For whatever reason, 1952, the year of Truman Bethurum's encounters with saucer Captain Aura Rhanes and her crew, was a watershed year for UFO interactions and the Contactee movement.  The period is mainly known for marking an era of peaceable and friendly exchanges with aliens, deAL266: Bethurum Part 2 – UFOs and the Occult spite the predictable fears of the "other" depicted in 1950s Science Fiction and fueled by Cold War tensions.  Sometimes colloquially referred to as "Space Brothers" (which could include Bethurum's "Space Sister" Rhanes) or occasionally an alien race of "Nordics," these benevolent otherworldly visitors often urged humans to live in harmony, to care for our planet, and warned us of the dangers of the atomic age.  The overall message is they were here to protect us from ourselves.  But as welcoming and comforting as that sounds, there is a much-overlooked aspect of some of the personalities involved in this generation of heralds – a fair number of them had ties to occult beliefs and practices.  From Aleister Crowley's magick and Jack Parsons to the wackier exploits of George Hunt Williamson, MIB threats to Albert K. Albert K Bender, creator of the International Flying Saucer Bureau is an interesting story in and of itself, least of which being the creation of the term we all know to this day: The Men in Black. His story truly is remarkable.

They are a shadowy component of the UFO phenomena, they appear after a sighting to silent witnesses and warn them away but who are the men in black and where did they come from?In 1947 In the earliest days of the modern UFO era Ray Palmer would write an account of and UFO crash near Maury Island, following this crash the witness would claim he was harassed by a  man dressed all in black who told him never to speak of the incident again.  Later the witnesses would claim the incident was a hoax and never talk about it again.In 1952 Enthusiast and Researcher  Albert K Bender would found the world's first UFO CLUB the IBFS and publish a successful quarterly newsletter for its  members. Shortly after founding the Bureau Bender began to run into various problems and a year later in 1953 he shut down the IFSB after being visited by three strange men in black suits who told him to leave the topic alone and to stop publishing his newsletter.  Gray Barker one of the IFSB members would record Benders incident in his 1956 his book They knew to Much About Flying saucers to paint a story about mysterious government shadow men dressed  in black who had harassed Bender.  These entities would come to be called the Men In Black. Several years later in 1962 Bender would write his own book Flying saucers the 3 men in which he  revealed the reason he had disbanded the IFSB. He claimed the that the MIB were of extraterrestrial origin and that they had their own agenda, a 15 year mission, they had warned Bender not to speak until after their mission was completed and they had left, which he did.  Are the MIB just a legend, a hoax? A legend by a clever writer created from a retelling of a hallucination? Welcome to Episode Eight of the Cryptid Ramblers Podcast. In this episode we will be diving in the creepy and malevolent companions of the ever elusive Men in Black, that's right, we are going to be looking into the Women in Black. We are back briefly in Bridgeport, Connecticut and the encounter involving a relative of Albert K Bender who had his own MiB experience in 1962. Regular listeners will not be shocked to learn that we wind up back in West Virginia hot on the tail of WiB's and their interactions in the 1950's, involving none other than John Keel. Certainly the most compelling encounter we come across takes us to Moapa Valley, California and a visit experienced by Truman Bethurum. In 1953 he meets with Captain Aura Rhanes, a reported WiB from the planet Clarion. Are the Women in Black just a companion of the Men in Black, being as elusive and out of touch, or do they have their own sinister plans. Take a listen into these creepy stories as we try to uncover the truth.

We are back and dressed in black, dapper in fact...  Following the supposed strange group of agents known as the Men in Black.  What is this shadowy group of figures up to,  Who are they? (7:22)  Fronk explains the typical events of a visit from the Men in Black. (8:00)  Harold Dahl in 1947 claimed to have been warned to not speak about a UFO sighting after being visited by a man in a black suit in Puget Sound. (10:01)  Two Army A2 Intel Officers flew from CA to WA and their B25 Bomber ironically crashed during the return flight of the trip. (10:24)  Kenneth Arnold and Dahl made the account public through a variety of publications. (13:30)  Ufologist and Demonologist  John Keele, who wrote, "The Mothman Prophecies," stated some MIB encounters are just mundane events.  He also states that UFO intelligences are not extraterrestrials but ultraterrestrials. (16:13)  The boys discuss the connections with the paranormal and extraterrestrials. (19:15)  Dave goes into the accounts of Albert K. Bender of Bridgeport, CT.  In 1952 he created the IFSB (International Flying Saucer Bureau).  After one year he shut down the program after he was visited by three Men in Black. (20:55) Edgar R. Jared and Harold Fulton received visits from these dark figures as well and shut down their own UFO organizations. (22:26)  Mike fills us in about the Journal of American Folklore's articles in the 1980's about the MIB, including Richard Sharp Shaver writings of the species, The Deros. (30:18)  After 9 years of silence, Bender wrote a book called, "Flying Saucers and the Three Men."  Claiming they were beings from the planet Kazik. (31:33)  Fronk gets into some more accounts of visits from the MIB.  In 1976, Dr. Herbert Hopkins was studying a UFO encounter and had someone with no hair, pale complexion, no lips and a black suit.  He showed him a coin that disappeared, threatened him and disappeared himself. (34:00)  In 1957 Howard Menger was visited by two men in black suits and was told to stop researching UFO's, also in 1965 Rex Heflin took photos of a UFO and was visited days later for those photos.  Years later the photos reappear in his mailbox. (35:05)  In April 1966 in Norwalk, CT two boys saw a UFO and a man dressed in black claiming to be from the government came to the school and questioned the children. (36:00)  Mike brings us up to speed about an encounter that was captured by CCTV in 2008 in a Hotel in Ontario, Canada.  They wore black and appeared as identical twins. The man introduced himself as Major Richard French. - One such strange encounter involves a strange man in a black suit at Max's Kansas City, New York. - Dr. Herbert Hopkins. The MIB informed Hopkins that was correct. “Barney didn't have a heart,” said the MIB, “just like you no longer have a coin.” -Dr. Albert K. Bender was a well-written and extremely intelligent researcher who founded the International Flying Saucer Bureau. He had an encounter with a Man In Black that would change his life forever. - In 1947 Harold Dahl and his son were salvaging logs on a fishing boat when they spied six donut-shaped crafts flying in the air above them. The crafts drop molten waste onto the lake, which allegedly kills Dahl's dog and injures his son. The FBI made an official report about the incident. - One of the most famous photos in the ufo/paranormal field, taken by Jim Templeton, has an MIB story attached to it that we had never hear before. - Paul Miller was returning home after a hunting trip when they saw a “luminous” disc in the sky. The next day he had a life changing meeting with some officials from his job with the Airforce. - Dan Aykroyd has come forward with his story about how he was taping a show about the paranormal. He stepped out to take a phone call from Britney Spears, who was asking him to appear on Saturday Night Live with her, when he noticed a black ford parked across the street. A tall man stepped out of the Ford, and stared him down. Aykroyd turned away for a moment, and then turned back, to find that the man and the car had completely vanished. After he finished his phone call, he returned to the studio to learn that his show had been cancelled and he was ordered to stop filming immediately. - 1967: Robert Richardson was driving his car at night in Toledo, Ohio, when he hit something, which, he claimed, then vanished. MIB showed up. - Brad Steiger, who was a very heavily involved UFO researcher, had multiple encounters with unexplained government agents. -
