If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“When you own your story you own your power and this can be VERY uncomfortable, but incredibly life changing.” ______ Whilst leading a successful Brand Comms agency, Torstar for nearly 20years, Tory Archbold had a pivotal moment. She'd had a near death experience and found herself standing in a courtroom representing herself after 10 years of being aggressively stalked by an ex. After winning the case she knew her life would never be the same again. She wanted a life with more purpose. It was time to reshape her story. After twenty years of being ‘behind the scenes' as one of Australia's most powerful publicists, working with top name brands and celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Megan Gale, Zara, Nespresso and Victoria's Secret, Tory felt it was time to step forward and own her own story. She used this momentum and founded Powerful Steps in 2019 – a platform designed to inspire, encourage and guide women through the different challenges of life. Tory is a gorgeous human and is passionate about sharing her learnings and knowledge to mentor and empower others. In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast we sat down with best-selling author, Sonia Bestulic. They met when Sonia joined Tory’s Business Attraction program in 2020. Sonia has just launched her third book – ‘Flourish for Mums- 21 ways to thrive with self-care and acceptance.’ She understands the juggle of life as a wife, mother of 3 and businesswoman. ‘Every day is different and it is always changing. Coming to the point of accepting that was liberating’ says Sonia ‘I needed to embrace the fact that I am learning and growing just as my children are – so let’s do this together’. In Sonia’s book she says, ‘Life is only a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see.’ Sonia, has worked with thousands of mothers, over 20 years, as a speech pathologist. She has seen three main challenges that stop mothers from flourishing. ‘78% of mothers put off looking after their own health as they are in a mindset that our children and family come first’ says Sonia. ‘Mother’s guilt is real.’ Society has placed unrealistic expectations on Mum’s ‘which results in them not feeling good enough.’ The third challenges arises when we bring in work. ‘It actually changes a woman’s perception of time – the feeling that there is not enough time to fit it in.’ So, what do mothers truly want? Happiness and health for their children. To nurture a positive relationship we need warmth, care, support and quality time. ‘The most fundamental relationship we have is the one with ourselves. If our children witness us practicing self-care, we are modelling to them a crucial life skill.’ So, we need to prioritise ourselves first and we need to create a personal mission statement to step into alignment with what we value. ‘For me it’s empowering positive change, and that filters through with what goes on at home as well.’ Sonia quotes Jack Cornfield- “It’s not about perfecting yourself; it is perfecting your love.” It is a powerful statement. Sonia believes ‘you should be living your life powered and fuelled by love and not guilt.’ Once a year, Tory does a friends and family detox where she reflects on those who have had a positive impact on her life. ‘We’ve got to choose our company wisely’ says Sonia ‘It is important to be selective because it is an act of self-care. When you are surrounded by people who authentically build you up it feels like the sky is the limit.’ So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Sonia Bestulic. In her early twenties, Laura Csortan was so determined to land her dream job on hit show The Great Outdoors that she packed up her life and drove 1400kms to couch surf in Sydney—after having the courage to ring top TV execs and say she had what it took. She was right. A couple of months after moving “with her eyes on the prize”, Laura was in Scotland on her first job for the travel show and kickstarting her long career in TV. Along the way, she’s “jumped out of planes, jumped out of boats in the middle of the ocean, ridden a motorbike across the Sahara”—great story!—and become a single mum to daughter Layla, 4, all while sticking true to her values. Laura’s story of starting her first business at 14, forging a global career and now fighting back from the “real blow” of COVID is so inspirational Powerful Steps CEO Tory Archbold invited her to talk values, mindsets and pivots on the new Powerful Stories podcast. This is no fairy-tale story of a genetically-blessed model getting lucky. This is about pure hard work and the beauty of having a plan. Laura is a driven, smart businesswoman with great strategies for other entrepreneurs, who told me how for decades she ploughed every cent she made into one investment area. Her No1 tip? “Own every experience. Own it, learn from it and always move forward,” she says. “And trust your gut on everything. In her teens, Yasmin London—then Yasmin Dunn—was a champion Australian backstroker. In her twenties and thirties, she was a tireless cop who regularly talked people down from the cliff at Sydney’s notorious The Gap. And now, as a mother of two, Yasmin is one of Australia’s leading cyber safety experts. If anyone has lived an authentic life, combining her twin loves of competition and the human experience, it’s Yasmin. That’s why Tory Archbold wanted her as a guest on the Powerful Stories podcast. Few women have moved from the top echelons of sports to policing and now global entrepreneurship—Yasmin