1985 was quickly becoming one of the most competitive years in the history of animation, setting the stage for future 80s nostalgia. There were so many classic 80s cartoons released in 1985-- including a unique new series called ThunderCats--that it was going to be difficult to stand out. But fortunately, the production company behind the new show knew a thing or two about capturing the attention of kids, as they had been doing it during the holidays for decades. But now, they were moving to after-school and Saturday morning cartoons. From the studio that brought us beloved Christmas classics like Rudolph and Frosty came the story of a race of humanoid feline superheroes. With characters like Lion-O and Snarf, and a very popular line of toys from LJN, the ThunderCats quickly became a new breed in children's entertainment, a standout 1980s cartoon, and a pop culture phenomenon. The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back to react to USC head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to make a change at the defensive coordinator position, firing Alex Grinch after the Trojans lost for the third time in four games, falling to Washington 52-42 in the Coliseum. They also break down the explosive offensive night of action from Saturday that sent the Trojans home with a 7-3 record on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including how despite being ahead early and then later the score being even, it never really felt like USC was going to win the game because the Trojans defense wasn't going to be able to get a stop to give the USC offense the requisite opportunity to win the game. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to Washington and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including veteran running back Darwin Barlow finally getting an opportunity and wasting no time at all to make an impact, second-year freshman Tre'Quon Fegans taking advantage of an opportunity and Lincoln Riley having the correct mentality when it comes to defense, saying "We're going to play great defense here." The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with Alex Grinch being at the top of the list followed by a failing pass rush and Riley claiming the Trojans are two plays away from being undefeated in conference play. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the Trojans trip to Eugene this weekend for a matchup against No. 6 Oregon Saturday in Autzen Stadium, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and one of the frontrunners for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Ducks quarterback Bo Nix. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and email discussing the desired defense scheme as well as some of the USC players saying they didn't watch the film of the Washington game afterwards. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on some of the top cartoon theme songs. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Oregon matchup (7:30 p.m. PST) on the road this weekend. In this episode of Confetti Park, we hear a childhood music memory from New Orleans-based saxophonist John Doheny. John has a long career as a professional jazz musician, band leader, writer, and educator. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, he first started playing clarinet as a child and was part of youth orchestras from an early age. John switched to saxophone as a teenager, and says he developed his chops playing six nights a week as a college student in Vancouver. He spent his twenties and thirties playing and recording with a slate of well-known pop and rhythm and blues artists such as the Coasters, the Platters, Bobby Curtola, Buddy Knox, the Temptations, Solomon Burke, Michael Buble, and Doug and the Slugs. In 2003, John moved to New Orleans and enrolled in the graduate school at Tulane University. In addition to earning an MA in Musicology (with a concentration in Early New Orleans Jazz), he served as Professor of Practice in the music department and directed the student jazz band. He also served as band leader of the Professors of Pleasure, and has released several straight-ahead jazz recordings. In this memory, John recalls how his mother made him practice every day, and how it led to a favorite jam. "My mother said you have to practice for 30 minutes after school or no cartoons. And so I would be sitting there practicing with the Klose book, and then the cartoons would come on, and then because I already had the horn in my hand, I taught myself how to play the Bugs Bunny theme song. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was teaching myself how to play what I hear, which is kind of what you want to do."
During their CHESS conversation, Patrick and Jason fell into a nostalgia hole about Saturday morning cartoons. A glorious, glorious hole. Featured recordings: Garfield and Friends X-Men Pokemon Gummy Bears Duck Tales Animaniacs Tiny Toon Adventures Freakazoid Denver the Last Dinosaur M*A*S*K He-Man Twitter.com/OriginalCastPod Facebook.com/OriginalCastPod Email: OriginalCastPod@gmail.com
