ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' WITH RAY SHASHO EPISODE 11 British entertainer Arnold George Dorsey (stage name Gerry Dorsey) had limited success as a singer, but in 1967 Engelbert Humperdinck became an overnight sensation and a household name worldwide. Humperdinck recorded one of the best-selling singles of all-time; a number-one hit song entitled “Release Me,” which thwarted The Beatles efforts of reaching the top of the charts with their double A-sided record, “Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane.” “Release Me” held the number-one slot on the UK Pop charts for six weeks and remained on the charts for a record fifty-six consecutive weeks, selling 80,000 copies a day. Humperdinck superseded the success of “Release Me” with “There Goes My Everything” and “The Last Waltz, “sweeping the Top 40 Pop charts that same year. Engelbert's charisma, good looks and magnificent vocals mirrored performers such as Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, and it quickly became evident that a new singing sensation had conquered and charmed the music world. Humperdinck's sex appeal captivated a huge female fanbase which became known as the Humperdinckers, and throughout the 70's, Humperdinck sustained the hits on the Top 40 airwaves …“Am I That Easy to Forget,” “A Man Without Love (Quando M'Innamoro),” “Les Bicyclettes de Belsize,” “The Way It Used To Be,” “I'm A Better Man (For Having Loved You),” “Winter World of Love,” “Sweetheart,” ”When There's No You,” and “Another Time, Another Place.” Engelbert Humperdinck's albums released throughout the 60's and 70's … Humperdinck relentlessly toured the world in front of adoring sold-out audiences and became a hot commodity and mainstay attraction on the Las Vegas and Atlantic City Strips. When he wasn't on the road, he'd be in the recording studio generating the hits. His last major Pop hit on the Top 40 charts came in 1976 with the brilliant and graceful “After The Lovin'” composed by Ritchie Adams and written by Alan Bernstein. In 1979, Humperdinck spawned his fourth number-one hit on the Easy Listening charts in the U.S. with, yet another Adams/ Bernstein composition entitled “This Moment In Time.” In 1983, Engelbert released his last charted single “Til You and Your Lover Are Lovers Again.” In 1999, Humperdinck released The Dance Album which featured newly recorded dance versions of six of Engelbert's greatest hits, along with five original songs. The album landed in the Top Ten on the Billboard Dance charts. Most Recently: Engelbert Humperdinck released his highly anticipated and critically acclaimed double-CD entitled… “Engelbert Calling” which features incredible duets with some of the world's most recognized names in music … including Elton John, Willie Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, Gene Simmons, and many-more. The album is released by OK! Good Records, and produced by Grammy Award-winner Martin Terefe, who is well-known for his work with Jason Mraz, James Morrison, KT Tunstall, and Mary J Blige. … I gave “Engelbert Calling” by Engelbert Humperdinck (5) Stars! Engelbert Humperdinck's career spanned nearly five decades. He's sold more than 150- million albums world-wide, including 24 certified with platinum status and 63 with gold, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of the Year” (1988), and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Engelbert has solidified his name as an international Pop legend and has established himself as one of the world's most influential artists. At 78, Humperdinck continues to tour the world and record in the studio, and like a fine wine, he just keeps getting better. Engelbert is happily married to Patricia, his wife of 50 years. The couple has 4 children and 9 grandchildren. He's managed by his son Scott Dorsey/Dorsey Productions. I had the wonderful pleasure of chatting with one of my favorite singers about his critically acclaimed release … ‘Engelbert Calling' …Engelbert's follow-up releases upcoming ... The current world tour …The early days… ‘The Humperdinckers' … Befriending ‘Elvis' …And Much-Much More! Madonna is the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She has twelve albums that have gone multi-platinum. She's won seven Grammys, and has had fifty songs reach number 1 on the Billboard Dance chart. That's more number 1s than anyone in any category, ever. In this episode, she talks about one of those number 1s: “Hung Up,” from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The song and that album were co-produced by Stuart Price, an electronic musician, producer, and DJ from the UK. “Hung Up” began in part because Madonna was working on a film with director Luc Besson (whose films include The Fifth Element and Taken). But the song also grew out of Stuart's DJ sets. Madonna has a new career-spanning album out, called Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones, and in honor of its release, Madonna and Stuart Price told me the story of how their collaboration and partnership led to one of Madonna's biggest hits. Channeling the disco, funk and soul of her youth, and the house music of the early 90's, Tyler's tracks have a magic that draws you into the essence of the song. “As a vocalist myself, I tend to pay special attention to how the vocals interact both rhythmically and melodically with the rest of the track.” But make no mistake, at the core of every track is the beat, ready to groove your body at any BPM. Tyler's production savvy can also be heard in her DJ skills spinning deep house, disco and downtempo. Whether opening for Little Dragon, or playing the private after parties for such bands as Thievery Corporation and Mayor Hawthorne's Tuxedo, Tyler brings an infectious groove to the party. She has also held residencies at the W Hotel and Ian Schrager's Clift Hotel and has been called upon frequently to play at exclusive events for the SFMOMA and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tyler is an active voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMY's) and has served as a National Trustee, as well as Governor for the Pacific NW and San Francisco Chapters. Tyler has proudly participated on many committees involving the awards process, membership, advocacy and community outreach. