Rather than "another 'thing' we have to do," our spiritual gifts feel very natural - even supernatural - to us, and are meant to be discerned and used in the context of our vocations and duties and stations in life. "In keeping with their vocations, the demands of the times and the various gifts of he Holy Spirit, the apostolate [ministry] assumes the most varied forms. Grace [charis] is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts [charismata] that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning "favor," "gratuitous gift," "benefit." Whatever their character - sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues - charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. Sonja Corbitt tells her story of conversion from the Southern Baptist Church and her eventual journey into the Lay Carmelites. She describes what attracted her to the Carmelite spirituality, what it means to be a Lay Carmelite, and how it has helped her in her striving for holiness.

Like all the sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. “This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord” (CCC 1511; Mark 6:13; Jas. 5:14-15). The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for “this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, ‘He took our infirmities and bore our diseases’” (Matt. 8:17).   Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! Have you been sifted? Are you being sifted? Every Christian is sifted. But when we have turned back, we must strengthen our brothers and sisters. The fire that fell from God’s presence onto the Old Testament altar is the same fire spoken of in the NT as the fire of purgatory which purifies, or sanctifies, us now on earth or after death (in the absence of mortal sin). Popes Gregory and Benedict XVI, along with such mystic Saints as Catherine of Genoa, Faustina, and John Paul II, have said the all-consuming fire of God’s presence, the fire of purgatory, and the fire of hell are the same fire: Trials on earth are bitter fire for the sinner, even as they purify the person of God. Life’s “fiery trials,” then, are the all-consuming, jealous fire of God probing and purifying us deliberately, deeply, and intimately, just as the altar fire once did in the OT sacrifices. If we offer them to God willingly in Communion with Jesus’ Cross, they contribute to our salvation to the degree that we can be wholly holy at death. When our trials are viewed this way, they become our sacred offerings of love, offered in participation in Jesus’ Cross. They “save” us. In early Judaism,

God revealed Himself in a particular time, to a particular race of people, at a particular geographical location. Just like He did in the times and people of the scriptures, God wants to speak to us through our own time, work, relationships, and geographical location. But to understand His ways with us, we must understand His ways with them. For that, we must know something of the when and where and through whom it all happened. We must be able to visualize the places, because the people and time and land constitute the arena in which God chose to uniquely speak, act, and intervene. Remembering that you are in His presence, take a spiritual inventory of the "good fruit": love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. What comes to mind? Franciscan - Take a field trip this week to a vineyard, orchard, or vegetable or flower garden; what do you notice about growth? What will happen to the fruit you see? If there is no fruit, what happened to the fruit that was once present? What would you do with a plant that did not and would never bear fruit? (CCC 2779) The purification of our hearts has to do with paternal or maternal images, stemming from our personal and cultural history, and influencing our relationship with God. God our Father transcends the categories of the created world. To impose our own ideas in this area "upon him" would be to fabricate idols to adore or pull down. To pray to the Father is to enter into his mystery as he is and as the Son has revealed him to us. As best you can, identify the generational wounds in your family tree. Confess your own sin patterns and those of your family tree. Take authority over your family, as is your right, your promise, and your inheritance (the "covenant" in the verses above) in Christ. Have a Mass said for the generational wounds in your immediate family and your family tree. Pray this prayer for healing by Fr. John H. Free all living and dead members of my family tree, including those in adoptive relationships, and those in extended family relationships, from every contaminating form of bondage. By your loving concern for us, heavenly Father, and by the shed blood of your precious Son, Jesus, I beg you to extend your blessing to me and to all my living and deceased relatives. Heal every negative effect transmitted through all past generations, and prevent such negative effects in future generations of my family tree. I symbolically place the cross of Jesus over the head of each person in my family tree, and between each generation; I ask you to let the cleansing blood of Jesus purify the bloodlines in my family lineage. Set your protective angels to encamp around us, and permit Archangel Raphael, the patron of healing, to administer your divine healing power to all of us, even in areas of genetic disability. Give special power to our family members' guardian angels to heal, protect, guide and encourage each of us in all our needs. Let your healing power be released at this very moment, and let it continue as long as your sovereignty permits. In our family tree, Lord, replace all bondage with a holy bonding in family love. And let there be an ever-deeper bonding with you, Lord, by the Holy Spirit, to your Son, Jesus. Let the family of the Holy Trinity pervade our family with its tender, warm, loving presence, so that our family may recognize and manifest that love in all our relationships. Please try very hard to look beyond the person through whom this experience comes to the invitation beneath it. The experience feels negative because it involves the emotions associated with our wound, but this is a gift, I promise. Spend some time discerning what you feel, the patterns in the emotions, and write down any memories that surface (a free journal page is available to the right). In your journal or on your journal page (get a free page to the right), write down what you believe the Holy Spirit is saying to you through this verse about your behavior patterns: Lord, this is what happened in my last pop quiz... This is what I think you are telling me about my behavior... But I worry about... My fears about my behavior patterns and emotional vomit are... I need your help here... Entrust (May it be done to me according to your word!) Lord, I believe I can STOP. Holy Spirit, please help me by reminding me to practice STOP before I sin. Guardian angel, please stand guard at the door of my mouth and behavior and bring STOP to mind when I need it. Thank you for answering my prayer. .
