Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, says that the real story in cryptocurrency in 2024 has not been the massive gains in Bitcoin -- which is up about 120 percent year-to-date -- but the way the business has matured, adding crypto ETFs from some of Wall Street's biggest firms. Coupled with the new administration, which is crypto-friendly, it makes Hougan more positive about his outlook for the future, which he says includes plenty of room for crypto to run higher in 2025. John Cole Scott, president of Closed-End Fund Advisors, digs into his mountain of data to divine the stories he anticipates to be central to the closed-end fund landscape in the new year, and also delivers the names of five funds that he thinks are poised for breakout performances. Plus, financial adviser Patti Brennan helps answer the big question most investors want to know for the new year and beyond, as she discusses her new book, “Am I Going to Be Okay? Timely Intelligence, Actionable Ideas, Answers to the Questions that Really Matter.”

Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise Asset Management forecast hinges on the potential establishment of a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR). Addressing this, Hougan remarked, “If we do get a Bitcoin strategic reserve where the government is buying Bitcoin, as proposed in Senator Lummis' bill for the government to purchase a million Bitcoin, $200,000 Bitcoin is going to be looking quaint. You're going to be looking at three four $500,000 Bitcoin. It's just too big a story because governments all around the world would have to do it.” Learn more about your ad choices. A pro-crypto president. A pro-crypto Congress. A pro-crypto SEC. That's what the cryptocurrency industry will soon benefit from in this “Gamechanger” moment, according to Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise Asset Management. That, in turn, has enormous implications for investors in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which Matt and I explore in this week's MoneyShow MoneyMasters Podcast. Our chat begins with a primer on Matt's background and an overview of Bitwise, one of the largest crypto-focused investment management firms, with $11 billion in client assets across ETFs, funds, staking services, and active strategies. Next, we discuss the seismic shift in the industry's future growth potential and institutional acceptance driven by the election results, as well as the wildly successful roll out of Bitcoin (and other) ETFs and what it means for investors and traders. The conversation then pivots to sector innovations and developments fueled by cryptocurrencies, including those that are “very serious and very fun.” They include the growth in election prediction markets that garnered so much attention this fall...the use of crypto-enabled stablecoins for B2B payments in developing markets…and the use of blockchain technology to validate ownership and transfer of video game perks and upgrades. We also cover how Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can and should be used in investor portfolios, how Bitcoin measures up against gold, and what new investors in the asset class need to keep in mind. Finally, Matt previews what he'll cover at the 2024 MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Las Vegas, scheduled for Feb. 17-19 at the Paris Las Vegas. Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management -- the nation's largest crypto index fund manager -- says that cryptocurrency has historically moved in four-year cycles, with a big move upwards followed by a big reset. Last year, when crypto suffered losses bigger than the down market, was the setback; now crypto assets are in the recovery phase -- which he says most investors aren't paying attention to -- setting up "a significant and sustained bull run in crypto." Also on the show, Brendan Ahern, chief investment officer, KraneShares -- the editor of ChinaLastNight.com -- says that a four-year losing streak in China has positioned the market there as a global value play, noting that he thinks many investors are lost in the headlines over trade concerns and focusing portfolios on the "very crowded trade" of U.S. markets rather than eyeing the potential for an economic turnaround/comeback in China. In the Market Call, portfolio manager Brian Mulberry of Zacks Investment Management, talks about the firm's earnings-consistency purview in picking stocks.

The Bitcoin price has made a V-shape recovery from $3,600, following a capitulation-esque fall on March 12. Since then, the crypto market has recovered rapidly, similar to gold in previous crises, cryptocurrencies could perform strongly in the medium to long-term. As CryptoSlate previously reported, gold demonstrated a close correlation with stocks in the early days of past financial crises. As time passed, gold broke out of the correlation, ultimately outperforming stocks. Bitwise Global Head of Research Matt Hougan said in a letter to investors that crypto may see a similar pattern as gold, which makes the medium to long-term trend of the asset class highly optimistic. Real demand, real buyers in crypto In 2008, after the subprime mortgage crisis swept across the U.S. causing financial wreckage, all asset classes plunged in a short period of time. In the next 12 months that followed, the price of gold increased sharply, making 2009 to 2011 the best performing years in gold's history. Hougan wrote: “Toward that end, we are reminded of what happened to gold following the 2008 crisis. Although the initial deflationary impact of that crisis drove gold prices down sharply, prices rebounded rapidly in 2009 and beyond as the government's response to the crisis rippled through the system. In fact, 2009-2011 was one of the strongest three-year return periods in gold's history.” Bitcoin has seen a fast-forwarded version of gold's swift recovery in the 2000s. When the U.S. equities market was still struggling to rebound, BTC began to see a firm recovery from $3,600. Within less than a month and a half, its price rose by more than two-fold. Based on the historical performance of gold in the aftermath of crises and the rising perception of Bitcoin as digital gold, Hougan said that Bitwise Asset Management remains increasingly bullish on the intermediate and long-term outlook for crypto. He wrote: “It is chiefly for this reason that we are increasingly bullish on the intermediate- and long-term outlook for crypto. We are in unprecedented times, seeing anomalous and unexpected developments in financial markets, including gold, and witnessing extraordinary fiscal and monetary responses to the coronavirus pandemic. In such an environment, a small allocation to crypto in a diversified portfolio seems increasingly prudent. We are hearing this from clients, and seeing it in our inflows.” Recovery is backed by actual retail demand The shift in the volume of major crypto assets from futures exchanges to spot trading platforms in recent weeks has shown that the market downturn was actively bought by retail traders, rather than by existing traders in the futures market using high leverage or debt to push up the market. The fast rebound of crypto assets, which many existing investors in the cryptocurrency market did not anticipate, could solidify the image of cryptocurrencies as a potential store of value and safe haven over the long-run.
