In Episode 57 I chat with singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kaoru Ishibashi who performs under the pseudonym Kishi Bashi about  being perfectly woke, always scheming, and fighting over the last bottle of Kombucha.Aside from being a world renowned violinist who has toured internationally with such diverse artists as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, of Montreal, and Alexi Murdoch, he is also the singer and founding member of the New York electronic rock outfit Jupiter One and has garnered praise from the likes of NPR's Bob Boilen who listed him as his favourite new artist of 2012, noting that he created a 'radiant, uplifting soundscape'. In 2019 he released his album 'Omoiyari' in support of his feature  length documentary “Omoiyari: A songfilm by Kishi Bashi” which explores minority identity and the Incarceration of Japanese Americans in WWII. After 4 years in the making and over $100,000 donated by backers across the globe, the film officially premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March 2022 and is due for wider release on Paramount+ and HBO in January 2024.Follow Kishi Bashi  onhttps://www.kishibashi.com/https://www.facebook.com/mrkishibashi/https://twitter.com/Kishi_bashihttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UChgbJryoRLOqHGGW31tYWxAhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/3LVPGE5jPPwtbGslx07YR0https://music.apple.com/us/artist/kishi-bashi/441315443Follow One More Tune onhttps://www.instagram.com/onemoretunepodcasthttps://twitter.com/onemoretunepodFollow The One More Tune Artist Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1ibJ3ZzmuZGqLW4FB6ZAdD?si=8b41c4aad7804c28Songs Used With Artists PermissionPodcast Music by Slim GoodyPodcast Artwork by Peter DoyleProduced by Ian Byrne Support the show

Brett Dennen is a songwriter, painter and summer camp enthusiast. His camp experience was instrumental in developing his musicality. He attended Camp Jack Hazard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where young Brett was enamored with the music his camp counselors would play on guitar around the campfire. He was introduced to Paul Simon, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and John Denver thanks to his counselors and his parents. He really developed as a songwriter in college at UC Santa Cruz. After school, he wove himself into the LA songwriter scene, which in the early 2000's was a haven for musicians like himself, Alexi Murdoch, Damien Rice and Josh Ritter. He developed a large fanbase that remains loyal to this day.Brett talks about running his own summer camp, Camp Dennen, which allows him to create community through nature and art. He shares his experience of writing and thinking about being a dad and how that relates to the reality of fatherhood. And he talks about decidedly not being in the cool crowd and also not caring about it… well not caring about it as much as he used to. Brett's written some of my favorite songs of the 21st century. It was an honor to have him on the pod!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Rosie discusses how a seemingly simple question from one of her boys led her to think that really there was a deeper/bigger question being asked - essentially, “what do I have to do for attention, praise, or love?” In spotting that, and nipping that incorrect conclusion in the bud, it struck on an incorrect conclusion she had carried through her life from childhood, and only recently corrected herself. Listen along as Rosie talks to and comforts her younger, former self (Tiny Psycho Roise) and stays on alert with her own children to try to beat them to their own (incorrect/false) conclusions, so that they don't carry those misunderstandings or "child deduction" into their adult life. Parenting is already a tall order - raising them, teaching them, trying our best to answer their questions, but what about the questions they don't ask? The underlying questions they may not even know they're wondering, and the wrong conclusions they come to trying to put things together. Admittedly, that's a toughie, but let's try to be on the lookout for those, and try to cover things just in case. Just in case they're getting the wrong idea of what they have to do to get love, or to be loved, because what we want more than anything is for them to know that they are loved unconditionally.   - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! -  AskRosieLFP@gmail.com  Brought to you by: Lullabies For Parents Vol 1 on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music Featuring guest appearances: Sufjan Stevens, The Shins, Iron & Wine, Alexi Murdoch, William Fitzsimmons, Audrey Assad, Charity from The Head & The Heart, Kanene from The Lone Bellow, Dawn Landes, Denison Witmer, and many more. Anxiety, depression, panic attacks. Generally dreadful stuff that we understandably try to avoid, do whatever we can to be free of, or just get past, but what if some anxiety was actually there to help you? Stay with me now! Why is it showing up? What if it's trying to get your attention to tell you something needs to change? What if you are coming undone because something new is emerging, because you've outgrown the old you, and the new you is trying to be re-born? What if you have to let some things go to make room for the new you? New found joys? New inspiration? What if that anxiety is actually you being transformed? It's uncomfortable and unknown, but it could be leading you to something new. A fuller you! Your true self. Let's talk about it! - Rosie touches on her own bouts with anxiety and panic attacks, and how something Richard Rohr said helped her unlock and identify some necessary changes she needed to make in her life and in her career. (the book mentioned - Falling Upward) *This episode certainly applies to parents, but is much broader and should be of interest and encouragement to anyone - parent or not* ***Of course there are many causes of, and many ways to deal with anxiety, depression, or panic attacks and this will not apply to all scenarios obviously, but an idea to consider and be curious about and investigate. Particularly entering, or in, the second half of life.** - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! Sean's steel-trap music memory is intact, Paul still doesn't enunciate words correctly, and Mike is leveling up with his recovery like never before. We're also more professional for Season 6, too. Literally! Our new co-host Rikki is a licensed counselor with a specialization in trauma, which puts an entirely different spin on "giving it a whirl."This episode features music by Alexi Murdoch and Toad the Wet Sprocket, not to mention a little Steve Martin action in the mix for good measure.

