We looked at the TV shows of 1974 (fifty years ago!) a few months back with the Mayor, but now it's Kornflake's turn. Our list again includes some of the usual suspects like Rhoda and The Rockford Files... but ultimately we can all agree that the most important show of that year was Hong Kong Phooey. We also take a quick look at some bands that debuted in 1974; some are still favorites of ours (Blondie! Squeeze!), while we're learning about others for the first time, despite some very intriguing band names. Also: We wish a Happy Birthday to Bonnie Raitt, and we welcome two new podcasts to the ESO Network: Have Coffee Will Travel and BatChums! (One of these shows features two guys discussing Batman, but we can't remember which.) The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! MONSTER PARTY GETS... WAY OUT! WAY OUT! SHAWN SHERIDAN, JAMES GONIS, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, pack their audio pic-a-nic baskets, for a journey through animation history! Join us for a wacky race into the exciting world of... HANNA-BARBERA! WILLIAM HANNA and JOSEPH BARBERA were the innovative team behind many of the world's favorite cartoons. Over their long career, they were responsible for such memorable characters as TOM & JERRY, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR, THE JETSONS, SCOOBY DOO, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, TOP CAT, SECRET SQUIRREL, HONG KONG PHOOEY, THE WACKY RACES, ATOM ANT, SNAGGLEPUSS, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME, and HUNDREDS more! HANNA-BARBERA also blazed a trail when it came to producing adventure cartoons. This was the team that brought us JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, SUPER FRIENDS, SHAZZAN, VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS, and many other fantastical Saturday morning staples. Not satisfied with the status quo, HANNA and BARBERA ventured out into the world of feature films, giving us THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR!, and the beloved animated classic, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If that's not enough for you folks, they even tackled live-action with THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR, DANGER ISLAND, MYSTERY ISLAND, and the under-appreciated live-action/animation hybrid, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN! Of course, we don't have the space to list all of HANNA-BARBERA'S achievements. That's what the episode is for. But, speaking of that! There was only one guest we could have booked for this epic topic. He's a friend of the show, appearing (along with fellow MP friend, CONSTANTINE NASR) on our CHRISTMAS SPECIALS episode, and has an awe-inspiring resume. He's a two-time Grammy-nominated and Addy-winning freelance writer, editor, and producer with 30 years of magic with The Walt Disney Company and over 40 years of professional writing and production experience! He's the author of MOUSE TRACKS: THE STORY OF WALT DISNEY RECORDS, and the recent (and dare we say, timely) book... HANNA-BARBERA: THE RECORDED HISTORY- FROM MODERN STONE AGE TO MEDDLING KIDS. And be sure to check out his podcast, THE FUNTASTIC WORLD OF HANNA & BARBERA. Please welcome back the also funtastic... GREG EHRBAR! NOW, GET TO LISTENING... OR MEET YOUR YABBA DABBA DOOOOM!
I've long thought about our individual persona or personas and this idea of ever evolving identities …for example, people who have work and non-work personas: the arsehole in work, nice as pie out of work; the surprising competitive aggression at the work social bowling alley do, the extroverted party goer (ok, so there might be some substance impact for that one) – kinda like Henry the mild mannered janitor morphing into Hong Kong Phooey (does anyone remembers that show?!)What does this mean for the authentic you? Who actually are you?I think I've come to the conclusion that the times I've felt uncomfortable with the way I was behaving, was more to do with dissatisfaction with the environment and company I was keeping rather than myself and my identities, so eventually I've taken action to change them. This led me to start thinking about why, for example, institutions, companies, communities, social networks seem to exhibit their own personality and employees, members or whatever can start to take on that personality and behaviours, which might be at loggerheads with their own individuality. How malleable is our individuality? How do we unearth that authenticity, when we strip away the masks and show ourselves devoid of external influences? And do these scenarios exist in bands? And especially in artistic or creative collaborations, which is really the very essence of individuality coming together, how do we as collaborators come together to achieve common goals?Neil Cowley has just released his first record (although it hadn't been released when we recorded this) with his two longstanding friends and cohorts who had so much acclaim as The Neil Cowley Trio prior to its hiatus 7 years ago. Their reunion and reconnection, and the making of this record, perhaps provides some answers to my most mind churning questions!https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. This week the children eschew the obscure and throw a bone to a classic by covering Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. From wiki: “The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written with novelist Diane Johnson. The film is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name and stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. The film's central character is Jack Torrance (Nicholson), an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the isolated historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies, with his wife, Wendy Torrance (Duvall), and young son, Danny Torrance (Lloyd). Danny is gifted with psychic abilities named "shining". After a winter storm leaves the Torrances snowbound, Jack's sanity deteriorates due to the influence of the supernatural forces that inhabit the hotel.” But also! Italian Greyhound Trouble, the best kind of cishet men, Henry Rollins and RuPaul, Parks & Rec, The Fisher King, Harold and Maude, Hairspray, Bergman Report returns with Summer with Monika, plus some spicy Stephen King takes, Sleepwalkers, the brown 80s, Hong Kong Phooey, Scatman, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Lolita, Babylon reappraisal, Pauline Kael, Dorothy Parker, and Bernie Sanders talking through movies. This week, GamerDude remembers some more of the things that he grew up with that have disappeared since he was a kid. He talks about how colored toilet paper was a thing, and how it was designed to match the colored fixtures in bathrooms back in the day. He also talks about how kitchen appliances used to have a variety of colors, from Harvest Gold to Avocado to Coppertone. He also remembers some of the weird flavors of Jello that used to exist. GamerDude also remembers Saturday morning cartoons, and how shows like Scooby Doo, Hong Kong Phooey and The Wacky Racers started on Saturday mornings. He also discusses how Disney wormed its way into our subconscious with its Superbowl commercials and its weekly Wonderful World of Disney shows. GamerDude also talks about Wite-Out and how it was the miracle eraser in a bottle. He also remembers one of the shows he grew up with: Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, which was one of the first nature shows. He talks about how he watched it every Saturday night.
