The Dan Nestle Show

In this episode, Dan sits down with marketer, author, and two-time resigner turned bonafide career transition master Sara J. McElroy.  Sara's journey looks a lot like the picture of success: academic achievement followed by a steady rise in marketing and ultimately to a CMO role. But in the midst of the Great Resignation, her battles with overwork, toxic workplaces, health crises, and sexual harassment all led to two resignations, a spiritual awakening, personal empowerment, and a mission to help women find their voices and take charge of their careers. Now, as founder and CEO of Raze to Rise, she's on a mission to “uplift the voices of women from the Great Resignation across diverse walks of life, industries, functions, and career stages” and empower women to “make bold career moves.”   She and Dan cover a lot of ground as Sara challenges conventional, “rational” career choices and argues that emotions, intuition, and physiology have a massive role to play in making life-changing decisions.  Here's a taste of what you'll learn about through their conversation: How and when to manage your career.  Career management is a mindset and an inside job. The most important times in your career before making the leap.  Career transitions can be messy and it's necessary … the Messcessary.  The life experience that prompted a life change.  The unlikely gift of Shingles.  Getting off the grid can often be the best thing.  Most professionals need more than a weekend to plot their next moves.  The critical role sexual harassment played in her life choices.  Seeing the connections of random events. Forward-thinking themes that came from the pandemic, especially for women.  The value of self-discovery and the role it plays in balancing life.  We can have a plan, but until we experience it, we don't know.  Missing the senses of when it's time to move on.  How to learn and leverage body signals.  The danger of internal capitalism. Notable Quotes: “The moments of our careers that are most impactful are the ones that are coming in the in-between, not the big moment of turning in the resignation and walking out the door.” (4:26), Sara. “I just had the idea that if I just follow the playbook, that perfect life playbook where you climb the ladder and chase the fancier titles and fatter paychecks, and everything will work out.” – (9:01), Sara. “I went off to Peru and began reconnecting with the parts of me that weren't just lost over the last couple of years and even childhood.” – (13:01), Sara. “The lather, rinse, repeat of our current lifestyle keeps us really stuck.” – (14:40), Sara.  “Valedictorians by in large don't become leaders.” – (19:44), Dan.  “Sexual harassment is not a style.” – (25:22), Sara. “I felt like I could not be the only woman who was getting mired in the spin cycle of being burnout, overwhelm, toxic culture.” – (32:20), Sara. “Designing a fulfilling career is an inside job.” (34:27), Sara.  “The expression listen to your gut is more than just a metaphor.” – (36:35), Dan.  “Our bodies are hardwired for experience of joy and bliss.” – (42:55), Sara.  “We are built to move through all of the things we're facing in life through our senses.” – (45:19), Sara.  “In a professional world, you're kind of like a brain, floating around in an apparatus that allows you to execute what you need to do.” – (50:40), Sara. “We have been taught to ignore the signs that things are not working for us.” – (51:27), Sara. “Disease is the last attempt to get our attention when we're doing things that are not good for us.”- (51:27), Sara.  “We have the ability to feel into what we think is good.” – (54:44), Sara.  “It's also important to meditate.” (1:01:08), Sara. “When consequences are larger and bigger and weighs on you, you really need to tune in and listen.” – (1:07:00), Dan. “Sometimes your employer is unable to give you what you need to grow.” – (1:10:00), Dan. She wants to share the raw, messy, and inspiring stories of women to create a playbook for designing a fulfilling career. 00:35:17 - Designing a Fulfilling Career, Sara believes that designing a fulfilling career is an inside job. She believes that embracing the unexpected and staying true to oneself is essential when navigating career transitions. 00:43:35 - The Role of Physiology, Sara explores the role of physiology in decision-making and career choices. By connecting visualization to our bodies, we can determine what 01:02:51 - The Impact of a Job on Relationships, Sara reflects on how her job affected her relationships in Australia and acknowledges that some of those relationships may not have been good for her in the first place. 01:03:30 - Measuring Readiness to Leave a Job, Sara discusses her quit readiness quiz, which helps individuals assess their readiness to leave a job. Factors such as stability in other aspects of life, length of dissatisfaction, comfort with uncertainty, and financial stability are considered. 01:04:58 - Balancing Rationality and Emotion in Career Decisions, Sara emphasizes the importance of not acting blindly on emotions when making career decisions. She suggests considering both rational and emotional factors, and taking a balanced approach that includes planning and thoughtful decision-making. 01:06:07 - Expanding and Growing Outside of Work, Dan and Sara discuss the importance of personal growth and expansion, both within and outside of work. They highlight the need to listen to the signals of growth, such as feeling stuck or the desire to stretch and evolve, and finding opportunities to fulfill that growth. 01:10:30 - The Individualized Nature of Career Paths, Sara emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all playbook for career decisions. Each person's journey is unique, and it's important to explore different paths and opportunities for growth, even if they may not directly align with one's current career. The focus is on individualized fulfillment and finding joy and meaning in various aspects of life. 01:18:36 - The Impact of Self-Objectification and Internalized Capitalism, The guest discusses the harmful effects of self-objectification and internalized capitalism on individuals. She emphasizes how these societal pressures lead people to believe that their worth is tied to productivity and achieving success in their careers. 01:19:06 - The Historical Origins of Work Culture, The conversation delves into the historical roots of work culture, tracing it back to the Industrial Revolution when humans were seen as resources to be valued based on their economic output. This mindset still persists and influences how we view work and ourselves today. 01:20:25 - Challenges for Women in the Business World, The guest acknowledges that women face additional challenges in the business world, such as being judged based on their marital status and motherhood. Today's episode is a recording of a presentation Robert gave on Becoming an Ideal Team Player at our recent new hire onboarding week.  The Ideal Team Player concept was developed by Patrick Lencioni and is critical to long-term career success. In this discussion, I show how exceptional teams change the world, how exceptional teams are made up of Ideal Team Players, and the behaviors required to become an effective Ideal Team Player. Finally, we cover some practical tips and tools that can help anyone level-up their team-centered behaviors. We reference several materials in this discussion to help level-up your skillset, regardless of your career or experience level: You can find the presentation Slides from my talk https://www.slideshare.net/robertgreiner/becoming-the-ideal-team-player-185531442 (here) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28930640-the-ideal-team-player (The Ideal Team Player) by Patrick Lencioni https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23848190-extreme-ownership (Extreme Ownership) by Jocko Willink https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29939161-radical-candor (Radical Candor) by Kim Scott https://robertgreiner.com/the-trust-equation/ (The Trust Equation) from https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/873993.The_Trusted_Advisor (The Trusted Advisor) by David Maister https://www.manager-tools.com/all-podcasts?field_content_domain_tid=4 (Manager Tools) and https://www.manager-tools.com/all-podcasts?field_content_domain_tid=5 (Career Tools) - free resources that provide practical career-centric advice for any situation "There's a cast for that" I also took live polls from the virtual audience to help increase engagement using https://www.polleverywhere.com/ (PollEverywhere) As always, don't forget to hit the subscribe button in your podcast player of choice and feel free to drop us a line at hello@wannagrabcoffee.com or on Twitter https://twitter.com/wannagrabcoffee (@wannagrabcoffee).

