The Sovereign God confronted the heads of old Jerusalem for being motivated by personal gain, showing that restoration would come through Jesus who is the only head motivated to give Himself for others. Which heads? Judges, prophets, rulers.1. Bad judges gained from miscarriages of justice for personal advantage; meanwhile The Good Judge knows justice, loves good and hates evil. (v.1-4)2. False prophets gained from warping their message to fit what people would pay to hear; meanwhile Micah was filled with power, the Spirit, justice and might to keep on declaring both sin and salvation. (v.5-8)3. Bad city rulers gained from taking bribes for the ruin of their city; meanwhile The Sovereign Ruler makes Jerusalem a heap of ruins – then rebuilds it and brings purified exiles home. (v.9-12)How are we to think about bad rulers in the land?Who says 'woe to you,' and to whom? Luke 11:37-52Who is filled with the Spirit? The ministry of cooperative governance & traditional affairs (Cogta) has called for public comment on the municipal structures' amendment bill which seeks to give guidelines on how municipalities are governed. The Bill was introduced to deal with the instability and dysfunction that has been associated with local coalitions, and specifically in several metros. The bill proposes changing municipalities with a mayoral executive system, in which no party obtained a majority of seats, to a collective executive system within a prescribed period and to provide for the election or removal from office of municipal office-bearers to be by a show of hands, among others. Meanwhile, Non-governmental organisation My Vote Counts agrees that there is a need for some legislation to provide a structure in which coalition governments can operate more effectively but says the process must not be used as an opportunity by dominant political parties to cement their power at the expense of voters... for more on this Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Nkosikhulule Nyembezi , Policy Analyst and Chairperson of the Election Monitoring Network

Are you misusing God's power, thus missing his power? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are reading 1 Samuel 4. I've titled this chapter "Misusing Divine Power." Today, I am reading verse 22, which states: And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.” — 1 Samuel 4:22 This verse is the shocking moment in this chapter. It is a statement of national stupidity. Israel made foolish choices, thinking they could harness God's power for personal means, which led to the capture of the ark of God. For those unfamiliar, the ark was a sacred chest containing the Ten Commandments that rested in the Temple, symbolizing God's presence and power. Humanity has long been intrigued by God's power. Even if we don't fully comprehend the intricacies of religion, we know that God, by nature, is considered all-powerful. The idea that God's power could somehow be harnessed for our benefit is undeniably attractive. The thought of this takes me back to those old classic Indiana Jones movies, like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "The Last Crusade" where notorious explorers are allured by the proposition that the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail hold power that one could harness for personal pleasure and means. For many, God's power is exactly what draws them to God. Consider the businessman burdened by anxieties and challenges. In desperation, he comes to God, praying that God's power will give him success or prevent the success of his competitors. If God's power can do that, the businessman sees value in God. Or consider the unbeliever who is terminally ill. Even though they have lived a prayerless life, their illness brings them to one of those "Hail Mary Prayers" for God's healing power. If God can offer that, then they see some value in God. The applications of this twisted understanding of God's power are endless. But this is exactly what the followers of God in Israel attempt to do in 1 Samuel 4. Believers attempt to harness the power of the ark of God for their own personal means, resulting in a mass casualty event of proportions that is catastrophic to the people of Israel. And that is what the woman in this text has learned. Her husband (Phinehas), brother-in-law (Hophni), and father-in-law (Eli) are all dead because they misunderstood and misused the power of God. This entire chapter warns everyone about the misuse of God's power for personal pleasure. Harnessing God's power even in our fragilities may be alluring, but it's fatal. We might even try to camouflage our attempt to harness our power behind a religious front, but still, this is fatally wrong. With that, here are the six topics we will address in this chapter: God's Power Is Not Our Pleasure. God's Promises Are Powerfully Fulfilled. Personal Sin Becomes A National Crisis. God's Power Is Not Your Good Luck Charm. God's Power Reveals Godless Corruption. God's Judgement is Painful for Everyone. So get ready for a powerful chapter where we discover the God of all power. #MisusingDivinePower, #HarnessingGodsPower, #BiblicalWarnings Ask This: How do you discern between seeking God's power for personal gain versus aligning yourself with His will and purposes? In what areas of your life do you find yourself tempted to misuse or manipulate God's power for your own desires, and how can you realign your perspective to honor His sovereignty and wisdom? Do This: Don't misuse God's power. Pray This: Lord, help me surrender my desires for personal gain and align my heart with Your will, recognizing Your sovereignty over all things. Grant me wisdom to use Your power in accordance with Your purposes so that I may honor You in all aspects of my life. Amen. Play This: In Christ Alone.

Joining host Joseph Backholm to discuss members and their personal stocks is FRC Action's Matt Carpenter. Recently, two members of Congress proposed a policy amendment that would ban congress members from owning or trading individual stocks. Due to their influential and powerful positions, congressmen and women can be exposed to crucial information that would help them pad their own financial portfolios. Looking at Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and other financial disclosure forms Matt and Joseph ask the question - What are the motives for individuals pursuing congressional and senate seats? The public good or personal gain? Resources Insider Trading? Congressional Democrats Crush the S&P 500 Read The Washington Stand, featuring news and commentary from a biblical worldview. Someone on YouTube asked me to clarify my thoughts on using magic for personal gain. I hadn't done so in that particular video so here I am! The tldr; version of my answer is yes, you can use magic for personal gain. There is no hard and fast rule in witchcraft that says you can't use magic to get things you want or need. Listen in to hear my reasons, my thoughts on where this idea comes from, and how I feel that it is harmful to certain communities. #990: How to be selfless for personal gain sounds like click bait, which is why we take on this topic that Tom Ziglar lists as the 2nd virtue in his book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times. I wanted to confront this issue as I feel we can miss the value of it in our lives because the concept is a bit preposterous. The Bible talks about dying to self. Does anyone feel they have accomplished this? When something feels unreachable we tend to just abandon it. Selfless is the opposite of selfish, but it doesn't mean it's without self interest. If I have food and you don't and I keep mine for myself, that's pure selfishness. If I give some or even all of my food to you we'd say this is selfless. But look at the word. Selfless is less self. Not zero self. Giving my food to you makes me feel good about myself. I still get benefit. Maybe even more. And more often than not our selfless acts get noticed and what goes around comes around. The point is understanding how being selfless serves others, and us. And it's ok that you aren't in fact totally dead to yourself. If you read the Bible contextually you'll see testimony that dying to self may speak more to dying to your lower, base, selfish self, and being born again to your higher, best self. There is still a self there and that is ok. This podcast is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted name in personal and professional development. Martus Mazur and El-Aurians. They're known as listeners, but not all El-Aurians are as adept at doing so as Guinan, nor are their intentions as noble. We found this out in the second-season Deep Space Nine episode “Rivals," when a refugee from the El-Aurian system named Martus Mazur came aboard the station and caused all sorts of trouble for the crew. This visit also marked a first for Star Trek canon. Despite Guinan having appeared in 29 episodes of the The Next Generation, she was never named as being an El-Aurian. That happened in the film Generations, which premiered almost 11 months after “Rivals.” In this episode of The Orb, with Guinan having returned in Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing revisit the only appearance of El-Aurians on DS9 and discuss how the original idea for the story would have connected to Guinan by making Martus her wayward son. We talk about how the story's impact and plot changed when Whoopi Goldberg was unable to make an appearance, and explore the concept of El-Aurians in general, how the three we've spent time with (counting Tolian Soran) use their skills as listeners, and imagine how the species could be used for an epic, galaxy-ending threat in modern Star Trek.
