Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, says that the real story in cryptocurrency in 2024 has not been the massive gains in Bitcoin -- which is up about 120 percent year-to-date -- but the way the business has matured, adding crypto ETFs from some of Wall Street's biggest firms. Coupled with the new administration, which is crypto-friendly, it makes Hougan more positive about his outlook for the future, which he says includes plenty of room for crypto to run higher in 2025. John Cole Scott, president of Closed-End Fund Advisors, digs into his mountain of data to divine the stories he anticipates to be central to the closed-end fund landscape in the new year, and also delivers the names of five funds that he thinks are poised for breakout performances. Plus, financial adviser Patti Brennan helps answer the big question most investors want to know for the new year and beyond, as she discusses her new book, “Am I Going to Be Okay? Timely Intelligence, Actionable Ideas, Answers to the Questions that Really Matter.”
In this episode of The Patti Brennan Show, guest host Carrie Brennan sits down with her mother, Patti Brennan, for a heartfelt conversation about Patti's remarkable journey. From earning a nursing degree at Georgetown University and working in the ICU at Lankenau Hospital to founding Key Financial Inc. in 1990, Patti shares how she discovered her true passion for financial planning and her desire to help others. She also discusses her upcoming book, Am I Going to Be Okay?, set to be published on November 26, 2024. Don't miss out on this episode of The Patti Brennan Show!

*TRIGGER WARNING: Episode discusses themes of sexual abuse, assault and rape*This is part I of a 2-episode series on the topic of sexual abuse, assault and rape.In this episode, we tackle some relevant definitions and statistics, discuss some reasons why survivors do not disclose their sexual abuse experiences, and highlight some of the psychological and emotional repercussions of sexual abuse. We also cover some facts and myths with regards to unwanted sexual experiences, particularly those relating to male sexual abuse. Why do many survivors of sexual abuse experiences keep such incidents to themselves and prefer secrecy? Why is there more shame surrounding male sexual abuse than female sexual abuse? Do childhood sexual abuse experiences contribute to the development of same-sex attractions? Is there a chance for survivors of sexual abuse to become perpetrators themselves? Episode 7. Hey everyone! Before we dive in to this great episode, did you hear yet about my Free 5-Day Body Respect Challenge?! It's all about how to dig DEEP on your values and tie them directly to your health behaviors. It brings together everything we talk about on this podcast and goes over the HOW of bringing it all together. Grab your spot today! Doors open Saturday Feb 27th! Do You Worry about "Messing Up" your Kid's Relationship with Food? Do you worry that your comments or your struggles with your weight or body image are somehow going to get transferred to your kids? Do you stress that you've already "messed up" your kid's relationship with food and it's beyond repair? Are you stressing about accommodating your children's picky eating and feel that you need to become a short-order cook to get everyone fed? Do you feel frustrated that you want or feel the need to make different meals for different family members due to different health concerns? If so, you are in the right place. Today's post is for you if you are a parent of any age kid, or have kids in your life you care about. Even if your kids are adults, I promise it isn't too late. Stay tuned for what you can do to prevent difficulties or remedy the situation whether your "kid" is 2, or 62. Body Image: Let's Take a Look at the Numbers Let's check out a few stats about body image to see where we are at: Males 25% of male children and adolescents were concerned about muscularity and leanness and expressed a desire for more toned and defined muscles (Calzo et al., 2015)For adult men in the US, 9% reported frequent body checking and 5% reported body image avoidance (Striegel-Moore et al., 2009). Females Of 1000 adult women in Switzerland (ages 30-74), 70% expressed a desire to be thinner (Allaz et al., 1998).50% of girls in the US are unhappy with their body; by 17 years, this number is nearly 80% (Kearney-Cooke et al., 2015). This is clearly a major issue. This isn't just on the individual families to change this. We need to change at a societal level in terms of how we think about and pursue health. However, as a family unit we have opportunities to improve how we communicate with our loved ones. If nothing else, this can set an example for the world at large. Am I Going to Say Something to Negatively Impact My Kid? Frankly the answer is probably. But don't despair. Even if you make a harmful comment, it's never to late to remedy. You are an imperfect human and you are never going to it get it right 100% of the time. I've worked with many adults and have heard countless stories about how comments from their parents have negatively influenced their relationship with food. I've heard stories from clients who are in their 60s and 70s tell of how their parents finally owned their mistakes from childhood or parenting them as an adult, and