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon where she serves on the Board of MusicPortland, a non-profit trade association and advocacy group dedicated to establishing a viable and thriving ecosystem within Portland's music community. If you have never been to Coachella, you probably think of it as a sum of the memes that have circulated about it online — or, at the very least, as an avatar for American youth culture at its most extravagant and, well, capitalist. Today, we're going to advance the somewhat controversial thesis that Coachella is actually one of the most thought-provoking cultural happenings of the year. We're right on time, because Coachella just wrapped its first edition since the start of the pandemic, making it one of the first major music festivals to return in its wake. And Andrea was on-site to experience it. Though DIY events like Woodstock set the blueprint, the last decade or so has seen the American music festival evolve into a cutthroat, revenue-driving business. Events like Coachella represent a significant chunk of the $20 billion global concert market, and North American corporations spend more than $1.3 billion sponsoring music events annually. Over 32 million people in the US attend music festivals each year, and a 2019 Deloitte survey of millennials found that the appetite for that kind of experiential culture is very real: 57 percent of respondents said they prioritized travel and seeing the world over owning a home. No festival embodies that intersection of business and culture more than Coachella, which kicks off each spring in the Southern California desert city of Indio. Founded in 1999, Coachella has since blossomed into a three-day, two-weekend event that draws a total of around a quarter-million attendees every year (with a not-inconsequential environmental impact). It's the premiere American megafest. The spectacle to end all spectacles. In 2017 — the last year Coachella released earnings info — the event grossed $114.6 million, setting a record as the first festival franchise to earn more than $100 million. Like every year in recent memory, the 2022 lineup featured zeitgeist-defining headliners (Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, and Swedish House Mafia), along with a range of major players and rising stars in EDM, electronic, hip-hop, and rock. In short, if you want to get a real who's-who of the power players in the popular music space today, you could think of Coachella as the new Grammys. But it's also more than that. In drawing hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to this blank desert canvas, the event doubles as a mirror of culture and society at large, and of the bizarre ways that art, commerce, technology, and community intersect in our everyday lives. To attend Coachella is to check in with the state of American culture. It's to step outside our humdrum workaday existence and check in with how we're doing. Katie and Andrea working at Coachella 2018.That's why Andrea, along with a tight crew of fellow music and culture journalists, has been attending and covering Coachella for ten years. Alongside her has been Katie Bain, a longtime music reporter and critic and currently the director of Billboard Dance. Today, Katie joins us to discuss how the festival has changed — or not changed — and what this year's edition tells us about where we're at. We also discuss Coachella's roots in alternative music and rave culture, its tangled relationship with influencer culture, and the surreality, and joy, of reuniting at Coachella after two years of hunkering down at home. https://www.mixcloud.com/horatioofficial/horatio-preents-ibizaholic-radioshow-episode-52-special-guest-mix-oscar-g/ Save the best for last. I have the honour and privilege to have as guest star in my radioshow the LEGENDARY DJ AND PRODUCER , MR"DARK BEATS" himself, OSCAR G . If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you'd have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground. An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music's brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin',” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They're the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he's been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career. Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That's really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances. Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.” The early years bore some of the work for which they're still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin',” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal. “Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar. In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar's residency began to grow. The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1's in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house's first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat' in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there's something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn't think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia's gonna be all over this!'” In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York's only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford's takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous). Last year Oscar released a mixed CD “Beats” on Nervous Records and working with his Murk partner Ralph Falcon produced one of the undergrounds anthem of 2012 – Amame – which was released worldwide on Defected. He and Ralph also re-activated the seminal label Murk Records. Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it's in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I've felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it's the ultimate.”

