Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager.  He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s.  RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

Lady Bianca is an American electric blues singer, songwriter and arranger. Lady Bianca has worked as a session singer, depicted Billie Holiday on stage, and since 1995 released six solo albums, three of which were nominated for a Grammy Award. Born Bianca Thornton, in Kansas City, Missouri, her first exposure to music was through gospel, and she studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her first professional gig was with Quinn Harris and the Masterminds, when she was aged 17. Harris dubbed her 'Lady Bianca', and the combination contributed two tracks to a compilation album released by Reynolds Records in 1970. In 1972, she played the role of Billie Holiday in the San Francisco stage production of Jon Hendricks' Evolution of the Blues. In the mid 1970s, she worked in various clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she met bass guitarist Henry Oden. They were subsequently married for 15 years. She then joined Sly and the Family Stone as backing vocalist and keyboard player, and appeared on their 1976 album, Heard Ya Missed Me, Well I'm Back. Starting in October the same year, she toured for one month with Frank Zappa in North America, and a recording of her singing "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station" appeared in 1992 on You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 6. The complete concert of 29 October 1976 in The Spectrum, Philadelphia (with Lady Bianca singing on several tracks) was published on two CDs by the Zappa Family Trust in 2009, entitled Philly '76, on which she is credited as Bianca Odin. The release included the previously released version of "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," as well as "Dirty Love" and "You Didn't Try To Call Me." She is also heard employing the technique of multi-phonics with her voice on a wordless solo in "Black Napkins." After November 11, she left the band because of conflicts with Zappa. When not touring, she performed locally in the recording studio, backing musicians such as Lee Oskar, Merle Haggard and Taj Mahal. In 1977, she co-founded the short-lived ensemble Vitamin E, and they released the commercially doomed Sharing album on Buddah Records. Lady Bianca then joined another group, Zingara, which was set up by Lamont Dozier in 1980. The trio included James Ingram, Wali Ali and Lady Bianca, but again, it did not have any lasting appeal. Between 1981 and 1986, Lady Bianca toured with and recorded backing vocals for Van Morrison, appearing on recordings such as Beautiful Vision (1982), Inarticulate Speech of the Heart (1983), Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast (1984), A Sense of Wonder (1985), and No Guru, No Method, No Teacher (1986). Lady Bianca also worked with John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon. In 1984, she met Stanley Lippitt, a songwriter and her eventual husband. She continued to perform locally and undertook more low-key recording work. After recording demos with Lippitt, she was noticed by Joe Louis Walker who helped arrange a recording contract. Her debut solo album, Best Kept Secret was released in 1995 on Telarc Distribution. Her backing vocals work continued in the 1990s, when she worked with Frankie Lee and Maria Muldaur. Lady Bianca's next solo effort was the critically acclaimed Rollin' (2001), which was released on the Rooster Blues label. Bianca formed her own record label, Magic-O Records, and with Lippitt have their own production and publishing company. Further albums were recorded and issued on Magic-O. These included All by Myself (2004), Let Love Have Its Way (2005), Through a Woman's Eyes (2007), and A Woman Never Forgets (2009). In April 2007, at the Bay Area Black Music Awards, Lady Bianca was awarded as Best Blues Performer. In March 2008, she was voted into the West Coast Blues Society Hall of Fame. In 2009, she appeared with Van Morrison at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Lady Bianca and the Magic-O Rhythm Band have appeared at many blues music festivals, including the San Francisco Blues Festival in 1987,

The real story of Sly & the Family Stone needs to be told. Sly himself recently released a reportedly underwhelming memoir and there have been others over the years, but the true story of this revolutionary group is eroding too quickly. This week we welcome their legendary drummer (and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer) Greg Errico. Greg recounts just how special those early days were and how sad it was when it all ended. Greg has had tons of success elsewhere including with Santana, Weather Report, Billy Wyman, David Bowie, Lee Oskar and Betty Davis of all people! Defining a genre for the group War is a difficult process.  There are elements of Latin, R&B, funk, soul, and rock mixed in.  Some call it progressive soul.  War came from Long Beach, California in 1969, and began as a backing band for Deacon Jones.  The band was originally led by Eric Burden of the Animals and were known as Eric Burden and War for their first tow albums, then as War after Burden left the group.  Their seventh studio album, Why Can't We Be Friends? would continue a tradition of successful albums for the band, going to number 8 on the US charts, number 1 on the R&B sharts, and two singles would be nominated for the Grammy awards in 1976.War had a large number of musicians, and much of their personnel rotated in and out of the group.  