Remember when some fans of cryptocurrencies called them non-correlated assets? They were supposed to behave differently from the stock market, not affected by traditional economic, political and fundamental forces? Cryptocurrencies were also dubbed digital gold, in the expectation they would hold their value in inflationary times. Neither has turned out to be the case. Bitcoin, the dominant cryptocurrency has fallen far more than the S&P 500 year to date, and in the face of higher inflation Bitcoin plummeted while gold has held its own. Crypto advocates point out that Bitcoin has fallen by more than 50% eight times since its 2009 launch, and three times since 2018, and it's recovered every time. And it's been a top-performing asset class with better than 35% annualized returns over the last three and five-year periods and 80% annualized returns over ten years. In addition, an entire crypto industry has developed, which is expanding rapidly and being widely accepted by Wall Street, businesses, and some governments. This week's guest is a believer. He is Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer and former Global Head of Research at Bitwise Asset Management, a cryptocurrency asset manager founded in 2017. I began the interview by asking Hougan about the role crypto assets play in a portfolio, considering they act like stocks. Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, says that the cryptocurrency market's fear over regulation is misplaced, and while threats of regulation send the market into a tizzy, he thinks that worry is misplaced and directed toward heavy-handed regulatory efforts. He thinks the potential for regulation will turn from a headwind to a tailwind, because decentralized finance goes mainstream through regulatory guidance that makes consumers more comfortable with digital assets. In a wide-ranging interview, Hougan also talks about how cryptocurrencies have performed against inflation, in the war in Ukraine and more, and discusses how non-fungible tokens are the latest verse in an age-old song of how societies develop arts and cultures during times of financial success. Also on the show, Shelly-Ann Eweka, senior director for advice strategy for TIAA, talks about how gig workers and others with non-traditional jobs can still participate in traditional retirement-savings programs, and David Miller of the Catalyst Mutual Funds discusses investing with an eye on climate change in the Market Call.

In this Bitcoin Magazine podcast, hosts David Zell and Dylan LeClair sat down with Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan to talk about the elusive bitcoin ETF. At the helm of ETF.com for more than a decade, Matt knows more about exchange traded funds than just about anyone. Through his years working alongside financial policymakers, Hougan has gained a keen understanding of the regulatory landscape regarding new ETF approvals. In this interview, Matt breaks down the impact an American bitcoin ETF would have on institutional adoption, the differences between this and existing products like Grayscale, and shares his insights on when we may see a bitcoin ETF approved in the U.S. ETFs may seem boring, but our interview certainly wasn't. Hougan shared some wild stats and projections on how a bitcoin ETF would put BTC into the hands of untold millions of Americans, notably older generations and middle-class professionals who rely on financial planners to help them prepare for retirement. This was a conversation you won't want to miss. Follow Matt on Twitter: @Matt_Hougan

With metrics and analysts predicting an upcoming downtrend for the second-generation cryptocurrency, investors have understandably become very cautious. Is Ethereum heading for a bearish market? Looking at these metrics will help answer that question.Over the last 30 days, ETH has fallen by over 25%. While it made a major recovery on 7 July, due to rising negative sentiment across the market, the altcoin fell on the charts once again. Now, somehow ETH managed to hold its position above $1800. But, that was the only positive aspect at this point. As long as ETH remains above its $1800 support, the $2200 resistance trendline can be retested.https://ambcrypto.com/anonymous-announces-intent-to-wage-war-against-china-elon-musk-with-new-token/Did ‘Anonymous' announce intent to ‘wage war' against China, Elon Musk?Anonymous is back! Beware the headline makers! According to Wall Street lore when a financial asset hits the front pages it can signal a turning point, either a recovery if negative, or a fall if positive. What’s making headlines today? Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency-related investments, including dogecoin, a meme-inspired cryptocurrency created as a joke in 2013. “This is absurd,” said Billy Markus, the co-creator of dogecoin. “I haven’t seen anything like it. It’s one of those things that once it starts going up, it might keep going up.” Dogecoin however is not the real story. Bitcoin, the world’s first and largest digital currency is, as well as Ethereum, the second largest and the blockchain networks they support. And there are other players emerging. Coinbase Global Inc, the largest market exchange for digital currencies went public on the Nasdaq this week and its $85 billion market value easily surpassed that of the Nasdaq itself and ICE, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. The cryptocurrency world has gone from fringe to close to the mainstream since our last conversation a year ago. Hougan will explain what’s driving the transformation, who the key players are, where the industry is going and the implications for investors. There is no question that Bitcoin and Coinbase and a few other cryptocurrency-related