Shakespeare is not the source of the phrase "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." But don't tell that to Bill Jemas. Walk silently through the halls. Keep your head down. Don't talk back. Keep your job. Keep your job. Keep your job. The rains will come. Just wait. And don't talk back. "...and where would we be without a laugh?"
Join us for this latest installment of Cape or Cap, where we dive deep into X-Men Origins: Wolverine! This week, we're kicking off our "Ryan & Hugh Road Trip" visiting all the stops we felt led to their big 2024 blockbuster together Deadpool & Wolverine. First stop: X-Men Origins: Wolverine—the explosive prequel that explores the beginnings of everyone's favorite adamantium-infused mutant, Wolverine. We'll break down the plot, dissect the characters, and tackle the big questions: Is this good storytelling? How does it compare to other films, comics, and larger narratives? What was happening behind the scenes during the creation of this production and after its release? And as always, is this a "cape" or a "cap"?01:13:46 Cape or Cap VerdictReferenced Materials: Origin (alternatively known as Wolverine: Origin or Origin: The True Story of Wolverine) by Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada and Paul Jenkins, and illustrated by Andy Kubert and Richard IsanoveSupport Cape or Cap by donating today. It's time to chew over a big beatdown bonanza as Paul and Al look at the climactic clash between the Thunderbolts and Graviton in issues 56-58, and take the time to say goodbye to Marvel's breakout character of 1998. Then it's time for something completely different, as one of the least fondly remembered gimmicks of the Bill Jemas era rears its very quiet head in issue 59.
If the Iron Age begins with the Crisis/Dark Knight/Watchmen trifecta, where does it end? In this episode, we propose a turning point: Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. The brainchild of controversial publisher Bill Jemas, the Ultimate line sought to make longrunning superheroes more accessible for moviegoing audiences, but who could have guessed the decompressed storytelling and de-emphasis on continuity would lead to a brand new Marvel? (Or a brand NuMarvel?) We'll cap our first six months of exploring the Iron Age by discussing our thoughts on how and why the goals and aims of mainstream comic books changed in the age to follow.

After a brief week hiatus, the podcast ups the ante on cringeworthy comics, or cringe-tastic if you prefer, with this week's entry. Marville is truly a sight to behold. In a spectacularly poorly written comic, the president of Marvel, at the time Bill Jemas, attempts to take on the creative team at his own company. Jemas constructs an experiment to see if he can outsell Peter David and Ron Zimmerman by writing his own comic. Although the comic is billed as a parody of the industry, it is so poorly written that any humor is lost in an incomprehensible mess. Who will win the UDecide at Marvel? Well, you already know the answer to that, but listen in as MMP discusses Marville!
Here it is, the comic so controversial it made George Clooney drop out of playing Nick Fury in movies and got Marvel publisher Bill Jemas fired! Or at least, that's what people say about Fury, Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson's six-issue limited series from 2001 published by Marvel's mature-readers MAX imprint. Justin takes a look at the story behind the splashy headline and why it might be wise to bring a bit of skepticism--or at least a sense of perspective--to this juicy rumor. This episode is labeled Explicit because...well, it's a Garth Ennis comic, it kind of has to be, right? Also discussed in this episode: How to use a parental advisory to market your comic books, Francis Fukuyama and Star Trek VI, and Stan Lee actually says something negative in public about a Marvel comic.

Superheroes don't kill supervillains...except for the ones who do. But it's a conceit of the genre that even if some heroes cross this line, they at least acknowledge the line exists. In this episode, regular host Justin Zyduck takes a break from critiquing specific comics to discussing the trope of the "code against killing" with returning guest Jim Cannon. They discuss the origins and general reasons for this rule of thumb—both philosophical and practical—and about Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, and Captain America specifically. ALSO DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: The legal ramifications of Indiana Jones' activities, a definition of "kindergarten morality" by former Marvel honcho Bill Jemas, John Byrne's storytelling hand grenades, the trial of the Flash, and Xena: Warrior Princess.
In the year 2000, the comic book Captain Marvel belonged to Genis-Vell, a novice superhero trying to to live up to his father's name and keep up the momentum gained by his appearances in the popular Avengers Forever series. But series writer Peter David may have been more interested in chronicling the sitcom antics of Genis' odd-couple partner, longtime Hulk supporting character Rick Jones. David and artist ChrisCross' Captain Marvel (vol. 4) is fondly remembered by fans as a great series cut down in its prime, but does it hold up? Genis is headed back to comic store shelves this month in a new miniseries, and to mark the occasion, regular host Justin Zyduck and guest Jim Cannon revisit the original. Also discussed in this episode: PAD's possible similarities with Garth Merenghi, an unnecessarily elaborate scheme involving the Wendigo, a potshot at Wild Wild West that's taken on a strange resonance 22 years later, angling for Tom Brevoort's job, and the unsettling possibility that Bill Jemas might have been right about this series all along.

THIS IS IT!!! The series that Zimmermonth has been leading up to is finally here, as hosts Nik and Bruno delve to the depths of human incompetence and subject themselves to the depraved ramblings of former Marvel president Bill Jemas not one, but TWICE! That's right - we recorded our episode for 2002's Marville twice due to technical difficulties, and we did it all for you. So sit back and recoil in horror, dear listeners, as we flay the skins off of our backs in an attempt to recapture what was good about the initial recording while staving off the inevitable madness that comes from prolonged exposure to works as evil as this. Milestones are important. For example, if the human race is still around in 500 years, nobody is going to care who won The Grammy's in 2148. However, people will think "Who won the Grammy for Best Song of the Year for 2000," look up the information, and find that the collaboration between Santana and Rob Thomas produced the winning song, "Smooth." They will hear the song and exclaim "OF COURSE THIS IS TIMELESS!" Well, we want to adhere to those values at Comics Talk Comics, so we refuse to let an episode of Marville be our Issue 50. We are currently working on that much-more bomb-ass episode, but for now we have...this. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Matt Moseley come together to review and discuss Marville #5. We learn more about the secret that Bill Jemas has decided to reveal to the world. I'll leave you with this tidbit from the comic: "Jesus was the first super hero." That is both something in this comic book and something that needs to be on a t-shirt. twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook Page - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page
We keep on trucking and refuse to quit: Marville #4 continues to amaze us. The comic book actually decided to swerve us and become a scientific text about evolution, Jesus, dinosaurs, and Wolverine-Namor. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley (who keeps insisting that this isn't worth it BECAUSE HE'S PROBABLY RIGHT) embark on another adventure into the world created by ex-President of Marvel, Bill Jemas. It's difficult to put into words the thoughts we have about Marville #4, but after much heavy drinking...well, we still don't know. Also, it's worth noting that we lost the last few minutes of the podcast, but it can be summed up as such: This is a bad comic. Please don't read this. It's like A Serbian Film; I know you're thinking "Naw, man, it can't be that bad." Trust us, it really is. twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook Page - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page
Whats Up Pizza's!? I know what your thinking: Hey! This isn't a full blown episode of the Videogame BANG!?! And you are correct! This weeks show has an awesome guest that we had to make a slight production schedule change, which meant that this weeks show will be slightly delayed. There was a lot to cover here with Mr. Jemas and he allowed us to pick his brain on a cavalcade of interesting geeky topics about his time at Marvel, his influence on their current state of business, as well as some exciting new things that Take-Two Interactive has lined up in the world of comics starting with a new take on the Night of the Living Dead.