Being a parent is really hard, and unfortunately it's really easy to get caught up comparing ourselves to other parents - Parents that seem to have it all together. Could be our friends, our own parents, parents we see on social media, even strangers at the store, at school, on a playground, wherever... But beware, it's a trap! Don't fall into that trap! Don't compare! Be yourself! Rosie walks you through how to do that by first identifying who you really are, and always have been. We need to lean into our strengths, and be our true selves, and by extension teach our kids to be their true selves too - wonderfully confident and self assured. Give your kids the unique adventure that only YOU can give them by being you, and let other people have their own by being them. Michael Corcoran - mtheory Today marks a new chapter, or rather, season, of Tough Love.  We’re moving beyond our first season theme of “Origin Stories” and embarking on a theme, “Pivots”.  To kick this off, I invited my old friend and former colleague from Nettwerk Management, Michael Corcoran , to join me.  Michael is now at mtheory, an “artist management services” company of sorts, that amplifies and assists artist managers in marketing and developing their artists. He started his career out as a tour manager, before becoming an artist manager, where he worked with a wide array of various artists, including Jars of Clay, Alexi Murdoch, Alison Krauss, and Rosie Thomas and Landon Pigg, who we co-manged together at our time at Nettwerk.  Michael’s career arc had him circling artist management throughout, and his insights into the business have become more refined now that he’s on the other side of the equation.

Caffeine, Dreams, & Love

It’s difficult to believe I’ve been on the island for 25 days now, in the vacuum of time that is quarantine. I’ve added tennis and biking to my regular activities, along with more regular dinners with my folks. I’m still rising with the sun, for a run, but not every morning. My alcohol intake has decreased, along with my recent writing output. Like many of you I’m taking this one day at a time, doing the best I can to be easy with myself, and practice gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon me. I like to think of today’s guest as another one of those blessings. He’s one of those rare cases where I met someone in the world, prior to experiencing his music. It often happens simultaneously, or virtually, as so many of us discover the music we love. In the time since I first crossed paths with Christian Ohly, I’ve fallen in love with his easy folk meanderings, with guitars whispered beneath vulnerable, and hopeful vocals. I feel great potential emitting from his spirit, most eloquently presented to the world, in his songs. A songwriter first, he is taking this time to work on his guitar chops, while continuing the 9 to 5 supply chain grind. Like me, he loves The Avett Brothers, Drifter Coffee, and our Ferndale community. In 2017, Ohly released their heartfelt six-song self-titled and included an emotionally-charged, introspective package of musical tales focused on relationships, loss and growth. His latest release, University, remains true to form, featuring heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics and longings, inspiring comparisons to Alexi Murdoch and Roo Panes