Meet the pioneering women DJs, producers, vocalists and remixers who were part of the New York underground dance scene from disco onwards. Presented by the Queen of Clubland herself, Martha Wash, whose vocals feature on 12 number one Billboard Dance chart hits to date. All the women are linked by one nightclub, the Paradise Garage, which alongside underground clubs in Chicago and Detroit would help lay the foundation for modern dance music. Underground DJ's, clubs, and producers were not only important in breaking mainstream hits, they were also a safe haven for LGBTQ+ People of Colour. We meet Yvonne Turner, Rebecca Mackenzie, Carol Cooper, Gail Sky King and Sharon White, who were all Paradise Garage regulars from its opening in the late 70s. We follow their first steps in the music business, after the death of disco. In a cut-throat music industry, many women, including Martha, had to fight to get proper credit for their work, and recognition for their achievements is long overdue. Now in their 60s, we follow their remarkable stories over several decades, as underground dance music evolved from disco into house, striving for success in an environment which was often hostile to women. At the same time, the NYC underground scene was hit by the Aids crisis, gentrification, and the rise of hip-hop. Presenter: Martha Wash Producer: Victoria Ferran
What is an NFT? We discussed how NFTs are changing music, the future of the music business, Spotify vs. Apple, and if non-fungible tokens can become the main income stream for musicians. I also asked Matt Medved if NFT music is just a trend, what NFTs will become for DIY artists, the future of VR concerts, and most importantly how NFTs can help musicians. In 2015, Matt Medved launched Billboard Dance, Billboard's dance and electronic music channel. While growing Billboard's dance music audience more than eightfold, he played a key role in breaking future headliners like Kygo and Marshmello. In 2017, Medved co-hosted the inaugural Electronic Music Awards in Los Angeles. In 2018, Medved launched Billboard's new ranking of dance musicians titled Billboard Dance 100. Today, Matt is the senior vice president of content at lifestyle publisher Modern Luxury, a fellow music producer, and a trusted NFT advocate. If you're an artist - this episode is for you! I've only been waiting since 2002. In 2001 I fell in love with the music and the woman behind the music (how Vh1 right). Shareese Ballard respectfully known as RES, released her first debut album in 2001 but it was the third single "They Say Vision" that captivated me and helped that album take off. The entire album is CLASSIC. It screams VIBES It demands Attention, It liberates the listener and give you an eclectic Body of Work that will command "RES"pect. in 2002 and it became a number hit song on the Billboard Dance charts with it's Incredible remix that I remember requesting at the Gay clubs. My dear friend Gary said GET HER ALBUM NOW and so I did. What I didn't expect was an album to connect and liberate me as many have had in my life. When you're 19 the view of life is different. Your different. "How I Do" was released with much critical success. In 2009 She released "Black Girls Rock and an EP in 2013 called "Refried Mac" a tribute to Fleetwood Mac" as well as 2014 single release for "Hollow". In 2014 I found Res on Instagram. I instantly jumped with joy and hit follow. I even DM'd her many times to offer my gratitude and she kindly accepted and even forged a genuine artist to fan relationship. I saw Res and Myra Flynn in May 2014 at RockWood Hall and was blown away that night. She even dedicated my favorite song of hers to me "Tsunami". I cried like a bitch. It was worth it. 20 Years later upon hearing "How I Do" I have had the honor of reconnecting with Res since 2014 and her being as gracious to want to come to the Lounge and do an exclusive interview. Res then to Res now and everything in between. This is the Season 1 finale that if you would of told my 19 year old self was going to happen later in life. I probably would of said to you. WHY WAIT I WANT IT NOW DADDY. DADDY I WANT THE GOLDEN EGG NOW. Thank you Ms. Ballard aka RES for your contribution to MUSIC! More over than you for your contribution in my life. I'm with you until my last breath lady. I am proud of you and may the world either RE-discover or Discover your talent and music. Res has an online performance coming up Feb 19th 2021@5pm and Feb 20th, 2021 tickets are available now at vip.the1res.com Also please follow Res and I on social Res is on instagram and twitter @the1Res and I am on Instagram @karlos_in2020 where you can also watch the INTERVIEW on my IG. it's 3 parts but it's there. What started as a creative hobby in the calm scenes of Orange County soon became a personal quest