Did you know that there are approximately 400,000 children in the foster care system in the U.S. alone, but many children age-out of foster care without a permanent or lasting sense of family? This week on Consuming Careers, we're meeting with Andy Cook. Andy's the President & CEO of Promise686, where, for the last 11+ years, he and his team have been working tirelessly on the frontlines of the child welfare crisis by mobilizing church communities to care for vulnerable children. We're talking with Andy about how he got started, what caused him to quit a perfectly good, stable career in education to join Promise686, and what the organization is doing to impact (as they put it) the “unrelenting, unending cycle of foster care”. I really think you're going to enjoy this story, and I'll even bet you know someone who's been impacted by the work of Promise686.You can find and follow Andy Cook at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andy-cook-9425883/To learn more about Promise686, check out: https://promise686.org/Interview recorded live at Virtue Village in Peachtree Corners, Georgia; https://www.virtuevillage.com/Click to text Bruce now!About Bruce Smith: Over the past 40 years, I've covered a lot of ground in my career: white collar, blue collar, college drop-out, college graduate, practicing CPA, multiple business owner, elected official, recruiter and career consultant. How to live with curiosity
Political parties are increasingly focusing their energy and resources on the approaching general election campaign. The pace will be relentless. The atmosphere will be increasingly fraught. So as the campaign intensifies, how can think tanks make themselves heard – and help to shape policy and political debate? A dramatic – and sometimes chaotic – decade in British politics has brought new challenges to think tanks. Different think tanks, with a range of political views and policy priorities, play different roles – but how has their work evolved in recent years? What level of influence do they have in shaping the priorities and policies of opposition parties and government and how does this change in an election year? What are a think tank's responsibilities when it works with political parties, government ministers or their advisers? And does being a registered charity impact how a think tank can inform and influence public debate and policy development? These questions and more were explored in a joint Institute for Government and Charity Commission event featuring: Andy Cook, Chief Executive of the Centre for Social Justice Polly Curtis, Chief Executive of Demos Orlando Fraser KC, Chair of the Charity Commission Dr Hannah White OBE, Director of the Institute for Government The event was chaired by Lord O'Donnell, former Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service (2005–11).

Episode 171: All Mod Cons - The World's First Tribute to The Jam... Barry Pugatch and Andy Cook share their story...On this episode of the podcast, we hear the story of Barry Pugatch and Andy Cook - two fans of The Jam who ended up bringing one of the original tribute bands from the US to the UK for sell out performances in the 1990s.All Mod Cons were created in Boston, New England, USA in 1989 with Barry as Paul Weller on lead vocals and guitar with his pals - Glenn Matto (Bruce Foxton) on bass and vocals and AJ Beaulieu (Rick Buckler) on drums. What follows is a remarkable story of connections via a Paul Weller fanzine that saw Andy Cook take on management of the band to bring them to the UK for tours in the 1990s and 2000's.This was pre-From The Jam, pre-The Gift - it was really pre-tribute bands bar the odd couple like Bjorn Again and Australian Pink Floyd. At the time, All Mod Cons were also really the only way to hear a full set of those classic songs by The Jam live in concert. In our podcast chat, you'll how they both got to meet and interact with Paul, Bruce and Rick on various occasions.. and even how Barry got to jam with Paul in a unique location!... I couldn't believe it. After a string of toy shows with very little worthwhile Star Wars memorabilia, I had stumbled upon one of my best finds in years. And it happened at the Toys for the Ages Expo in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Toys for the Ages Expo is one of the premier vintage toy shows on the east coast. The brainchild of Andy Cook, the show focuses on the beloved lines from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, but it covers all of the collectibles from the past 50 years. And for Star Wars fans, it was a toy paradise. There were more Kenner and Hasbro gems at this show than at any in recent memory. Join host David Quinn for part one of a look at the weekend of the Toys for the Ages Expo. Travel out to the show, experience what Friday's setup is like for vendors, join the crew for a group dinner, and find out what made Saturday's show so memorable and so very special for collectors! The Bible, especially the Old Testament, was written in pictures! Whether or not people can get to Israel, they should still be able to visualize the land and the places mentioned in scripture. Through God's leading and provision, GTI is now partnering with former pastor Andy Cook. Andy has created a ministry called Experience Israel Now as well as the amazing visual resource of ibiblestock.org. He and Rich discuss how it all came about to offer hundreds of high quality photos and videos of the Holy Land to pastors and lay people alike. Andy also talks about Ein Gedi, the oasis in the Negev desert where David hid from King Saul. Triple-threat Andy Cook is one of Australia's greatest showmen with a string of major musical credits to his name including Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Strictly Ballroom, Oklahoma and Chicago. But when COVID hit moments after he'd achieved a new career high – announced as the villainous Duke in the Australian premiere production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical – Andy's personal and professional life was thrown into turmoil. “I felt like I constantly spent time inside for two years and was an artist sometimes… I remember going to the airport and having severe anxiety about being outside of my house.” In this podcast, Andy talks honestly about COVID's mental health toll, the personal sacrifices of life on the road and taking back control of his artistic voice. “Often you feel like you can't say no when you really need to… If you just jump from gig to gig, you've blinked and you've missed everything… You start to become resentful of the job, and you never want that as an artist.” For more honest opinions, follow us on Instagram @imho_aus, like us on Facebook @IMHOAUS, and sign up to become a Citizen Reviewer at inmyhonestopinion.com.au. “I'm an urban planner by profession and through my work as an urban planner for the city of Baltimore developed the Made in Baltimore program. So I would say that my craft is an economic development community organization. I'm also interested in all of the different types of activities that our, our member businesses do for their work. I do have a background as an artist, and through that work have done a good, fair amount of carpentry and screen printing and other types of things that a lot of our members do as well,” says Andy Cook, Founder, and CEO of the Made in Baltimore organization.Andy Cook started an organization that was much needed for Baltimore. Baltimore continues to have a bad rep whenever you hear about it on the news but Baltimore is a community of makers, entrepreneurs, and craftspeople that lift up the heart and soul of the city.“I came up with the idea for a local brand initiative in Baltimore, that's kind of the term of art for what we do here, Made in Baltimore wasn't the first local brand initiative. There are others and other cities around the country, I looked a lot towards examples in San Francisco, in New York, San Francisco made and made in NYC were programs that started before us. Also, guidance from a national organization called the Urban Manufacturing Alliance, which was kind of not exactly an umbrella organization for all of these different local brands, but they host an annual conference for people doing this type of work, supporting urban manufacturing. It was at one of their conferences in 2014, that I learned about this type of activity and thought, yeah, there's nobody doing this in Baltimore City, somebody probably should,” says Andy.Kristan chats with Andy more about how the program assists its members in their business operations, what the future holds for the program, and much more. Tune in to hear more about Andy Cook and the program he has built from the ground up.To learn more about Made in Baltimore click here. How new sports bring new safeguarding challenges.Cath Sykes, ACT's Safeguarding in Unregulated Sport officer, chats with Fnatic's Andy Cook about safeguarding in Esports.Fnatics is one of the most successful Esports teams in the world, and Esports is the fastest growing sport in the world. It sees very young people engaging in very high pressure tournaments for very large amounts of money. And much of the scouting and competing takes place online. This situation brings a host of new safeguarding challenges. In this podcast, Andy discusses how we can meet these challenges in a sector that's still growing, where the mindset is largely anti-authoritarian and naturally suspicious of rules and regulations.
Andy is a CEO of the UK think tank The Centre For Social Justice. It partners with over 400 grassroots charities to develop ambitious, evidence-based reforms to tackle the root causes of poverty.
It goes without saying that government and public services have changed substantially in the past decade. So too have the demands on public sector leaders, who are navigating their organisations through a period of unprecedented change required to meet rising demand and increased complexity of demand – all against a challenging backdrop of austerity, the COVID-19 crisis, demographic changes and what is arguably the big one – climate change. Then, of course, there's the impact of technology on the way we work, how organisations deliver services and how citizens expect to interact with those services. This changing and challenging landscape raises questions around the skills leaders of public sector organisations need – and how these skills are shifting, which is what we talk about in this podcast. Discussing this in more detail are a trio of individuals who combine an understanding of executive leadership excellence and the skills required to successfully lead organisations – from both academic and public sector delivery viewpoints. Ioanna Rossi is Strategy and Partnerships Officer at the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and Lecturer on sustainable and ethical environmental management at Ravensbourne University London. Andy Cook is Ravensbourne's Vice Chancellor, and Paul Sternberg is Director of Postgraduate Studies and Principal Research Fellow at Ravensbourne. Key talking points from this podcast include: The evolution of leadership skills across the public sector – and any gaps that exist The impact major events such as COVID-19 and the climate emergency have had on leadership Why public sector leadership skills need to be aligned with sectors including the third sector The ‘power skills' needed by today's leaders The measures leaders can take to ensure they have the necessary skills As discussed in the podcast, Ravensbourne University London and Agilisys have launched a strategic partnership to design and deliver a high-level executive programme for senior leaders across the public sector. We are seeking your views on this programme and would welcome your views on how new approaches to public sector leadership and development can be supported. The questionnaire takes no longer than 5 minutes to complete and can be found here.
