We have to come clean...a recent study by Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute says that research participants scored an average of 94% on memory accuracy. This high level of accuracy was observed regardless of the participants or the time that had elapsed since the event occurred. However, we have 6% to work with and add to memory stacking!Memory stacking is all about filling our children's memories with good and beauty from their upbringing and their family, and not memories of "we-nevers or I-nevers" or fighting with siblings...or being forced to *gasp* do chores ALLLLL the time. All jokes aside, the human brain has a major slant toward the negative. It's a protective mechanism, and it has an important job...but it shows up even it when it isn't needed. It's easier than it should be to get to the end of the year and question whether or not you've even done anything this year. It's easy for kids to just complain about what they didn't get to do, or what they don't have...and it to REALLY FEEL like that's true...even when we know it isn't.So …. in comes memory stacking...Recognize & Create Memory-Stacking Moments (02:20)Document Your Memory-Stacking Moments (05:50)Strew the Memories Everywhere (08:40)Use our Homeschool Plan Like A Mother to brainstorm memory-stacking ideas and give them a home. Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 13:25

I was listening to a podcast by Jon Acuff the other day and he talked about how goals go through seasons...it got me thinking, because instantly it made me think of how children and parenting go through seasons, and so do our homeschools. All the time we envision and expect to find that perfect groove or perfect routine, the one where everything flows...once we JUST crack the code...Where we find this perfect groove, that's perfectly within our control, and nothing stressful or hard will happen.Life with kids is just too darn interesting to be like that though. And our homeschooling goes through seasons. Sometimes, it really needs to go through a "DONE" season. We typically hit the ground running in the summer or fall...we drink the kool-aid...we get that curriculum addiction high...we get ...Then our season changes as weather shifts and holidays arrive...The new year arrives usually with a new commitment and vigor for learning and routine, which carries us into spring. As spring weather and activities are in full swing, I feel myself slipping more and more into needing a 'done' day to look forward to.Deadlines are beneficial because they provide structure, direction, and motivation to complete tasks efficiently. What did I say was important at the beginning of the year, that has entirely fallen off the bandwagon?A break doesn't have to be the entire summer long. Our friend Katie runs an epic virtual Life Skills Summer Camp from June 9-13, where all the learning happens without any need for curriculum planning or oversight from parents. Your children watch really short, kid-directed videos, and always have a hands-on mission they carry out after. Life skills like cooking, sweeping, making deposits, creating business plans, and taking charge of their own homeschool days (I bet you'd never guess who made that one). In short.. You might just need a 'done' day in your life and homeschool this yearThe break doesn't have to be long. You can recharge, plan, dream, or just drink coffee. The break can still hold learning...or not.And you will ALL benefit from it. So go choose a date for your done day. How ideal does it sound to have a teen that meal plans for your family...all the way though from looking at sales....to choosing good meals...to then making said meals...and even cleaning up after them...Here's the thing...Moms suck at delegating...our brains are hard wired to see all the things that need to be done, to do the things the way we want or need them done, and do it as quickly & efficiently as possible. So it comes down more to building the skill of delegation in motherhood...and the art of making those delegations meaningful and fulfilling work....much more so than it does just getting our kids to do stuff that we see needs to be done....or ridiculously, expecting our kids to just do things that need to be done.Story: Overwhelmed with to do list...Bper helping and tackling things once he was given autonomy and I released control of the outcome. That's what leads to these pay days that serve our entire family, and especially our individual children...because we're raising adults.Choose what to Delegate (04:35)Make it Meaningful (07:35)Clarity is Kindness (11:05)How This Changes Things (14:30)Find the complete podcast notes on our website. To find The Deliberate Day on Instagram, click here.Looking for items shared in our podcasts?! I don't know about you, but I'm