to form something bigger than a unique venture — a modern grunge-esque landscape that takes integral instrumentation with an out of the box like sound design and casts visuals that would be reminiscent of an earlier time where rawness and vulnerability was glorified. The desire to create music and becoming an electronic artist has always been a hidden pulse in his life, whether it stemmed from his early obsessions over Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and A$AP Rocky, or analyzing the blend of fashion, film, and music altogether. It’s no longer a search for genre, but rather an evolving sound, appreciating the trials of young adulthood at age 21 and letting him and his audience grow into something beyond a young man and his music. The journey of Devault is fairly new, but 2017 has sped up his emergence into the scene, already becoming the hottest ticket for official redos of songs as well as garnering well over 10 million total streams on Spotify. This year alone, Devault has been tapped for official remixes with Rihanna, AlunaGeorge, and Kehlani, amassing millions of plays on all platforms and being a crucial part for Rihanna’s “Sex With Me” #1 spot on the Billboard Dance charts.“Everything is so accessible now that it has become quite unique to get my point across outside of just my music catalogue,” he notes. “I’m able to showcase various arts to my audience beyond sound that can convey my thoughts and past emotions. The world I’m creating is vast but specific. Dark emotion and vibrant energy in perfect sequence, and as time presses forward, it will only become more narrow and focused.”With a large demand for new material and talks of a grand live presence, Devault is showing signs of the modern new wave splash on the industry that is taking hold. His current mid-tempo electronica flare has caught ears and leaves the next chapter as exciting as the first. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On Nature as musical instrument, pauses as assets, honouring the elders, everyday ceremony. Includes a bonus track of Ram Dass x East Forest. Derived from the German translation of his last name, East Forest (aka Trevor Oswalt) creates a hypnotizing brand of music for old souls that blends achingly emotional wordlessness, ambience and contemporary classical touches with a touch of pop sensibilities and electronic flavors. Based in Boulder Utah, Oswalt performs internationally and is armed with a live show that is continually evolving; sometimes performing solo, sometimes with a string section, and often with theatrical elements and cinematic projections. With experiences offering music in a hospice, as well as backpacking explorations throughout the wilderness of the world including the Amazonian jungle searching for spiritual answers, his music is a connected journey that's been dubbed "a revelatory excursion in sound" (Under The Gun) that invites listeners to "go on a journey of self discovery" (Earmilk). He's been featured on NPR's Second Stage and Tiny Desk Contest, and shared the stage with artists ranging from Trevor Hall to Crystal Bowersox (Amer. Idol), Bluetech to Moby. His 2016 collaboration with MC YOGI, Ritual Mystical, went #1 iTunes Electronic, #8 Billboard Dance and #2 Billboard New Age. EAST FOREST's newest release, "RAM DASS" is a full length album releasing in collaboration with the acclaimed spiritual teacher. In June 2018, East Forest was invited to Maui to record brand new teachings from Ram Dass. After capturing these words of wisdom East Forest returned to his studio to compose the soundtrack to beautifully support each songs’ subject. Covering topics such as dark thoughts, nature, the soul and so much more, these songs are full of inspiration. The album will release in four “chapters” throughout 2019, culminating in a full length release on August 9, 2019. Summer-ized Sessions resident Kisch brings you the best of the best in house and tech house, with huge hitters from the likes of Kideko, Low Steppa, Will Clarke & Eli Brown, ANOTR, Prok & Fitch, Carnao Beats, a classic from Green Velvet & Hot Since 82 and much more. Residents Donna Love and label boss Shane Fernandes provide their recent favourites in this month's "resident picks", and we're incredibly excited to have month's guest mix coming from Glasgow Underground, Nervous records, Snatch and InHouse's Ant LaRock! IN THE MIX - Ant LaRock ------------------------------------------------------- Ant LaRock's first single was picked up by Todd Terry's InHouse Records, propelling him amongst House royalty. After several releases, 2015 brought major label remixes for the likes of Giorgio Moroder's pairing with Kyle Minogue on "Right Here Right Now" and future pop icon Petite Meller's "Babylove". Ant's contributions helped both singles land heavily on Billboard Dance charts as well as on dance floors. Later that year Ant produced a dirty floor-stomper for Charlotte Devaney's collaboration with Snoop Dogg on Vigin/EMI. An April 2015 collaboration with his mentor, Todd "the God" himself, welcomed the Ministry of Sound release of "Back Around" followed by the subsequent remix EP on Inhouse. 