In this episode of the Animal Control Report, hosts Ashley, Ashlee, and Daniel engage in a candid conversation with Temma Martin, a former Best Friends Animal Sanctuary employee, to discuss the "no kill" movement and its controversial impact on homeless pets. Temma brings her extensive experience to the table, offering her perspective on why "no kill" policies may not be the ultimate solution for animal welfare. The discussion breaks down the unintended consequences of the "no kill" philosophy, such as overcrowded shelters, compromised animal care, and the pressure placed on staff and resources. Temma and the hosts explore why this approach has created a significant divide in the animal welfare industry, highlighting the ethical and practical dilemmas faced by shelters striving to meet "no kill" standards. Tune in for a thought-provoking episode that challenges the idealistic view of "no kill" and prompts a reevaluation of what truly constitutes humane and effective animal welfare practices. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/animalcontrolreport/support

This week on Finding Your Bliss, Celebrity Interviewer and Bliss Coach Judy Librach is joined by Linda Kohanov! Linda Kohanov is the author of the Tao of Equus, which has now been revised and reprinted in a new and exciting edition. She's on the show to talk all about her connection with horses and how they can teach us to have better relationships and be better humans on this planet. A 5 time author and an internationally recognized author, speaker, and educator, she specializes in exploring the power and potential of the horse-human bond. Linda specializes in developing and teaching socially intelligent leadership, nonverbal communication, and other advanced human development skills. In 1997, she founded a Southern Arizona-based collective of educators, coaches, counselors, and horse professionals exploring the power and potential of the incredible connection between horses and humans. The organization, Eponaquest Worldwide, has grown to serve clients on six continents. Linda's first bestselling book The Tao of Equus was selected as one of the top books of 2001 by Amazon.com and received appreciative reviews in diverse publications. This title, and her subsequent four books, have been translated into French, German, Dutch, and Czech, and are used as texts at universities. In 2013, Linda's fourth book The Power of the Herd: A Nonpredatory Approach to Social Intelligence, Leadership and Innovation explored what horses have to teach us about leadership and social intelligence, with extensive historical and scientific research showing why the world's most innovative and effective leaders, from Alexander the Great to the Buddha to George Washington and Winston Churchill, were exceptional horsemen who honed the nonverbal skills associated with leadership presence on horseback. The book also translates the practical skills horses teach directly to use at work, school, home, and in religious, political and social activism contexts. Linda's fifth book The Five Roles of a Master Herder, was published in June 2016, and has been translated into multiple languages. Over the last decade, Linda has appeared at numerous conferences, universities and retreat centers, including the Organization Development Conference, the Omega Institute in New York, Naropa University in Boulder, CO, the University of Arizona, Prescott College, the International Transpersonal Conference, Hollyhock British Columbia, and the 2008 Equine Guided Education Conference, among many other venues. She has been a leadership trainer for Raytheon since 2007, and has also led trainings for executive teams at Nike, Chubb Insurance, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and the Bensman Group of financial advisors, among other companies. In 2014, she led a master class on the Five Roles of a Master Herder in Paris at the Executive MBA Program “Leading Innovation in a Digital World” de l'Institut Mines-Telecom. Didier Tranchier, head of this international program, wrote that this presentation “changed my life and the life of everyone in the conference room. Explaining the differences between a dominant and a leader, and the usefulness of predatory power when balanced with non-predatory power were real insights to understand how companies are working and how we can improve our efficiency. With very simple words and great examples coming from the world of horses and traditional herding cultures, Linda explained the power of groups and how to build relationships that can enable any individual to steer and leverage large and powerful organizations.” Linda is considered one of the founders of the field of Equine-Facilitated Experiential Learning, which teaches people how to excel in life by practicing innovative leadership, relationship, nonverbal communication, and emotional and social intelligence skills through safe, engaging, non-riding activities with horses. She has also worked with a number of psychologists in the field of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy, and regularly ...

