I minded my own business, but I kept them in my periphery hoping I wouldn't have one of those Ben Stiller moments and have to wash my entire body in molten lava or, more likely, decide my life was simply no longer worth it. After watching Jon Cleary play some fantastic funk music, we turned to leave and hordes of people were filing in to see Kenny Loggins finish out the day on that same stage. You gotta respect Kenny Loggins but, for me, his music isn't good enough to risk proximity to gobs of sweaty, shirtless, charismatic dancing men. Not my scene. But in they marched, packing the area, eager for Kenny Loggins. They were excited to get Footloose as they headed into the shirtless Danger Zone. Don't Fight It. This is It. And as for me not seeing Kenny's show, I'm Alright. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep it Real.

This week on Dopey! We are joined by super friend of the show and legendary comedian and actor, Margaret Cho. Margaret comes out of the closet as a super Dopey fan and a recovering kratom addict! Plus why boofing THC oil was so tempting! This information really kicked the boofing and kratom spectacular into high gear - because while putting the show togeher we are joind by OG Dope - Whitey Tightey aka Jeremy Turner who had lots of experience with kratom AND with boofing! PLUS The Upful Life podcast creator, B. Getz turns up to come clean about his own Kratom use. All of that plusemails, voicemails and more -on a brand new episode of that good old Dopey show! More on Dopey... Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

It's not often an artist lands on the stages of music festivals like Governor's Ball and New Orleans Jazz Fest before they graduate high school. For multi-hyphenate artist DAMOYEE, they're just the beginning. Since early childhood, the Dallas, Texas native and award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and composer has been studying music theory and composition to establish her own musical thumbprint built on an intrapersonal understanding of her art. She quickly began nourishing her ability by learning several instruments, including piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, melodica and dulcimer, to name a few. Growing up, DAMOYEE found inspiration from the soulful musings of artists like Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys as she began charting her journey as a pianist and storyteller with ethereal and enchanting vocals — by the age of 10 she was performing her own original music. This led to her acceptance into Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, an alma mater shared by the likes of Norah Jones and Erykah Badu. Her latest album, 2019's The Whole Truth, charted internationally and garnered praise from publications like Dallas Observer and Central Track, which respectively dubbed her “Best Vocalist” and “Best Female Vocalist” in Dallas. Now, having spent the past few years bolstering her craft while a student at Berklee College of Music, DAMOYEE has found deeper meaning in the trials and tribulations of unrequited love, self-discovery and the reclamation (similar to proclamation)of her womanhood. Her new music explores these themes while fusing shades of pop, jazz, R&B and folk to create a unique sound that has reverberated throughout the viral ethers of multiple social platforms, including TikTok and Instagram, where she has amassed a collective audience in the hundreds of thousands of followers.

Today on the show I am speaking with Paul Peck. Paul got his start in the music industry as a student at Tulane University. After an inspiring trip to the New Orleans Jazz Fest, he joined the Superfly team that eventually was involved in organizing the first Bonnaroo festival in 2002. In this episode, we get some behind-the-scenes stories on how that came together, and how he put together "super jams" where artists who ordinarily wouldn't perform together join forces on stage.Paul recently started his own festival, Okeechobee, in Florida and is now serving as the president of the fundraising platform Fandiem. We don't have our normal song samples throughout this episode, but I found Paul's stories of creating and putting on these festivals amazing, and I hope you do as well! Live performance from New Orleans Jazz Fest 2019
With the help of festivals like the New Orleans Jazz Fest, Cajun music saw a revival in the 1960s and 70s. Many of the voices from this revival were captured in Les Blank's poetic J'ai Été Au Bal and Alan Lomax's more historical Cajun Country.

When musicians speak one-on-one to George Porter, Jr., they often share that he's a role model of theirs, he's their inspiration for playing the bass or the drums, or even for choosing to play funky music in the first place. George is polite. He smiles and says "thank you very much." But inside he's wondering what they're talking about and wishing they'd sit back down at their instrument and get to work. There's music left to be discovered and to play. His success, he says, comes from giving 100% each time he's performing. And having performed with Flea, John "Papa" Gros, Allen Toussaint, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, David Byrne, and Tori Amos to name a few, he's, perhaps surprisingly, a nice and humble guy. I catch up with him after a long night in his home studio preparing some recordings for a New Orleans Jazz Fest release.

At age 11, Darrian began studying music at the Academic and Performing Arts Center under Dr. Perry Combs and several other inspiring music educators, including Alvin Fielder, London Branch and Chad Anderson. These musicians played a huge role in his early development and would also serve as his mentors. In 2008, Darrian moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he took over the drum chair in Ellis Marsalis's quartet. He stated, "I love playing with Mr. Marsalis; he allowed me to grow and explore the music without consequence." Darrian continued to play with Ellis until his departure from New Orleans in December 2012. Darrian is a rising star, drummer, composer, and band leader of The Session, a group comprised of unique characters he shared the bandstand with while playing in Jason Marsalis' vibe quartet. Darrian has performed in over 30 festivals worldwide. He has also performed at renowned venues such as The Kennedy Center, Herbst Theatre, Saenger Theatre, Aladdin Theater, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Snug Harbor, Smoke Jazz Club, and Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse. Martin Sexton, an upstate New Yorker, left home with seventy-five bucks and a Stratocaster to chase his musical dreams singing in the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gradually and independently working his way to the premier venues of North America inspiring fans and musicians along the way. The activity and touring behind his records laid the foundation for the career he enjoys today, headlining everywhere from The Filmore to Carnegie Hall. Since launching his own label, Kitchen Table Records (KTR), the fiercely independent Sexton has infiltrated many musical worlds, performing at concerts, ranging from pop (collaborating with John Mayer) to the Jam scene to classic rock (collaborating with Peter Frampton); from the Newport Folk Fest to Bonnaroo to New Orleans Jazz Fest to now shows around the world. Regardless of his reputation as a musician's musician, Sexton can't keep Hollywood away. His songs can be heard in feature films and television including Showtime's 'Masters of Sex' and 'Brotherhood,' NBC's 'Scrubs' and 'Parenthood,' and the IFC film 'Lucky Them.'Sometimes, an artist is in charge, but Sexton's case, the songs on his 2015 album, 'Mixtape of the Open Road,' were clearly driving the bus. As much as he wanted to create a theme record (like bluegrass or '70s rock), the songs in his collection each represent its own place in space and time. The resulting collection gathers together favorites that make for a memorable listening experience. While out on his massive roadtrip in support of the album, Sexton stopped by Beehive Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, to lay down some live cuts from his mixtape " along with exclusive video performances.