The Journal of the American Medical Association states that using a nasal spray that deactivates the Covid virus in the nose, may not only prevent person-to-person spread of SARS-CoV-2, but may also diminish the severity of the disease in patients by limiting spread and decreasing viral load delivered to the lungs. Researchers have identified two agents: xylitol and grapefruit seed extract, which, when administered in the form of nasal sprays help reduce COVID-19 symptoms in patients. More from Andy Cook, the owner of Exceptional Health, who imports a nasal spray that contains xylitol and grapefruit seed extract. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Dylans special with Quentin Jennings in conversation with David Eastaugh The band was formed in early 1990 by former 1,000 Violins guitarist, songwriter, and occasional singer Colin Gregory, now on bass guitar, Jim Rodger (guitar), and Andy Curtis (guitar). They soon recruited Quentin Jennings (keyboards) and Garry Jones (drums), continuing 1,000 Volins sixties-tinged retro style, but with a nod to the "baggy" scene of the time. The band were signed to Beggars Banquet Records' "indie" subsidiary Situation Two (RCA Records in the United States), who released their debut single, "Godlike" in January 1991, which reached the top 10 of the UK Indie Chart. They subsequently replaced Curtis with Andy Cook, and released follow-up singles "Lemon Afternoon" and "Planet Love", before the band's Stephen Street-produced self-titled debut album was released in October 1991. After extensive touring, the band returned in 1992 with the "Mary Quant in Blue" single, but further line-up changes ensued, with Jones and Jennings leaving, to be replaced by Craig Scott and Ike Glover. With interest in the band growing in the United States, the band were signed to Atlantic Records, moving to the main Beggars Banquet roster in the UK for subsequent releases. Two further singles were followed by the band's swansong album, Spirit Finger on 18 April 1993. In the face of disappointing sales, the band split later that year.

Nelson Joyce, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer Tettra is an internal wiki tool, built to help companies of all sizes document their processes. It's an integrated SaaS, that helps growing teams grow strategically, methodically, and with wisdom. Rather than keep all of the knowledge in one person's head, Tettra helps teams build knowledge bases. Nelson Joyce is co-founder and Chief Product Officer. Previous to founding Tettra with co-founder Andy Cook, Nelson was with HubSpot, as a UX designer and product entrepreneur. Growth is in Nelson's core values, and he opens up about his journey. Early on in the conversation, in talking about starting Tettra, Nelson says "One of the biggest risks in starting a company is can you even work with the person or the people you're starting it with?" Figuring that out is a critical step in a growth journey for a startup. Today’s Sponsor is Impulse Creative’s Video Marketing Masterclass - George B Thomas built out an 11 module On-Demand Course on how to leverage Video in your Business. He covers everything from how to choose the right equipment, to what you can do videos about in your business. Check it out at impulsecreative.com/vfm and preview 2 modules for Free. Tettra's Shipwreck Tettra's leadership decided to be authentic and vulnerable from an early point. Nelson talked about how honest they've been along the way. "We've had plenty [of shipwrecks] and we've always shared openly. Which is hard, but I'm glad we've done it. It shows that we're human, and starting a business is hard." The biggest shipwreck for Nelson and the team was almost running out of money and having to lay people off. In the startup world, most just starting out raise money through venture capitalists (VC money), but Nelson and Andy didn't like that model. While disrupting a well-known business model may seem brave and cool, it really came down to Nelson and Andy needing to go raise money to pay employees and keep the ship sailing, but they weren't good at it. So it wasn't working and they had to cut salaries and lay people off. The experience taught them they weren't a "usual" hypergrowth, venture backed startup like so many around them in the Boston tech world. Instead, they decided to find a way to run the company in a more authentic, sustainable way for them. Nelson explains that while so many founders see VC investment leads to less risk, but he sees it as more risk. Inside of HubSpot, Nelson and Andy saw the "good side" to VC investment. Unfortunately, that's not what most companies see. There's a risk to taking money from investors, and it wasn't something Tettra leadership wanted to do. When a VC firm invests in multiple companies, they can work the numbers so if 80% of those businesses fail, they'll reap the rewards of the hypergrowth 20%. But for those businesses, failure is final; they have that one chance to beat the 80% stat. This decision essentially positions Tettra as an anti-startup, and gives the company freedom to find different measures of success. "Growing slowly is a superpower. People can get used to the system and the system scales naturally without breaking. Going the VC route or hiring really fast is the equivalent of taking steroids to get ultra strong super fast. You're able to do it, but as soon as you stop taking the steroids, your body deteriorates." It's the Swings That Kill You A tool Neslon is grateful for in his wayfinding growth journey is resiliency. He says keeping your emotions in check, not getting too low when it's low and not to head-in-the-clouds when things go well is critical to sustainable growth. Sometimes you'll close a big deal with a profitable customer, which you'll