has not just great stories of travelling the world as an athlete but powerful insights about resilience … and a love story founded below a slow spinning mirror ball! Yasmin’s public story is a tiny part of her life. She’s the swimmer who followed the black line for more than 24,500kms until her Olympic dream was crushed when she slipped off the trial blocks. She found a new passion as a policewoman but was “a square peg in a round hole from the beginning,” she says. “Caused me some problems.” And, just quietly, gained her a global audience: video of her doing her signature samurai dance move at a Sydney event has been seen by over 6.6 million people on Facebook (she tells the story on the podcast—fantastic.) Yasmin’s reinvention as an international leader around online safety at ySafe is a triumph, and hers is a great story for anyone wanting to know not just how to keep their children safe but how to have a great second or third act. If you love news and current affairs, you will have seen Jacinta Tynan for years on TV, fronting shows on Seven, the ABC and Sky News. You might have read her magazine columns, critiqued what she wears, thought ‘I quite like this woman.’ But do you know who the real Jacinta Tynan is? Powerful Steps CEO Tory Archbold does—they’ve been friends for decades—and she wanted everyone else to know Jacinta too. The woman below the polished screen voice and face, the fun and capable friend whose proudest achievement in life is her two sons. So Tory invited Jacinta to be her guest on the new Powerful Stories podcast, where for the first time a candid Jacinta shares the story of the day during COVID that nearly broke her—and how it meant that when she was made redundant from her high-profile job she was not just accepting but ready and resilient. Now studying to be a life coach, Jacinta shared how her lifelong career ambition (I wonder if you’ll be surprised by it?) was sidelined by journalism, her experiences as a single mum and her greatest life lesson. “Everything has to collapse for you to be able to create the next thing. If you are not listening to the signs, the destruction comes out of the blue and hits hard,” she says. “Don’t want for it to collapse and have you in a heap on the floor. Be self-aware and on top of it, and see if before it comes.” Hear what Jacinta’s story and success strategies—and what she has planned next—on Powerful Stories, launching on Nova on Monday. This is one thing you need to know right now about Melissa Ambrosini: her podcast has had over 14 million downloads. What! That puts her in Oprah territory (and the US media giant is her dream guest, of course) and says everything about how beautifully she connects with women everywhere. Melissa’s message is simple and directed straight at people like me, who at times hear that inner critic saying you’re not good enough. That you’ll never find the dream man. That you’ll never be out of debt, never fall pregnant, never feel beautiful. That you’re never enough. Totally wrong, says the Australian entrepreneur and coach. I love what she stands for and teaches to clients all over the world. So I invited her to be my guest on the latest Powerful Stories podcast. If you’re someone who has as at times been devastated by that tiny sledging voice inside your head, you’ll get so much value out of what Melissa—author of the bestselling Mastering Your Mean Girl—tells me. We talk Melissa’s amazing four-step CAST process to crush your inner mean girl and master self-love, decluttering your life, what she does in the car with her husband (I admit I do it too), how to stop being a people pleaser and her verdict on “one of the most powerful phrases” you can say. “I want to encourage everyone to practise saying ‘no thank you’ and getting really good at it,” says Melissa. “When you say ‘no thank you’ to someone else, you are saying, ‘Yes’ to yourself.” Hear Melissa’s strategies on Powerful Stories, launching on Nova on Monday. In the past, I’ve been besties with overwhelm. You probably have too. Reaching to check emails the minute your eyes open, madly trying to get everything done at work before its school pick up time, worrying about cleaning the house and filling the fridge and booking in a wax and oh God, trying to find ten minutes just to return a friend’s call. Once I was so overwhelmed by running a business and being a single mum that I booked into a health retreat in Thailand - and had a panic attack on the plane! Overwhelm is something Felicity Harley also knows inside out. The founding editor of Women’s Health magazine and a media star for 20 years, she’s also a hands-on mum of three (with her Sydney Swans CEO husband Tom Harley) and was so intrigued by the epidemic of modern women looking for perfection, and finding burnout, that she wrote a book about it. On the latest Powerful Stories podcast, the fabulous Felicity is honest about her spotlight life - revealing what her husband did after a big day out with the kids and how she felt about it - and why she thinks the wellness movement is making things worse for women. We talked about how she runs her own life, strategises to beat overwhelm - the third made me laugh - and the ‘U’ of happiness (you’ll love working out where you sit). The big question: Can we really have it all? “In one word, no. I don’t think we can,” Felicity said. “We can’t have it all at the same time. It’s about choosing what you want right in that moment and what’s important to you.” Join me and Felicity for the new Powerful Stories episode, launching today on Nova.