W/C 14th March 2022 The day I had been dreading for a while actually arrived yesterday. And it was a bit like the voiceover at the beginning of Hong Kong Phooey...(you will have to imagine the voice) Why was this a day you weren't looking forward to? Was it the Dentist? Imagine Henry the mild mannered janitor shaking his head. Was it the first day back at work after a week off? Henry shaking his head again. Was it filling the car with diesel? Henry: "could be" At the point when the nozzle clicked I was at the princely sum of £111.99. I wandered into the kiosk to pay, and after asking for my nectar card the person behind the counter smiled empathetically and said she wasn't going to say the amount aloud because I already look traumatised enough, and was I paying by card. I had forgotten we had watched this movie. And now I have to remember that we did. I don't have to tell you that it is not a good movie. They sort of take some elements from the cartoon but they don't really go anywhere. And the poor guy that played Spike in Buffy is the villain but you know he was happy that the makeup made him unrecognizable. Emmy Rossum is in here too and some other realish people. And there is a turkey leg. We unpack it all.Hate Watching with Dan and Tony is a show that contains way too much Dan and Tony.#dragonball #anime #ouch #emmyrossumWatching some skateboarding at the Olympics. And these kids are 12 years old and killing it. When I was twelve I was watching Hong Kong Phooey and just trying to figure out how to do math. These kids are amazing and supportive and throw the idea that sports is just about competing against someone. These kids are striving to be their best. And it is damn impressive.

It's our third and final show covering Saturday morning TV from four decades ago, and we've arrived at NBC. The network offered an odd cartoon lineup in 1980, consisting almost entirely of reruns! Even Godzilla and his tricky pal Godzooky were in reruns at this point, along with Hong Kong Phooey, Daffy Duck, Jonny Quest, and more. Hanna Barbera's only new series was The Flintstone Comedy Show, a crazy revamp co-starring Captain Caveman, The Shmoo, and monster family The Frankenstones! Meanwhile Filmation supplied reruns of Batman (and Bat-Mite!) along with some long-forgotten heroes (Superstretch and Microwoman, anyone?) that eventually landed the studio in court for copyright infringement. But that didn't matter to the kids in 1980; we just chomped our Lucky Charms and watched it all... Hong Kong Phooey might be something you'd call something someone tries to sell you for an outrageous price as ancient Chinese wisdom. But in the 70's it was a vigilante kung fu fighting dog voiced by the legend himself Scatman Crothers. A couple years back there was talks of a Hong Kong Phooey movie in a similar style to the Scooby Doo Movies with Eddie Murphy cast to provide the voice of the title character. I don't like that so let's take 20 to cast the movie instead. Enlist today! Kathy Gori is a prolific voice over actor who has played some of the classic cartoon characters of all time but her most famous creation was Rosemary the Telephone Operator in the hit 1970s series Hong Kong Phooey. Started in 1974, it only ran for a short time but was repeated over and over again and became a staple diet for kids throughout the 70s and 80s. Produced by Hanna-Barbera it centred around Penry, the mild mannered janitor. Here Kathy tells MIM's Ashley Byrne how she found herself playing a cop in love with a dog in a kimono. Say Something Nice Podcast - Film, TV, and Music News & Discussion
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera are known for creating some of the most beloved funny cartoons ever, such as "The Flintstones" and "Yogi Bear." However, the animation dream team is also responsible for producing some of the most iconic animated action heroes as well, such as "Jonny Quest," Space Ghost," "SWAT Kats" and many more. The SSN Crew, along with returning guest Tim from the Kuroverse Corporation, recount the best and the worst of Hanna-Barbera's action-adventure shows, and how Cartoon Network and Adult Swim have revived these characters for a new era and new audiences. Today we start with a random fact providing skill that's all about Superman and then we lose our way quite a bit and end up at Hong Kong Phooey which I'm gratified to see has its own Wikipedia page.

Join me as I'm again joined by Jimmy B for a tender tale of romance about a fashion model and a lonely pizza-loving man named Marion. We compare it to other Stallone films, other '80s action we've done commentaries for, and Hong Kong Phooey. Actually the Hong Kong Phooey stuff might be slightly off-topic, along with our attempt to answer the age-old question: what is brown sauce? We don't like the film and mock it as it deserves and yet confess a deep affection for it in that it transcends the Steven Seagal/JCVD stuff that came after it and seem modeled on it. Get your axes and motorcycle and join our cult!
The 47th Book Slam podcast finds Elliott Jack and Salena Godden reading woodenly from what may be loosely described as a 'script'. They soon warm up, however, thanks to top dollar music from Tanya Auclair and Purple Ferdinand, top drawer prose from Chris Cleave and Marina Lewycka and top shelf poetry from Lemn Sissay and Roger Robinson. Elliott is a mild-mannered janitor, Salena is Hong Kong Phooey
