Welcome!First off! I apologize for the dead air space, I am using a different recording platform that apparently does not like my taste in music :-) And, as you cat lovers can relate to, I had to attend to my cat's needs. :-) This episode explores the term "Treat Motivated" referencing common scientific studies to determine what this really means and if the focus on treat motivation means the study is missing some very important information about our dogs!Secondly, I use the example of a client of a student in the CCBT Diploma Program at the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy to discuss the challenges in using Conditioning Methods with dogs that are not "treat motivated"And, finally, is "treat motivated" an advantage when adopting a dog?Be sure to check out www.instituteofcaninepsychotherapy.com for info! Welcome to Dog Training DisrUPted. Do you get overwhelmed by the amount of conflicting suggestions and advise? You are not alone! Surprisingly, many of those approaches may be effective, and many ineffective - why? Many methods assess behaviors and then implement solutions to address the behavior.CCBT analyzes the situation, determining the reason for the dog's behaivor, based on the goal and thought processes. This episode explores one situation (a dog growling) in four different scenerios, Based on the information we gather, we can determine the reason for the behavior - which is different in each situation, which is important in determining the platform exercises we develop. Put on your thinking cap, or perhaps your detective cap, and join me on a journey in dissecting dog behavior. Dog anxiety often leads to behaviors that results in frustration for pet parents, leading to surrender or euthanasia. There are a plethora of approaches to address it, so how do you choose the best one for you and your dog? Anxiety is an emotion, not a behavior. It is essential to apply a method that acknowledges emotions, taking an approach whereby we do not suppress the emotion, but rather, provides skills to regulate, process, and replace "harmful" emotions with positive ones. In this episode, I introduce Emotional Replacement Therapy. I address common changes that occur as we work our way through the program, and discuss "coping mechanisms" and "impulse control"Find all the episodes on Feedspot, where Dog Training DisrUPted is rated in the top 5 shows in the dog category in Canada: https://blog.feedspot.com/canadian_dog_podcasts/For more info on Billie Groom and Canine CBT, and links to social media:Dog Training, Canine Behavior and Cognition (upwarddogology.com)My Linktree with all my media, presentations, shows, articlesBillie Groom - UPWARD Dogology | Instagram, Facebook | LinktreeHere is the link to the recent article in Psychology Today Mag by Marc Bekoff on Canine CBTDog Training: Perception, Cognition, and Emotions | Psychology TodayBuy My Book! I recently took two puppies in off a reserve and here is what I learned! By understating puppy training and braining , we can better understand how different methods are effective at different stages.Meet Jonesy and Jackson, 3 month old puppies who are very different from each other. How are methods adapted? Why is it important to view training as bonding and harnessing cognitive skills, as opposed to "tick the boxes". Referencing specific examples with these pups, this episode explores operant conditioning and Canine CBT. Dog behaviors associated with aggression and anxiety are caused by many factors, of which cognitive dissonance is rarely discussed, yet has a profound impact, in particular with adolescent and adult dogs, while, perhaps surprisingly, upbringing is not a differentiating factor. This episode covers what it is, common signs/behaviors including examples, what NOT to do - and most importantly, why, and why CCBT is so effective in addressing behaviors stemming from cognitive dissonance. As always, I appreciate your support, questions, feedback. Please feel free to share to help other professionals, pet parents and dogs. If your dog is reactive, nervous, fearful, experiencing change in behavior, or acting unpredictable, I recommend this episode as a starting place. Links mentioned in episode. David Roberts, Licensed Master Social Worker, is an expert in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and has extensive personal experience, claiming "it played a major role in saving my life after my daughter died at the age of 18." Dave and I dive deep into what CBT is and use comparative examples in human and dog behavior and rehabilitation. We discuss the role of mindset, perception, habits, and cognitive appraisal in making decisions. We discuss the difference between CBT and Counter Conditioning, and why CBT is so effective with dogs in different life stages, as with humans. We discuss the benefits of methods not requiring the stimuli to be present or relying on rewards. This episode is sure to inspire, allowing you to see your dog's behavior in a new light. bootsyandangel@gmail.com Podcast - The Teaching Journeys Podcast | Podcast on Spotify Book: When The Psychology Professor Met The Minister: How the woman on the corner of Hunter and Whittier permanently transformed one academic's worldview. eBook : Roberts, Dave, Furino, Patty: Amazon.ca: Kindle Store Big thanks to Open Strum for donating the music clips! Fostering adolescent and adult dogs can be challenging. In this episode, I break down the goals and introduce the 7 step fostering program I have applied with hundreds of dogs and taught to dozens of fosters. Programs for pet parents are different than those of fostering - Why? Because the goal is different! Fostering is not about BEING the best home or addressing behavioral issues that are specific to the foster home, but rather, taking the steps to ensure a successful adoption into the best home for the dog. I use the example of a recent foster couple I helped with their challenging dog. Their goal to address behavioral issues specific to their home life complicated the process of providing the dog with the necessary skills to be happily homed. The UPWARD Dogology 7 step program keeps the goals in the forefront and the success rate high. In this episode, I review these steps, discussing why they are important, and how they eliminate the need for lengthy fostering periods and allow for an easy integration into their new home. In this episode, we discuss enriching dogs' environments. This is a much broader topic than is often acknowledged. Enrichment is important for most species. We all have experienced boredom. It's the birthplace of