investments have arrived. As we write this Bitcoin’s market value is over one trillion dollars. On Wall Street money talks. Major firms including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and BlackRock are now offering Bitcoin products to clients. Our guest this week had the foresight and guts to get involved in ETFs in their early stages and more recently, in 2018 he threw his energy and career into cryptocurrencies believing they would become the next big, positive innovation for investors. By its very nature, the intelligence community holds more sway over this country than we will probably ever know. This reality—which has played a key role in transforming the United States into a Failed State—has its origins in the Cold War and the establishment of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1947. Norman Mailer was one of the most insightful chroniclers of Cold War America, and in this episode I talk to two people who knew him personally and saw him in action as he reckoned with the realities of the CIA and that seminal event in conspiracy culture, the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963. One of the biggest trends in investing in recent years has been the migration of investment dollars into exchange-traded funds and out of traditional mutual funds. The numbers are staggering. We are going to get his update on both. He is Matt Hougan, Global Head of Research at Bitwise Asset Management, a cryptocurrency asset manager. You never go full crypto, right? Yet clearly some in the ETF industry see a massive opportunity, hence the steady talent trickle to the nascent space. To date, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has received more than 25 filings for ETFs featuring Bitcoin. They're effectively the participants in a Cannonball Run-esque race to gain the SEC's approval -- and whoever earns that blessing and is first to market could have a multi-billion-dollar product. But is this asset class even ready for primetime? How would it even work? What roadblocks must be overcome? On this episode of Trillions, Joel and Eric are joined by the perfect guest to discuss all of this: Matt Hougan. The vice president of Bitwise Asset Management and a veteran of the ETF industry, Hougan has deep knowledge of both industries. He's also a face in the Cannonball Run race. During his entire childhood, Hougan Catela was exposed to several Christian based religions including Pentecostal, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, Southern Baptist and Nazarene and possesses considerable knowledge of the Bible. His intense exposure to several traditions throughout his life developed his deep spiritual connection so much so, that Hougan Catela studied other esoteric paths including Freemasonry, Enochian, Native American Hopi and Vodou.Shane was literally called from Haiti in Oct 1994 with then partner, Sallie Ann Glassman and was told kanzo initiation had been arranged for them and when could they arrive to Haiti? Although he had not been searching for this path, nor asked anyone to inquire about initiation, he could not deny the Lwa and decided to kanzo as Hougan Supwin in Nov, 1994 in the suburb of Bel-Air, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, West Indies. This took place about 3 weeks after the United States invaded Haiti and re-installed Jean-Claude Aristide as president. It was at this time Hougan Catela gave his life and full commitment to Bondje and to Vodou. His lineage at that time was through his Papa Edgar Jean-Louis and Papa Silva Joesef. When they returned to the United States, Hougan Catela and his then partner founded and began Island of Salvation Botanica and The Simbi-Sen Jak Ounfo, in New Orleans, LA.Hougan Catela co-owned and operated Island of Salvation Botanica, conducted all weekly Vodou ceremonies in the temple, established the first public ceremonies on behalf of the City of New Orleans to combat crime, created and conducted the now famous public ceremonies to protect the city from hurricanes, until December of 2001.During this span of 8 years, Hougan Catela made numerous visits to Haiti to further his knowledge and studies in the Haitian Vodou tradition as often as possible. Due to the dedicated and service to the Vodou religion Hougan Catela was creating through his Botanica and Vodou Temple, he was invited to Australia in 1997 to teach and conduct seminars on the Vodou tradition, which he humbly accepted. He provided almost 3 weeks worth of seminars and teachings of the Vodou religion in Sydney and Melbourne.Further, Hougan Catela has been filmed and featured on such networks as Discovery, Discovery Medical, The Learning Channel, Travel Channel and such shows as Sightings, Local Broadcast and featured in NY Times, Cond-Nast Traveler, National Inquirer, Time Picayune and many more mass media outlets. In 2002, he was told by the Lwa he had to go into the djevo again and complete the process that started 8 yrs ago, but this time to receive the additional tools he had not received the first time. After he consulted the Lwa, numerous Mambos, and Hougans about this request, he then asked Houngan Yabofe and Mambo Marie Charles to take him back to Haiti and place him in the djevo.Hougan Shane or Hougan Catela completed this process in Jan. 2003, was initiated and ordained as Hougan Asogwe and became a member of Sosyete la Belle Fleur de Ginea (of which a branch is currently located in New Orleans). Hougan Catela currently lives and works in New Orleans as a Systems Engineer for a large corporation and provides numerous Vodou services on behalf of Erzulie’s Authentic Voudou and New Orleans Mistic Botanica.http://ghostanddemonhunter.planetparanormal.com/wp-content/downloads/C09-13-09.mp3
