Episode 63 - Murdock and Marvel: 2002 Part 2 The world was a dangerous and frightening place, and America was trying to come to terms with how to move forward, both internally and on the world stage.  And comics showed a lot of that anxiety.  But even so, 2002 was a big year for all involved in the comics world, as sales of actual honest to goodness comic books actually rose 10% this year to 230 Million dollars, the first time that the industry had seen that occur since 1993, when comic sales had peaked at around 850 Million.  And even as traffic in stores was increasing, Hollywood was starting to understand how to make comic properties work on the screen, both small and large.    This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2002.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances:  Daredevil #27-38, Daredevil: Yellow #6, Paradise X: Heralds #1-2, Elektra #6, Giant Size Mini-Marvels: Starring Spidey #1, Marvel Knight: Millennial Visions #1, Peter Parker: Spider-Man #39 and 41, Essential Marvel Team-Up #1, Paradise X #0-5, Marvel Knight #2-6, Marvel Knights Double Shot #1 and 4, Amazing Spider-Man #2, Ultimate Spider-Man Special #1, Order #5-6, Spider-Man/Daredevil #1, Marville #2 along with Marvel Masterworks: The Submariner #1 and Daredevil: Yellow, Fantastic First, Life and Death of Captain Marvel graphic novels  Writing: Brian Michael Bendis (#27-38)   Pencils: Alex Maleev (#27-37), Manuel Gutierrez (#38)  Inks: Alex Maleev (#27-37), Manuel Gutierrez (#38)  The year for Matt Murdock and Daredevil begins with a 6-part story called Underboss that began in December 2001. In that story we see a bombing attempt on Matt Murdock's life just outside of the courthouse and we see Sammy Silke and several of the Kingpin's other bosses repeatedly stab the kingpin leave him dying on the floor.  So, who put a hit out on Matt Murdock and who is this Sammy Silke who rallied Kingpin's underlings against him? We start to get answers about this over the next 5 books through flashbacks while the story continues forward. Silke is the son of a crime boss in Chicago who needed to get out of town. He came to New York and went to work for the Kingpin – but when the Kingpin wouldn't let him put a hit on Matt Murdock – He caught wind of Murdock's seemly open secret within the Kingpin network and set in motion a plan to take out Murdock and Kingpin with the help of Kingpin's son – Richard.  Vanessa Fisk finds out her husband has been stabbed and in critical condition (and not killed as reports claim). She goes to New York and despite objections from his doctor, wants Kingpin taken to the airport and flown out of the country. She also orders those that betrayed Kingpin to be killed -including her son Richard whom she visits and kills herself.   Underboss ends with Silke, fearing for his life, turning himself into the FBI and asking for protection. When the FBI refuse, he tells them Murdock's secret identity.    From there, things start to really go crazy for Matt Murdock. An FBI agent, needing some cash, sells Murdock's secret to the Daily Globe (the Bugle's rival paper) and it's ran as a front-page story and a media circus descents on Murdock's brownstone.   Ben Urich and Peter Parker tell J. Jonah Jameson the DD secret identity story is a hoax but both refuse to tell him who DD really is; Foggy tries to get Matt to give up his life as DD. Seeing the story, Mr. Hyde shows up and starts destroying Murdock's house before Daredevil and Spider-Man can intervene.  After some time away, Matt Murdock holds a press conference denying he's Daredevil. We'll jump into more detail about that during this week's spotlight.  After a rooftop chat with Elektra at the urging of Black Widow, it looks like things will be settle with the Daily Globe after Daredevil visits the FBI agent who gave up his secret, but then the Globe owner Rosenthal nixes the deal because Murdock was being so smug about the agreement.  The year ends with part 1 of the next named storyline, The Trail of the Century, which we'll talk about in 2003.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #36 October 2002 “One Hundred Percent Untrue” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Big Box Office does not necessarily translate to big bucks at the comic shop. I begin this episode reflecting on my sister Anna, whose presence and influence in my life have grown more meaningful with time. Her quiet wisdom has deepened my understanding of connection and purpose, revealing lessons I only truly began to appreciate in recent years. From there, I introduce Che Marville—a modern-day healer and visionary. Che's work centers on reconnecting us to the deeper energies that bind us, cutting through the noise of ego, power, and material distractions. She masterfully blends ancient wisdom, the rhythms of nature, and the teachings of shamans, reminding us how profoundly relevant these truths remain in our fast-paced world. This episode invites you to rethink what truly matters. Che's message is simple yet powerful: our worth isn't defined by our accomplishments but by the essence of who we are. She encourages us to nurture meaningful connections, tune into the whispers of the world around us, and rediscover the beauty of simply being, a pathway to a better world that starts with how we see ourselves and each other.

In a spectacularly poorly written comic, the president of Marvel, at the time Bill Jemas, attempts to take on the creative team at his own company. Jemas constructs an experiment to see if he can outsell Peter David and Ron Zimmerman by writing his own comic. Although the comic is billed as a parody of the industry, it is so poorly written that any humor is lost in an incomprehensible mess. Who will win the UDecide at Marvel? Well, you already know the answer to that, but listen in as MMP discusses Marville!