regrettable ideas. Just remember some of the things you came up with as a teenager when you were bored. Some of them probably got you into trouble. But this is not just about the sins of our youth. Boredom and mental stagnation are rarely good things. Once we stop engaging our minds, we are at higher risk of Alzheimer's Disease and mental decline. Mental stimulation is important for long-term health. This is no different for dogs. Teaching dogs to make good decisions and solve problems doesn't happen through solitary confinement. Engaging dogs on multiple levels is essential for happiness and well-being. It is especially important to provide dogs with mental and physical stimulation when they are kept in closer confinements like crates and kennels. Welcome to Dog Training DisrUPted by UPWARD Dogology!Canine Enrichment is all the rage, especially in shelters and amongst behavioral experts. Yes, another trendy term that seems positive, but is it? Well, like most things, when used to divert from the real issue, or "sell" products and services by promoting them as something they are not, this can lead to frustration with tragic results.Once again, I present a candid, educational view to help you make the right decisions for you and your dog. There is no "one right way" to work with a dog, to train, or to pet parent. Know your options and make educated decisions.Thank you for your support and interest. And for all you do for the dogs. Hello and thanks for joining me!I am guessing most of you are not proponents of methods that take a "dominance" approach. What does this really entail? And how is it different from Alpha and Pack Leader? There are common exercises in dominance training that may not seem as though they would have a negative effect, and, in fact, are part of mainstream dog training. Is going through a door first harmful or simply counterproductive? Can this routine lead to dominance, and will that achieve the goal of addressing unwanted behavior? How do dogs perceive these exercises and the theory of dominance? This episode raises some interesting thoughts on how mainstream dog training can, unintentionally, decrease the bond between you and your dog, and effect the success of your training routine. Or perhaps your dog simply thinks you are not very bright! I then provide some suggestions for exercises to try at home to improve the bond and increase your communication with your dog. Leash walks can be frustrating when dogs are pulling, putting on the brakes, or lolly-gagging. Should you be expected to continuously turn around, or simply allow your dog to sniff everything? Should you be expected to have decompression walks that are really only decompressing for your dog? In this ep I talk about common recommendations, from continuously turning around, standing still, to allowing your dog to sniff and decide the direction (is this a technique?). I talk about different apparatuses designed to prevent pulling, and discuss some pros and cons of some popular ones. I make some suggestions of easy exercises to apply to gain greater focus (no, not treats or the look at me command), and provide suggestions as to how to apply these to your situation and daily life. Leash walking is all about having the skills to communicate and provide calm, clear direction. Your dog's perception of you and the environment determines his or her behavior.NOTE - this is not a training guide. The advice is to be adjusted to your needs and specific situation, and dog. Welcome to the final episode of 2021! This episode was a challenge. So much happened in 2021 in relation to spreading awareness of Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, making connections, collaborating, and learning about the industry. I decided to share, in brief, the pitfalls of the industry, which, for those who listen other episodes, know all too well. Through the closed doors I received from influential orgs, I learned a lot about the underlying mechanics of the dog world, which, not surprisingly, function much like other industries - ego, greed and personal agendas rank high. I took this info and turned it into effective connections and collaborations. In this episode, I introduce you to changemakers whom you may not be aware of because, like myself, they do not follow the industry norm, and they are not afraid to make waves in the better interest of dogs and the people who love them. I wish you all the best in 2022 and, as always, I appreciate your support and all you do for the pets in your care. Enrichment: What, Why and HowOur pets might be domesticated but that doesn't mean they're perfect happy living in an environment catered just to their human's needs! This week, Naomi talks enrichment. What is it and how can we use it to help minimize unwanted pet behaviors? In this episode we discuss: What is enrichment?o A shorthand for designing an enriching environment or providing enriching activities. o Giving an animal the opportunity to behave the way they would in the wild. Eg. Zebras given the environment and things to do “zebra things” o Enrichment is essential for any captive animal Essential for their welfare Greatly affects their behavior towards your home and any other beings living there· What happens to animals in an environment not enriched?o It's akin to solitary confinement Basic physical needs are met They get access to sufficient calories and hydration on a schedule not determined by them They have a place to sleep and eliminate but without any personal choice o There is a reason solitary confinement is a brutal punishment Just getting your basic physical needs met is not enough Having no behavior choice in accessing those needs is stressful Talking to self because no one else to talk to Pacing because nowhere else to walk Increased aggression Captive animals in non-enriched environments experience similar things. Unenriched Environmentso Our homes are designed to enrich US. Access to basic human needs Human comfort Human entertainment o If our homes only enrich us, our pets are in a prison-like environment o Unenriched environments lead to “behavioral seepage” Pet's version of muttering, pacing and snapping o When not occupied, pet's will seek out opportunities to express the behaviors not promoted by their environment Dog's need to scavenge might start rummaging in trash for scraps Cats' need for nail maintenance might scratch sofa The basics of enriching your pet's environment.o Learn what your pet needs give them access to their physical needs like health, hygiene, nutrition, and exercise give appropriate outlets for instinctual behavior