SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 46The Astronomy, Space and Science News PodcastUnraveling Black Hole Jets, Martian Dust Devils, and Earth's Tectonic MysteriesIn this episode of SpaceTime, we explore groundbreaking research that sheds light on how black holes generate their powerful plasma jets. A new study reveals that these jets are formed when superheated gas experiences a rapid shrinking towards the black hole's event horizon, offering insights into galaxy evolution and the fundamental physics of black holes. We discuss the implications of these findings for understanding cosmic phenomena and the behavior of matter in extreme gravitational fields.NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover Observes Martian TwistersNext, we delve into the fascinating observations made by NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover, which has captured images of dust devils swirling on the rim of Jezero Crater. These dust devils, including one consuming another, provide important data on Martian atmospheric conditions and help refine our climate models of the Red Planet. The rover's findings highlight the role of these phenomena in influencing Martian weather and surface interactions.New Insights into Earth's Tectonic PlatesAdditionally, we discuss a new study that uncovers how anomalies in the Earth's mantle transition zone affect the movement of tectonic plates. The research suggests that thick basaltic rock compositions within this zone can influence the trajectory and speed of subducting plates, which is vital for understanding the recycling of surface materials and the long-term stability of Earth's climate. This discovery opens new avenues for studying plate tectonics and its implications for our planet's habitability.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 46 for broadcast on 16 April 202500:49 Mechanisms behind black hole jet formation06:30 Implications for galaxy evolution and black hole physics12:15 Mars Perseverance Rover's dust devil observations18:00 Importance of dust devils in Martian climate studies22:45 Insights into Earth's tectonic plate movement27:00 Summary of recent geological findings30:15 Science report: Social media's impact on body imagewww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Kratki filmi na Festivalu slovenskega filma 2024

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2024 4:10

Eksperimentalni filmi so poglavje zase in letos smo videli nekaj izstopajočih izdelkov.

The study, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, provides new insights into the mysterious optical and ultraviolet emissions observed during these catastrophic events. Lead author Daniel Price from Monash University explains that the simulation captures the full evolution of the debris from a star being tidally disrupted by a black hole.*New Revelations About Earth's MantleA new study reveals that the chemical composition of the Earth's mantle is uniform globally and only changes as it passes through different layers of crust closer to the planet's surface. Reported in the journal Nature Geoscience, the findings suggest that lavas from volcanic hotspots around the world likely originate from a worldwide uniform reservoir in the Earth's mantle.*Water More Widespread on the Moon Than Previously ThoughtNew maps from both the near and far sides of the Moon show that the lunar surface contains vast amounts of water, mostly locked in the lunar regolith. The findings, published in the Planetary Science Journal, suggest multiple sources of water and hydroxyl in sunlit rocks and soils, including water-rich rocks excavated by meteor impacts at all lunar latitudes.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.comThis week's guests include: Professor Daniel Price from Monash University