Aimee Eoff of Soul Happy teaches us how to sit in our emotions and get in touch with our intuition, to trust ourselves and our bodies. She provides quick tips for women with a lot of noise on their minds. Ever find yourself saying “I knew it”? That was your intuition calling! Listen in to learn how to find your own answers within yourself. Aimee has always been intuitive since childhood. But she really didn’t know it. In her 20s she started to realize she was really different and felt there was something wrong with her. She could feel what other people felt, she could hear what other people were feeling. With the advice from a therapist, she took a 4 week meditation class and it completely changed her life. She recognized that her intuition was a gift and helped her to identify what her energy is, as opposed to what other people’s energy is in a room. She is passionate about teaching people to connect with their intuition and their intellect. What is Intuition? We all hold energy. Every word we use has an energy attached to it. We all visualize the word differently, based on experiences we each have had. Aimee created a fun little quiz that is available on her website. It allows you to see what way your intuition speaks to you most dominantly. These are intuitive essences. Check it out…we did! There are 4 that Aimee works with : Feeling from the 2nd chakra- Creative Sensual– when you feel the energy in a room. Clear audience, at the throat/5th Chakra- all about communication and sound. The Vibrational Muse. Where your intuition speaks to you, where you hear your own answers, or you hear other people’s thoughts. Clairvoyance, right behind your eyes, where your 6th chakra is- you can see the energy, but you don’t become it and you don’t become the emotion of it. She calls it the Sovereign Visionary. You can see a picture when someone is telling you something. The top of your head, your 7th Chakra- she calls it Wise Soul. You just know off the top of your head. Without reasoning you just know things to be true. We all have these 4 essences. There are more, but these are the ones Aimee works with. Even just thinking about the way in which we are connected to our essences, and listening to this podcast, will help us get more in touch with the essences. What do you need to do to get better in touch with our intuition? It’s an act of being mindful and aware and curious. When we start getting curious, it brings it out to the surface. When we feel tense or any emotion, stop and ask yourself why are you feeling that tension or emotion? Your body will start answering. Get curious with your senses. Follow the whispers you hear, and the butterflies you feel in your happy. Intuition is not always happy, because it’s about getting real. It’s work to peel the layers and we start to face whether what we believe in is our own belief. We start to discover what is real to us and what it is not real. It will lead to a happy place, but the journey may not be a comfortable journey. How many times have you said “I knew it”? These are the times when we know a feeling that came within us was real. We can learn to read this more and act upon it to make real decisions. When we meditate we are making a statement to yourself into the world, we start to connect inward and learning to determine if what we are feeling is real or if it’s fear or noise. It’s a practice. The more we do it, the more we can get better at it. One quick exercise to recognize if it’s intuition or noise. Ask yourself “does this feel expansive or contractive”? Does it feel like your emotion is making you feel expansive and excited? Or, does it make your body contractive and tense? Tips for women with a lot of noise on their mind Stop and feel your feet on the ground. Recognize that right here right now, your feet are connected to the earth. That will help you get connected to the moment. Creates a dialogue between body and spirit and brings you back in. Breathing. Taking 3 to 10 deep breaths. Feel your breath first and see if it’s in its natural rhythm. Imagine what color your emotion is. You may see it, feel it or hear it. The moment we give it a color, we start to disconnect from the emotion and create separation from it. Our energy systems are like sponges and we absorb a lot of other energy, and we will take on other people’s stresses. The body gets overwhelmed, and when that happens, that is all we can here. The body is like a child, and us as the parent, need to guide it. How to learn to trust your intuition We learn the hard way many times; we ignore it and pay the consequences later. This is when we say “I knew it” and “I should’ve listened to myself”. The more we listen to it and act on it, the louder it gets. This is a relationship we have within ourselves. How do you really understand what your heart desires are? Feel your body emotions. How does your body react when you see something, or hear something. Does it make you feel expansive or contractive? Try a fun exercise: Make a vision board on Pinterest with images of what you want in the next five years or whatever an occasion is. Those images that make you feel happy…that’s what you should be doing. Aimee’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Own Journey Meditation Healthy eating Physical movement    CELEBRATING MEN, SATISFYING WOMEN! It’s been almost two years since I produced an episode of this goofy little podcast featuring the thoughts and words of a man I admire a great deal: Dr. George Sheehan.  There’s no specific reason for that…episode 258 titled “Dr. George Sheehan: Seeing” was my reading of the final chapter of his book “Running and Being – The Total Experience”, probably his best known work. Cardiologist, Philosopher, author and record setting marathoner, Dr. George Sheehan was diagnosed, in 1986, with inoperable prostate cancer.  By the time it was discovered, it had already spread to his bones.  He fought with the disease for seven years, living each day to it’s top.  His last book “Going the Distance: One Man’s Journey to the end of his life” was all about the experience of dying from the perspective of a runner…or better put, someone like us who sees value in our life and accepts pain, sweat and exhaustion as a way to live well. “Going the Distance” was published shortly after his death. Today I’m going to read for you a chapter from this book titled “Facing the Future”.  We seem to talk about death quite a bit on this podcast, which means that at least during your listening of such episodes as Fdip286 “The Rationality of Fear and Road Races”, you and I are exploring the idea of death.  I maintain that death is not something that we can rationally fear: and Dr. Sheehen agrees. You can find a copy of “Going the Distance” on Amazon.com I’ll have the link in the show notes. I really feel that this chapter is one that you should be listening to when you’re out on the road getting your miles in, if possible.  I understand that some of you can’t do that, but if you can…I want to urge you to hold off on listening further until you’re lacing up your shoes and opening up your own squeaky front door.   This is a chapter about pain and the agonizing pursuit of the self.  It’s a deeply personal chapter that reveals a lot of the inner philosophy that Dr. Sheehan held dear.  He talks about religion, his perception of Christ, and about his life, beyond death, facing the future.