how incredibly helpful and meaningful that conversation was. Your Anxiety about Your Kiddos is a Major Concern Here Parental anxiety and worry is REAL. And it isn't going away. But we have to be aware of it and keep it in check, in many areas but particularly when it comes to their health. The absolute hardest thing do to as a parent is to watch your children be in pain and to struggle. And yet, we have to allow them space to do so so that they can learn and develop confidence. I know you want your kids to eat well and be as healthy as possible. You want to help them avoid significant weight gain, as you are well aware that being in a larger body in our society is harder. You know that if they gain weight, not only it is harder to lose it (particularly when it's more than 20-30 lbs or so), but that they are also much more likely to experience significant bias and may have a harder time in social relationships or finding a job due to their weight. Your Suggestions about "Health" Are Probably Making Things Worse You can have your anxiety,

Welcome to Black Cancer. I'm creator and host, Jodi-Ann Burey. And this episode, well, I'm kinda the guest too? A little yes and no. Today's guest is Dr. Virtaj Singh, M.D. He's my physiatrist, who also has a sub specialty in pain. After two years in and out of doctor's offices, I found myself in his, and a year later, he's the one who ordered the MRI that found the tumor in my spine. This is the first episode of Black Cancer that's about my own story. It's also the first episode that does a really deep dive on a diagnosis journey. Mine. And I hope this can be an offering that finding a care provider that provides, well… care… is possible. Normally, when I title each episode, I use an illustrative phrase from one of our guests. But this time, the title, “Am I Going to Die Today?” came from me. In editing this episode, I realized how many times I looked to Dr. Singh to answer that question. I realized how many times I had to sincerely ask myself that question. Is the tumor going to kill me? Is the surgery going to kill me? Is this depression going to cause me to kill myself? Are the cops, when encountering a women crying about all these questions swarming her head, going to kill me first? Fearing for our bodies and our right to live seems to be the condition of Black life. And I am tired. How Dr. Singh has and continues to show up for me gives my mind a place to rest. He's someone I can trust. Who - as you will see - says things straight. And who has my back. Get it? Spine joke. Here's an overview of our conversation: How racism might have impacted Jodi-Ann's path to diagnosis (9:01) What happened when Jodi-Ann stopped going to Dr. Singh's clinic (24:43) How the healthcare industry needs to confront racism systemically (1:18:31) More about this episode: What's a physiatrist? DEVOTIONAL VIDEO MESSAGE SUMMARY: Be Strong & Courageous (Commencement -- Reformed Episcopal Seminary; Oreland, PA) Courage is acting and speaking even though you are afraid. If you follow God’s call and seek His will to live and act in His Word, there is no reason to be overcome by fear because: “your God is with you wherever you go”. After God’s grace through Jesus, God is in you through His gift to you of the Holy Spirit. You get strong by exercising the “muscles” of your faith and your commitment to God’s will and His word – often pushing your “commitment to God” beyond levels you thought possible. In Joshua 1:9, God commands you to be strong and courageous because He is with you: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”. When you obey God’s commands, He steps into your life with support for you to achieve His command. You have been equipped, as God told Jeremiah in Jeremiah 29:11-12, for God’s purposes in your life: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.". Spiritual strength comes to you from having God with you and in you. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will trust in the Lord with all my heart. I will trust in the Lord with all of my heart and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways I will seek to know Him, and He will make my pathways straight. (From Proverbs 3:5f). MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus is the firstborn of all creation; and in Him, all the fullness of Deity {God}lives in bodily form. This position, of Jesus’ Deity, is quite different from the teachings of Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, the New Age, or the Universalist. These statements, from Paul to the Colossians in Colossians 1:15, solidifies Jesus’ Deity: “He {Jesus} is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation." form the crux of Christianity. In Jesus, God fully dwells. Again, in Colossians 2:9-10, Paul reminds us of Jesus’ ultimate Deity: “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.". God expects your faith and belief in Jesus’ Deity in return for God’s forgiveness that results from Jesus’ sacrificial Crucifixion, Resurrection, and God’s Grace. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Heartlessness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit’s fruit of Kindness. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Colossians 2:9-10; Proverbs 8:27; John 1:1-5; Psalms 3:1-8. MESSAGE SUMMARY: The purpose of Jesus’ death on the cross was to sacrifice Himself to be your sacrifice for your sins. God’s Law requires a blood sacrifice for your sins which you could not do for yourself. Otherwise, you would die, eternally, after your earthly death for your sins without Jesus’ sacrifice for you. In Romans 5:18-21, Paul succinctly explains Jesus’ unique role, that only Jesus could play, in our Justification and Salvation – a role that begins with God’s Grace: “Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.". Jesus’ blood made His death, which He experienced for you, provide restitution; make atonement; and pay the death penalty for your sins. Someone must pay for your sins – either you must pay, or Jesus has paid. If you pay for your sins, it means your eternal condemnation and alienation from God, without your eternal life. Jesus paid for your sins, and His death and Resurrection means personal forgiveness and a personal relationship with God during your earthly life and your eternal life and an eternal relationship with God. Jesus death and Resurrection were for the forgiveness of your sins and all sins; for all people that chose God’s Grace through Jesus; and for all time. MESSAGE SUMMARY: We just celebrated the anniversary of America’s Independence, and “I come this day with a heavy heart for our nation; for our people; for our children; for our grandchildren; and people of faith.”. Over the past months, we have seen an unprecedented removal of ethical, moral, and spiritual foundations. These foundations have allowed this country, in the past, to be blessed by God; to be civil; to be protected; and to be successful as a nation. In the times of Jeremiah, the nations of Israel and Judah were having their problems. The people were neglecting God; abandoning God’s commandments; and doing things God considered abominable – in summary, Jeremiah’s people had no Fear of God. Given this situation, God says, in Jeremiah 5:29, “’Shall I not punish them for these things?’ declares the LORD, ‘and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?’”. Given these situations in Scripture as a comparative context, we are now, like in the times of Jeremiah, pushing God’s patience. Therefore, we cannot expect for things to continue to go well. God’s laws are meant for blessing and protecting us, and our actions now are mocking God. Paul instructs us, in Galatians 6:7, that God cannot be mocked: “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”. Great Britain declared that February 21, 1781 would be a day of prayer and fasting. On this day, the Anglican pastor John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace, preached a sermon on Jeremiah 5:29. Several comments from Newton’s sermon enlighten us on God and the affairs of nations. Since we have had a public covenant with God, do you thank that God will not take notice of our public divorce from Him through our actions and the turning of our backs on Him? God tells us, in 2 Chronicles 7:14, that “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.". Following God’s command for prayer when a nation has gone away from his blessings, Paul’s instructions to Timothy, in 1 Timothy 2:1-6, are valid for everybody today as we now live in a “post-Christian culture”: 1) we should remain diligent in our prayers, and our prayers should concern everyone, including all those in authority (e.g., presidents, cabinet members, legislators, governors, mayors, judges); 2) our hearts should be concerned for everyone’s Salvation; and 3) our message (i.e. there is one mediator between God and mankind – Jesus the Christ) should concern everyone Nations come and go; civilizations come and go; and institutions come and go; but God and His Word abide forever. Therefore, we all should throw ourselves on the mercy of God because it is only by God’s mercy that His hand will be stayed. Remember, justice is getting what we deserve, but mercy is not getting what we deserve. Are we praying; are our churches houses of prayer, are we repenting for ourselves and our nation; and are we praying for a spiritual awakening in our nation and in the world, that will turn this nation and world back to God, before there is no more mercy? As in Isaiah 6:8, “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’” -- Do something in the name of Jesus the Christ as He leads you; and if not you the who? TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will proclaim Him. (Philippians 1:15f). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). MESSAGE SUMMARY: As Christians and Citizens of Heaven, we know that Jesus is coming back -- either to greet us when we die or before we die at His Second Coming. For most of us, however, our vision of Heaven is clouded by looking backwards; therefore, the return of Jesus does not have any power in our life. Paul reinforces the return of the Lord of Heaven in Philippians 1:6: “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.". When Jesus returns, we will put on our spiritual bodies, as promised. As Jesus tells us in Matthew 4:17: “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”. Remember the moment you become a follower of Jesus, you have immediate Eternal Life; and you become a Citizen of Heaven. Jesus tells us, in John 5:24, that His followers have Eternal Life and are Citizens of Heaven here on earth living their earthly lives: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.". TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will proclaim Him. (Philippians 1:15f). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): 1 Peter 1:1-18; 1 Corinthians 11:23-27; Luke 22:20; Psalms 1:1-6. MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus tells you about the certainty of your Judgment in John 5:25,29: “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live . . . and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.". Since Judgment is coming, are you doing all you can to keep your relationship with the Lord growing? Given certain Judgment for all, a primary purpose of the Church is to lead people into a growing relationship with the Lord. You must be constantly growing and nurturing your faith in Jesus. There is a day when we will all be judged by the Lord – do not you think you can wait until the last minute to have a real relationship with Jesus. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Self-Centeredness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit’s fruit of Love. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). DEVOTIONAL VIDEO MESSAGE SUMMARY: The Upper Room Part 3: The Promise of Belief (St. Thomas Anglican Church, Athens GA) “Doubt” does not constrain people from believing and following Jesus. Rather, it is their “resistance to giving up their sins” that constrains their belief and acceptance of Jesus as THE Lord of their life. Jesus becomes the “Lord of your life” when you have a personal relationship with Jesus, and He becomes the focal point and center of your decisions and faith. A primary component of Jesus teaching methodology was to ask questions. Most questions asked, regarding Christianity, were directly answerable. Important questions were asked by Jesus in His several appearances after His Resurrection from His Crucifixion and death. The first reference, in John 20, addresses Jesus’ appearance to His Apostilles; and the Apostille Thomas was not present. Therefore, when Thomas was told of Jesus’ appearance, Thomas said that he would not believe in Jesus’ Resurrection until he could see and feel Jesus’ wounds from the Crucifixion. Jesus, knowing Thomas’ disbelief without physical evidence of His Resurrection, asked Thomas to feel His wounds. Afterwards, Jesus asked Thomas the implied question regarding Thomas’ “belief”, and Thomas answered with an answer that has resonated throughout the centuries: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:24-29): “Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.’ Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”. Jesus went on to affirm Thomas’ belief in the face of compelling physical evidence, but Jesus acknowledged the power of the belief and faith by those of us who follow Him, like you through your faith, without physical evidence and certainty. So, for you who does not have the physical evidence of Jesus’ death and Resurrection, Paul tells you, in Romans 10:17, that: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”. Do you believe, and is Jesus the Lord of your life? TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Anger. Rather, I will abide in the Lord’s Forgiveness. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). MESSAGE SUMMARY: Paul points out to us, in Romans1:18, that God is not a disinterested bystander in either our lives or the life of our country: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.". From the end of WWI, in 1918, through the middle of the 1930s, Hitler and the National Socialist Party coopted the Christian Churches in Germany as the National Socialists rose to power politically, thereby, reducing Germany to only one state-supported religion. Also, the National Socialists coopted all of Germany’s political parties to reduce Germany to a one-party country. Is the Christian Church, here in the US, abdicating its role, as the Christian Church did in Germany, by not speaking with a voice that is heard against the changing culture? As followers of Jesus, we and our churches need to wake up to the cultural changes that are opposed to Jesus’ teachings and the Bible. The US was created, by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, to be a “country of laws”; and the founding legal context for these laws was the Ten Commandments of God. However, our current and evolving culture, and its related value system, is opposed to the Ten Commandments of God. As we adhere to the new culture and its values, we are in opposition to God and the basic tenants of Christianity. Therefore, our departure from God positions us for the Wrath of God as posited in Romans 1:18. God’s Wrath may well take the form of God turning us over to our lusts, desires and the outcomes of this changed culture – as we walk away from God, He may walk away from us. It is not too late for the US to wake up! As God told Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.". God has instructed us that He will forgive us if we: 1) humble ourselves: 2) seek Him, not our culture; 3) turn from wicked ways; and 4) pray. Will America wake up and follow God’s instructions? TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD’S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Romans1:18; 2 Chronicles 7:14. DEVOTIONAL VIDEO MESSAGE SUMMARY: Am I