The election clearly did not go the way many of us wanted. I was on the TV news once again on Election Night and the morning after. The outcome wasn't the shock it was in 2016, but it's profoundly disappointing. Join me and Diane Diaz for this conversation on our thoughts and how we're moving forward (recorded on Wednesday, November 6 at 11 am EST). We too are sad and frustrated but we also want to remind you of the power of your voice and your community. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that America won't elect a woman as president or that voters don't care about women's rights. Two things to keep in mind. First, in both Missouri and Arizona (as well as other states - both blue and red - since the Dobbs decision in 2022), amendments passed to counter very restrictive abortion laws. Unfortunately, in Florida where I live, a similar amendment did not pass because Florida requires 60% and the amendment got 57% (a similar percentage as in the other states). A healthy majority of voters, both men and women, agree that women's reproductive rights are essential. Second, it was a *very* close race. Kamala Harris only had 100 days to do what most presidential candidates have 2 years to do: introduce herself to the American people, talk about the issues she would focus on as president, and contrast herself not only with her opponent but also with the incumbent (Biden) in an era of anti-incumbency sentiment. Harris ran a nearly flawless campaign and I believe she simply ran out of time. Hang in there. Your voice matters and the work you do matters. The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago this week and many Americans will be re-introduced to V.P. Kamala Harris when she delivers her speech on Thursday night. I have a background in local Democratic politics and have always been a strong supporter of women running for office. Earlier this summer, we held in-person workshops for women who are running in the Central Florida area where we helped them with their public speaking and storytelling. It was a lot of fun and it showed me once again how powerful someone's personal story is! In this episode, I'm joined by two of those women, Jennifer Adams, who's running for U.S. Congress in Florida's District 7, and Sarah Henry, who's running for Florida State House in District 38. We talk about: Why they decided to run for office and the importance of asking women to run What it's like being a female candidate and having a public voice and presence Their stump speeches and how they tailor them based on the audience The surge of support and enthusiasm for V.P. Kamala Harris's campaign for President and what that tells us about the importance of authenticity The lessons they've learned about being themselves vs. trying to be someone they thought they should be What they learned about storytelling, taking up space, and messaging from the workshops we did with then The importance of donating to women candidates (find local women that you can donate to!) On this episode of "Ford News," Johnathan and Brian are blown away by the enthusiasm that Vice President Kamala Harris is fueling a week into her run as the presumptive Democratic nominee. I've come to believe that those works of literature and poetry that have stood the test of time have more to offer those seeking a meaningful life than all the self help books in the world. They have the ability to bypass the protective walls that so many of us build around our gentle, scared and vulnerable hearts - those walls that stand firm and umoveable in the face of seeming frontal assaults by the well meaning self help books (which, tellingly, often reference those works to make their point). This is so, it seems, because they speak to us through stories and myths that set themselves in our hearts and minds - ready for recall when we are ready to learn, much like Christ's reason for teaching in parables: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Also, I believe that the reason these great works of literature and poetry persist is because they were inspired by and deal with the human condition - the basics of which remain constant as evidenced by the fact that the adventures of Odysseus still permeate our culture, whether in print, on stage or on film ("O, Brother Where are Thou?" - classic) more than 2,500 years after Homer handed them down. "The Odyssey" and "The Illiad" persist because the same passions that ran through the veins of Homer run through ours and, more importantly, he, like the great writers throughout history, had the gift to genuinely infuse that passion into his stories and characters. ("East of Eden" in my hands or probably in most hands, for instance, wouldn't have even found a publisher, but in Steinbeck's hands, we were given as powerful a story/lesson as I've ever read.) So, we feel their pain with defeat and their joy with victory. We relate when they stumble and fall from grace, and as a result, we don't feel so alone in our brokenness. The same can be said for the enduring stories, poems and mythologies of all cultures: they endure because they resonate with our humanity and they remind us what it means to be human. And then, when we are ready, we can find in them comfort or learning or both as has so many people before us. In episode 18 of The Poet (delayed), read my poem, "I'm a Poet" and I am joined by Salt Lake City based author, poet, editor and my new friend, Jennifer Adams. I read my poem, "I'm a Poet," and Jen and I discuss the power of literature and poetry as well as her newest of book, "All's Right With the World," inspired by Robert Browning's poem, Pippa's Song, which will be released March 7, 2023. It can be pre-purchased at The King's English Bookshop (https://www.kingsenglish.com/book/9780062962485) and Barnes and Noble (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/alls-right-with-the-world-jennifer-adams/1141622696;jsessionid=30D4A4FFB656EF3237C0CC83D1AA35BC.prodny_store02-atgap02?ean=9780062962485) I'M A POET I'm a wordsmith. Wielding my Montblanc hammer On my Moleskine anvil. I shape words and forge them together. Quenching them in my inky oil to temper them. To make them hard for breaking souls. I'm a word weaver. Weaving on my parchment loom, I guide the weft threads of metaphors Through taut warp threads of nouns and verbs. Resulting in a strong, velvety weave For binding up broken souls. I'm a painter. My palette is full of words for mixing: Some fresh and liquid, some dry and hard. At times I work them smooth and technical (Vermeer in verse). Other times raw and passionate (Van Gogh in verse) Each painting with an Abrahamic number of interpretations. I'm a wordsmith I'm a weaver I'm a painter I'm a poet. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. If you're interested, my first book of poetry, My Mother Sleeps is available for purchase at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Scott-R.-Edgar/e/B0B2ZR7W41%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share) and The King's English Bookshop (https://www.kingsenglish.com/search/author/%22Edgar%2C%20Scott%20R.%22) Special Guest: Jennifer Adams.

