The 40 hour work week in New Zealand was largely cemented in the 1930's. It was argued it would increase work opportunities in an economic depression. French law on the other hand defines the full time work week as 35 hours. Last year 45 German companies took part in a four day work week trial and one US police department has also given it a go. Charlotte Lockhart, is the co-founder of Four Day Week Global, an organisation prompting a shift to shorter hours. Lockhart spoke to Lisa Owen.

Dr. Laura welcomes author, entrepreneur, and pioneer of the 4 day week movement, Andrew Barnes, to the show to examine the benefits of his innovative 4 day work week movement. Andrew explains why he originally piloted a 4 day week and how that led to a global research program involving academics from leading universities. Would this benefit us? And in what ways would we realize that benefit?Dr. Laura's conversation with Andrew Barnes starts with the big question: how can fewer days lead to more productivity? Andrew first defines what productivity is before diving into how the 4 day week can change our work-life wellness. It's clear from the statistics and research Andrew shares that the 4 day week is a viable alternative companies should be considering. Rather than reducing one's pay to 80%, people are paid their full-time salary but complete their work over 4 instead of 5 days. This reduced workweek increases productivity and efficiency, leading us to have more control over our time,  in turn improving our health and wellness. Dr. Laura and Andrew Barnes have a compelling discussion that will change the way we perceive work structure.“So one of the most interesting pieces of research that we run is when we've had people on a four day week, and at the end of the pilot we ask them: how much do I have to pay you to go back to five days from four days? And about 15% say you just physically can't pay me enough, just not doing it. About another 15% will need a 75% pay rise. And then, you know, a large chunk of them are going to need about 50%. So what that says is that an employee values the time off at a higher price than you are actually paying for it.” Andrew BarnesAbout Andrew Barnes:Entrepreneur Andrew Barnes has made a career of market-changing innovation and industry digitisation leading and transforming companies in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. In 2018, he made international headlines across the world with an idea that he believed would raise productivity in the workplace, while also contributing to the personal wellbeing of his staff – a 4 day work week. Through his company – New Zealand's largest corporate trustee company, Perpetual Guardian – Andrew announced a 4 day week trial, with staff receiving an extra day off work, on full pay, each week. The trial was an undeniable success, sparking widespread international interest and winning a number of global awards. Today, Barnes is considered the pioneer and architect of the global 4 day week movement. As co-founder of 4 Day Week Global with his partner, Charlotte Lockhart, they are conducting the largest ever trials, currently taking place across the UK, US, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. More than 250 companies around the world with over 100,000 staff are taking part in the trials to change their workplaces combined with a global research programme involving academics from leading universities including Boston College, Cambridge, Oxford and many more. Additionally, in the last 4 years Andrew has worked with companies such as Unilever and has been part of the advisory process for close to a dozen country and regional governments who are all effecting change to the way their populations will work now and in the future. Recently he was recognised Introducing The Forbes Future Of Work 50 as a leader in workplace innovation. Andrew and Charlotte's vision is to provide a community environment for companies, researchers/academics and interested parties to be able to connect and advance this idea as part of the future of work. Through this work he is on the advisory boards of both the US and Ireland 4 day week campaigns and the board of the newly created Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford University and is a founding member of the World Wellbeing Movement. In 2019 he wrote The 4 Day Week book, as a how to guide for companies trying to reduce work hours and increase productivity.Resources:Website: 4DayWeek.comAndrew Barnes on LinkedIn“The 4 Day Week” by Andrew Barnes with Stephanie Jones“The Worst Journey in the World” by Apsley Cherry-GarrardLearn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.liveFor more resources, look into Dr. Laura's organizations: Canada Career CounsellingSynthesis Psychology

A dynamic and growing group of companies and organizations are moving to a 4 day work week. Andrew Barnes is the pioneer behind this movement. It all started with an experiment to see what would happen if his team worked 4 days instead of 5. The results were so breathtaking that he never looked back. Now there's an entire organization - including research, a book, and tools - dedicated to making the work world more efficient.   