want to celebrate, then you'll lose a client by surprise and you'll want to quit it all. Nelson says you want to keep an even keel and realize that growth has its ups and downs. You can't control that, but you can control your reaction and your emotions. Document Your Growth, No Matter Your Size From its inception, Tettra team members have used their own system. Even as a very small startup, Nelson says they documented everything. The benefit is that every step is written down so you can go back, slow down, and think through why a decision was made. Putting systems in place and documenting them increases efficiency. Tettra is 7 people, but they get work done like their much bigger. And Nelson attributes a lot of that to using their own tool. The biggest shipwreck for Nelson and the team was almost running out of money and having to lay people off. When Andy Cook talks about his wrestling career, he doesn't hide the fact he didn't do the right things in college. After washing out his collegiate career and spending time away from the sport, Cook found his way back, eventually starting a club in the Pacific Northwest. A few years later, he was the head women's coach at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington and on tours with Team USA. Now Cook finds himself in the lead women's coaching position with the Indian National Team. How does a club coach in Washington end up being the leader of a foreign national team? This is the second of 2 podcasts around Sepsis and Learning Disabilities, which are the result from the most recent Learning Disabilities Mortality Review Report, which found Sepsis to be the second most prominent cause of death in the cases reviewed, following pneumonia closely as the first. In the past two years the Sepsis Clinical Priority program has discussed the use of National Early Warning Scores and physiology in general when it comes to patients with Sepsis. However, what happens when physiology is not possible? It may be that a patient is unable to cope with observations being taken, is not able to comply, or that staff looking after these patients are not trained in observations. For these patients, Soft Signs of deterioration take on extra significance. Andy Cook, Chief Nurse at Interserve has done some interesting work with Soft Signs in the community and has very kindly agreed to talk about them today.

Welcome to Episode 66 of The VentureFizz Podcast, the flagship podcast from the leading authority for jobs & careers in the tech industry. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Andy Cook, Co-Founder & CEO of Tettra, a knowledge management system for high-performance teams. This could be my most transparent interview ever. When you ask most startup founders how things are going, the majority are likely going to say, “We are crushing it.” However, building a company is really hard, and growing a successful startup is rarely, if ever, a straight line. Andy recently published a series of blog posts where he shares the intimate details on the ups and downs of building a startup, so I was really excited to chat with him about the really deep and gritty details that go into building a startup, including the depths of nearly failing, to plowing through and coming out the other end to a profitable path for Tettra. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: -Andy's background, and how he started a rental marketplace called Rentabilities with his brother and how they were able to convince Dharmesh Shah from HubSpot to write the first angel check. -The aha moment behind Tettra and the current state & scale of the company. -A ton of details on the ups and downs he's experienced building a company from the ground up, including lots of info on fundraising, finding the right sales model, & how they got to profitability. -The importance of staying transparent when running your business especially with employees. -Tips for communicating with investors. -Plus, a lot more. Lastly, if you like the show, please remember to subscribe to and review us on iTunes, or your podcast player of choice!
Rather than jump immediately into writing code, Andy Cook (@AndyGCook) and his cofounder Nelson (@nelsonjoyce) began their journey by spending weeks talking to and learning from potential customers. This wasn't their first time around the startup block. But to their surprise, when they finished their product and it was time for people to start using it, nobody wanted to. Learn how they iterated on their idea to turn it into a business that now generates hundreds of thousand of dollars in revenue.Transcript, speaker information, and more: https://www.indiehackers.com/podcast/077-andy-cook-of-tettra

Leadin is a project that was conceived and continues to be nurtured at the Hubspot headquarters. While there is a plugin to integrate WordPress with the Hubspot system plugin, Leadin was expressly created to use as a standalone WordPress marketing automation plugin for small businesses. The creators, Nelson Joyce and Andy Cook, were given little guidance about exactly what functions Leadin should address and how it should work. The Leadin duo invested time listening to prospective users. They engaged in discovery conversations to uncover if the prototypes they had created solved problems that were meaningful to the audience. Nelson and Andy had a variety of ideas to start but only one of their ideas generated the type of feedback and signals to move ahead and become more refined. The creators share how they gathered and compiled unfiltered user feedback by focusing on an interviewee's actual usage scenarios not hypothetical ones. Interview takeaway lessons for launching a product: Get excited about the problem you are working on not the solution you have created.
