Barry a enregistré son premier disque à l'âge de 16 ans avec un groupe appelé les Upfronts. La chanson s'appelait "Little Girl" sur un label local de Los Angeles appelé Lummtone Records. In Jonathas de Andrade's work (1982, Brazil), performance occupies a key role. His inquiry into the social and political realities of northeastern Brazil has underlined the power of bodies to store and transmit information through their gestures and actions. Only belatedly considered forms of knowledge, nonverbal practices have been historically important in preserving and contesting norms in the Americas. In conversation with Diana Taylor (1950, MX/US), performance scholar, Jonathas gives us an insight into his creative process, his work with different communities in Brazil and the way their embodied practices have led him to understand better and intervene his present reality. Performance scholar and Associate Professor in the Dramatic Arts department at the University of Alberta Selena Couture joins Am Johal to talk about her latest book, Against the Current and Into the Light. Selena speaks about how her book explores varying historical and contemporary performances involving Stanley Park through language, relationships to land, and the unlearning of settler knowledges. She draws from colonial and counter-colonial performances such as the 1946 Jubilee show, and the public performances of Native Brotherhood of BC in the same year. Selena also explores how her doctoral dissertation and the taking of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language classes influenced the creation of her book, and speaks about the instability of archive-based “truths,” by discussing the fabricated history of Lord Stanley's dedication of Stanley Park to “people of all colours, creeds and customs.” Selena and Am end their conversation by speaking of the absence of Indigenous women from historical archives, and the resonating performances of contemporary Indigenous women artists such as Quelemia Sparrow and Marie Clements. In 2017, a scientist and her team of researchers completed a major study. They found that over the past four decades, sperm levels among men in Western countries have dropped by more than 50 percent. The result sent shockwaves around the globe—but the story didn’t end there. It turns out our sexual development is changing in broader ways, for both men and women and even other species, and that the modern world is on pace to become an infertile one. How and why could this happen? What is hijacking our fertility and our health? The scientist who led that research team, Dr. Shanna Swan, joined us with her coauthor Stacey Colino in a conversation facilitated by Town Hall Senior Correspondent Steve Scher to unpack these startling discoveries. As contained in her book Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race, Dr. Swan and her team examined 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. She and Colino shared what they discerned about how both lifestyle and chemical exposures are affecting our fertility, sexual development, and general health as a species. With accessible explanations of the threats and repercussions, they presents an urgent wake-up call to action in protecting our future. Shanna H. Swan, PhD, is an award-winning scientist based at Mt. Sinai and one of the leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists in the world. Dr. Swan has published more than 200 scientific papers and has been featured in extensive media coverage around the world. Her appearances include ABC News, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, CBS News, PBS, BBC, and NPR, as well as in leading magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek, The Washington Post, Time, and many more. Stacey Colino is an award-winning writer specializing in health and environmental issues and a regular contributor to US News & World Report. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post Health section and in dozens of national magazines, including Newsweek, Parade, Woman’s Day, Sports Illustrated, and Good Housekeeping. She is the coauthor with David Katz of Disease-Proof: The Remarkable Truth About What Makes Us Well; Strong is the New Skinny with Jennifer Cohen; Good Food Fast! with Jason Roberts; and Taking Back the Month with Diana Taylor. Steve Scher is a podcaster, interviewer, and teacher. He worked in Seattle public radio for almost 30 years. He has taught at the University of Washington since 2009. The devil is a defiant, nefarious figure, the emblem of evil, and harbinger of the damned. However, the festive devil—the devil that dances—turns the most hideous acts into playful transgressions. Edited by Milla Cozart Riggio, Angela Marino, and Paolo Vignolo, Festive Devils of the Americas (Seagull Books, 2015) presents a transnational and performance-centered approach to this fascinating, feared, and revered character of fiestas, street festivals, and carnivals in North, Central, and South America. As produced and performed in both rural and urban communities and among neighborhood groups and councils, festive devils challenge the principles of colonialism and nation-states reliant on the straight and narrow opposition between good and evil, black and white, and us and them. Learn more about festive devils here, and in the work of Rose Cano, who is currently studying how Peruvian devils manifest in Seattle, Washington. Of notable influence on this text is Leda Martins’ concept of spiral time, which you can learn more about in Martins’ chapter, “Performances of Spiral Time,” in Performing Religion in the Americas: Media, Politics, and Devotional Practices of the Twenty-First Century (Seagull Books, 2007). Milla Cozart Riggio is James J. Goodwin Professor of English Emerita at Trinity College. In one of the first episodes of Willis Talks, we get straight down to the serious issues. I'm joined by Dr Diana Taylor, Managing Director of Marketing Humber, otherwise known in the Humber region as Bondholders, and my colleague from Edenic Group, Rob Lewis. Diana talks to us about 'The Waterline', a campaign set up by Marketing Humber and the University of Hull to address the urgent need for decarbonisation in the Humber region. As the highest emitters of carbon in the UK, the Humber Region is at great risk of the effects of climate change and as a low lying estuary, the area is in serious danger of major flooding if we do not tackle this challenge head-on. Based on Bill Gates' 'Five Grand Challenges' The Waterline has been set up to explore innovation, ideas and bring the region together to find solutions for decarbonisation of the area. The Waterline Summit, an exhibition and seminar event has been set up to kick off the decarbonisation journey. Diana explains how we all need to unify and come together to address an issue that affects us all and help the Humber region be the catalyst for global change, as well as leverage the commercial opportunities that can come from meeting the climate change challenge, head-on.