Through his company – New Zealand's largest corporate trustee company, Perpetual Guardian – Andrew announced a 4 day week trial, with staff receiving an extra day off work, on full pay, each week. The trial was an undeniable success, sparking widespread international interest and winning a number of global awards. Continuing our season long thread on creating work/life integration, this conversation is an excellent primer for both employers and employees on creating a 4 Day Work Week. Andrew is the literal pioneer of this movement so I invited him to BTB to discuss how it was born, the concerns many leaders have, why the movement has picked up steam, and how you – whether you're a leader or a team member – can use these ideas to create a more sustainable and effective approach to work. We spent a lot of time at the top of this conversation exploring Andrew's background because I think that context is important once he starts discussing the 4 Day Work Week. That said, if you want to skip to the topical portion, it begins around minute 25. I am certain you've heard that a 4-day work week is gaining traction coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic with employers. Not only has the Work-from-Home experience taught many employers that office workers can be as productive from anywhere, there is growing evidence that shows workers are more happy and engaged when they have an extra day each week. While the research is not definitive and there are many caveats to the perceived benefits of a 4-day work week (e.g., certain businesses cannot be fully adapted to a shorter work week), the organization, 4 Day Week Global has been undertaking pilots in the UK and the results seem promising. In this conversation, I talk to Charlotte Lockhart, co-founder of 4 Day Week Global to hear some of the benefits that have been found. We're looking at your business processes to figure out how you can deliver the same output with fewer and more efficient inputs.”The 5-day work week has been a familiar concept since the early 1900s, and it's hard to imagine life without it. But the 5-day week concept was originally designed with the idea that the working individual had a spouse at home to take care of the domestic duties, and this isn't nearly as common today. This leads to a burnt-out workforce with an uneven work-life balance. In comes the concept of a 4-day work week – but how would you implement it? In this episode of Oven-Ready HR I take a closer look at an innovative employment model that's growing in popularity around the world.  The 4 Day Week is a reduced-hour working model, which seeks to prioritise working smarter to produce better business productivity and positive employee outcomes such as employee retention, engagement and reduced absence levels.Joining me to discuss this growing work-trend is Charlotte Lockhart, co-founder of 4 Day Week Global – a not-for-profit community for those individuals and organisations keen to explore new ways of working. Charlotte herself is a business advocate, investor and philanthropist. She's on the board of the  Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford University and the advisory boards of the US and Irish campaigns for the 4 Day Week. How does the 4 Day Week Work? [01:15]Charlotte explains the principle behind the 4 Day Week. Workers are paid 100% of their wages for only working 80% of the time whilst providing 100% productivity. The idea is to reduce the amount of work time by focusing on productivity. After all if productivity is maintained why should pay be reduced? How do businesses boost productivity? [02:11]Boosting productivity is notoriously difficult. Charlotte explains that within a business environment, the answers are found in the micro-environment; for example how many widgets are produced, how many meetings are called but most importantly work with your employees as they will help you identify time-saving efficiencies. Are some employees resistant to change? [07:11]Charlotte explains that there are always employees who confuse productivity with being ‘busy' but as she says “busy is not productive” and working 80 hours a week is not a badge of honour. She goes on to explain that millennials and the generations that follow view work in a different way and don't want to work the hours their parents did. Can the 4 Day Week work across all sectors? [20:00]Yes is the simple answer.  Charlotte gives an example of a bus company in New Zealand where one of the routes operated attracts very few passengers but is convenient for the company to use.  Her argument is that if you talk to your workers and your customers efficiencies can be found that won't affect the level of service. At [23:01], Charlotte further explains that it's dangerous to assume that no sector couldn't benefit from revieing the way work is structured or organised. Meetings are the enemy of productivity [24:21]‘No Agenda No Attender' is the mantra Charlotte quotes when it comes to meetings.  She explains the changes she made at her own firm to reduce time spent on these fruitless interactions. She further illustrates how people eating lunch at their desk and the use of open plan offices has a detrimental effect on individual productivity.Resourceshttps://www.4dayweek.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlottelockhartnz/https://ovenreadyhr.com

“We have to remember that we borrow our people from their lives,” explains Charlotte Lockhart, founder and CEO of 4 Day Week Global, a not-for-profit community promoting the benefits of a productivity-focused and reduced-hour workplace. In today's episode of Problem Performers, Charlotte discusses how reducing the work week actually increases productivity. Charlotte's 4 Day Week Global community focuses on bringing pilot programs into businesses to demonstrate the effectiveness of a reduced work schedule. The 40-hour work week was designed at a time when life looked very different for most employees. With the increased connectivity and workloads of modern life, it is no longer a well-balanced solution for most businesses. By reducing the length of the work week, business owners can reduce stress and burnout levels in their employees, and increase their efficiency as a result. Tune into this week's episode of Problem Performers for a conversation with Charlotte Lockhart and host Rebecca Weaver about the impact a reduced work week could have on your business, and how to broach the idea with your boss. Learn more about Charlotte's pilot program and the ways businesses can adapt to better value their employees' time.   