In the last episode, we talked about the enormous impact that relatively mundane choices like what we eat have on the health of the planet. In this episode, we talk about another part of our everyday habits that we might not normally think about in earthkeeping terms: what we wear—and the impact of the clothing choices we make on the planet as a whole. To get us thinking about our OWN fashion habits, let me ask you a couple of questions: First though, pick just one item of clothing you are wearing right now. Do you know where that garment was made, and how far it had to travel to get to you? Or let me ask this: Do you know anything about the people who actually made the fabric this item is made of . . . . or anything about the people who stitched all the pieces together . . . or how much they were paid to do it? Do you even know what this item of clothing is made of—or importantly, what impact the making of that material had on the environment?  I think a lot of us would be hard pressed to answer even one of those questions. But for those of us who long to become better at loving and caring for all creation, these are the kinds of questions we need to ask of ourselves and of our habits. And that is why we talked with Kathleen Audet, owner of an image consulting firm called Allegory. She has made it her mission to promote awareness about the things we wear—and to think about social and environmental justice when it comes to buying, owning, and even getting rid of clothing. Also, as part of our focus on “greening all vocations” in this season of the podcast, Kathleen shares the story of how she has found ways to do good for people and planet through her work as an image consultant.” Guest: Kathleen Audet Allegory Styling LinkedIn Mentions: The True Cost  Rana Plaza collapse Stewards of Eden by Sandra L Richter James Speth For Days Allegory Resource Page Keywords: image consulting, sustainability, spirituality, religion, style, fashion, fashion industry, personal image, pollution, waste, consumers, affordability, ethics, fair labor, child labor, traceability, social justice, awareness, fast fashion, greening, scripture, creation care, capsule wardrobe, environment Find us on our website: Earthkeepers Support the Earthkeepers podcast Check out the Ecological Disciple

When you think "mom fashion," it may sound like an oxymoron because moms are stereotypically viewed as frumpy and disheveled because we are too busy sacrificing for our kids. Hello! But it doesn't have to be this way. We CAN look like a million bucks and we SHOULD spend time and energy to do so because it does wonders for our confidence and self-esteem, which makes us better as moms, at our jobs, and positively impacts every facet of our life. Katie Kabel is the founder of Kabel Styles and is my personal stylist. After spending over 20 years working in retail, Katie left work to start a family. She always enjoyed working, and knew she wanted to return to work when the time was right. She was eager to get back to doing what she loves; cultivating meaningful relationships, making women and men feel confident and empowered. Working as a personal stylist allows her to fulfill her desire to be productive and creative while still attending to the needs of her young family. Being a personal stylist is so much more than dressing an individual, it's about a relationship of trust, gratitude, and commitment. Giving someone the confidence to walk into an interview, go on a first date, tackle a new life adventure, or simply putting a smile on their face. That's why she doesn't just label herself as a personal shopper/stylist but also as an image consultant. Listen in to Katie's top tips for moms on the staples they should have in their closet and what pieces they should consider that are flattering, functional, fashionable, and fun! Think about your favourite artists of all time. The ones that inspire you deep in your soul and maybe even motivated you to become an artist yourself. Why do you love them? You most likely appreciate them for more than their talent. It may be their personality, fashion sense, work ethic, values, or beliefs. When they share their vulnerability, struggles and triumphs you may see yourself in those stories. The most successful artists don't stress about competition because there is no competition. No one else possesses their exact combination of skills, experience and personality. The same can be said for you, however, most of us don't take the time to explore and embrace who we really are and figure out what makes us unique.During my sixteen years in arts and entertainment publicity, the media evolved significantly. An artist with a new project is no longer enough to garner press coverage. I began to witness too many artists and creatives wasting money on PR, radio and social media marketing campaigns before they were ready.Artists didn't take the time to do the deep inner work of personal branding so the lack of results left them frustrated and defeated.Personal branding is the key to success, and I realized that I could have a greater impact coaching artists through the process. I created the Superfan Attraction Method and the first stage is authentic personal branding. In this episode I will review the various steps to cultivate yours. For video version and a more detailed article visit https://dianefoy.com/202