already a yes mom. I say yes to 1,000 requests a day. Neither my kids nor I needed me to find more ways to say yes each day or to create a day where I give in to every whim my kids have, but it did make an adorable, albeit impractical, movie. What I really needed for my sanity- and I would say, for my family! —was a day when I could say no, guilt-free, to the extras we're always squeezing in and instead say yes to the things on my to-do list that weren't red-tag items. It might be a little brutal if you don't know the theory behind red-tag items, but you'll get the reference to motherhood after I explain it...A Triage Tag (01:50)Setting the Stage (03:17)And beautiful mommas, never forget…YOU are doing beautiful work!Find the complete podcast notes on our website. To find The Deliberate Day on Instagram, click here.Looking for items shared in our podcasts?! Or worse...feeling guilt over everything we HAVEN'T accomplished. We *know* we've spent HOURS on math, language arts, and allllll the activities, field trips, and projects, but it's still completely normal to *feel* like we haven't done enough...   Enter the profit and loss statement...Traditionally, a profit and loss statement includes a business's total revenue, expenses, gains, and losses, arriving at net income for a specific accounting period. But put your teacher glasses on and it really makes sense to do the same for our homeschools.Gains (02:45)Expenses (05:00)Losses (08:10)Net (11:35)The Homeschool Plan Like a Mother Guide is FULL of questions like these that will help you. Start with the narratives (you don't have to fill in the whole thing, JUST do the narratives). Finally, share this with a friend (and fill out the narratives together!) Let us know how it goes! She lives in New Zealand in her House Bus and 'road-schools' her kids as they travel and explore their beautiful country. She's a lover of holistic health & natural remedies, tiny living, dark chocolate, reading, being adventurous, all things pregnancy, birth & motherhood, especially in the context of God's amazing design…But First (01:05)The Radiant Buslife Family (02:30)A Calling (04:30)Bus Life (05:55)Homeschool Space & Rhythm (08:35)Meals as an Anchor in the Day (11:10)Curriculum, Curriculum, Curriculum (12:45)Incorporating Faith (18:40)Shabbat (21:10)Extracurriculars (28:00)Deciding When to Go (31:10)Homeschooling Fear & Flex (33:40)A's to Our Q's (38:00)Where to Find Maddy Worthington (46:15)Find the complete podcast notes on our website. To find The Deliberate Day on Instagram, click here.Looking for items shared in our podcasts?! Have you ever considered what homeschooling might look like in another country?  Here in the U.S., laws can vary dramatically from state to state, and so can opportunities for learning and enrichment.  Can you imagine how that might look on an international scale? Well, our guest, Jenni Cassidy can!  She's a wife, mother to 7 (including 5 graduates), and she lives and homeschools her youngest two children in the UK!  She's also the co-director of Dumb Ox Learning AND she's a consultant for Mother of Divine Grace!Let's Give it a Go (01:00)Homeschooling in Austria (04:30)Homeschooling in the U.K. (06:35)Traveling (09:25)Mother of Divine Grace (12:50)Our Q's (16:30)More from Dumb Ox Learning (30:45)More about Jenni Cassidy There is another homeschool mom just like Jenni, a fellow mother of 7 and Mother of Divine Grace consultant, who Jenni met in Austria.  They discovered that to continue with further education in the U.K., children need to do the exams that kids do in school (which homeschoolers really don't want to do).  So, Helen (the co-owner of Dumb Ox Learning), discovered that if you have an American high school diploma and a combination of AP courses and/or SAT scores, you CAN be accepted into a university in the U.K.  Many people are unaware of this!  Helen began teaching AP classes, and it just took off from there!  Jenni takes care of the artistic side of the business, and Helen does some of the teaching (and they've recruited other teachers).  Starting in September (of what will be their second full year), Dumb Ox Learning will be offering 10 AP courses, they offer some GCSE's, SAT prep courses, and enrichment courses (for supplements).  All the teachers are Catholic (although the AP courses are secular).Dumb Ox Learning includes a mix of both international teachers and students.  Book clubs begin as young as 5 years old, and other classes go up from there.  To learn more and see which classes will be offered this fall head to Dumb Ox Learning.  Check out Dumb Ox Learning on Instagram.Remember sweet momma...You are doing beautiful work!Find the complete podcast notes on our website. To find The Deliberate Day on Instagram, click here.Looking for items shared in our podcasts?!