Quotes  • “Life is shorter than you might think, often, and when I mean that it's not just your physical life, but we turn around and in the blink of an eye our work life is gone.” (04:21-04:32) • “In the end, what we're talking about when we're talking about the four-day work week or some form of reduced-hour work week is we're talking about rebalancing the place that work has in our lives. If we think about it, when we first had the 40-hour work week…our society was constructed differently. We didn't have laptops and cellphones, and generally it was just dad that went to work, and he was generally home for family meals, and mum did the children and the community and charity stuff.” (05:44-06:28) • “Work's place in our lives has gotten out of proportion to where it should have been, even with the 40-hour week. So the conversation we're having with people is actually, how do we rebalance that life for ourselves?” (06:54-07:07) • “When I'm talking to employers I say, ‘We have to remember that we borrow our people from their lives'....If you take that attitude to your employment and into your environment, then actually you've got to think, ‘Okay, so if the bit of someone's life that I have them for is to give me a productive outcome, then how can I do that with them that means that they can have more time away from work.” (07:11-07:50) • “At its heart, our program is a productivity-gaining program. We say to people ‘you need to join together with your people to find ways to do what your business does in less time. How you do that really will be up to the business, your people, and your customers'...It's about management and business owners recognizing that they're in partnership with their employees.” And when you treat that relationship as a partnership and respect each other in a partnership-style role, you'll actually drive things better. And that's what all the successful companies do.” (08:01-08:48) • “We've been talking about health and safety in the workplace for so long now, but really, it's just been safety. And so the pandemic has given us a renewed focus on how we can work. Who'd have thought that you can run your business from home?” (11:08-11:29) • “The people are choosing their workplace, not the other way around. And this is a significant shift, and it's global.” (13:06-13:17) • “Even though in our employment contracts it says ‘you will work these days, and you will work these hours, and we'll give you this amount of time off,' even though our employment contracts largely are around time, what we're really employing people to do is an output. An outcome. We're looking for what you're going to give me, and what's your productive outcome. So what we're doing is we're shifting from measuring time to valuing time.” (18:47-19:18) • “Leadership's job in (adopting a 4-day week) is to decide to do it. And then there's a full stop. Because actually, the only people who can truly work out how to make this a success are your team…The companies that have either look at this and then not run a pilot, or have started it and then stopped doing it, all got to that position because the C-suite got in the way.” (21:00-21:51) • “In your workforce at any time, between one in four and one in five [people] in your workforce have a workplace stress or mental health issue. And that's probably greater with all of us coping with life post-pandemic…So those people are already not performing to a very high standard, because you just can't. And we know that burnout rates are skyrocketing, and unprecedented. And of course, somebody that's leading up to a burnout looks like they're hyperproductive because there's a bit of a manic phase that goes in before burnout…You only know you're burning out when you've burnt out.” (23:14-24:05) • “If you give (employees) more time to recover and more time to look after themselves, more time to eat well and exercise and engage with community, and engage with all of the things that top us up whether it be physically or emotionally or mentally, then they will perform better for you in the time that they are with you. And so by giving people, for example, Wednesday off, then you are going to get better productivity out of them for the rest of the time.” (24:40-25:14) • “You run a reduced-hour 4 day week pilot in your business, you're going to get a more productive business, more profitable business, and a happier workforce, and it won't have cost you a cent. So it's kind of like a win-win.” (28:47-29:03)   Links https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlottelockhartnz/ www.4dayweek.com   Connect with an HRuprise coach at https://www.hruprise.com/   Follow us on social media:  • Twitter: https://twitter.com/hruprise • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hruprise/ • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRuprise/ • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hruprise/

4 Day Week Global is a not-for-profit community established by Andrew Barnes and Charlotte Lockhart to provide a platform for like-minded people who are interested in supporting the idea of the four-day week as a part of the future of work. This idea was born out of the waves of attention we received from around the world in reaction to our successful program launched at Perpetual Guardian in 2018.We encourage business, employees, researchers, and government to all play their part in creating a new way of working which will improve business productivity, worker health outcomes, stronger families and communities, challenge the gender equality issue, and work towards a more sustainable work environment.
