We're talking about addiction and sobriety in a new way on the show. You know I've been on my own journey with sobriety for several years now, and it's a daily choice. Part of my purpose is transforming my pain into helping others to rise above whatever circumstances may be driving them towards addiction. My friend Dr. Robb Kelly knows so much about how to do this. Being a recovered alcoholic himself, he helps addicts understand their family's role in their addiction in order to become sober for good. Here's just one insight he started off with: “Alcoholics are born, drug addicts are made.” Robb Kelly, PhD is a world-renowned addiction expert who believes in treating the problem, not the symptoms. He has worked for many years helping addicts and alcoholics to recover their lives from the disease of addiction. Based on his own experiences working with addicts and alcoholics over the last 20 years, combined with a PhD in psychology, and as a recovered alcoholic himself – he is a triple threat against the disease of addiction. Dr. Kelly's philosophy may seem unconventional and unorthodox. But, they are based on extensive research and behavior studies that he conducted over the last 20 years. He pulls the disease out of his clients and empowers them to fight their disease head on. Some people have referred to him as “The Gordon Ramsay of the Addiction World” because of his direct, no-nonsense, and candid approach to recovery. He has discovered that in order to get his clients to change their thinking, they must confront their disease with candor and vigor. Dr. Kelly works to “make the road of recovery less of a mystery tour.” Robb Kelly, PhD has worked with thousands of people including celebrities of film, music, and sports. He has lectured at many high profile universities and hospitals on the subject of addiction, and is recognized as a leading authority on addiction recovery methods that are changing lives all around the world. Today, he is living his dream, instead of dreaming of living. In this episode, Dr. Robb shares powerful insights into addiction, sobriety, healing our bodies and minds, and much more. He is so generous, he even shared his personal cell phone number at the end of the episode to be available to anyone facing an addiction crisis! Here's what you will learn: The ways that drug addiction differs from alcoholism (8:33) Why somatic experience works (13:21) How alcoholics respond to tone (20:10) How brainspotting works (29:27) Tune in to this episode and learn something new! In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with Dr. Robb Kelly, PhD For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/Dr-Robb-Kelly Highlights from today's episode include: So, everything is going good. We got the wife back, just got in a great job, amazing, fantastic and then we self-sabotage…alcoholics and addicts for what they can see as no reason. Well, the reason is childhood trauma, and it's still stored, because we've got to deal with it. that's what we do with trauma, it becomes our comfort zone, it becomes our buffer, even though I know it's painful, and it's going to be horrible. It becomes the only thing that I know, in times of trouble. So, the idea is, is to address that, to smash that box and make sure you can't get back in. But right now, it's people often ask me, you know, what's the answer? And the answer is dialogue and education are relative because people don't understand that alcoholism is a disease, so is drug addiction and that it's a predisposition, we don't have a choice over this. So when we take our first drink, it sets up that cycle internally. ABOUT DR. Show Summary This was the most interesting and informative interview I've ever done. I made a new friend with Dr. Robb Kelly. He was so great in answering myth-busting questions for me. Alcohol DOESN'T kill brain cells. I've always heard it did. We talk about the hypothalamus, how oxygen heals, and so much more. Read more about him in the next couple of paragraphs, check out his links, then listen to this amazing interview. “We are born with million dollar minds, stop hanging around .10 minds. So if you're sitting there with suicide on your mind, just so depressed you can't get up for your kids, I want you to call me and I will give you a five minute pep talk that will change your life. And if it doesn't, I will send you $100 for the courtesy of calling me.” -Dr Robb Kelly (214-600-0210 Texting is quicker and best) Dr. Robb Kelly, PhD is a sought-after recovery expert who believes in treating the causes of addiction and not the symptoms. numbing shows up in many forms...scrolling, binging, wine, potato chips, chocolate, gossip and more...this Mama's story through the darkness...
For a lot of folks, CBD is a tool in their toolkit for breaking out of addiction and ending destructive cycles in their life. At the end of the day, that's what this show, and our belief in CBD, is most about — ending toxic cycles and beginning healthy ones. And that's why we felt we had to hear from Erik Allen on the show. Erik Allen's life started out normally enough, with Sunday school and Little League games. But when he was 11, his parents got divorced, and his life started to go nowhere fast. His mom's new boyfriend, an extremely abusive alcoholic, moved the family to a tiny town in Montana with a population of 1,200 people. There, the abuse intensified, and one night Erik had to come to his mom's defense with a cast iron skillet. After that, he was more or less on his own, and he turned to drugs — particularly hallucinogens — for an escape. Fast forward a few years, and by age 21, he was already $28,000 in debt and had filed for bankruptcy. Holding down a job didn't come easily. “If I didn't like something at work, I would be like, ‘Peace out' and just quit, and so I had like a ton of jobs,” he says. “Everything from working at a tech shop to working at Hot Topic to being a maid at a hotel for one day. I got fired after a day because I couldn't make the bed right. I mean, I would hop around from job to job.” One of those jobs ultimately wound up being at Universal Records, where the pay wasn't good — for the first six months, he wasn't paid at all — but the perks were: “Over a two-year span, I probably went to 135 concerts. I was backstage living that rock star lifestyle.” But he wasn't happy, and he was continuing to abuse drugs and alcohol. Until one day, a girl came into Starbucks, where he worked nights, and asked if he wanted to go to church with her. On this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Erik talk about his path to becoming sober, his life today as an MMA business owner and podcaster, and how CBD works for him. What You'll Learn: How Erik became an entrepreneur who helps other entrepreneurs and MMA fighters be successful (and what those two groups have in common) How, after being arrested for having a bong in his teens, he thinks of the industry today Why, as a sober person, Erik feels he's still able to benefit from CBD And much more! Favorite Quote: “I'm fascinated with people's stories, and especially break-through type stories, if somebody's going through something and they're able to break through that — break addictions or break through divorce, abuse, the failures of bankruptcy, whatever it is — and then make it big.” — Erik Allen Connect With Erik Erik Allen Media LinkedIn Facebook How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Gary considers hemp-based medicine a calling, and his organization, along with the world-class team that runs it, reflects his passion. In this episode we head to Southern California to visit with Lori Massicot who tells us of what it was like for her getting sober just over 7 years ago. She takes us back to the night her and her husband went out to see a Kid Rock Concert and while completely wasted she realized that she couldn't go on drinking like this anymore. Something had to change. Lori tells us about her decision to quit drinking forever, the difficulties she faced and how her recovery journey began. She shares some good advice on getting sober and we discuss the importance of being able to talk about alcoholism, talking openly with your children, the need for family support and how finding your community in sobriety is crucial. Now Lori works with men and women to encourage aging with grace and a life of sobriety. She is the host of her own podcast called "To 50 And Beyond" where she covers many areas relating to aging, sobriety and awareness.