2016 went off with a bang for Ant with fresh EP's on the venerable Nervous Records. Kenny Dope then spotted Ants talents while Ant was DJing in Ibiza and took him under his wing, which resulted in releases on Dopewax & Strictly Rhythm, plus Ant DJing alongside Kenny. Adding to his high level producer connections, Ant then featured on Armand Van Helden's album Extra Dimensional with their collaboration Sacred Geometry. 2017 has seen releases on Brobot, inHouse, Dopewax, plus a string of DJ gigs globally from NYC, London, Ibiza and more. https://soundcloud.com/antlarock https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/antlarock-us Tracklist:- Hour 1 Kideko - Give It Up [Toolroom] Joshwa - Do Your Thing [Glasgow Underground] Low Steppa - You’re My Life [Defected] Will Clarke & Eli Brown - Our Love [Truesoul] Carnao Beats - Chain Of Fools (Erik Christiansen Remix) [In The Loop] Robiin - Da Party [Defined Music] Prok & Fitch - Nodding Dog [Kaluki] ANOTR - Let Me Hear Ya [Solid Grooves] Angel Moraes - Dancing Wit My Baby [Griffintown Records] Soul Reductions - Got 2 Be Loved [Classic Music Company] Casual Villain - Up To No Good [Sub Society] Green Velvet - Bigger than Prince (Hot Since 82 Remix) [Little Black Book] Hour 2 01: Ant LaRock- I Think I Live In Brooklyn Now (Part 1) unreleased 02: Ant LaRock- I Think I Live In Brooklyn Now (Part 2) unreleased 03: Ant LaRock- Don't Even Know Bro (Original Mix) unreleased 04: Ant LaRock- Don't Let Nobody (Original Mix) unreleased 05: Ant LaRock- Dirty Thoughts (Original Mix) unreleased 06: Ant LaRock- In This Time (Original Mix) unreleased 07: Ant LaRock- When You Need Somebody (Original Mix) unreleased 08: Ant LaRock- When (Original Mix) unreleased 09: Ant LaRock- What Happened To Your Face (Original Mix) unreleased 10: Ant LaRock & Roland Clark- Life Goes On (Original Mix) unreleased 11: Ant LaRock- All All Night (Original Mix) unreleased 12: Ant LaRock- The End Is Near (Original Mix) unreleased

In 2012, Mary Lambert was working three restaurant jobs when her life changed. An aspiring singer-songwriter, cellist, spoken word artist, and graduated with a Bachelors of Music Composition from Cornish College of the Arts, she had begun to establish herself around Seattle, performing slam poetry and fusing a talk-singing style into her intimate performances. She received a phone call from a friend who was working with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on their debut album, The Heist. Macklemore and Lewis were struggling to write a chorus for their new song, a marriage-equality anthem, called “Same Love”. Lambert had three hours to write the hook, and the result was the transcendent chorus to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ triple-platinum hit “Same Love,” which Lambert wrote from her vantage point of being both a Christian and a lesbian. Writing and singing the hook led to two Grammy nominations for “Song Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year”, as well as the iconic performance alongside pop legend Madonna at the 2014 Grammys. Mary then signed with Capitol Records, where she released her debut album “Heart on My Sleeve” produced by Eric Rosse (Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos) and Benny Cassette (Kanye West). Her smash single, “Secrets” launched to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance charts, and was certified RIAA Gold in 2015. The New York Times called her debut album “refreshing and severely personal”. Mary Lambert isn’t your typical pop artist. Inspired by confessional folk singers as well as spoken-word performers, she is a brutally candid writer who deals directly in her art with her past traumas. Lambert was raised in an abusive home, attempted suicide at 17, turned to drugs and alcohol before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and survived multiple sexual assaults throughout her childhood. With a list of horrors, you wouldn’t expect Mary to be disarmingly joyful, but she charms effortlessly, and the effect on her audience is bewitching. She describes her performances as “safe spaces where crying is encouraged. Beautiful and brutally honest, Mary Lambert's poetry is a beacon to anyone who's ever been knocked down―and picked themselves up again. In verse that deals with sexual assault, mental illness, and body acceptance, Ms. Lambert emerges as an important new voice in poetry, providing strength and resilience even in the darkest of times.

