ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' WITH RAY SHASHO EPISODE 11 British entertainer Arnold George Dorsey (stage name Gerry Dorsey) had limited success as a singer, but in 1967 Engelbert Humperdinck became an overnight sensation and a household name worldwide. Humperdinck recorded one of the best-selling singles of all-time; a number-one hit song entitled “Release Me,” which thwarted The Beatles efforts of reaching the top of the charts with their double A-sided record, “Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane.” “Release Me” held the number-one slot on the UK Pop charts for six weeks and remained on the charts for a record fifty-six consecutive weeks, selling 80,000 copies a day. Humperdinck superseded the success of “Release Me” with “There Goes My Everything” and “The Last Waltz, “sweeping the Top 40 Pop charts that same year. Engelbert's charisma, good looks and magnificent vocals mirrored performers such as Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, and it quickly became evident that a new singing sensation had conquered and charmed the music world. Humperdinck's sex appeal captivated a huge female fanbase which became known as the Humperdinckers, and throughout the 70's, Humperdinck sustained the hits on the Top 40 airwaves …“Am I That Easy to Forget,” “A Man Without Love (Quando M'Innamoro),” “Les Bicyclettes de Belsize,” “The Way It Used To Be,” “I'm A Better Man (For Having Loved You),” “Winter World of Love,” “Sweetheart,” ”When There's No You,” and “Another Time, Another Place.” Engelbert Humperdinck's albums released throughout the 60's and 70's … Humperdinck relentlessly toured the world in front of adoring sold-out audiences and became a hot commodity and mainstay attraction on the Las Vegas and Atlantic City Strips. When he wasn't on the road, he'd be in the recording studio generating the hits. His last major Pop hit on the Top 40 charts came in 1976 with the brilliant and graceful “After The Lovin'” composed by Ritchie Adams and written by Alan Bernstein. In 1979, Humperdinck spawned his fourth number-one hit on the Easy Listening charts in the U.S. with, yet another Adams/ Bernstein composition entitled “This Moment In Time.” In 1983, Engelbert released his last charted single “Til You and Your Lover Are Lovers Again.” In 1999, Humperdinck released The Dance Album which featured newly recorded dance versions of six of Engelbert's greatest hits, along with five original songs. The album landed in the Top Ten on the Billboard Dance charts. Most Recently: Engelbert Humperdinck released his highly anticipated and critically acclaimed double-CD entitled… “Engelbert Calling” which features incredible duets with some of the world's most recognized names in music … including Elton John, Willie Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, Gene Simmons, and many-more. The album is released by OK! Good Records, and produced by Grammy Award-winner Martin Terefe, who is well-known for his work with Jason Mraz, James Morrison, KT Tunstall, and Mary J Blige. … I gave “Engelbert Calling” by Engelbert Humperdinck (5) Stars! Engelbert Humperdinck's career spanned nearly five decades. He's sold more than 150- million albums world-wide, including 24 certified with platinum status and 63 with gold, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of the Year” (1988), and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Engelbert has solidified his name as an international Pop legend and has established himself as one of the world's most influential artists. At 78, Humperdinck continues to tour the world and record in the studio, and like a fine wine, he just keeps getting better. Engelbert is happily married to Patricia, his wife of 50 years. The couple has 4 children and 9 grandchildren. He's managed by his son Scott Dorsey/Dorsey Productions. I had the wonderful pleasure of chatting with one of my favorite singers about his critically acclaimed release … ‘Engelbert Calling' …Engelbert's follow-up releases upcoming ... The current world tour …The early days… ‘The Humperdinckers' … Befriending ‘Elvis' …And Much-Much More! The published article, Science gave us excellent vaccines. Why bend the rules? in The Globe and Mail addresses the challenges in altering the recommended two-dose schedule for the two Canadian approved mRNA vaccines, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. In this episode of Emerging Topics, we speak to one of the authors, Dr. Alan Bernstein to tell us more about these challenges and what considerations should be taken on whether or not to delay the second-dose. Dr. Alan Bernstein is the President