Becoming Your Best Version

Batul Sadiq is the founder, owner and wardrobe stylist at BHS Image Consulting, in the Washington, D.C. area. She realized, as a young professional and mother, how image and style could be used as tools to communicate personal and professional goals. She was able to attract positions and experiences in which she was valued by, in part, honing in on her own authentic style, and ultimately made the decision to be in control of her own narrative. Batul uses her experience to work with women to identify their personal style and guides them in curating a fun and functional wardrobe to enhance their lives, empower their spirits and achieve their goals. BHS Image Consulting is the realization of a dream that started in the heart of the fashion district in New York City where she received extensive training from industry veterans and had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow creatives. She continued her journey in the neighborhoods of San Francisco and learned the value of a holistic approach to the art of dress in addition to its impact on individuals, communities and the environment, around the globe. Her initial desire to support women at different stages of life and encourage them to strip themselves of the labels placed on them has grown with time. "There is no budget, body type or image standard, but rather the unique needs of people looking to share their spark with the world," Batul says. Since 2005, she has assisted women across the country from all backgrounds to reveal their most authentic selves through their wardrobe styling and image. She helps women overcome roadblocks in their lives and recounts stories of clients who finally started feeling heard in their workplaces when they owned their authenticity and felt better about themselves, starting with identifying and owning their personal style. Batul shares that we should employ the "teflon/velcro" technique of letting negative comments slide off of us, while holding onto the positive feedback we receive. Her driving force for her entrepreneurship venture was to identify and stay true to her "why." She gives herself permission to be her best and affirms each day that she is deserving. As are you. Her time spent at the Fashion Institute of Technology and San Francisco State University, combined with her Asian American Muslim upbringing, has shaped her perspective on the way we dress and its impact on business, environments and people. Batul also is an image consulting coach for Emerge Consulting Solutions, a member of Fashion Group International and a blog contributor at Mind Body Soul Sisterz, which brings together women who offer concrete steps to help us own our own authenticity and achieve our goals. Julie Thurburn, as guest host, and Susan Stageman discuss visual rapport -- What are you wearing for the conversation you want to have? Julie is a Certified Image Consultant.  In a slightly different format, they talk about rapport from a different angle: how our appearance can make or break rapport from the outside to the internal feelings we have. After Julie discusses why she got into Image Consulting and  the greatest challenges she solves for her clients, they discuss 1.  Personal Style is about you – what works best for you. That's colors, designs, garment details, etc. Being Trendy is about what others want you to wear. They choose the colors for you to buy that season, etc. 2. Trendy is a very expensive wardrobe because you're stuck in a cycle of pleasing people you don't even know – and who don't know you.  It's not a personal look, it's just buying clothes which must be replaced often (expensive) or prevent you from representing your best self (limiting your opportunities).3. Why is it so hard to know what to wear for every occasion? Having rapport with yourself is key to having rapport with others when you are doubtful and having internal negative conversations you are out of rapport with yourself and difficult to get into rapport with others.4. In part, because we often dress to please others and hope that the outfit is conveying the right message, with the ‘right message' being the one you ‘hope' others pick up on.  When you know what works for your shape and the impact colors have on the brain, you can more confidently choose the outfit that accurately conveys the message you want others to respond to.5. Having a sense of style helps create rapport with others. Knowing the styles/colors that work best for you helps you represent yourself at a higher level than when you just buy something off a mannequin because someone else chooses for the mannequin but not necessarily for you. So when you know how to choose well for yourself you dress more authentically than when you dress like a mannequin. It can establish visual boundaries and lets others know what kind of conversations you want to have. 5. The internal benefit of easily creating rapport with others is greater confidence in yourself because the results you want are easier to attain.

Favorite Success Quote “Success does not always look like what you hope it will “~Anonymous Key Points 1. Focus on Fit  No matter what your clothing budget is, always focus on fit first. A $20 shirt from Old Navy can look better than a $300 Tommy Bahama shirt if it the fit is better. Be sure to try on different sizes of clothing for different brands and styles as a medium in one brand name may be too small in another. Realize that a tighter budget is not an excuse for bad style. Look for those few key wardrobe items and buy a quality article of clothing that fits like a glove. 2. The Goal of Style is to Increase Confidence The ultimate goal of improving your style and your grooming is to increase your confidence. When your body looks great and your clothes look great, you are going to feel great. When you put your best foot forward, you will have increased confidence and self esteem, and this will lead to an increase in opportunities and relationship successes. 3. Learn to Differentiate Between Constructive and Deconstructive Criticism  Any entrepreneur, businessman, or public figure is going to attract a far amount of controversy, and with this controversy always comes criticism. This criticism typically comes in one of two forms either constructive or deconstructive. Constructive criticism, although uncomfortable, will help you to grow and improve yourself as a man and a leader. Deconstructive criticism on the other hand will do nothing but toxifiy your life and lower your self esteem. Seek constructive criticism and cut out as many sources of deconstructive criticism as you can.