For our November show, we got a chance to link with prolific much loved disco singer Christine Wiltshire - all the way from Amsterdam! Check out Hans R. de Vries bio below for all the facts on the much accomplished songbird and take a listen to our two hour interview as Christine shares some of the memories from Disco's Golden Age! Singer Christine Wiltshire , originally a native of Brooklyn, New York started her professional career as in the Luther Vandross quintet LUTHER in 1976 and broke through internationally with the Patrick Adams's group MUSIQUE by 1978 with international hits as "In The Bush" and "Keep On Jumpin' ", which resulted in a Gold Record for album Musique and her group was nominated Billboard's “Best Girl Group” as part of the group “Musique” in 1978. She also composed for the group. Allthough not on the record cover of Alphonse Mouzon's produced group POUSSEZ! Christine did all (lead-) vocals for that project. Hits: "Come On And Do It" and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye". She got her biggest hit song with "Weekend", originally recorded by Patrick Adams' studio group Phreek of which Wiltshire was a member. The song was heavily played by Larry Levan yet it was commercially unavailable so it did not enter any charts 1n 1976. In the early 1980s, William Socolov, the co-owner of Sleeping Bag Records, invited Levan to make a new version of "Weekend". It became more successful than the original version, peaking at No. 54 on the British pop chart and No. 9 on the Billboard Dance chart in 1983. And in 2016 "Weekend" is again re-released with Blaqhol Remixes and has entered some European charts. Christine Wiltshire toured around the world with a.o. Luther Vandross, Zulema, Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, Samantha Sang, The Marvelettes & Marianne Faithful. As a session singer she can be heard on recordings by a.o.Lou Reed (female vocals on "Walk On The Wild Side"), Melba Moore, Keith Richards (of Rolling Stones), John Phillips (of Mamas and Papas), John Lennon (of Beatles) & Yoko Ono, Jocelyn Brown, Zulema, Candi Staton, Lolitta Holloway, Eddie Kendricks (of The Temptations), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Herbie Mann, Latoya Jackson, Cuba Gooding Sr.and Robert Palmer. Through the years Christine now also developed herself as a Jazz and Standards singer and she performs songs from The Great American Songbook at Supper Clubs and intimate venues, next to her work as a Pop and former Disco singer.

She is a singer/songwriter of pathos, beauty, sadness, tempest, magic, love of life and joy,…..she is the voice of all things” — Michael Stipe “McCluskey eases emotion and soul out of her most personal obsessional ballads with an effortless cool.” – Alan McGee, Co-Founder of Creation Records (New York City — July 19, 2016) The new single from chanteuse Angela McCluskey, You and Me, premiered today exclusively at Brightest Young Things. The complete album entitledThe Roxy Sessions will be released on September 9th via Angela’s own imprint, Bernadette Records. Recently, Angela was heard on KENDRICK LAMAR’s Is it Love ; onAZALEA BANKS’ supreme Ice Princess; with BIG GIGANTIC on the smash hit – The Little Things ;with TELEPOPMUSIKon several cuts including the worldwide #1 hit Breathe, and now the ‘featured’ vocalist behind those massive hits is stepping into the light with a new album, The Roxy Sessions. On this project Angela shares songwriting duties with her producer and collaborator, Kiran Shahani (Bitter:sweet, Supreme Beings of Leisure.) Leading up to the September 9th album release Angela will be ‘Artist in Residence’ at THE ROXY HOTEL in NYC. Angela McCluskey’s world is orbited by a diverse array of cultural superstars that both influence and inspire her works, disrupters and collaborators; Morgan Page, Michael Stipe, Cyndi Lauper (whom Angela’s guested with for years) Paul Oakenfold and Robbie Robertson. Prior to her solo career, Angela was signed to Geffen Records and toured extensively with her LA band the Wild Colonials, before joining French electronic trio, Telepopmusik with whom she wrote and recorded the world-wide hit Breathe as well asDon’t Look Back, the oft-sampled track most notably by Kendrick Lamar. During this period she caught the ear of legendary music producer Arif Mardin at BLUE NOTE RECORDS, who signed her to a solo deal and was instrumental in developing Angela’s sound and releasing her first solo album The Things We Do,co-written and produced by the inimitable Nathan Larson. Her dance track, In The Air, with Morgan Page, went to number #1 on the Billboard Dance charts and she collaborated with Electro Swing King, Parov Stelar, on Don’t Believe What They Say andPaul Oakenfold on the dance trackYou Could Be Happy. Today Brightest Young Things exclusively premieres the retro/electro cut You & Me. The track was produced by Kiran Shahani (Bitter:sweet, Supreme Beings of Leisure.) The full length ROXY SESSIONS features a wide range of styles and genres from vintage James Bond themes to surf guitar good vibes to post-modern trip-hop chill outs. Cuts such as Paris to Hollywood, a bright & breezy carefree intercontinental romance, Hit & Run a trip groove laden gem, Lets Get Lost - a jaunty dance track that will make flappers drop their champagne flutes and hit the dance floor and Electric Sky a cinematic monster of a chill-out track. The idea for the album was inspired by Time Warp, and event that Angela created, where