We remember the great George Wendt, America's favorite barfly, Norm Peterson on Cheers.  Wendt had all kinds of ties to Kansas City and is remembered as a great family man and one of the all time great characters in the history of television.    While Trump was working on Cap Hill for the Big Bill, he kept bringing up Joe Biden's auto pen signatures and it's pretty clear now a huge investigation is about to begin.  Who exactly ran our country the last four years?    Victor Davis Hanson, on a podcast, muses that Kansas City could be a new destination for the FBI to have headquarters outside DC.  If true, this could be thousands of jobs here.    The Royals have another weak night at the plate and fall to the Giants, 3-2.  KU is having an incredible baseball season and their coach has just won a huge award.  And an incredible, global cycling event is here this holiday weekend and it sounds like the toughest event ever.

It's Friday, and we're rounding up the biggest stories of the week. First, CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy Chris Wright — also known as the guy who drank fracking fluid on camera to “prove” it was safe — is President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the Department of Energy. Who is Wright, and what would his appointment mean for the climate crisis? Then, the city has proposed building pickleball courts to fill the vacant lot at Colfax and Broadway. Will pickleball players go for it? Host Bree Davies is joined by stand-up comedian Joshua Emerson and Denver Post environmental reporter Noelle Phillips to talk climate change, local recreation, Westernaires' problematic Native American reenactments, a new pizza spot coming to Cap Hill, and more wins and fails of the week. Bree mentioned the proposed pedestrian bridges to the Capitol and the Evans School going from an artist studio space to a beer garden. Joshua discussed the Douglas County School District and their decision to postpone an AP African American studies course. What do you think? Denver has always been home to revolutionary movements — Chicano civil rights, disability justice, and the fight for LGBTQ+ equality have all played out here across decades. For each of those movements, geography plays an important role, like Capitol Hill, where queer people found refuge, support, and community. Ahead of PrideFest this weekend, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi join comics artist and historian B. Erin Cole on a walking tour of Cap Hill, as seen through a queer historical lens. B. Erin has researched and illustrated a map with markers from the State Capitol to Cheesman Park — but it's the flipped homes, demolished buildings, and long-gone bars in-between that tell the deeper story of the neighborhood's vibrant LGBTQ+ history.  B. Erin Cole's illustrated map of queer Capitol Hill can be found as part of History Colorado's Rainbows and Revolutions exhibit, on view now. Find more of B. If you haven't heard part one of our look at 1800 S. Broadway and the dawn of public weed consumption in Denver, scroll back in your podcast feed to last Friday or click here. When the city of Denver opened applications for marijuana hospitality businesses last year, the new program attracted a diverse mix of go-getters, from the owner of a private marijuana club who wanted to go public to a Cap Hill mansion whose owners thought weed would help attract more tourists. Among them was an enterprising young real estate tycoon, Josh Horwitz. He applied to open a weed lounge at 1800 S. Broadway, the exact spot where Habibi Hookah Cafe undermined the trust of the neighborhood with excessive late-night partying and violence. The neighbors are organizing to stop Horwitz and City Councilman Jolon Clark is opposed to his permit, but no one has heard his side of the story. Until now.  This isn't the first time Denver has tried to set up a regulatory framework for marijuana hospitality businesses. They tried before a few years ago, but the rules were so restrictive that only one business ever opened. You can learn more about that and Denver's long on-again, off-again relationship with weed in today's CCD newsletter: https://denver.citycast.fm/newsletter/ What do you think should be done about 1800 S. Denver's sidewalks are in a sorry state, and that's if you're lucky enough to live in a neighborhood that has them. What's worse is the fact that property owners are responsible for maintaining our sidewalks, which means not much maintenance gets done at all. So how are we supposed to get out of this mess? Last week, City Cast Denver producer Xandra McMahon tagged along on a walking tour of Cap Hill with District 10 councilperson Chris Hinds and Denver Streets Partnership executive director Jill Locantore to talk about how we got here, the disproportionate impact on our neighbors with disabilities, and what's stopping us from addressing the problem.  There's a lot more important stuff happening out there, and you can read about it all in our nifty morning newsletter. Slaughterhouse Studios and Deadroom Comedy came together to create a new idea of having local comedians perform stand-up to a literally Dead Room. The audience was asked ahead of time to do everything they can to not laugh during a 1 minute performance and the comedians have to work above and beyond to get the laughs out of the crowd. The show is opened by Noah Reynolds (of Chicken And The Nuggets Podcast) with a hilarious set of conventional comedy and then Jeff Stonic and Jacob Jonas (of Dessert with DeadRoom Comedy Podcast) begin the new game "1 Minute In A Dead Room". Each comedian is given a score after their performance based off of how many laughs they can get out of the crowd within their 60 seconds, and then the hosts reset room, and clock for the next comedian. This podcast was recoded in real time with a live audience within the DeadRoom basement, in the heart of Cap Hill in Denver Co.