Going To Heaven? (Christ Anglican Church; Cashiers, NC) If you follow Jesus in faith and confession, you can we be sure that you are in a “right relationship” with God because Jesus is your life’s Lord. Therefore, how can you, as a follower of Jesus in a “right relationship” with God, be sure that you are “saved”? As a follower of Jesus and based on Scripture, the answer is a “resounding YES, you can be sure that you are saved”! As followers of Jesus, God has given you assurances of your Salvation in three different ways: 1) the witness of Scripture through the documentation of the work of Christ on the cross from God’s Grace as a means of Eternal Life; 2) the witness of the Holy Spirit which, again, is God’s gift to those who follow Jesus in faith and confession; and 3) the witness of the Holy Sacraments of your faith (i.e. Holy Communion, Baptism) that assure us of God’s work in our lives. Because of your personal relationship with God, the relationship that you have resulting from following Jesus, you can say to God: “you died for My sins”. Your personal relationship with God should provide assurance of your Salvation. In the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, you are given the Comfortable Words of Paul in 1 Timothy 1:15: “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.". Also, you have the assurance, again from Scripture, in 1 John 5:11-13: “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.". Yes, as a follower of Jesus, you have eternal Life! The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Coronavirus (or COVID-19) is everywhere on the news, and everyone's talking about it. The statistics and status of outbreaks are changing rapidly, and there is uncertainty around the virus. I can't answer all of the questions surrounding this issue…(no one can at this point) but I hope this episode will help you understand a little bit more about how the human brain responds to pandemics. I'm going to talk about how the way our brains work affects our reactions in situations like this. We'll start with an example of framing. What do you think of when you hear a “state of emergency” is declared? I live in Washington where we had the first coronavirus death and the first state of emergency declared in the US. California is the second state to have declared a state of emergency. “State of emergency” is a name that doesn’t help contain public fear. I understand why it's called this and why it's important to declare it…but…talk about a framing issue. I also talk about the focusing illusion and how focusing on something makes it seem more significant. I'll cover several other concepts that apply to what goes through our minds in times of uncertainty, danger, fear, and panic. I'll also cover opportunities to make the most of things and lots and lots of informative links to help you educate yourself about the current situation. It is important to note that the information about coronavirus specifically is changing rapidly – what I put in my notes and record today will not be accurate by the time this goes live on March 13 and after. Also, there is no judgment or criticism of choices any person or country or entity has made. The intention of this episode is to explain how our brains are wired to work during times of uncertainty, like the coronavirus pandemic. Show Notes: [02:54] I've been reading a lot about coronavirus lately, and it's a big deal. I live in Washington state where we had the first recorded coronavirus death in the US. [03:32] Declaring a state of emergency is definitely a framing issue. When the brain hears this, it doesn't take it lightly. It wonders what the emergency means and creates more panic than is helpful. [03:58] The human brain has a lot of capacity to process information: when given something new and unknown it will run rampant. [04:15] Our brains will over analyze and freak out a little bit. Focusing on something will make it feel more important or significant. This is the focusing illusion. [04:36] Our counterfactual and prefactual thinking will also ramp up and go into overdrive. [04:59] A lack of control is a breeding ground for fear and a brain bonanza. [05:19] New or unknown things are scary, because we can't categorize them using the concept of relativity. We have nothing to compare it to. [06:17] Probability neglect is where we drastically overestimate our own personal risk in a situation. [07:21] We also have a zero risk bias where we would rather eliminate all the risk we can. [08:37] Our inability to properly understand probabilities and aversion to risk AND need for control AND penchant for the status quo all combine in the worst possible way when we are confronted with an unknown, highly contagious disease. [09:05] Availability bias is when our brains believe what we hear most often to be true. [10:47] I want to make sure everyone knows that I know we are talking about real humans – each of those numbers represents a person: mother, father, sister, brother, friend. I do not take this lightly as I share the details throughout the episode. [13:20] Why don't we hear about (or get as scared by) the flu-related deaths that happen every year? It's because we've all had the flu, and it's a known entity. [14:02] Our availability bias says that flu is annoying, but it's not that big of a deal. [14:37] The