This week, a special road trip episode featuring Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas, a four day acoustic music marathon and arts & crafts fair held every September in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound, that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Celebrating fourteen years together as a band, Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA continues to push the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music. Seeking to preserve and continue a traditional culture in a modern age, RUNA creates the backbone of its signature roots sound from the musical and geographical diversity of its individually established band members. Their strive for excellence and creativity blazes a trail for the future of folk music, earning them the reputation as one of the most innovative Irish folk groups of this generation. RUNA consists of vocalist Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist, Fionán de Barra, acclaimed drummer Cheryl Prashker (Full Frontal Folk, Jonathan Edwards), fiddler Jake James of New York, and three-time Canadian fiddle champion Tom Fitzgerald, who also plays mandolin. - https://runamusic.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of Ozark original Mike McGhee performing the Classic Child ballad “Barbara Allen,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater profiles the legendary Ozark song catcher, Mary Celestia Parler.
Lost Animals, Disappearing Worlds: Stories of Extinction (Reaktion, 2025) by Reverend Barbara Allen presents thirty-one extinct species through the personal perspectives of those animals. This intimate approach not only highlights each species but explores the broader implications of losing a species forever. How do we honour such a loss? Can we grieve for species we never knew? These animals range from the well-known passenger pigeon, thylacine and great auk, to lesser-known creatures like the Arabian ostrich, Saint Helena earwig and Bramble Cay melomys. These poignant portraits tug on the heartstrings and aim to inspire readers to protect vulnerable and endangered species today, motivating them to play a positive role in conserving our planet's biodiversity. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. All kinds of stories are told at the weekly rehearsals. Some are shared for laughs. Others are merely melodies and improvisations. Some come with pictures. And some — like this one — are the tales that are many times older than all of us.As reported here earlier, traditional versions of “Pretty Polly” were on some of the first discs made by Appalachian musicians at the dawn of the recording industry. These included Eastern Kentuckian John Hammond's "Purty Polly" of 1925 and the "Pretty Polly" versions of B.F. Shelton and Dock Boggs, both in 1927.To read more about the song's fascinating origin story — it goes back nearly 300 years in Great Britain, had immigrated in the U.S. by the early 20th century to be collected by song hunter Cecil Sharp and obtained honored status in the folk song revival of the 1960s — check out the earlier Flood Watch article by clicking here.Floodifying It The Flood's version of this song lyrically follows the well-established narrative of Polly and Willie's fateful night, but melodically it takes a lot of liberties with the traditional tune. The rendition, in fact, is built on a musical idea that dates back a half century to pre-Flood days. When Charlie Bowen and David Peyton were just starting out as a duo in the early 1970s, they discovered that a repeated scale descending from an opening minor chord resonated nicely on the guitar-Autoharp accompaniment to their voices.Over the decades, each configuration of the band has found something new to contribute to this basic arrangement. And it is still happening. Just listen to what Dan Cox and Jack Nuckols brought to the song at a rehearsal earlier this month.More Folkiness? If you'd like more tunes from The Flood's dustier shelves, you can use Flood Watch's resources to find some. Visit the “Tunes on the Timeline” department; click here to reach it.Once there, scroll all the way to the bottom for links to timeless tunes and their stories, from “Barbara Allen” to “Wayfaring Stranger” listed in the Traditional category.Meanwhile, if you'd like to add even a little more Flood folkery to your wintry Friday, don't forget the free Radio Floodango music streaming service, where you can turn on the “Folk” channel for a randomize playlist of tunes.Click here to give it a spin.A Note about The GraphicsFinally, back to the video that tops this week's article, note that the graphics used to illustrate the performance were generated by artificial intelligence. As reported here earlier, nowadays we sometimes use free online AI software called ImageFX to create accommodating art for these pages. In this case, that software was asked to generate pictures that appeared to be in an old-fashioned quilt. Let us know what you think of the results. This is a public episode. A third of a millennium ago, Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary about a New Year's party at which he hear the “little Scotch song of Barbary Allen….”Scholars often cite that Jan. 2, 1666, entry as evidence that this famous ballad — which tells the tale of a beautiful woman who denies a dying man's love, then dies of grief soon after his untimely demise — already was hundreds of years old by the time Francis Child collected it in the late 19th century.Barbara's Other LifeIn fact, ethnomusicologists Steve Roud and Julia Bishop described it as "far and away the most widely collected song in the English language — equally popular in England, Scotland and Ireland — with hundreds of versions collected over the years in North America.”Roud and Bishop wondered if the ballad was originally written for a stage performance. Supported that, they point out that Pepys' diary entry mentions hearing a professional actress name Elizabeth Knepp singing the song at that notable New Year's party. However, folklorists Phillips Barry and Fannie Hardy Eckstorm dispute that idea. The ballad "was not a stage song at all,” they say, “but a libel on Barbara Villiers and her well-publicized adulteries with King Charles II.” Fellow folkie Charles Seeger liked that theory, adding that Pepys' delight at hearing a libelous song about the king's mistress would be perfectly in character for him.Print and Recordings“Barbara Allen” was frequently published in Britain throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, but it was not until 1836 that it appeared in America. After that, many variations were printed in broadsides in the United States through the 19th and 20th centuries. The