and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), which is a Canadian-based, global research organization. He is one of Canada's foremost scientists with several decades of work in research leadership. A graduate from the University of Toronto, he received the James Loudon Gold Medal in Physics, and completed his PhD research with James Till. After roles at the Ontario Cancer Institute and Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute, Dr. Bernstein was asked to become the founding President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, where he led the transformation of health research in Canada, creating Canada’s first health research institutes. He was also an early champion of women in science and young scientists. In 2010, Dr. Bernstein became Executive Director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise in New York, where he led an international alliance of organizations funding HIV vaccine research. Author of over 225 scientific publications, Dr. Bernstein has made landmark contributions to the study of stem cells, blood cell formation (hematopoiesis) and cancer. He chairs or is a member of advisory and review boards in Canada, the U.S., U.K., Italy and Australia. He serves as co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for Stand Up 2 Cancer Canada AND is a member of both the Sabin-Aspen Vaccine Science and Policy Group, and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In May 2020, Dr. Bernstein was appointed to Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force. His contributions to science and science policy have been recognized with numerous awards and honorary degrees, including Officer of the Order of Canada, Order of Ontario, the McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada, the Award of Excellence from the Genetics Society of Canada, the Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award, induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, and the 2017 Henry Friesen International Prize in Health Research.
Dr. Alan Bernstein says that with new variants of the novel coronavirus emerging, Canadians might need multiple vaccines for several years. “The government’s made hints of doing it. But I think the sooner we get on with it, the better,” Bernstein, who is also the head of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), said in an interview Friday. “We need domestic vaccine production capacity in the country for the next pandemic, and also for this pandemic. If there are variants arising, we may be designing second, third-generation vaccines and vaccinating the population for the next two or three years.” On Friday, Moderna announced that production delays would cut into its upcoming deliveries of vaccine doses to Canada. That followed Pfizer and BioNTech having cancelled an entire shipment of its COVID-19 vaccine to Canada this week, after reducing its previous shipment by 20 per cent, due to a temporary slowdown while its production facility in Belgium is being upgraded. It’s just over a month into Canada’s vaccine rollout, and every day seems to bring new federal-provincial bickering or logistical nightmares. It’s difficult and confusing at a time when Canadians just want to get needles into arms. The problem is, it’s not just a Canadian issue – as recent disruptions to vaccine supply have reminded us, the pandemic is global. Our response must be global, too, whether that means helping vaccinate people beyond our borders or considering the international implications of our own COVID-19 policies. Here to discuss this and more is Dr. Alan Bernstein. He’s president and CEO of the global research organization CIFAR and was the founding president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is a member of Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force. Help us get to know you! Around the world, the race is on to develop a Covid-19 vaccine. So far, nearly 200 candidates are in the works, including dozens at the human-trial stage. The optimistic experts tell us that a vaccine could be ready this year or early next, and set for distribution by mid-to-late 2021. The pessimists suggest it could take longer. But few doubt that we will be able to produce a vaccine. The question of concern, therefore, is not whether we'll develop a Covid-19 vaccine or whether it will be safe and effective. The question of concern is ‘Who will get the Covid-19 vaccine--and when?' On this episode of Open to Debate, David Moscrop talks with Dr. Alan Bernstein, president and CEO of the Canada-based global research organization CIFAR and member of Canada's Covid-19 vaccine task force.