Over the course of the Be Better Podcast, Donald and Kim have had the opportunity to interview many great people to understand how they've achieved their personal and professional success. In today's episode, we revisit some of our favorite episodes and the takeaways we can apply to our own lives. Our mindset toward life can be a powerful motivator: Josh McGrath stressed how important it is to create our own path and reach for our dreams, even when others tell us no. Don't let others' insecurities dictate your mindset. Sherry Chris's episode was remarkable. It was fascinating to learn about her journey from banking to real estate, all the way to her current role as CEO. She forged her path and overcame every obstacle she encountered. Jennifer Adams was an interior designer, but she didn't start that way - she started out cleaning houses! However, her desire to do something more inspired Jennifer to find a way to make it happen. Financial success is attainable for everyone with the proper knowledge and toolset. Abhi Golhar talked about what we didn't learn from school about wealth. His main takeaway? Learning how to budget and set financial goals helps create generational wealth. Mallorie Denmon started doing something completely different in life, and she's now a real estate agent for Better Homes and Gardens®. She not only transitioned her career but did so during COVID, a difficult time for many people. Guy Kawasaki discussed the key points to becoming a successful entrepreneur. He explained that our first job or investment might not be a big success. However, taking calculated risks is the best way to find success. If you have something you want to share with the world, do it! Our closing thoughts for this episode? We're excited for things to come. Apply these learnings to your lives, and let us know how they foster growth in your personal and professional pursuits! While many people start with the resources to achieve greatness, others work to make their dreams happen. (Today's guest is someone who falls into the latter category.) In this episode of the Be Better podcast, Donald is joined by interior designer Jennifer Adams to discuss her humble beginnings and how she shifted her perspective to achieve worthwhile goals through realizing her intentions. When Jennifer started her business, she had no confidence. It took time for her to realize she had the skills and talent to charge people more money for her work. Everybody has to start somewhere. No matter where you're at in life, there's time for you to pursue your dreams. It's challenging to imagine successful people just starting out in their careers, but they all started somewhere. And if they can do it, so can you! Creative and service people are the first to undervalue themselves. Remember your worth. Understanding intention: The dictionary has several different meanings for intention. To Jennifer, she considers it the emotion and driving force behind what you do. If your end goal doesn't match your intentions, the process doesn't feel good. When Jennifer sets goals, she images what she wants her life to be like and creates goals with that image in mind. If there are negative or unsatisfied feelings, she reassesses her goals to see what needs changing. Use intention to build a reality: When she began her interior decorating business, Jennifer felt unfulfilled. She was going through the motions. Once you set intentions, expand your vision to make it as big as possible. You might not accomplish the goal today, but you can break that goal into stepping stones. If you have negative thoughts, write them down to help notice and repress them if they occur again. Jennifer looked at how Martha Stewart expanded her business beyond catering. Then, she took notes and looked at how she could apply those stepping stones to her own career. Just because something has been done before doesn't mean it can't be done better. A frequent limiting belief is the lens of envy and jealousy instead of being joyful for another person and drawing inspiration from them. It's all about catching yourself in a negative mindset and determining what you need to do to fix it. Brainstorm all the things you can do to reach your goal, and then put that goal into action. Reaching milestones will bring you the joy and confidence to continue. If you believe in your own success, others will too. Jennifer's advice to young professionals: If you have the desire, you can and will make it happen no matter your background or circumstances. It just starts with that initial desire. You can do it!