The founder of Sara's Society for Animal Rescue and Adoption, Tracy Frank, shares her inspiring journey of dedication and compassion spanning nearly three decades, with Show host Mitch Stein.  SaraSanctuary.org, located in Seguin, TX, stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to saving animals from abandonment and providing them with a loving sanctuary. She reflects, "No matter how hard this is on its worst day, it's still the best thing I've ever experienced. Starting this sanctuary has given me a fulfillment that I never had in my life before." Tracy's story began during her teaching years, where she witnessed the plight of animals left abandoned on roadsides and by fellow teachers. Fueled by her passion, she founded SaraSanctuary.org, driven by the belief that every animal deserves a chance at life. Rejecting the conventional shelter model of euthanasia, Tracy was inspired by organizations like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, which affirmed her mission of providing refuge without compromise. Throughout the interview, Tracy reflects on the challenges of fundraising, highlighting the constant struggle to meet the sanctuary's $75,000 monthly budget. From grassroots efforts like sending letters to leveraging unconventional methods like partnering with adult websites for donations, Tracy's resourcefulness knows no bounds. Her dedication to securing funds underscores her unwavering commitment to the animals under her care. Tracy's sanctuary is not limited to traditional pets like dogs and cats; it embraces animals of all kinds. With over 700 residents, including 350 pigs, horses, cows, and even ducks, Sara's Society stands as a haven for creatures great and small. Tracy's decision to rescue a diverse range of animals reflects her belief in the inherent worth of all living beings, regardless of species or background. The conversation also covers Tracy's successful partnerships with other rescue organizations, facilitating exchanges of animals to find them suitable homes. Tracy points to the importance of vetting potential partners to ensure alignment in values and practices, underscoring her commitment to the welfare of the animals entrusted to her care. Despite the emotional toll of her work, Tracy remains resilient, drawing strength from her dedicated team and her profound sense of purpose. She candidly shares her coping mechanisms, including medication and a strong work ethic, acknowledging the importance of prioritizing mental health in an often-challenging field. Tracy Frank's journey exemplifies the transformative power of compassion and determination. Through Sara's Society, she continues to make a profound impact on the lives of countless animals, embodying the belief that every creature deserves love, care, and a second chance. As Tracy's story illustrates, the path to creating a better world for animals begins with a single act of kindness.  Follow us on the Twitter: @Nonprofit_ShowSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

The group discusses the various ways in which the sanctuary has helped animals, as well as the challenges they have faced over the years. They also talk about the importance of volunteering and how everyone can help make a difference. The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a place that is really powerful and moving. It is a place where you can laugh, cry, and be awed all at the same time. The Sanctuary is located in Utah and is definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the area. They offer guided tours as well as the opportunity to do volunteer work and even spend the night with some of the animals. We spent a couple of nights at the Sanctuary and our goal was to take home the dogs that either get overlooked because of their appearance or have had some previous trials and tribulations. We wanted to use our experience to actually help where others may not be able to in a short period of time. And we were definitely successful! We had an amazing time and we were able to provide a loving home for some dogs that really needed it. The speakers discuss their recent visit to an animal shelter, where they cleaned cages and played with the animals. They talk about how important it is to take home some of the less adoptable animals, in order to give them a chance at finding a forever home. They also talk about their experience at the cat room, where they were surprised by how loving and affectionate the cats were. They encourage listeners to adopt animals from shelters, and mention that Healthy Pet Products will give a free bag of food to anyone who adopts a dog or cat from this organization. Catvocate Provides Services to At-Risk Cats in Georgia

