Welcome to Episode #11 of the 4ever in Electric Dreams & CONFESSIONS OF A CURLY MIND co-production - Supple & Lean | A Geekcast. Presented by Imran Mirza from London, UK, and Vahé Vishapakagh Koshayan from Melbourne, Australia, for this episode the duo delve into all things related to 'The Crow'. With origins from James O'Barr's 1989 comic book series 'The Crow', the impassioned piece of work spawned its first on-screen iteration with the Alex Proyas-helmed movie in 1994. Starring the dearly departed Brandon Lee in a career-defining performance, the film went on to achieve cult status and has been revered since its release now 31 years ago. Following the 1994 original, subsequent entries within the franchise were marked by 'The Crow: City of Angels' (1996), 'The Crow: Salvation' (2000) and 'The Crow: Wicked Prayer' (2005) with neither generating favourable reviews or the money required to really justify the iteration that would follow. 'The Crow: Stairway to Heaven' - the 1998 TV series - perhaps generated the most favourable reviews but didn't get the chance to continue their story with the planned second season which never came to fruition; yet more Crows followed with a mix of the stories recounting the forlorn tragedy of the ill-fated lovers Eric Draven and Shelly Webster amongst others who were wronged by the harsh cruelty of an unjust life. The 30 year milestone has been marked by the release of the latest iteration of the vengeful vigilante, this time with Rupert Sanders in the director's chair leading a cast of Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and Danny Huston. With Vahé and Imran both long-time fans of the 1994 original, the time seemed right to have a lengthy chat about their affections for Proyas' masterpiece, delve into the comics for the first time and revisit the sequels and reboots in an incredibly expansive conversation into James O'Barr's incredible world. The show today features original music from Supple & Lean featuring Shelly Draven with 'Your Dark Path'. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Emanating from London, UK, the 4ever in Electric Dreams website and podcast network is designed to help us celebrate the things we loved growing up and the things that continue to excite and inspire us today. With podcast episodes of the Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind, 90s State of Mind and Supple & Lean, there's lots of reasons to visit us again and again, and to join us in our ongoing celebration of the things we can't leave behind.

Starring Brandon Lee as the titular Crow/Eric Draven, the film holds the unfortunate distinction of being Lee's final screen role, as he tragically lost his life due to an accident during production. A magnificent showcase of director Proyas' capable eye for production design and cinematography, The Crow is lovingly lit and framed, employing a wide variety of special effects techniques to bring its nightmarish and borderline supernatural vision of Detroit to life. Possessed of a terrific cast of noteworthy character actors, but hamstrung by a simplistic narrative and thin characterizations, The Crow is a film that is unfortunately far from the sum of its parts, however its aesthetic charms are truly remarkable. The film follows an amnesiac named John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) accused of murder. Pursuing Murdoch are the police and supernatural beings called the Strangers. Other characters include Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland), Inspector Bumstead (William Hurt), and John's wife Emma (Jennifer Connelly). General audiences might remember Alex Proyas' 1994 movie The Crow for the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee. And this episode, Brian Skutle of the Sonic Cinema Podcast helps us discuss why. Normally, The Crow would have been a contender for our sister podcast, Franchise Detours. However, Proyas' film tells a standalone story. And besides, Brian's love for this film certainly merits the Close Watch treatment. We'll discuss what The Crow means to him, how its genre-blending tone sets it apart, and what most people misunderstand about it. Join us as we journey back to the alternative music, goth aesthetic, and pre-MCU comic book movies of the 1990s as we take flight with The Crow. SYNOPSIS The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by gang members. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and becomes a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission. Dark City Dark City is a 1998 neo-noir science fiction film directed by Alex Proyas and starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O'Brien, and William Hurt. The screenplay was written by Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David S. Goyer. Sewell plays John Murdoch, an amnesiac man who finds himself suspected of murder. The Space Brains discuss the noir style, nature vs nurture and a lot about the influences and homages in Dark City. The possibility that Dark City is actually the sequel to Mary Poppins is raised.

Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski prefers to take a realistic, documentary approach to most of the movies he shoots. His latest film, the western News of the World, is primarily shot outside using natural light, in a style Dariusz likes to call “well-observed” documentary. As with many of director Paul Greengrass's films, News of the World relies on a Steadicam and hand-held cameras to give it a more realistic and intimate feel. Daruisz watched a few Westerns to get ideas for his approach to News of the World, such as The Searchers and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Dariusz got his start after film school shooting music videos back in the 1980's and 90's, such as Suzanne Vega's “My Name is Luka.”  One of his influences was the late cinematographer Harris Sevides, whose approach to music videos for Madonna and R.E.M. was softer and more cinematic. Daruisz and several future icons of cinema were all working on music videos at the time, and he worked with directors David Fincher, Alex Proyas and Gore Verbinski. They all wanted to make movies and were just making music videos to stay employed. As trained filmmakers, Dariusz feels they elevated the music video to an art, bringing a film sensibility to it with longer shots and cinematic lighting. Though Daruisz found it hard to break into film at first, his work on music videos and commercials eventually got him there. Director Alex Proyas hired Dariusz as director of photography for the films Romeo is Bleeding, The Crow, and Dark City. The two used a dark and gritty music video aesthetic for shooting 1994's The Crow. Tragically, star Brandon Lee was killed by a faulty blank bullet during filming and the movie was finished without him, using early face replacement digital technology. For Dark City, Dariusz's next film with Proyas, he was influenced by films such as Metropolis and German expressionist art. He used sodium vapor lights on the set, which created a very orange and surreal glow. To add to the sickly green colors in the film, they decided not to use the correct fluorescent tubes in the automat scenes, or color correct the result. Dariusz went on to work with director Gore Verbinski on The Mexican and Pirates of the Caribbean. At the time, Pirates was anything but a sure thing. It was up against the biggest stigma in Hollywood- every pirate movie that had been made up until that point was a huge flop. Plus, the character Captain Jack Sparrow was a complete antihero, and though Johnny Depp was a known actor, he wasn't yet a huge movie star. After shooting several Pirates movies, Dariusz went on to work with Tim Burton on Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland, then with Ridley Scott on Prometheus , The Martian, and Raised By Wolves, all science fiction movies or series that are heavy on special effects. For Dariusz, even if a film is science fiction, it needs to feel as though it is grounded in its own reality, so it was important to be in constant communication with the VFX supervisor to figure out how they would collaborate on set. News of the World is playing in some theaters and is available to stream on VOD. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

Let's travel back to the late 1990s. Think of a sci-fi thriller that expertly wraps big ideas like the nature of reality, identity and human nature into a hyper-stylized environment heavily influenced by film noir. Now set aside your love for The Matrix because this episode we're talking all about Dark City. The 1998 film from director Alex Proyas (The Crow, I, Robot) — which shares some aesthetic and, in fact, production elements with the Wachowskis' release — may have been a box office underperformer, but in the years since its theatrical run, the film has emerged as a critical darling and achieved cult classic status. So who better to talk about a bonafide cult film than one of the hosts of CF3: Cult Fans, Films & Finds. Jeff Johnson joins the show to delve into what makes Dark City such a compelling film to watch and re-watch, speculate about why it failed to connect with audiences and unravel the mystery behind Proyas' intricate storytelling. Tag along as we break down the film Roger Ebert called "a great visionary achievement." Sleep later. Listen now. SYNOPSIS (courtesy of Warner Bros.) Separated from his wife Emma, amnesiac John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings. They built the city to see what makes us tick. Last night one of us went off. What if you woke one morning to realize that every memory, every emotion, every fact you believed true about your life had been manufactured by someone else and placed in your mind? In this fascinating and provocative science fiction tale, John Murdoch—wanted for a series of brutal murders—realizes that everything he believes about himself is a lie. Murdoch's bittersweet childhood, his love for his estranged wife (Jennifer Connelly) and the hideous series of murders are the creation of a group of shadowy creatures known only as "The Strangers," who manipulate minds for their own ends. Alone, with his newfound awareness, Murdoch begins to fight back. William Hurt is the evil Detective hunting him down, and Kiefer Sutherland is the doctor helping him stay one step ahead of his adversaries. Considering how much critics and audiences seem to hate Alex Proyas' 2009 film Knowing, it's surprising that it actually did fairly well at the box office. We don't know if that's proof that people actually like it, but it was hated enough that Andy felt it was appropriate to call it a guilty pleasure of his. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we finish up our short and fun Guilty Pleasure Series with Proyas' Knowing. Andy talks about why he loves it so much, and Pete talks about what he likes about it while pointing out all the problems he has with it. We debate the merits of what it's trying to do with what is actually presented to us. We chat about the stunning visual effects work, particularly the plane crash, how they went about creating it and why. We discuss the performances, primarily Nicolas Cage's and Rose Byrne's, and how they work for us (if at all). And we look at the importance of scope in the film — does a payoff need to be sized to its setup? It's a great conversation about a much maligned film. Andy's not sure he won Pete over but it's still one that Andy holds dear. Check it out, tune in, then let us know what you think!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we're doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it's just a nice thing to do. With all the franchises, spin-offs and films based on other mediums these days, it seems rare to find original sci-fi films. That inspired us to do a series of original sci-fi films, and we're starting with one of our favorites. In 1998, Alex Proyas created a fantastic and wholly unique science fiction film, Dark City, that unfortunately bombed at the box office but has since proven to be a cult hit in the after markets. This film, a neo-noir sci-fi with a very mysterious twist, follows a man with amnesia as he tries to uncover who he is, why nothing seems to make sense, and why he woke up at the scene of a murder. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — this week on The Next Reel as we begin our Original Sci-Fi series with Proyas' Dark City. We talk about the nature of the world, a place of puppets and puppetmasters, and what happens when a puppet realizes the world it's in. We discuss the great cast — Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, and Keifer Sutherland in particular — and what they bring to the table. We chat about the stunning production design and effects, as well as the shadowy noir cinematography style. And we cover the script and how it seemed to come out at a time when many stories with this similar theme were being released, like The Matrix and The Thirteenth Floor. It's a great sci-fi and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in!

Josef Rusnak's The Thirteenth Floor, a sci-fi flick from 1999, was mistaken for a "Matrix rip-off" upon release. The film was based on the 1964 Daniel F. Galouye novel Simulacron-3 and was also the basis for Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire.