For this album the group was Howard Scott on guitar, B.B. Dickerson on bass, Lonnie Jordan on organ, Papa Dee Allen on conga and bongos, Charles Miller on clarinet and sax, and Lee Oskar on harmonica.  All members are also listed on percussion and vocals.War was a band with a purpose.  The goal of the band from the beginning was to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony, and to speak out against racism, hunger, gangs, and crimes.Bruce brings us this funky fusion band for discussion.. Why Can't We Be Friends? The title track reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Each band member gets their own verse to sing.  The title is sung 44 times.  It was played in outer space during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.  Smash Mouth did a cover in 1998 as the second single from their debut album.  HeartbeatThis is a deeper cut with a lot of funk.  You could easily hear George Clinton and Parliament doing this piece.  The lyrics are about not worrying about things, but being in the present.  "Ain't no need a-worryin' about the future.  Ain't no need a-worryin'."Don't Let No One Get You DownLeading off the album, this song is a piece of encouragement, letting the listener know they will always be lifted up by the singer.  "Don't let no one get you down, cause if they do, if they do, I'll be around."Low RiderThe big hit off the album would become iconic over time.  The song is about a car and a culture in Southern California.  A low rider is a car modified with hydraulic lifts so the wheels can be lowered and make the car bounce.  The band maintains that the references are not to drug culture, although the song did make it into a couple of Cheech and Chong movies.. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme to the motion picture "Jaws"This movie was keeping everyone out of the water in the summer of 1975.   STAFF PICKS:Welcome to My Nightmare by Alice CooperWayne starts off the staff picks with the title song from a concept album that chronicles a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven.  Cooper would later perform this song on "The Muppet Show."  It peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)  by The Doobie BrothersRob brings us a cover from Motown.  Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote this one, originally performed by Kim Weston in 1964.  While the original version peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, the Doobie Brothers version was more successful, peaking at number 11.Sister Golden Hair by America Brian features a track that went to number 1 on the charts.  This is a relationship song according to Gerry Beckley, and it was made as a demo before America recorded their fourth album.  It didn't make the cut for that album, and so was included in their next album. Magic by PilotBruce's staff pick is the first hit single from short-lived Scottish pop rock band pilot.  The inspiration for this song is a sunrise on Blackford Hill in Edinburgh.  Lead singer David Paton also worked with the original lineup of The Alan Parson's Project, and worked with Kate Bush, Camel, and Rick Wakeman.  The band had a couple of other hits before splitting in 1977.   NOVELTY TRACK:You Never Even Called Me By My Name by David Allen CoeThe perfect country and western song was released in 1975, and reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

#leeoskar #summeroflove #sanfranciscomusic #lowridersong #blackpanthers Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1948, Oskar was six years old when a family friend gave him his first harmonica. "I came from an area where every kid on the block had a harmonica", he remembers. He grew up listening to Danish radio, enjoying all types of music and cites Ray Charles as the biggest influence from that period. At 17, Oskar decided that the United States was where a harmonica player should make his career. So he moved to New York at the age of 18 with little more than a harmonica in his pocket. With no money, Oskar played harmonica in the streets of New York. Eventually arriving in Los Angeles, via Toronto and San Francisco, Oskar soon met and joined forces with Eric Burdon who had recently disbanded The Animals and was searching for new collaborators. Together, the harmonica-playing Dane (born Lee Oskar Levitin ) and the British blues-rock singer made the rounds of the L.A. clubs, eventually hooking up with the soon-to-be members of War. Burdon agreed to the novel idea of pairing up Oskar's harmonica with Charles Miller's saxophone to form a horn section. This team-up set War apart from the start, giving Oskar room to display the full spectrum of his improvisational prowess. Oskar's harmonica magic was always a vital element in War's music and performances. Oskar continued with War for 24 years non-stop. At the end of 1992, during the time of dispute over the WAR trademark, Oskar took a few years to continue his solo career and to focus on his Lee Oskar Harmonica manufacturing. When China won its bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing promised to improve China's human rights record. By most accounts, that didn't happen. As Beijing prepares to host the Olympics again, tough questions about human rights in China remain. Also, Democratic socialist Xiomara Castro became Honduras' first female president today. She says she'll work to tackle corruption and bolster alliances with the US. Plus, Lee Oskar, co-founder of the 1970s funk and soul band War, has a new album called, “Never Forget,” with music that helped him process his family's multifaceted history going back to World War II and the Holocaust.