she picks a decade and recreates a night around that theme. After recording a track for the HBO hit show Boardwalk Empire, Angela was excited to do a night around the ‘20s. It was an enormous success. Angela immediately realized the music appealed to just about every age group. Angela and her producer Kiran penned 10 original songs at the Roxy in 3 weeks. Using the roaring ’20s as inspiration, the pair added a modern beat and fashioned an addictive blend of electro swing that propels listeners to the dance floor in a feel good frenzy. Of THE ROXY SESSIONS, Angela recalls “In many ways, the theme of the album was inspired by the events surrounding it. It is a record that celebrates coming through it all—the success, the failure, the heartache and despair— and finding yourself being a little less dramatic about love and intent on just enjoying your life and being thankful for what you’ve got— and that’s something worth celebrating.” Many of Angela’s previous works have been chosen for placement in major studio films, hit television shows and high profile national ad campaigns. Her distinct sound and talent is striking and eminently memorable. Angela’s voice and artistry has appeared in pop culture juggernauts such as: HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Nike, American Express, Mercedes, ESPN, MITSUBISHI,Chicos, Fox TV’s Empire and countless more… THE ROXY SESSIONS will be released on September 9th. Angela and her band will be performing at the THE ROXY HOTEL in downtown Manhattan July 27 and through September. “Angela has the voice of an angel…completely commands the room and draws you in…mesmerizing. She once sat me down and sang to me, and I was instantly in love.” ~Norman Reedus Here is the link to preorder… Pre Order link: iTunes: http://apple.co/2bDQSxk Amazon http://amzn.to/2btFjuc

What exactly constitutes a “house classic?” For that matter, what makes any song a classic? Generally, we think songs that were so huge back in the day and had universal appeal are classics. Sure, they are but what about a song that was regional or only received minor play but for some reason or another hit all the right notes for you personally? What if it was a song that your local DJ spun but nationally most didn't pick it up because it didn't show up on the Billboard Dance chart or wasn't playing on the radio? If we only recognize those songs that were “hits” and ignore those that didn't amass a large audience, we would be ignoring a very important history of dance music and frankly music in general. Case in point; take Studio 54 vs. Paradise Garage back in the heydays of disco, say New York circa 1979. The first was for an elite crowd and generally catered to the more commercial aspect of disco, while the latter was for everyone else and catered to the smaller fringe side of disco as made popular by Larry Levan. I'm not going to go into the whole history, but both were equally important. Commercial disco (i.e. charts and radio) will be the general remembrance for most folks; but for people who dig into the history of disco, you can't overlook a lot of these lesser-known songs, which frankly are sampled and creep into the songs we listen to today. The Millennial House Classic series, as well as the previous 90's house classic series I put out, are a combination of both the big and the small tracks that played a major role in helping shape the music we listen to today. Let's face it, Duke Dumont may be doing something entirely different if it wasn't for 90's house music, which is clearly an inspiration for his work. Over the course of this series, you will hear songs that don't necessarily fit into the “classic house” category you may be accustomed to. The first ten years of the Millennium were an evolution for dance music. As technology became more accessible and the ability to easily and affordably create your own music, DJ's and producers began to draw not just on 90's house, but 80's new wave and 70's disco (much of it sampled from very obscure songs most folks had never heard before). In fact, that trend had already started in the 90's but picked up steam over the years and doesn't look like it's going to stop. For me, the house music and BackSpin series are a labor of love. If I can put a smile on somebody's face, then I've done my job. By no means are they complete, that would be impossible. Hopefully, they provide listeners with good memories and even an education for those looking to source samples and sounds for their current projects. In short, I just love doing this shit! I've got four more of these set to go, which I'll spread out over the coming month or so. For now, TURN IT UP and ENJOY! But in the vast realm of early 00s House Music Classics, it's crucial to look beyond just the chart-toppers. We shouldn't overlook tracks that might not have conquered the Billboard Dance chart but resonated deeply on local dance floors. After all, history isn't solely written by the victors; it's also penned by those who challenge norms and make lasting contributions, however underground or "fringe" they may be. Take, for instance, the influential settings of Studio 54 and Paradise Garage during disco's prime. While Studio 54 catered to a mainstream audience, Paradise Garage served up less commercial sounds that were just as vital to the genre's ecosystem. Such lesser-known tracks often inspire the samples in today's music, proving that the line between mainstream and obscure is, at best, a blurry