Title: Opera's Best Holiday Moments
ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' WITH RAY SHASHO EPISODE 11 British entertainer Arnold George Dorsey (stage name Gerry Dorsey) had limited success as a singer, but in 1967 Engelbert Humperdinck became an overnight sensation and a household name worldwide. Humperdinck recorded one of the best-selling singles of all-time; a number-one hit song entitled “Release Me,” which thwarted The Beatles efforts of reaching the top of the charts with their double A-sided record, “Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane.” “Release Me” held the number-one slot on the UK Pop charts for six weeks and remained on the charts for a record fifty-six consecutive weeks, selling 80,000 copies a day. Humperdinck superseded the success of “Release Me” with “There Goes My Everything” and “The Last Waltz, “sweeping the Top 40 Pop charts that same year. Engelbert's charisma, good looks and magnificent vocals mirrored performers such as Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, and it quickly became evident that a new singing sensation had conquered and charmed the music world. Humperdinck's sex appeal captivated a huge female fanbase which became known as the Humperdinckers, and throughout the 70's, Humperdinck sustained the hits on the Top 40 airwaves …“Am I That Easy to Forget,” “A Man Without Love (Quando M'Innamoro),” “Les Bicyclettes de Belsize,” “The Way It Used To Be,” “I'm A Better Man (For Having Loved You),” “Winter World of Love,” “Sweetheart,” ”When There's No You,” and “Another Time, Another Place.” Engelbert Humperdinck's albums released throughout the 60's and 70's … Humperdinck relentlessly toured the world in front of adoring sold-out audiences and became a hot commodity and mainstay attraction on the Las Vegas and Atlantic City Strips. When he wasn't on the road, he'd be in the recording studio generating the hits. His last major Pop hit on the Top 40 charts came in 1976 with the brilliant and graceful “After The Lovin'” composed by Ritchie Adams and written by Alan Bernstein. In 1979, Humperdinck spawned his fourth number-one hit on the Easy Listening charts in the U.S. with, yet another Adams/ Bernstein composition entitled “This Moment In Time.” In 1983, Engelbert released his last charted single “Til You and Your Lover Are Lovers Again.” In 1999, Humperdinck released The Dance Album which featured newly recorded dance versions of six of Engelbert's greatest hits, along with five original songs. The album landed in the Top Ten on the Billboard Dance charts. Most Recently: Engelbert Humperdinck released his highly anticipated and critically acclaimed double-CD entitled… “Engelbert Calling” which features incredible duets with some of the world's most recognized names in music … including Elton John, Willie Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, Gene Simmons, and many-more. The album is released by OK! Good Records, and produced by Grammy Award-winner Martin Terefe, who is well-known for his work with Jason Mraz, James Morrison, KT Tunstall, and Mary J Blige. … I gave “Engelbert Calling” by Engelbert Humperdinck (5) Stars! Engelbert Humperdinck's career spanned nearly five decades. He's sold more than 150- million albums world-wide, including 24 certified with platinum status and 63 with gold, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of the Year” (1988), and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Engelbert has solidified his name as an international Pop legend and has established himself as one of the world's most influential artists. At 78, Humperdinck continues to tour the world and record in the studio, and like a fine wine, he just keeps getting better. Engelbert is happily married to Patricia, his wife of 50 years. The couple has 4 children and 9 grandchildren. He's managed by his son Scott Dorsey/Dorsey Productions. I had the wonderful pleasure of chatting with one of my favorite singers about his critically acclaimed release … ‘Engelbert Calling' …Engelbert's follow-up releases upcoming ... The current world tour …The early days… ‘The Humperdinckers' … Befriending ‘Elvis' …And Much-Much More! Fright Night (1985) has the sexiest Humperdink we've ever seen.Things We Learned:SMC and Kacey think Taylor loves Now and Laters (she does), but what they meant was Hi-chews. Hi-chews are like… the Lacroix of Starbursts. Also, Now and Laters are called this because they're made of a soft taffy on the outside with a harder center that's not hard candy but like… firmer taffy and it takes longer for it to dissolve. So the outside of the candy is quickly dissolved. With episodes nearing 350 in the STAGES archive, it's time to revisit conversations featured in our previous seasons. STAGES spotlights such episodes, in case you missed them the first time ‘round - or so you can simply savour, a second listen. Either way, you'll be accessing precious oral histories from the people who were there, on and around our stages. In February 2020 we lost a great artist. Maureen Howard was a star across many platforms - radio, television, musical theatre, operetta and opera. STAGES was enraptured to be in her company and record a conversation of such extraordinary history, contagious humour and fierce reflection. Long after the recording stopped, Maureen entertained with anecdote and cheeky reminiscence. It was a thrill to be in her audience - even in her kitchen! A brief stint as a hairdresser lead Maureen Howard to a career in musical theatre and then Opera, after a customer enquired if she'd planned to do anything with her singing. Maureen had been a regular performer on Channel 7's Sunnyside Up in the early years of television in Australia. Roles in The Music Man, Man of La Mancha and The Most Happy Fella for the Garnett Carroll organisation quickly followed, allowing her to explore the dynamic quality of her voice. Proving that she had an instrument that could extend to Opera, she soon established herself as one of the country's leading voices, singing roles in Madama Butterfly, Tosca and La Boheme during the 1970's. In recent years she returned to Opera Australia to perform in Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and as The Witch in Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel. Her final performance was that of Old Heidi in Sondheim's Follies - in Concert, singing the ethereal ‘One More Kiss'. Maureen was a wonderful human being. She was also a very fine artist of whichever form she chose to interpret. Please enjoy this treasured memory from the STAGES archive. Plot:-I like the grandpa previews the whole movie explaining what was going to be in the movie-Robin Wright was hot.