specific to their species and breed allow them to exert some control over their environment, to choose the most desirable outcomes o Allow them the freedom to safely choose how to access these needs Three-step plan for enriching your pet's environment.o Watch your pets Write down their behavior for three days Take notes but don't interfere with their behavior unless they are doing something dangerous Give them a choice between two acceptable behavior instead of multiple “iffy” options Take notes of any “misbehavior” o Choose one behavior that you are always asking your pet to stop, are redirecting or punishing. These are behaviors your animal needs to perform in a more appropriate way. Set up the environment to provide alternatives. o Monitor the new activity/environment. Change if necessary. Welcome to our first mid-month episode where I provide insight and info on dog behavior, followed by an guest speaker who is in an expert in their field. Let's talk about Anxiety Rehabilitation! Conventional methods, ones common in mainstream dog training, adhere to the principles of Conditioning Methodologies. They are intentionally designed to teach and encourage expected behaviors, and prevent unwanted behaviors, making them great for puppies and some dogs. But what happens when dogs already feel fear or anxiety and their behaviors are already established? Well, this is where cognitive behavioral therapy shines! Find out why.Meet Brad Malin, owner of Companion CBD, the only CBD product with a veterinarian on the team! Brad has a background in health and has worked closely with veterinarians. In this episode, Nikki and Britteny discuss the different types of aggressive behavior and why many dogs are exhibiting these. They can be seen on leash, off leash, at home or in public. They may be towards other dogs, people, or objects such as bicycles and cars. The motivations may be different than what you initially believe and understand that is the most important aspect of dealing with the behavior. Not handled correctly or using aversive techniques will only increase the aggressive behavior and will begin to occur with little to no warning. Don't let this be you and your dog. Listen now to begin understanding more about the way your dog is feeling! Part 1 of Part 2 as next week we will discuss the best ways to help your dog if he is exhibiting aggressive behaviors.

This ep. is all about reading and understanding our dogs, respecting their needs, and adapting to their personalities and they grow and change. Liz Murdoch is an animal communicator with a passion for helping people bond and understand their pet on a whole new level. This is a great chat full of surprising tidbits of info.I follow this with three examples of feedback I received from the challenge from last month's ep. (inserting command based exercises on a leash walk that require your feet to move when the dog does not, and unteaching the Sit command). This leads to some surprising results for two dogs with different kinds of anxiety and one silly dog! I then use a client example to show the benefits of providing dogs with options. By pre-determining the end goal, we often limit the ability for dogs to overcome fears and prevent ourselves from enjoying the company of our dog. UPWARD Dogology allows us to provide skills to read the dog, adapt to individual dogs' personalities and progress as the dog progresses. A listener, who is a scientist, asked a great question - "Can positive reinforcement training reach the cognitive side of the brain?" Great question. I had to think about this and am excited to share my thoughts. We then explore Canine Enrichment exercises, their benefits, and if they reach the cognitive side of the brain.I then use an example provided by a professor as to what CBT is and how it is like making soup!I was recently a guest on a tv show where I provided a tip that combines R+ exercises and CBT to help integrate a rescued dog into your home. Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months. In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.Memory, Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies. If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible. NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist or a certified dog trainer to understand the info in this episode. With the increased popularity of Balanced Training, corrections is a hot topic in the behavioral world. Rewards are the basis of Positive Reinforcement Training. Because of this focus on rewards and corrections, many trainers and behaviourists are "missing the forest for the trees". Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which UPWARD Dogology is grounded in, uses rewards to establish the platform, but is not dependent on rewards or correction to change perception and in turn change behaviour. Is one method better that the other? Well, that depends on many factors. For a deeper look into these topics and methods, please check out the episodes in seasons 1 and 3. Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing. Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences. Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology. Thanks to Danielle Bourjeaurd for the great music clips! The SnipPets are tidbits of info, tips, “what's trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related. And then, due to an incident, afraid to go on neighborhood walks. The SnipPet Piece is a true or false segment, that touches on three topics 1) are emaciated dogs, when homed, more likely to be in need of impulse control training than other rescued dogs? 2) Is the honey-moon period a myth? 3) How effective is the gentle leader? Praise? Treats? Positive Reinforcements? Positive Correction/Punishment? These are reactive in nature and grounded in Operant Conditioning (confused? take a listen to the earlier episodes in this 4 part mini-series) . It is time to learn how to establish the platform, what teaching opportunities are, why opportunity driven rewards are different, and why transferable skills are essential. Learn the core tools of UPWARD Dogology and how they all work together to reach the cognitive side of the brain and effectively work with dogs. To avoid that "deer-in-the-headlights-look" as you venture through the mini-series, it is a good idea to hear how Billie's learning journey lead to the creation of UPWARD Dogology. This is not your average learning journey - no certifications, no set game plan, and no rules. Why no certifications? Because all the certifications are for positive reinforcement trainers, and Billie is not that!