Mark Horstman is an incredibly accomplished business leader and personality.  He graduated from West Point, served in the military for many years, had a successful business career, and now has two popular business and career podcasts (Manager Tools and Career Tools). He runs a successful consultancy firm, Manager Tools, and has written two books (The Effective Manager and the Effective Hiring Manager).  And on top of all of that, he’s a father of 7! He’s accomplished a lot throughout his life, and shared his wisdom and life experiences with us.  We tap into many topics throughout this discussion, from how Mark grew up, to what he taught his kids about money, his favorite books, and his views on productivity and retirement.  Mark shares his views on “lean living,” which is a term he coined that was inspired by lean manufacturing and lean supply chains. Mark also shares some of the things he’s been doing to save money lately.  Mark talks about the concept of “race don’t chase,” which he has multiple podcast episodes on.  The race don’t chase concept is from the business world, but heavily applicable to personal finance.  Race don’t chase is the concept that when the market turns and things start going down, what you’re supposed to do is cut your expenses faster than your revenue drops.  You race your revenues to the bottom of the market, so you can be profitable even when your revenues are going down.  Mark leaves us with some final wisdom and life advice to 1) tell the truth, 2) be kind, 3) save and do not fall into the trap that the things you have will bring your joy, and 4) give back. Mark has been podcasting for 15 years and also shared some great advice with us on podcasting.  Please listen to enjoy all that Mark has to share!Show ReferencesManager Tools WebsiteThe Effective Manager by Mark HorstmanThe Effective Hiring Manager by Mark HorstmanManager Tools Book Reviews---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at:  friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.org---Other LinksMaggie’s Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike’s Book:  Your New Relationship with Money