-Epic opening, love and loss.-No way they didn't know how funny the name Humperdink was.-Pretty epic beginning... Royalty, a wedding, kidnapping.-Love the use of miniatures with the boats. It's very awesomely 80's.-OK, so the plan is to kidnap the princess, take her to another land, kill her, and make the price think it was those people to start a war?-Inigo Montoya is a very honorable guy, helping Wesley up the cliff-When they jump off the rock while fighting, you can definitely tell there is a pad where they land.-The fight is so over te top, but in a good way.-Its amazing how fast this movie moves. Elwes wasn't the first choice for WestleyIn fact, Oscar winner, Colin Firth was originally in the running to play Cary Elwes.2. Wrestler André the Giant didn't actually do any heavy liftingFollowing a major back surgery, Andre the Giant (André René Roussimoff) could not lift any heavy objects, instead, the seven foot and 540-pound actor used a stunt double for the majority of his more physical scenes. 3. One of the final scenes did not make the final cutBefore it was cut from the film, Fred Savage originally walked over to his window, after his grandfather had left and sees Fezzik, Inigo, Westley, and Buttercup all on riding on their white horses.4. Patinkin was thinking of his late father when he delivered his most famous lineWhen Patinki uttered his Spanish vow, "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die," he was sadly thinking of his father who has died of cancer a few years prior to reading the script.5. Elwes filmed many scenes with a broken toe Six weeks into production, Elwes had an accident in an ATV (which was used to transport Andre on set, because he didn't fit into the crew van), leaving him with a broken toe. Initially, Elwes tried to hide his injury from the director, but they ended up using trick photography to hide his limp in many of his scenes. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. My guest this week is Greg Matza. If you don't recognize the name, you're in that special column of folks that is about to realize that you should know that name. He's my brother from another mother, the Milli to my Vanilli, the Humperdink to my Engelberg. Long story short, he and I started our creative partnership at a staff retreat ahead of our first summer working for the Family Vacation Center at UC Santa Barbara. Family camp. And i do mean CAMP. He or I started singing Hey There from Pajama Game and the other joined in from across the room and that was our first collaboration in entertainment. Since then, we've produced 2 plays, 4 cookbooks, 3 web series, 1 film and dozens of unfinished works of brilliance. Sure, he's a successful Silicon Valley salesman and his common law father in law, father in common law? Oh whatever, just won the nobel prize in economics. But, at the end of the day, he is my oldest friend, one with whom I share 23 years of travel stories. Man do we eat well. Here's our chat.
Another great voice from the Golden Days of Radio.

Hannah Rankin grew up on a sheep farm near Loch Lomond. Earlier this year she made history by becoming the first Scottish woman to win a boxing world title when she became the IBO (International Boxing Organisation) super-welterweight champion. She’s recently returned from winning her first big fight in America. But, as she tells Michael Berkeley, she is just as likely to be found in the woodwind section of an orchestra as she is in a boxing ring, because Hannah is also a highly accomplished bassoonist. She studied at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music, and now teaches in schools and performs with the London Sinfonietta, at the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre, and the London Coliseum. With her fellow Royal Academy of Music alumni she founded the Coriolis Quintet. Known on the professional boxing circuit as the Classical Warrior, Hannah explains how she balances her two lives, in the ring and on the stage, and what it’s like building up to a really big fight. She chooses music by Mendelssohn and by Sibelius from early in her musical career, which reminds her of northern landscapes, and operas by Humperdink and by Tchaikovsky - composers who share her love of the bassoon. And we hear music that transports Hannah back to summers shearing sheep on the family farm. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3

In this episode, the girls chatter away through the final potpourri episode of 2016. Susie muses on Santa's flatulence levels, and Danie has a sock break-through. Stuff & Things The PACE collaboration from Danie and Sarah of Imagined Landscapes has been revealed! Check out the Prairie Hills Shawl pattern and the Prairie Gold colorway. Susie released her Alight Cowl pattern! Contest We’re gearing up for the 2016 Legend-Prairie contest! Please contact us if you’re interested in donating a giveaway prize. Thank you to Sari of The Girl Who Crafted who donated a Blue Lily Mitt kit as a prize, and Sarah of Imagined Landscapes who donated a copy of her Prairie Hills Shawl pattern! Finished Projects Susie started and finished her Striped Kid Hat, and finished her Close To You shawl. Danie finished another two squares on her Micah's Blanket, and started and finished two Pussyhats for the Women's March on Washington. Current Projects Susie knit just a little bit on her Vedai sweater, edged a couple of squares on her Oh Scrap Blanket, and added a couple of inches on the third Newborn Bonnet & Wrap Set. She also worked on the second of her Directional Socks, and cast-on a Come What May shawl using KnitCircus Lavish in Humperdink, Humperdink, Humperdink. Danie has been working on her Micah's Blanket, and on her First Hermione's Everyday Socks. Project: Reconsideration Susie pretty quickly reconsidered her Luckdragon Shawl. She's going to save the pattern for when she's more in a "thinking-knit" place. Danie is considering frogging her Handspun Elda Cardigan and reknitting it into a Harvest cardigan. Enhance the Stash Susie acquired some yarn from The Lemonade Shop - a skein of DK in Spectravision and two skeins of Mighty Sock in Witch, Please, which may or may not become a Sugar Plum Shawl. Danie treated herself to some much-deserved goodies from the Bar Maids. New to Me Susie tried out the yarn-themed video game called Unravel, hopped on the Instant Pot bandwagon, and put a purple streak in her hair.