recommendations to stop the threat of coronavirus are the exact same recommendations to stop influenza. [15:18] Availability bias is a huge culprit in the reaction to the coronavirus. The focus is on the scary stuff. [16:32] The unknown variables of the coronavirus are what make it really scary to the brain. [17:47] We need to maintain these better habits that will keep us healthier and happier well into the future. [18:02] Why is it so difficult to change habits? We are used to habits. We have subconscious rules stuck in our brain. [20:30] Changing habits takes diligence at the beginning, and continued effort to maintain. Conscious processing can only do so much work at the same time. [21:44] Before you react, stop and ask if your behavior is rational or if you need this. Take a moment to breathe and focus. [22:36] One other problem we have when it comes to changing behavior, is our brain’s natural risk thermostat. Essentially, when we do one thing good, we feel justified slacking on something else. [23:52] If we can all do only one thing well to fight the spread of viruses, because that one thing has a bunch of hidden steps, we should be focusing on the one thing that is proven to be most effective. [24:20] No one wants to be diagnosed with coronavirus. The mentality of staying home and not getting tested for fear of what others will think is a combination of herding and an ostrich or head in the sand type of response. [26:11] If people don't self-quarantine or get tested when they get sick, there will be more outbreaks. It's our brains natural reaction to avoid risk, but it's best to get tested. [27:47] One person making a rash and extreme decision can cause a huge chain reaction that is difficult to stop. [30:13] When we feel a lack of control, of uncertainty, like we do when a novel virus is spreading around the world, we get scared and the brain looks for something to do and control. [31:29] This is an opportunity to revisit the way you have always done things. [32:59] What can you be doing today, while people aren’t traveling and the status quo is already disrupted, to look at your offering and find opportunities to make your company better? MESSAGE SUMMARY: From the Gospel of Luke (12:49-56): “Jesus the Narrow Door” Introduction from “Jesus the Divider”: While Jesus does bring us “Peace”, Jesus tells us that His ways are not always our ways; and Jesus does not always bring us “Peace”. In the world, we have tribulation; but Jesus has overcome the world. In Jesus, we do have “Peace”; but when we do stand with and for Jesus, “division” and conflict are created. In this passage from Luke 12, Jesus wants His followers to know that following Him will have a cost in terms of conflict and worldly tribulation. Many in and of the world will not tolerate our communication of the Gospel. Jesus is not saying that “division” is good. Rather, Jesus, in John 17:22-23, expresses His desire, to the Father, for His followers to all be at one with Him and the Father. However, Jesus is warning us that “division” is inevitable because we are human and sinners. Jesus ends His message to those assembled, in Luke 12:54-56, with: “He also said to the crowds, ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?’". In this passage, Jesus was pointing toward His purpose on earth and the cross; but no one understood His message at the time period of His teaching in Luke – they could not read God’s signs. Do we see and follow God’s signs, or do we miss them and become party to creating “divisions”? Today’s Message -- Jesus the Narrow Door: In our Gospel focus from Luke 13:22-30, Jesus was pointing His earthly ministry toward Jerusalem, the Cross, Resurrection, and His Ascension. Jesus was asked, in Luke 13:23-25, a pivotal question; and He responded: “And someone said to him, ‘Lord, will those who are saved be few?’ And he said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’”". It’s not that Jesus doesn’t want all to be saved, it’s just that the “gate”, to our Salvation, is “narrow” and difficult to enter. As Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 2:3-4, that Jesus wants all people to be saved: “This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.". However, all people will not be saved because some will not come to Jesus – they don’t want to be saved. In Luke 13:26-30, those rejected by the master of the house argue for admission: “” Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I tell you; I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”". Jesus is the “narrow door” and the “gate” by which we enter the Kingdom of God and our Salvation. Jesus Himself tells us in John 10:9-10: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”. We have been given the job, by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20, to help others find the “narrow door”. As believers in the Gospel and followers of Jesus, we are invited, in Revelation 19:9-10, to the “Marriage Super of the Lamb”: ““And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, ‘These are the true words of God.’ Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.’ For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”". Is your focus on Jesus, the ”Narrow Door”, that is the only way to the Kingdom of God and your Eternal Life? Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