Sometimes bosses… drunk ones…  have rather unrealistic expectations. Expectations that can never be met, nor should they be! You can do a better job!! Today on Office Horror Stories! Here’s a preview of the office horror story we will be talking about:  “I was exhausted as I had been in classes all week and working extra as it was Christmas and I needed some extra money for presents etc. After the party finally finished around 1.30, we were expected to clean up as usual. I asked if we were being paid for the extra hours and I got laughed at. He literally laughed in my face. He told me to carry on cleaning and to stop asking questions. He went to the toilet and came out in a fit of rage. Screaming ‘YOU TOLD ME YOU HAD CLEANED THE TOILETS’ I replied, ‘I have, they may not be perfect seeing as I am exhausted and the cleaning equipment you have provided is not particularly adequate, but they are clean. I am sure if there are any issues the day staff can do it in the morning to help us out’. He came storming over, screaming at me that he was the boss and he would decide who does what. I was told to go back into the toilet and rectify my mistakes immediately. I was on my hands and knees cleaning the toilet well after 3am, knowing I stopped being paid 3 hours ago, with a drunk middle-aged man literally stood over me screaming to do a better job.”   If you have an office horror story, we want to hear it! Share it with us by writing in on our website http://www.officehorrorstories.com or call in anytime 1-833-HATE-JOB.

2 Minute Tip: Where Can We Learn More?   It's highly unlikely any of us as speakers will be in a situation where someone wants us to tell them absolutely everything we know, along with the background on all those details and to do it in one super long session. They may still want the information; they just don't want to sit through it all and neither do I. To make things easier for your more enthusiastic audience members, include a slide or develop a handout that tells your audience members where they can go to get more information.   That information can go well beyond the details of your presentation, and it can come from a wide assortment of sources like:   Books Websites Social Media Feeds Podcasts Archived Interviews ...and many more   By pulling together the resources that informed your recent project you are also curating content for your audience, establishing your credibility, and becoming a great digital citizen.   Post Tip Discussion: Manage Audience Expectations   In every presentation, there are expectations. Whether it's a successful presentation or not really depends on who defines those expectations. As a speaker, you want that to be you. If not, your audience will set expectations, and you won't know what they are. There are five areas to consider when looking at expectations. They are:   Teach your audience to listen to you Set basic expectations around the logistics for short and long sessions. Manage the expectations in your content Use the BLUF technique Understand the risk of holding back for a big reveal.   The BLUF technique, or "bottom line up front," is one I learned about from the folks over at Manager Tools and Career Tools. They're both excellent podcasts worth checking out.   Call To Action:   Tells us your thoughts on managing audience expectations in the comments below, or email me at Bill @ 2minutetalktips.com.  You can also reach out to me via Twitter @CurrentlyBill If you liked this episode, share it with your friends through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or the social networks of your choice Check out Manager Tools and Career Tools Don’t get best…get better

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who was kind enough to have me as a guest on his show Smashing The Plateau. This is a great show where he raises the question that we all need help with in our lives - How to get past that huge obstacle that keeps us stuck in our lives. How to smash the plateau. you see its all in the name. Now the interesting thing about our guest is his desire to not only help individuals achieve success, but also companies too which has taken up the bulk of his life over the last decade.. He is the President of TEND Strategic Partners, and is a recognised authority on leadership and management capabilities that lead to organisational excellence. He is the creator of the TEND System™, specifically designed to take advantage of existing resources from a team…building upon successes they have already achieved… integrating and managing structured changes, with built-in accountability, without adding excessive workload or unnecessary expenses. By tapping into time-tested blueprints to overcome emotional and tactical roadblocks, he designs and implements the innovations needed for business to thrive, and empowers organisations to become the recognised go-to resource in their niche. But of course within all organisations their are individuals with their own problems, so is it as simple as helping the man is the quickest way of helping the boss? Or do we simply have to find a world where the right pegs are banged into the right holes. Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Mr David Shriner-Cahn.

But that ability to influence our choices is often misunderstood as managing what job we're in, why we're in it, and what other jobs we can have. And one of the situations that confuses us is when our organization asks us to interview for a job without us applying for it. Maybe we really want the job, maybe we would have never considered it. But when they ask US - when the COMPANY seems to know more than we do, and we don't know what the invite MEANS ... it's confusing. And that's why Career Tools is here: to explain what to do and why.