One of the most popular funk groups of the '70s, W** were also one of the most eclectic, freely melding soul, Latin, jazz, blues, reggae, and rock influences into an effortlessly funky whole. Although W** lyrics were sometimes political in nature (in keeping with their racially integrated lineup), their music almost always had a sunny, laid-back vibe emblematic of their Southern California roots. W** kept the groove loose, and they were given over to extended jamming;  The band transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. W*-was subject to many line-up changes over the course of its existence, leaving member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan as the only original member in the current line-up; four other members created a new group called the Lowrider Band.

This week's Deadpod features the second set of the band's 'From Egypt With Love' performances at Winterland on October 18, 1978. This is an interesting set, it starts out rather slow, with a less than inspired 'Bertha'>'Good Lovin'. If you're a fan, Donna Jean's 'From the Heart of Me' follows.. I rather enjoy it, but it may be an acquired taste. 'Ship of Fools' follows, then the pre-drums highlight 'Samson and Delilah'. 'Terrapin Station' follows, but Jerry blows the lyrics and does an extended solo. An excellent 'Playin' In the Band' leads into a Drums and Space marked by the guest appearance of Lee Oskar, which gives it an unusual flavor. The jam into the 'Wharf Rat' that follows is exceptional however, as is the Rat, one of the best of the period. A very unusual set-closing 'Truckin' follows, quite well played. They return for an equally unusual 'I Need a Miracle' encore, a song that really fit well in that spot...   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/18/78 - Wednesday   Two     Bertha [7:13] > Good Lovin' [6:05] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:48] ; Ship Of Fools [6:36] ; Samson And Delilah [8:19] ; Terrapin Station [12:06] > Playing In The Band [10:#49] > Drums (1) [9:30] > Space (1) [5:58] > Wharf Rat [11:#33] > Truckin' [11:21] Encore     I Need A Miracle [4:20#] Comments     (1) with Lee Oskar on harmonica, appears at 4:48 into drums.   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102519.mp3    Have a safe and happy Halloween!!   The Deadpod exists due to the kindness of those good folk who support it. Su mayor éxito mundial fue "Before The Rain". Toda la música del recuerdo en Quick Remember.

My guest for this episode of the podcast is Tony Di Silvestro of Sofar Sounds Kansas City. I don't typically seek out businesses or organizations to guest on the podcast, although some of my past guests are musicians who also happen to have a thriving business related to music and musicians (see Lee Oskar, David Barrett, and Carlos Castillo). In this case Tony reached out to me to express interest in sharing the Sofar Sounds Kansas City story with my listeners and readers. And after a phone conversation with him, I decided that Sofar Sounds is something that both music artists and fans should know about. As for Tony, he wanted to get involved in the music and arts scene in Kansas City and has found Sofar Sounds a nice way to do so. Sofar caters to indie artists, but doesn't shy away from noteworthys. For example, here are some names you might recognize–Yeah Yeah Yeahs front gal Karen O., Bastille, and Ed Sheeran. Impressive. I'd love to know what you think as a listener, a reader, a fan, and/or as a music artist. Have you looked into Sofar Sounds in your city? Have you already had experience with them? Are you intrigued? I ask these questions because if Sofar Sounds is as cool as it appears to be, I'd love to help raise awareness among music artists and fans everywhere. Why should artists & fans care? Tony says that the surprise element keep Sofar shows fresh and unique. Shows are announced the week of the performance, and to an invitation-only list. You can apply to attend a show near you on their website (here's how it works). Tony also feels fans should appreciate the fact that Sofar showcases new artists. I imagine music artists also appreciate this. Also... the shows are affordable. In many cases, Sofar asks for a mere $10 donation. The cost of shows, however, varies by city and the performing artist.     What about the music artists? Music artists love playing a captive room, and that's what Sofar Sounds gives them. Sofar also gives its performing artists a high quality professional video of their performance, something Tony says artists really appreciate. He emphasizes that being part of Sofar is a great networking opportunity for music artists because of its global social presence. It's a great way for artists to get involved in multiple cities. Payments to performing artists can be just the pro video of their performance and/or a monetary payment. This too varies by city, and sometimes by performing artist. The Sofar business model While Sofar Sounds Kansas City is focused on producing shows at unique venues, every city has it's own vibe. Tony cites the intimacy of shows as a primary pillar of the Sofar Sounds model. The