one. That brings us to the essence of this early 00s House Music Classics collection. It's an amalgamation that celebrates both giants and underdogs—tracks that you've danced to for years alongside tunes you might be hearing for the first time. Tracks like Deep Dish's "Dreams" by Stevie Nicks in the Miami Calling Remix remind us that house music can be as atmospheric as it is danceable. Then there's the iconic "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" by Modjo, which, in its Extended Mix, encapsulates the fusion of nostalgia and freshness that marked the turn of the millennium. In this period, up-and-coming talents like Freemasons and Seamus Haji were remixing house with fresh perspectives. Their works, like the Full Intention Club remix of "Love On My Mind" with newcomer Amanda Wilson, or Moby's "I Love To Move In Here" in the Seamus Haji Remix, reflected a generational shift in dance music. These artists were leveraging new technology to draw inspiration from multiple decades—be it '70s disco or '80s new wave—creating a sonic tapestry that was both diverse and cohesive. The early 2000s were a transformative phase for house music. Advancements in technology democratized the production process, resulting in a creative explosion that blurred the lines between sub-genres. Artists weren't just paying homage to their roots; they were stretching them in exhilarating new directions. This dynamic era, one of technological strides and aesthetic evolution, is where our early 00s House Music Classics series finds its true essence. So as you groove through this collection, let it be a journey that educates, captivates, and perhaps even sparks your own creative projects. This is more than a setlist; it's an audible snapshot of an era,

Singer Chris Willis first teamed with French DJ David Guetta back in 2001 for the club hit “Just a Little More Love.” Over the next ten years, the duo would put together a string of international dance hits including “Love Don’t Let Me Go,” “Money,” “Love is Gone,” and “Gettin’ Over You,” which also featured Fergie and LMFAO. Now, Willis is stepping out on his own for his first solo EP Premium / Songs From the Love Ship v.1, which has already yielded the number one Billboard Dance track “Louder (Put Your Hands Up).” Icon Fetch talks with the Dayton native about his early roots in the church, the story of hooking up with Guetta, and filming the crazy video for “Gettin’ Over You.”
This set is a collection of my favorite tracks from 2010. A few of these actually hit #1 on the Billboard Dance chart, and some never even made it onto the chart at all. Many of these may be familiar as I've used them in previous podcasts, while a few are making their debut in this episode of "Press Play." What binds all these songs together, aside from them being my personal favorites from the last year, is the epic quality they all posses. But what makes a track "epic?" In some cases, it's the artist and the remixer teaming up. In other cases, it's the lyrics, or the emotion conveyed in both music and words. The key to "epic" for me is the way a song hits me. I can't tell you exactly what "epic" is, but I (and you) know it when I hear it. A word about my #1 and #2 picks for 2010; they're probably something you'll find unexpected: #1: Morel - Shoegazer Disco (Linus Loves Remix) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Rich Morel is practically an institution in the music industry, and "Shoegazer Disco" leaves no doubt as to why. There's almost a mythical quality to this track (thanks in part to Linus Loves' brilliant treatment in the remix). But what pushes this one into "epic," and into my #1 slot, are the lyrics: "There's a moment when everything changes, the split-second from which point, everything that follows is forever different, from what came just an instant before. Sometimes it's a phone call, sometimes it's a hand-shake, sometimes it's a look in your best friend's eyes. You never expect it. You never forget the moment, when for the first time you realize, that you can't go back ever again. I'll remember you, And I hope you'll remember me too. Again." Rich, thanks for this one; you've touched my soul. #2: Matt Alber - End of the World (Morgan Page Pop Mix Extended) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first time I heard "End of the World," I was visiting friends in L.A. My buddy plopped me down in front of the TV and told me I had to see the video for this song because the L.A. artist was gay and it featured two men dancing together. By the end of the song, I was crying. Alber had sung a ballad so beautiful, so romantic, so poignant and so powerful, that I was unable to talk for a few minutes. I immediately logged into Amazon.com and ordered a copy of his album based on this one song alone. I also wondered if "End of the World" would find its way to the dance floor, and if anyone would be able to do it justice in a remix. Well, when I saw Morgan Page's name attached to it, my fears vanished. I love this song, and this mix; I'd have to place it at #2 for the year in fact, and every time I play it in a set, someone undoubtedly either comes up to ask what it is, or to thank me for included it in the set. There is no other word to describe this song than "epic," and I'm very proud to be wrapping up this set on such a beautiful note. I realize my picks may not be your picks for the year, but hopefully, you'll have found a few of your favorites in here somewhere.