Charles Gammie is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Born with an insatiable curiosity and a love for mathematics, Dr. Gammie's journey to the forefront of astrophysics was anything but ordinary. Despite initially having ambitions of becoming a lawyer, a serendipitous encounter with a wise advisor steered him toward statistics and physics. Little did he know, this fateful decision would set him on a path toward the cosmos, propelling him into the world of astrophysics and a PhD he never envisioned. Today, Dr. Gammie stands as a theoretical and computational astrophysicist whose research focuses on black holes, and the formation of stars, moons, and planets, where he has developed numerical methods for modeling relativistic plasmas, relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics, and radiative processes in hot plasmas. Notably, Dr. Gammie co-led the theoretical modeling efforts for the Event Horizon Telescope (ETH) project, enabling the interpretation of the EHT data and the groundbreaking first-ever image of a supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. This unprecedented collaboration across continents and disciplines showcased human ingenuity and the pursuit of knowledge. In this conversation, Dr. Gammie shared profound insights into black holes, their mechanics, spinning nature, and implications for understanding time and space. He also explored existential topics like extraterrestrial life and reconciling science with religious beliefs, offering inspiring advice for young minds to embrace curiosity and the unconventional. Prepare to illuminate the shadowy frontiers of space in SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 47. We begin by shedding light on new findings that reveal brown dwarfs, those celestial enigmas straddling the line between the largest planets and the smallest stars, are far more star-like than we ever imagined. Born from the same intricate dance of gas and dust that gives rise to stars, these failed stars have a story more intertwined with their luminous kin than previously thought. Next, we peer into the future, where the clock is ticking down to an explosive cosmic event. Astronomers eagerly anticipate a nova eruption within a binary star system, set to dazzle the skies sometime before year's end. This stellar spectacle, a cyclical detonation on the surface of a white dwarf, promises to be a beacon in the night, echoing observations that date back over a century. We then voyage to the extreme starburst galaxy M82, a crucible of creation churning out new stars at a rate tenfold that of our own Milky Way. With the James Webb Space Telescope piercing through the cosmic dust, we get a front-row seat to the galactic winds and star-forming frenzy defining this compact powerhouse of a galaxy. And in the Science Report, we delve into the role of homosexual behavior in mammalian social bonding, the alarming rise in simultaneous heatwaves and sea level extremes on global coastlines, the potential psychological effects of teenage screen time, and the latest in home entertainment and security tech that's shaping our digital lives. For the full cosmic journey, visit our website at https://spacetimewithstuartgary.com and support the show at https://www.spreaker.com/show/spacetime. They explore the tendency to seek shortcuts to success and the frustration that arises from this mindset. Erik emphasize the importance of recognizing the value of accumulated small decisions and actions over time, which ultimately shape one's life, business, and relationships. They draw insights from historical examples, such as the race to the South Pole and the contrasting strategies of Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen. The discussion highlights the difference between maximum speed and maximum sustainable pace, emphasizing the need for intentional and consistent progress rather than burnout-inducing intensity. John and Erik reflect on their own practices and adjustments in light of the concept of accretion, emphasizing the importance of relaxation, patience, and elegant ambition. Forming equal mass planetary binaries by pebble accretion by T. J. Konijn et al. on Wednesday 30 November Binary solar system objects are common and range from satellite systems with very large mass ratios $M_1/M_2$ to mass ratios very close to unity. A well-known example of a binary is the Pluto-Charon system. With Charon only eight times less massive than Pluto the question arises as for many other systems, why the mass-ratio is still close to unity. There is much evidence that (binary) planet(esimal) formation happened early, when the protoplanetary gas disk was still around. It is likely that (some of) these binaries grew up together subject to pebble accretion. Here we focus on the question of how the mass arriving in the gravitational influence zone of the binary during pebble accretion, is distributed over the binary components. Does the accretion through time lead to a converging mass ratio, or to a diverging mass ratio? We numerically integrate pebble paths in the same well-known fashion as for a single mass subject to pebble accretion and track what the efficiency of accretion is for the two separate binary components, compared to a single body with the same mass. These numerical simulations are done for a range of binary mass-ratios, mutual separations, Stokes numbers and two orbital distances, 2.5 and 39 au. We find that in the limit where pebbles start to spiral around the primary (this holds for relatively large pebbles), the pebble preferentially collides with the secondary, causing the mass ratio to converge towards unity on Myr timescales. In this regime the total sweep-up efficiency can lower to half that of a pebble-accreting single body because pebbles that are thrown out of the system, after close encounters with the system. The results show that systems such as Pluto-Charon and other larger equal mass binaries could well have co-accreted by means of pebble accretion in the disk phase without producing binaries with highly diverging mass-ratios. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16083v1

Simultaneous gas accretion onto a pair of giant planets: Impact on their final mass and on the protoplanetary disk structure by Camille Bergez-Casalou et al. on Wednesday 30 November Several planetary systems are known to host multiple giant planets. However, when two giant planets are accreting from the same disk, it is unclear what effect the presence of the second planet has on the gas accretion process of both planets. In this paper we perform long-term 2D isothermal hydrodynamical simulations (over more than 0.5 Myrs) with the FARGO-2D1D code, considering two non-migrating planets accreting from the same gaseous disk. We find that the evolution of the planets' mass ratio depends on gap formation. However, in all cases, when the planets start accreting at the same time, they end up with very similar masses (0.9 $

Modeling Reconstructed Images of Jets Launched by SANE Super-Eddington Accretion Flows Around SMBHs with the ngEHT by Brandon Curd et al. on Wednesday 30 November Tidal disruption events (TDEs) around super massive black holes (SMBHs) are a potential laboratory to study super-Eddington accretion disks and sometimes result in powerful jets or outflows which may shine in the radio and sub millimeter bands. In this work, we model the thermal synchrotron emission of jets from general relativistic radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of a BH accretion disk/jet system which assumes the TDE resulted in a magnetized accretion disk around a BH accreting at $sim 12-25$ times the Eddington accretion rate. Through synthetic observations with the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) and an image reconstruction analysis, we demonstrate that TDE jets may provide compelling targets, within the context of the models explored in this work. In particular, we find that jets launched by a SANE super-Eddington disk around a spin $a_*=0.9$ reach the ngEHT detection threshold at large distances (up to 100 Mpc in this work). A two-temperature plasma in the jet or weaker jets, such as a spin $a_*=0$ model, requires a much closer distance as we demonstrate detection at 10 Mpc for limiting cases of $a_*=0,,mathcal{R}=1$ or $a_*=0.9,, mathcal{R}=20$. We also demonstrate that TDE jets may appear as superluminal sources if the BH is rapidly rotating and the jet is viewed nearly face on. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.15906v1

One of the more advanced technical topics that can come up during interviews is the concept of accretion dilution. This is essentially one of the key metrics that bankers look at anytime they're working on a M&A transaction. It's not the only thing that matters in determining whether it's a good deal, but it is something that shareholders care about. But how do you calculate accretion dilution? What are the different inputs that can affect the outcome? Hear me coach one of my students through this during a mock interview.