earliest recording of the song probably was a 1907 wax cylinder made by Lincolnshire folk singer Joseph Taylor. The first vinyl recordings were Vernon Dalhart's in 1927 and Bradley Kincaid's the following year.Since then, some 500 traditional recordings have been indexed by the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.Where, Oh Where? The song usually begins with a variation on the line, “In Scarlet Town where I was born there was a fair maid dwelling….”Don't bother looking; there is no such place as Scarlet Town, at least not in the geographical world recorded in the Britannica Atlas or in Google Maps. An invented name, it might be, some speculate, an ancient metaphor for a home of scarlet women. However, Wikipedia is curious if “Scarlet Town" might be a punning reference to Reading, the town on the Thames and Kennet rivers in southern England. Supporting that theory is the fact that a 1790 version of the song has a reference to “in Reading town, where I was bound.”Folk RevivalistsIn the 1950s and ‘60s, most folk revivalists — Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie and Joan Baez leading the list — recorded versions of the ballad.Famously, Bob Dylan noted that folk songs are highly influential in his work. As he wrote in a poem, “Without ‘Barbara Allen' there'd be no ‘Girl from the North Country.'” Early on, Bob performed an eight-minute rendition of the original ballad, which was subsequently released on his Live at The Gaslight 1962 album. Our Take on the TuneCharlie Bowen brought us our version recently after revisiting his own favorite rendition, Tom Rush's 1963 pressing of the song (calling it “Barb'ry Ellen”) on Prestige/Folklore. Like Rush, Charlie cultivates a slightly different melody line. He also brings in his resonator guitar and slide to give the tune a slightly bluesy quality. Then Danny Cox and Sam St. Clair add beautiful solos and Randy Hamilton provides the perfect subtle vocal harmonies along with his bass lines. Here's the result. This is a public episode. Tom Shipley is an antique dealer operating out of his family's 19th-century Sharp's Country Store in Slatyfork, West Virginia. Descending from one of the county's earliest pioneer families, we hear of the lives of Tom's ancestors & their many rich folkways: a Presbyterian boy orphaned by an Indian raid; beekeeping in "bee gums;" a bear trap; furs & ginseng; maple syrup camp; and making apple butter. Then Tom gets into the origin of the 1884 store, describing the wares of its day. A plethora of stories are evoked from the eccentric taxidermy still hanging from the walls including one about a visit from the American Museum of Natural History. Towards the end, for his formal story, we get into the realm of the southern gothic, with tales about an orphan of the flu pandemic followed by visions surrounding the dead & near-dead. This episode, like the country store itself, is a true time capsule of Appalachian life. Check out Sharp's Country Store for more information.Excerpts read from Tales of Pocahontas County by G.D. "Dear Mom" is written and performed by former Navy Corpsman Shannon Book, along with his band, Deliberately Broken. The song is born from a request Shannon received, to write a song about Gold Star Moms. For those unfamiliar with the term, a Gold Star Mom is a mom who has lost a son or daughter in military service. The term "Gold Star," when placed in front of the words wife, brother, sister, family, also refers to someone who has lost a loved one in military service. With the help of Operation Encore, and the extraordinary talent of people like Director Chris Martini and cinematographer Chad Campbell, Shannon and a cast of all military families spent a few days on set filming the powerful video for "Dear Mom."While the video reflects its military origins, the song has evolved to transcend military sacrifice. All you need to do is listen to the lyrics as if being spoken directly to you, by the person you miss. Then listen to it again, letting it wash over you - and let the bittersweet tears fall. In this episode, Shannon Book shares his personal story of service and working for years to see his dreams become reality. He shares insight on what it takes to never stop believing in that dream. He takes us behind the scenes of the filming, as well.

With just two months to go until our Great American Summit, it's time to connect you with our event beneficiaries. First up is Carry the Load. This is an organization whose mission statement should resonate strongly with all of us, but which resonates deeply with co-founder Barb Allen, Whose husband Lou was killed in Iraq- just 10 days after he deployed on Memorial Day, 2005. Former Navy SEAL Clint Bruce was at a backyard BBQ one Memorial Day weekend when a sudden weight overcame him. Unsure how to process the emotions that hit him, CLint laced up his boots and went for a walk, leaving the meat on the grill. Clint is unsure how far he walked that day, but a few miles into his journey he encountered another veteran. This man was seasoned- his service took place when Clint was just a boy- and he recognized a troubled soul when he saw one. With a soft smile and gentle voice he asked Clint, "Who are you carrying?"And that was the moment Carry the Load was born. Please leave a review and share this podcast episode with your friends!Follow Barb Allen on InstagramJoin The Great American Syndicate

In this episode of Enter The Muse, Nick Hail talks to American patriot Barbara Allen who shares the remarkable and tragic story of how her husband was murdered in the military by a fellow soldier who was honorably discharged, and how it took her 10 years to finally recover which enabled her to write a book and give TEDx talks. Barbara goes on to talk about the criticism she's faced being an open Trump advocate, how if the election is rigged could mean the end of democracy, and whether America could go through another civil war.
Barb Allen became a Gold Star widow at 32 years old. She learned her husband was murdered by another soldier while in Iraq and was left to raise 4 small boys (ages 6,5,3, and 1) while navigating her own grief and the extensive repeated trauma attached to a 3 1⁄2 year court-martial process. She suffered another trauma when the killer was acquitted. Barb was not even remotely prepared to face this loss or the prolonged trauma of the court-martial. She became suicidal and fought her way back from that. Today she is stronger, happier, and more grateful than ever to live her beautiful life. Barb is a national speaker, author of Front Toward Enemy and podcast host of American Snippets. You will be amazed by Barb's resilience, wisdom and desire to make a real difference in our world.