Today's guest, Leah Marville, TV Host, model and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Barbados World 2009. When Leah Marville lost her father at a young age, all she could think of was supporting her mother in Saint James, Barbados. When a person is living life in survival mode, many of the choices they make are unconscious. It is only by processing our pain that we can hear our inner voice and begin to live in alignment with it. The choices Leah made to pick up modeling and eventually get a law degree were all based on survival. Along the way she did amazing things like win Miss Barbados and start a charity, making her life look perfect from the outside. However, one day she realized that she was not fulfilled and undertook a deep therapy program. All of this led to her starting Life and Lemonade TV, a catalog of interviews and stories of incredible people who show us, example after example, that life's lemons can always be turned into lemonade. In this episode, you'll hear the full story of Leah's transition from survival to intentionality. We also talk to her about the value of leaning into the emotions we feel and the growth that comes with taking a leap of faith into the unknown. Be sure to tune in today!

Matt sits down with Worn founder Bryan Marville. Worn is a performance sock brand that's pioneered its own proprietary fabric blend to conquer some of the common complaints. I'm sure it's safe to say we've all had a favorite pair of socks' that became a saggy, loose, uncomfortable disappointment. When it comes to athletic performance this isn't something you'd take lightly. Your feet are a complex part of your body, and if not taken care of properly can cause a lot of ailments. Worn founder Bryan Marville recognized this as something that needed to be addressed. In Fact, it was enough to get him to jump from his career in marketing to kick-starting a company dedicated to bridging the complexities and nuances of performance footwear with the only buffer between your shoes and your feet. For a long time socks become a forgotten factor while performance shoes and boots get all the glory. Worn aims to create socks that are just as advanced in foot protection as the high-end footwear you find on the market today. In this episode of ReddyYeti | Built On Passion, Bryan Marville shares a bit about how he developed Worn's proprietary Arrowool, some challenges that come with being a young company, and how he transitioned from being immersed in the marketing world to developing a product-driven brand.

Marville: First up we will be dining on the delectable delights of Marville. Marville are a brilliant two piece playing unrelenting rock and roll. They formed in 2009 and are formed of the powerful riffs and vocals of Ashley Kerley and complimented by the wild thrashings of Doug Palmer. They have released two records ‘Vayan con Dios’ in 2013 and followed up in 2018 with ‘Terra Alpha’. Their music is damn to the point, no fuss and no goddamn muss. It’s direct and hits its mark every time. The riffs compel you to move and with big splashing cymbals it produces a sound that really delivers. Ash can reel you in as she spits out the lyrics with venom before unleashing with a roar to kick a track into overdrive. They are a dynamic live act that hits the stage with intensity and loves to take the audience along for a ride. But don’t make my word for it listen for yourselves. For Episode 271 recorded live at the 4ZZZ Carpark on the 30th of March 2018. Sweater Curse: Sweater Curse have been on a bit of a crazy ride over the last 2 years and have put in the hard yards to be seen as one of the most promising acts in the country. They burst onto the scene in 2017 with a track called Fell Asleep which showcased their particular sound of indie rock, but while it was often imitated, this sounded fresh and goddamn exciting. They are comprised of Chris on guitar and vocal duties, Monica on bass and vocals and Rei on the drums. They have backed up their buzz with an intense live act that has been refined after years of playing as much as they could. They were featured on major stages, bills and festivals around the country and have built an impressive following. They play a brand of indie rock that is engaging and gets you grooving but also makes you focus on the lyrics that you end up hanging on. The way the vocals intertwine and tell a story accompanied by really tight drumming and instrumentation you can see how they have consistently delivered on stage. Their first EP came out on the 1st of March of this year 2019, and we can only expect good things from these local legends. They hit the 4ZZZ Carpark on the 30th of March 2018.

If you've been listening to the Big Idea Podcast for the last few months then you'll have heard me raving about today's guest for quite some time. Neville Wright is the founder of Kiddicare.com, a nursery retailer that Neville started with his wife Marilyn in 1974.  But don't be fooled into thinking this is your usual "and then I made £100 million" story - we go deep into the early years of Neville's journey, focusing on how he took 37p and borrowed his Dad's ladder to go from "a beggar to chairman of the board" in over afternoon. Neville isn't a superhuman. He hasn't done anything that you or I couldn't do ourselves given a decent work ethic, some business acumen and 40 years ahead of us. If you're looking for the blueprint for almost guaranteed success, this is it. There's no gimmicks, no "gaming of the system", no hustling or cheating his way to win. Neville got to the very top of his industry by always looking for a win/win solution at every opportunity, and by really looking after his customers and his staff. We talk a lot about Neville's book "The Answer is Yes, now what is the question?", which I honestly believe is the best autobiography I've read in several years - it's inspirational, without the level of disconnect that the average man usually feels.  If you want to succeed in business or marketing, then the answers you seek are in here - you just need to know "what is the question?" Issue 50 is still coming along, but we needed to finish this arc. There was a serious debate to start something else before rounding out our journey. But did the Donner Party give up on their trek? Did Burk and Willis give up on their attempt to explore? Sputnik? Franklin? Absolutely not! So why would we? At the conclusion of this episode there will be around 9+ hours of audio, between all the episodes, of Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Matt Moseley discussing the series Marville. We aren't bad people. Really, we rag on a lot of the comics in our lists, but there is usually a silver lining that we can genuinely enjoy. 1960's Fantastic Four art. Chuck Norris walking around some docks. Joseph Culp's performance as Dr. Doom in the 1994 Fantastic Four movie. The last page of Billy Ray Cyrus' comic which, as of this writing, graces are Twitter page. This comic has none of that. To quote Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, who makes a lot of sense in light of this comic: "There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone." twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook Page - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page

