Madonna is the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She has twelve albums that have gone multi-platinum. She's won seven Grammys, and has had fifty songs reach number 1 on the Billboard Dance chart. That's more number 1s than anyone in any category, ever. In this episode, she talks about one of those number 1s: “Hung Up,” from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The song and that album were co-produced by Stuart Price, an electronic musician, producer, and DJ from the UK. “Hung Up” began in part because Madonna was working on a film with director Luc Besson (whose films include The Fifth Element and Taken). But the song also grew out of Stuart's DJ sets. Madonna has a new career-spanning album out, called Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones, and in honor of its release, Madonna and Stuart Price told me the story of how their collaboration and partnership led to one of Madonna's biggest hits. Tyler Stone on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/17/22 About Tyler Stone - Tyler Stone is a producer/remixer, DJ and vocalist who has built her career as one of the first female house music producers, and has achieved several top ten Billboard Dance hits with her distinctive style rooted in deep house, disco, and downtempo. After receiving a degree in Jazz from Cornish College of the Arts, Tyler relocated to San Francisco to join the legendary Third Floor Productions where she cut her teeth under the tutelage of the masterful DJ EFX, and began showcasing her talents with some of Dance and Pop music's finest artists. This lead to a string of releases and remixes under the name “Ms T” on numerous dance labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Eightball, and Henry Street, with name acts including Armand Van Helden, Robin S, Crystal Waters and Kimara Lovelace as well as N'SYNC. As an integral part of the 90's San Francisco dance music scene, Tyler went on to open her own studio, Ms T Productions, and became the “go to” engineer within the house music community, working alongside such producers as Miguel Migs and Grammy nominated Jay-J and Chris Lum. Without skipping a beat, Tyler continues to push the envelope as a producer, lending her sophisticated programming to remixes and collaborations on reputable labels including Nervous and Aventura. Her tracks continue to chart, and receive regular features and playlist adds. Channeling the disco, funk and soul of her youth, and the house music of the early 90's, Tyler's tracks have a magic that draws you into the essence of the song. “As a vocalist myself, I tend to pay special attention to how the vocals interact both rhythmically and melodically with the rest of the track.” But make no mistake, at the core of every track is the beat, ready to groove your body at any BPM. Tyler's production savvy can also be heard in her DJ skills spinning deep house, disco and downtempo. Whether opening for Little Dragon, or playing the private after parties for such bands as Thievery Corporation and Mayor Hawthorne's Tuxedo, Tyler brings an infectious groove to the party. She has also held residencies at the W Hotel and Ian Schrager's Clift Hotel and has been called upon frequently to play at exclusive events for the SFMOMA and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tyler is an active voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMY's) and has served as a National Trustee, as well as Governor for the Pacific NW and San Francisco Chapters. Tyler has proudly participated on many committees involving the awards process, membership, advocacy and community outreach. If you have never been to Coachella, you probably think of it as a sum of the memes that have circulated about it online — or, at the very least, as an avatar for American youth culture at its most extravagant and, well, capitalist. Today, we're going to advance the somewhat controversial thesis that Coachella is actually one of the most thought-provoking cultural happenings of the year. We're right on time, because Coachella just wrapped its first edition since the start of the pandemic, making it one of the first major music festivals to return in its wake. And Andrea was on-site to experience it. Though DIY events like Woodstock set the blueprint, the last decade or so has seen the American music festival evolve into a cutthroat, revenue-driving business. Events like Coachella represent a significant chunk of the $20 billion global concert market, and North American corporations spend more than $1.3 billion sponsoring music events annually. Over 32 million people in the US attend music festivals each year, and a 2019 Deloitte survey of millennials found that the appetite for that kind of experiential culture is very real: 57 percent of respondents said they prioritized travel and seeing the world over owning a home. No festival embodies that intersection of business and culture more than Coachella, which kicks off each spring in the Southern California desert city of Indio. Founded in 1999, Coachella has since blossomed into a three-day, two-weekend event that draws a total of around a quarter-million attendees every year (with a not-inconsequential environmental impact). It's the premiere American megafest. The spectacle to end all spectacles. In 2017 — the last year Coachella released earnings info — the event grossed $114.6 million, setting a record as the first festival franchise to earn more than $100 million. Like every year in recent memory, the 2022 lineup featured zeitgeist-defining headliners (Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, and Swedish House Mafia), along with a range of major players and rising stars in EDM, electronic, hip-hop, and rock. In short, if you want to get a real who's-who of the power players in the popular music space today, you could think of Coachella as the new Grammys. But it's also more than that. In drawing hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to this blank desert canvas, the event doubles as a mirror of culture and society at large, and of the bizarre ways that art, commerce, technology, and community intersect in our everyday lives. To attend Coachella is to check in with the state of American culture. It's to step outside our humdrum workaday existence and check in with how we're doing. Katie and Andrea working at Coachella 2018.That's why Andrea, along with a tight crew of fellow music and culture journalists, has been attending and covering Coachella for ten years. Alongside her has been Katie Bain, a longtime music reporter and critic and currently the director of Billboard Dance. Today, Katie joins us to discuss how the festival has changed — or not changed — and what this year's edition tells us about where we're at. We also discuss Coachella's roots in alternative music and rave culture, its tangled relationship with influencer culture, and the surreality, and joy, of reuniting at Coachella after two years of hunkering down at home. https://www.mixcloud.com/horatioofficial/horatio-preents-ibizaholic-radioshow-episode-52-special-guest-mix-oscar-g/ Save the best for last. I have the honour and privilege to have as guest star in my radioshow the LEGENDARY DJ AND PRODUCER , MR"DARK BEATS" himself, OSCAR G . If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you'd have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground. An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music's brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin',” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They're the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he's been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career. Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That's really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances. Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.” The early years bore some of the work for which they're still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin',” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal. “Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar. In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar's residency began to grow. The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1's in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house's first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat' in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there's something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn't think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia's gonna be all over this!'” In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York's only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford's takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous). Last year Oscar released a mixed CD “Beats” on Nervous Records and working with his Murk partner Ralph Falcon produced one of the undergrounds anthem of 2012 – Amame – which was released worldwide on Defected. He and Ralph also re-activated the seminal label Murk Records. Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it's in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I've felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it's the ultimate.”