biggest opportunity for Sofar Kansas City to profit is more frequent shows and more artists who want to perform; but Tony will tell you that they're not in it primarily for profit. He says they're in it for the atmosphere and buzz being created. Keeping shows secret and keeping a cool buzz seem to genuinely motivate Tony. He goes on to explain that Sofar cities always start as non-profits. At the time of this podcast episode, Kansas is in transition to a for-profit mode of business. Sofar shows request fan donations starting at $1, and while show prices can vary, a $10 donation is common. Whether for profit or not, I'm sure that sustainability is part of the long term goal. Sofar shows request fan donations starting at $1, and while show prices can vary, a $10 donation is common. Whether for profit or not, I'm sure that sustainability is part of the long term goal. I wish them tons of success. Born in Denmark, Lee Oskar found his way to New York at age 18 to pursue a career in music. He eventually found his way to LA where people quickly took notice of his unique skills as a harmonica player. This is about the time he met Eric Burdon who went on to be his bandmate in a little funk rock fusion ensemble called War. The ensuing string of hits include "Spill the Wine", "The World Is a Ghetto", "The Cisco Kid", "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider.” He also has an impressive body of solo recordings.Lee has always seen the harp as not just an instrument, but as his voice. In the late 70's Lee began working on what would become Lee Oskar Harmonicas, all out frustration with the subpar harps available to him at the time. What better reason to create a business that would become the leading designer and manufacturer world class harmonicas. Our conversation is wide ranging, traversing his early influences, his band War, gigs at Ronnie Scott's famed Jazz club, meeting and jamming with Jimi Hendrix, business, following one's heart, believing in one's self, persistence, hype, and much, much more.I recommend taking notes, because you're about to hear a voice of true wisdom and unique experience. As an award winning jazz vocalist and founding member of The Manhattan Transfer, Erin Dickins has enjoyed career singers dream about. After five years singing ensemble music with The Manhattan Transfer, she emerged as one of the top studio singers in New York. Dickins toured and recorded with many notable artists including Leonard Cohen, Bette Midler, James Taylor, The Talking Heads, James Brown, Jaco Pastorius and Ashford & Simpson, to name but a few.   Erin Dickins Dickins recently completed work on a new album, Vignettes, slated for release in 2017. This first self-produced project is a compilation of one-on-one collaborations with an array of world-class musicians; many who have been close friends for many years. Eclectic and personal, Vignettes is a true representation of Dickins creativity. It captures her love of many musical genres and shows the true range of her vocal artistry. Among her collaborators are David Friedman (vibes), Elliott Randall (Steely Dan guitar), John Lissauer (Leonard Cohen Producer), Rob Mounsey (piano), A.J. Croce (Jim’s son - piano) and many others. As passionate about cooking as she is about music, in November 2014 Erin Dickins released a new cookbook with an accompanying CD, Sizzle & Swing - Jazzin’ Up Food by ComteQ Publishing with Dot Time Records. In concert with the book/CD release, Dickins launched a new line of herbal seasonings that shares the moniker, Sizzle & Swing. Ms. Dickins was awarded the prestigious Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award and was also the recipient of the “Best Jazz Vocalist” honor awarded by CoffeeTalk Jazz Radio in Los Angeles. She is currently booking for 2017-18 internationally. * Erin Dickins: Vignettes review – 10 stunning duets Dave Gelly Sunday 9 April 2017 03.00 EDT Ten tracks, 10 duets, each with a different partner – not showbiz names, just startlingly good musicians. And Erin Dickins, New York session superwoman and founder member of the Manhattan Transfer, knows the difference. Some, such as drummer, vocalist, harmonica player Paul Jost are multi-instrumentalists; others, such as bassist Bruce Hamada and vibist David Friedman, are straightforward virtuosi. With a mixture of technical brilliance and stylistic instinct, Dickins builds a fascinating series of vignettes, ranging from quick-cutting, multilayered effects to simple voice and piano. The material is as varied as the treatment, including pieces by Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan, Annie Ross and Frankie Laine, among others. And not a cliche or slack moment anywhere.   All materials presented on the GMAB radio program are royalty free as agreed to by the owners thereof, and the programming is presented for educational and informational purposes as no artist, writer of publisher are paid for their appearance ”Give Me A Break” Radio Hour Podcast is supported by donations from listeners like you! … Please Click the PayPal Donate button  to help keep great programming free for all to enjoy.