Milestones are important. For example, if the human race is still around in 500 years, nobody is going to care who won The Grammy's in 2148. However, people will think "Who won the Grammy for Best Song of the Year for 2000," look up the information, and find that the collaboration between Santana and Rob Thomas produced the winning song, "Smooth." They will hear the song and exclaim "OF COURSE THIS IS TIMELESS!" Well, we want to adhere to those values at Comics Talk Comics, so we refuse to let an episode of Marville be our Issue 50. We are currently working on that much-more bomb-ass episode, but for now we have...this. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Matt Moseley come together to review and discuss Marville #5. We learn more about the secret that Bill Jemas has decided to reveal to the world. I'll leave you with this tidbit from the comic: "Jesus was the first super hero." We keep on trucking and refuse to quit: Marville #4 continues to amaze us. The comic book actually decided to swerve us and become a scientific text about evolution, Jesus, dinosaurs, and Wolverine-Namor. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley (who keeps insisting that this isn't worth it BECAUSE HE'S PROBABLY RIGHT) embark on another adventure into the world created by ex-President of Marvel, Bill Jemas. It's difficult to put into words the thoughts we have about Marville #4, but after much heavy drinking...well, we still don't know. Also, it's worth noting that we lost the last few minutes of the podcast, but it can be summed up as such: This is a bad comic. Please don't read this. Comics Talk Comics wants to take a moment to make a very-special announcement: We're finished. Not as a podcast! We are still going to keep making these things! But we are finished with our pursuit of the worst comic ever. Let me come to you with my hat in hand here and tell you what the origin of this podcast was: It started with Daniel Brown in a comic book shop telling someone about the Clone Saga. Another guy said "Hey, maybe you should make a podcast about bad comic books?" The idea was to find the worst comic books, read them, and convey our feelings about them to the public. A lot of lists unfairly have NFL Super Pro on them; we at the podcast are hardcore advocates of it being one of the greatest, dumb things to ever exist. We have also been pleasantly surprised in the past by titles, such as Archie vs. Predator or Eminem and the Punisher. It's been a real pleasure going through comicdom and figuring out what we think (in our humble opinions) is worth your time. Also, we've tried to find the worst things and determine what happened. Well, we did it: We broke our system. You can listen to this podcast, but I'm going to spoil it in the description: Marville #3 is the worst comic book ever made. That's not just me, Daniel Brown, saying it. Joining me this week is Norm de Plume and Special Guest Matt Moseley. This is the Serbian Film of comic books. Sure, you hear us talking about it and think "It can't be that bad, right? Nope, it's that bad. I'm going to pull something from Issue 04 of the podcast and apply it here. "There are bad things. There are bad things in the world. Many bad things. There are some things that are worse than those bad things. But this is the worst thing." - Norm de Plume twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook Page - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page

Comics Talk Comics is back and we are reviewing Marville #2. Most "Worst Comic Book of All Time" lists say this and NFL SuperPro are the bottom. We are here to tell you that those lists are LIES. NFL SuperPro is the truth; the 'cast loves it. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley are all in agreement that this might be the worst comic book ever made. 2/3rds of the podcast had property damage from the recent tornadoes in Pensacola (stay after the theme music for our sound check/storm discussion if you want more of us [for whatever reason]) and we're all in agreement that this comic book was the worst thing to happen during our week. Please send some encouraging messages to our following streams because this comic book has put Special Guest Matt Moseley on the edge. I believe we make the case during this podcast that it would be a shame to find out that issues of Marville were given to prisoners of Guantanamo Bay. twitter - comstalkcomics reddit - comicstalkcomics email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Facebook Page - Comics Talk Comics Facebook Page

If it weren't for the fact that football season was going on during the creation of episode number one we could have easily started with this series first. Let's just call it a dodged bullet. Marville generally makes critic's top ten lists for "Worst comic book of all time." The podcast has had a lot of experience reading bad comics, but nothing prepared us for this journey. AOL jokes. Ted Turner. Dog farts. Alan Greenspan as a bank manager. Reading this comic book made us believe we were in some kind of shared fever dream.