CEO of Catvocate Lynne Fouraker is in the studio today for the Around Atlanta segment of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast. Take a listen to learn why her organization is the cat's meow as Lynne shares the work she does to advocate for at-risk felines with co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick. Other topics discussed include their partnership with another local animal rescue group and their program for working cats. Fouraker's experience with animal rescue began in 2004 when she became inspired by the passing of an old friend who was involved with a local humane society in Utah. While donating to the rescue organization in honor of her friend, Fouraker was led to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. She began sponsoring animals at the Sanctuary and eventually made a visit to the animal refuge with her husband, which became a yearly occurrence for the two. “In 2007, one of the founders of Best Friends recognized my husband and I as being volunteers on a fairly regular basis and remembered we were from the South. He asked me ‘So what are you doing for the animals locally where you live?' and I thought about it and I said ‘Well, I'm not doing anything, I need to look into that,'” said Fouraker. “My New Years resolution for 2008 was to find someplace where I could volunteer.” After regularly visiting the Sanctuary, Fouraker was motivated to support animals in need local to her in Georgia. She then began volunteering at her local humane society taking photographs and spending time with animals in need of a home to help them find a new owner. Since then, Fouraker became more heavily involved in animal rescue and went on to create Catvocate which supports at-risk cats and kittens located in Jackson County, Georgia. Catvocate is a conduit rescue, unlike traditional rescue groups that foster animals and find homes that can adopt them. Catvocate is dedicated to lowering the euthanasia rate of homeless cats by providing services to rescue cats that are collected by the Jackson County Animal Control. The organization focuses on fundraising, evaluating cats that are people-friendly, and providing cats in need with veterinary attention to assess their health condition. Catvocate partners with Rescue Cats to finds good homes for cats that get along well with people and other animals. “We never let a condition or injury keep us from rescuing a cat if it is an adoptable cat. We believe that somebody out there connected in our rescue partner shares that belief, somebody out there has a home for that cat,” said Fouraker. Catvocate provides information to their rescue partner about cats they find, including its temperament and pictures in need. If their rescue partner chooses to take in the animal based on those details, Catvocate takes the cat from animal control to receive necessary veterinary attention, after which the animal is quarantined for two weeks to prevent the potential spread of any infections or diseases before it is given to Rescue Cats. After passing on the cats to Rescue Cats, Catvocate is given updates on the cats including their adoption process and their new home environment. Occasionally, Catvocate has come across cats that are people-friendly but do not mix well with other cats, which makes it difficult to find a rescue group that will shelter them. To solve this issue, Catvocate has initiated a barn cat program which finds any local organizations such as a  barn, farm, silo, dairy, warehouse or brewery that may need a working cat that is fully-vetted to aid in rodent issues. Catvocate provides adopters of working cats with large cages to place the cat in for at least three weeks until they are used to their new surroundings. In exchange, these cats that typically experience difficulty finding a new home are placed in a safe place to sleep with food and water. To learn more about Catvocate and the services it offers, be sure to listen to the full interview above. You can also visit catvocate.

Everyone Loves Howie Carole writes Howie 3/27/03:   Dear Howie,   Unless I can beam myself there, I won't arrive before noon.  The USDA conference was only a one day thing and I didn't miss any of it.  I just couldn't get an earlier flight back via Orbitz when I scheduled this, without paying 300.00 more.  I would either be spending the day in the hotel lobby or the airport lobby, so it isn't a big deal either way.   You are always the source of good minutes for me.  You make all of the bad ones that came before you just fade away.  I keep thinking of Ana's words when she said that you deserved someone who recognized you for the jewel that you are.  Had I not known the darkness of the past, I might not have seen you shining.  To have missed knowing you would have been the greatest loss I ever could have suffered.  You make everything all right.  You make me happier than I ever thought possible.  I am so excited to be coming home to you!  Love, Carole   Denise Kelly, Burt and Arlene and Craig Brestrup Carole writes Howie 3 Apr 2003 17:20:04 EST    Dear Howie,  Thank you so much for meeting with Alex and Jennifer on my behalf today.  You must have made quite an impression.  Alex was virtually breathless in his admiration of you.  I felt bad that you were working while I was playing tennis and taking the family out to lunch.  When I noted that to my mother, she considered it a moment and then remarked that she couldn't ever remember that sort of a situation occurring in my life.  How rare you are!  I promise not to make a habit of it.   I included the attached photo of you and I in the thank you cards that I sent out to the list you gave me, in case anyone comments on your mustache (or mine).  I hope your session went well and your computer is doing better.  I may get there before 7PM as Mel said the closing date on the contract was wrong and wants me to change it to 30 days out, and re-fax it.     Email From:  Denise Kelly    Hi Carole,  I was given your email by our friends, Burt and Arlene Alimansky.  