Meet the pioneering women DJs, producers, vocalists and remixers who were part of the New York underground dance scene from disco onwards. Presented by the Queen of Clubland herself, Martha Wash, whose vocals feature on 12 number one Billboard Dance chart hits to date. All the women are linked by one nightclub, the Paradise Garage, which alongside underground clubs in Chicago and Detroit would help lay the foundation for modern dance music. Underground DJ's, clubs, and producers were not only important in breaking mainstream hits, they were also a safe haven for LGBTQ+ People of Colour. We meet Yvonne Turner, Rebecca Mackenzie, Carol Cooper, Gail Sky King and Sharon White, who were all Paradise Garage regulars from its opening in the late 70s. We follow their first steps in the music business, after the death of disco. In a cut-throat music industry, many women, including Martha, had to fight to get proper credit for their work, and recognition for their achievements is long overdue. Now in their 60s, we follow their remarkable stories over several decades, as underground dance music evolved from disco into house, striving for success in an environment which was often hostile to women. At the same time, the NYC underground scene was hit by the Aids crisis, gentrification, and the rise of hip-hop. Presenter: Martha Wash Producer: Victoria Ferran
What is an NFT? We discussed how NFTs are changing music, the future of the music business, Spotify vs. Apple, and if non-fungible tokens can become the main income stream for musicians. I also asked Matt Medved if NFT music is just a trend, what NFTs will become for DIY artists, the future of VR concerts, and most importantly how NFTs can help musicians. In 2015, Matt Medved launched Billboard Dance, Billboard's dance and electronic music channel. While growing Billboard's dance music audience more than eightfold, he played a key role in breaking future headliners like Kygo and Marshmello. In 2017, Medved co-hosted the inaugural Electronic Music Awards in Los Angeles. In 2018, Medved launched Billboard's new ranking of dance musicians titled Billboard Dance 100. I've only been waiting since 2002. In 2001 I fell in love with the music and the woman behind the music (how Vh1 right). Shareese Ballard respectfully known as RES, released her first debut album in 2001 but it was the third single "They Say Vision" that captivated me and helped that album take off. The entire album is CLASSIC. It screams VIBES It demands Attention, It liberates the listener and give you an eclectic Body of Work that will command "RES"pect. in 2002 and it became a number hit song on the Billboard Dance charts with it's Incredible remix that I remember requesting at the Gay clubs. My dear friend Gary said GET HER ALBUM NOW and so I did. What I didn't expect was an album to connect and liberate me as many have had in my life. When you're 19 the view of life is different. Your different. "How I Do" was released with much critical success. In 2009 She released "Black Girls Rock and an EP in 2013 called "Refried Mac" a tribute to Fleetwood Mac" as well as 2014 single release for "Hollow". In 2014 I found Res on Instagram. I instantly jumped with joy and hit follow. I even DM'd her many times to offer my gratitude and she kindly accepted and even forged a genuine artist to fan relationship. I saw Res and Myra Flynn in May 2014 at RockWood Hall and was blown away that night. She even dedicated my favorite song of hers to me "Tsunami". I cried like a bitch. It was worth it. 20 Years later upon hearing "How I Do" I have had the honor of reconnecting with Res since 2014 and her being as gracious to want to come to the Lounge and do an exclusive interview. Res then to Res now and everything in between. This is the Season 1 finale that if you would of told my 19 year old self was going to happen later in life. I probably would of said to you. WHY WAIT I WANT IT NOW DADDY. DADDY I WANT THE GOLDEN EGG NOW. Thank you Ms. Ballard aka RES for your contribution to MUSIC! More over than you for your contribution in my life. I'm with you until my last breath lady. I am proud of you and may the world either RE-discover or Discover your talent and music. Res has an online performance coming up Feb 19th 2021@5pm and Feb 20th, 2021 tickets are available now at vip.the1res.com Also please follow Res and I on social Res is on instagram and twitter @the1Res and I am on Instagram @karlos_in2020 where you can also watch the INTERVIEW on my IG. it's 3 parts but it's there. Or at @loslounge_podcast. I also am on Twitter @LosLounge. Thank you for being with me all season 1 Season 2 is in the works and won't be too far away I promise you that.