Long Island Youth connected to the Town of Smithtown's Horizons Counseling and Education Center, The Smithtown Youth Bureau, and the Smithtown Youth Alliance had some things they needed to say to other youth. However, they needed a vehicle to be able to get those messages to as many young people as possible. They were encouraged to find their voice and use it to spread positive messages of hope and help regarding critical issues plaguing today's youth. The issues they passionately wanted to talk to young people about were: “Vaping”, “Under-Age Drinking”, “Peer-Pressure” and “Marijuana Use. These are issues they and their peers face on a daily basis. Many of their friends have fallen victim to these problems. These youth wanted to do something about it. Several Staff and Administrators of the agencies reached out to Staff Member, Silas W. Kelly, LMSW, current NASW-NYS Board Member and Self -Titled “E-Journalism Social Work Advocate”. Silas came up with the idea to reach out to his Alma Mater, Suffolk County Community College. Kelly studied Radio and TV (RTV) Production there many years ago. He pitched his idea to one of his former professors from the college, Alan Bernstein, recently retired Director of the RTV program, and one of his former Program Director's from Kelly's earlier radio days, and current College Radio Station Manager, Bill Terry, a 40-year radio veteran. Silas explained that students from the Youth Bureau wanted to produce PSA's and the possibility of current students of the college's RTV program handling all the technical production aspects of the project. The proposed collaboration was agreed upon. The Youth Bureau Students wrote PSA's to address the four issues they identified and selected music beds to be used for each one as well. Arrangements were then made to take the students to record the PSA's at Suffolk Community College's Broadcast Facilities on August 1, 2018. Current SCCC students Joe Adleman and Kevin Nessler of the Radio/TV Program handled all of the technical production of recording the PSA's and doing the final mix-downs. Through a major collaborative effort the Youth Bureau students, with the support, guidance, and encouragement of Administrators (Matthew Neebe, LCSW– Director, Drug and Alcohol Counseling Services-Town of Smithtown-NASW Member), Stacey Sanders, BA – Smithtown Youth Bureau Director, along with Staff Counselors: Kelly Devito, Alexa Stern, Madlyn Makboulian, and Cynthia Grimley – Staff, and Counselors of the Town of Smithtown's Horizons Counseling and Education Center, The Smithtown Youth Bureau, and the Smithtown Youth Alliance. The students put together a masterful PSA project. These are the topics of the PSA's in the order they are played and the students that voiced them: 1.) Vaping PSA: Alexa Grimley, Alexa Rand, and Sydney Rose 2.) Underage Drinking PSA: Abi Anand, Alexa Rand, and Vaishnavi Ravichandar 3.) Peer Pressure PSA: Alexa Grimley and Vaishnavi Ravichandar 4.) Marijuana PSA: Sydney Rose and Abi Anand ***Youth Bureau Student, Victoria DiFiore, was a PSA writer also. These PSA's have been shared by the Smithtown Youth Bureau, on various Social Media outlets, Local Newspapers, and The Internet. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kelsunn-on-the-air/support

-An interview with PawlinaDiane Covert is a Boston-based photographer who uses her talent & love of the craft to bring attention to genocide and terrorism.Diane’s work was brought to my attention by Allison Zivin at the Felshtin Society in New York. (Interview with the president of the Felshtin Society, Alan Bernstein, is here.)The Felshtin society is an organization that is commemorating the pogroms of the early 20th century that took place in what is now modern day Ukraine and other countries once occupied by the Russian, Austro-Hungarian, and Soviet empires. As a photographer, Diane sheds new light, literally, on what happened during this time. One of her three websites, called Why They Left, documents why Jews fled eastern Europe in droves during the first part of the 20th century. She joins us now to tell us about her work and some of her fascinating discoveries in the world of photography going back a century in time, and on the other side of the planet.Pawlina: Welcome Diane for joining us!Diane: Well thank you for having me. That was a nice intro!Pawlina: Oh good! Well I hope it covered everything and piqued our listeners’ interest!Diane: I’m sure you have.Pawlina: So first of all tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to be a photographer living in Boston.Diane: Well I was just one of those kids who wanted to be an artist. I always wanted to be an artist and it was when I went to art school—I was at Rhode Island School of Design and then later at Kansas City Art Institute—that I discovered that I loved photography. And I became a photographer. I switched from painting to photography, and became extremely interested in the documentary photography movement that was so prominent at that time.Pawlina: And so how did you get into documenting genocide and terrorism?Diane: That happened a number of years later. I was driving my daughter to violin lessons as a teenager. It was February 2002. And I had NPR on, which is National Public Radio in the US. They had a