They told me all about your wonderful sanctuary, which I've already read about last year.   I am also an animal advocate and am co-founder of a group called the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC).  The AWC is a network representatives from avian and animal welfare groups, as well as professionals in the legal, veterinary and conservation community, who are dedicated to the ethical treatment and protection of captive exotic birds.  You can visit our website at avianwelfare.org.   I also work with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary as a representative for their publication, Best Friends magazine, here in New York.  Actually, I think we have another friend in common, Dr. Craig Brestrup, of the Association of Sanctuaries. Craig is a member of our coalition and several of our participants are accredited by TAOS. Craig is a wonderful person and has been very supportive of our efforts.   Irwin, my better half, and I do get to Florida quite a few times a year, and would love to visit your facility.  We have heard nothing but good things about it!  Anyway, I look forward to hearing back from you, as I'm sure we have a lot to talk about.  Bye for now, Denise Kelly   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Kelly McGonigal, PhD, is an author, psychologist and educator. You may know her from her book The Upside of Stress and her Ted talk about stress here: How to Make Stress Your Friend,” which makes the case that social connection is both a natural instinct and a source of resilience in times of stress, started out as a lecture for Stanford’s Introduction to Psychology course. Kelly writes, "My mission, as an author, psychologist, and educator, is to... help each of us find our own strength and the courage to lift one another up. To amplify what is good in humanity, and to support the communities that bring out the best in us.  I believe that science and stories are two of the best ways to inspire self-understanding, empathy for others, and connection with a broader sense of common humanity. Through all my work, I aim to share my own awe about the human condition, whether that’s being amazed by how the brain functions or being elevated by our capacity to transform suffering into meaning. I am a teacher at heart, and all of my books are based on classes I have taught at Stanford University. THE WILLPOWER INSTINCT was based on my popular psychology course “The Science of Willpower,” and THE UPSIDE OF STRESS began as “Living Well with Stress.”  My latest book THE JOY OF MOVEMENT explores how physical exercise can be a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The book is at once a love letter to movement and to human nature, including our remarkable abilities to persist, cooperate, and experience transcendence. It, too, is rooted in my experiences as a teacher—I started leading group exercise classes as a graduate student in psychology, and it continues to be one of the greatest sources of happiness in my life. I am passionate about giving back and helping others do so. Through the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism, I helped create the Stanford Compassion Cultivation Training, a course now taught around the world that helps individuals develop greater empathy, compassion, and social connection. I also take joy in supporting two causes that are especially close to my heart: education and animal rescue. Both of my parents were public school teachers, and my husband and I were married at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. Learn more about some of my favorite non-profit organizations and how you can get involved. As part of my mission to share psychological science with the public, I have enjoyed a wide range of roles, including serving as the psychology consultant for The New York Times Education Initiative, hosting interviews with scientists and authors for Public Radio’s City Arts & Lectures, and appearing on television shows such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Anderson Cooper Show, and CNN’s Vital Signs." ======================  Request to Join the FREE Meredith Atwood Community & Coaching https://meredith-atwood-coaching.mn.co/ ======================  Buy Meredith’s Books: The Year of No Nonsense https://amzn.to/3su5qWp Triathlon for the Every Woman: https://amzn.to/3nOkjiH =======================  Get The InnerU Program! Despite cats clearly being superior to all other beings (at least that's what the cats tell us), sometimes they need a little help from us lowly humans due to injury, disease, or genetic conditions. But how on earth do you get a cat to cooperate with a physical rehabilitation program? Anybody who knows anything about cats, knows that a cat isn't going to do anything he or she doesn't want to, right? WRONG! Listen as professional animal behaviorist Lillian Ciardelli tells the story of Sal, a rescue cat who had a front-limb amputation and hip surgery at the same time due to a trauma! Yes, Sal had a bit of a rough start in life, but Lillian applied her behavior training to the vet's prescribed rehabilitation plan, using Sal's natural  cat instincts and her own creativity for a successful outcome! She examined everything from his play style to what motivates him while being careful to avoid  stress. Turns out cats are highly trainable and benefit from physical rehabilitation after all.Click here to learn more about Lillian and her business, Behave Atlanta, LLC.Click here to read Lillian's article about Sal's rehab including pictures and video!Click here for Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.DisclaimerThe contents of the PetAbilityTM  podcast are for informational purposes only.   The host(s) and their guests make no claims, warranties or representations about the content of these podcasts, or the accuracy, completeness or timeliness of their content. She makes me smile all day long! They can instantly change our mood, and they are such an important part of our lives. I know there are dogs now that are helping military vets and patients in hospitals. Last year during our Gratitude Adventure, we spent a day at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, and believe me, it was a treat to love on the animals over there. Do you have any pets? Francis Battista grew up in metropolitan New York and now lives in a rural part of Utah that most Utahns couldn’t find on a map and have never visited. This self-described misfit helped found the Best Friends Animal Society, operating the largest no-kill animal sanctuary for companion animals in the United States and has become a key thought leader in the no-kill movement. When Best Friends Animal Society was launched, 17 million animals were euthanized in the United States every year. Battista is leading a crusade to “save them all.” Battista will also be sharing his insights at the Social Enterprise and Crowdfunding Conference, which I am organizing, on September 26, 2014. More about the Best Friends Animal Society: Every day, more than 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in America’s shelters simply because they don’t have a safe place to call home. Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. An authority and leader in the no-kill movement since its founding in 1984, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as life-saving programs in partnership with rescue groups and shelters across the country. Since its founding, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from 17 million per year to about 4 million. Best Friends has the knowledge, technical expertise and on-the-ground network to end the killing and Save Them All. Francis Battista Francis Battista Battista’s bio: Francis Battista: Francis Battista is co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society, and today, considered to be one of the foremost thought leaders in animal welfare. Born in 1945 and raised in the New York City metropolitan area, Francis has always been in the company of pets. He studied engineering and physics at NYU and SUNY Albany and started his career working in the family real estate business. In the late 1960’s the calling to discover a more purposeful life led Francis on a journey with a group of friends, some of whom would become the other co-founders of Best Friends Animal Society. Understanding that kindness towards all – animals and humans –is fundamental to a spiritual life, Francis and his friends devoted their energies to healing our collective relationship with animals, beginning with the challenge to end killing companion animals as a method of population control. Francis used his experience in real estate to help locate and acquire the perfect piece of property in Southern Utah that would become the organization’s headquarters. At the time, they had no idea that perfect piece of property would become the nation’s largest sanctuary for abandoned and abused animals and the flagship of the No-Kill movement. Over the years, Francis has worn many hats at Best Friends including co-director of animal care at the Sanctuary. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Francis managed the Best Friends rescue shelters in Tylertown, Mississippi and Metairie, LA. Francis was also involved in the negotiations with federal agencies and courts that brought 22 of Michael Vick’s dogs to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. In 2012, Francis was instrumental in launching No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA), a Best Friends initiative that has reduced shelter deaths from 23,000 to 14,000 in its first two years and is on track to achieve No-Kill status for the city of Los Angeles by 2017. Today Francis takes his crusade to the blogosphere and live speaking appearances. He is a prolific blogger for Best Friends and on the Huffington Post, as well as in animal welfare publications. He gave a TED Talk at TEDx Reno in 2014 and was a presenter at the 2014 Innovation Excellence Cities Tour in New York City and Boston. Francis will also be speaking at the Social Entrepreneurship and Crowdfunding Conference on September 26. “Most immediately, our work is helping the animals and ending shelter killing. But on another level, this is about saving people. It’s about saving our relationship to the animals and the planet.” Francis Battista “Our relationship to the animals begins with an understanding that they are sentient beings. They have their own lives, their own narrative, and their own personal story and being. We should be open and willing to communicate with them, listen to them and respect them.” Francis Battista Co-founder, Best Friends Animal Society, Kanab, Utah francis@bestfriends.org | bestfriends.org