program on called Palestinian Women and basically they were talking about the first suicide terror attack carried out by a woman. But they put it in this strange feminist context, and it was not my understanding of feminism. It was very disturbing. I wrote them a letter in February and received my answer in August, in which they acknowledged that was not their best effort. But by then I had decided that the world didn’t really understand this idea of suicide terrorism—that you put on a suicide vest and the human being becomes the bomb, actually. And you can go up to a group of people—anywhere in the world this can happen—for any reason. And there are always disputes. And people are always angry with each other about something. It moves around the planet, but there’s usually some dispute happening somewhere. And I didn’t think that in any way we should be tying that behavior to feminism, which I saw as certainly much more noble, or…. It’s certainly non-violent. So it made me decide that I wanted to teach people—or show people—via photography, about terrorism. Now that was an interesting problem, because although there were photographs of buses, and cafes that had been blown up, most people couldn’t tolerate looking at them. They were too anxiety provoking. Horrible. So one day it popped into my head that I could use x-rays and CT scans. The doctors told me that—this is their word—that it’s sanitized. In other words, there’s no blood, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
-An interview with PawlinaUkrainian Jewish Heritage is a series that has been ongoing here at Nash Holos for several years now, sponsored by the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter of Toronto. The series … for me and also, I hope, for Nash Holos listeners … has opened a window into the fascinating, centuries-old yet little known, history of Jewish life in Ukraine. It has also presented opportunities for dialogue between people of Ukrainian and Jewish descent who are working to make this history better known.Recently I received an email from Allison Zivin of the Felshtin Society in New York. The Felshtin society is named after a Ukrainian town called Felshtin, which today is called Hvardiyske. It began as a benevolent society organized in 1905 in New York City. After a brutal pogrom in February of 1919, in which some 600 Jewish Felshtiners were massacred, the society provided refuge and relief to the survivors.A hundred years later the Felshtin society is still active and is planning commemorative events to mark the centenary of this tragic historical event. On the line to tell us more about them, the society and the history behind it is the president of the Felshtin Society, Alan Bernstein.Pawlina: Alan, welcome to Nash Holos!Alan Bernstein: Thanks very much, Pawlina.Pawlina: It’s great to find out about this story and about your society. I had no idea about it! So tell us a bit about the Felshtin Society.Alan Bernstein: The Felshtin Society was begun in 1905 and it was known as a Landsmanshaftn organization which was formed to provide fraternal and other support to people who came from Ukraine, from this part of Ukraine, and they got together as a group of neighbours and a group of family and other connections, business connections, and formed organizations to help themselves manage in the New World and also to have the opportunity to purchase burial plots because there were no cemeteries available to many of the immigrants who came from eastern Europe at that time. So there were many reasons why these societies were formed, but those were the primary goals.Pawlina: And so in 1919 when these horrible pogroms started this was an added service the society provided?Alan: Yes there were additional things… Once the pogroms occurred many of the people who were part of the society at that time became very active in providing relief to the people who had survived the pogrom. They were very active in establishing orphanages for the children who were left without parents, in a variety of different places in eastern Europe. In Proskurov, a town that is now called Khmelnitsky, and other places where there were groups of children that were left alone. So there was a tremendous amount of relief effort that got carried on after 1919 by our society as well as many others that were formed from the many other towns—more than 1200 towns—that were affected by these events.Pawlina: And they were horrific events. A lot of people got killed and the world doesn’t know about this very much. Allison told me that your society is working hard to commemorate this event because it’s the centenary coming up next year. So would you tell us a bit about the events that are coming up?Alan: Well it’s true that these topics are not as popularly discussed as the Holocaust, and the Armenian genocide and many of the other terrible things that unfortunately man does to man. So we have decided several years ago, probably about six years ago we started working on this and thinking that the hundredth anniversary of the pogrom was an important date that we should memorialize and try to use as an opportunity to shine some light on these events in history, not only for our town but for the more than 1200 other towns that were affected by these events.
