In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Mr. Ivan Kanapathy joins us to discuss what Donald Trump's second administration's Indo-Pacific strategy may look like and the ways in which Trump redefined the U.S. relationship with China during his first term. Mr. Kanapathy shares that a second Trump administration will likely show high continuity from his first and speaks to how Trump will have to deal with a more aggressive China this time around but that many of the measures the Trump administration put in place during his first term have served to weaken China throughout the last few years. Mr. Kanapathy provides his assessment that the Trump administration will likely maintain many of the same objectives from the Biden administration, specifically in prioritizing U.S. security and prosperity as well as maintaining strong relationships with our allies and partners. However, he shares that Trump will likely place a larger emphasis on reducing freeriders and on leveling the planning field through increased burden sharing. Mr. Kanapathy shares his thoughts on Trump's proposed economic policies towards the region and his view that Trump's tariffs on China during his first administration were highly successful in diversifying U.S. imports and making goods from allies and partners, rather than China, more attractive. He explains his view that the U.S. needs clearer leadership and a more concrete strategy towards China that includes a model of deterrence without assurances. Finally, Mr. Kanapathy explains that the next administration should seek positive sum competition with China, rather than cooperation, and explains that rather than mil to mil cooperation, leader level meetings will be more effective.   Ivan Kanapathy is a senior vice president with Beacon Global Strategies. From March 2018 to July 2021, he served on the White House's National Security Council staff as director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia and deputy senior director for Asian affairs. From 2014 to 2017, Ivan worked at the American Institute in Taiwan, representing U.S. interests and advising on military and security issues in Taipei. Earlier in his career, Ivan spent a year studying in Beijing and traveling throughout China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia as a U.S. Marine Corps foreign area study fellow; he later led the development and implementation of the service's global security cooperation strategy and policies at the Pentagon. As a naval flight officer, Ivan accumulated 2,500 flight hours, served three years as a F/A-18 weapons officer and tactics instructor at the U.S Navy Fighter Weapons School (better known as TOPGUN), and deployed to the Middle East and Western Pacific five times, earning several combat awards and decorations. He holds a MA (with distinction) in East Asia security studies from the Naval Postgraduate School, a BS in physics and economics from Carnegie Mellon University, and an AA and diploma (with highest honors) in Chinese – Mandarin from the Defense Language Institute.

I enjoyed my conversation with LCDR John Doyle, USN (ret.), at the time of the recording, a Defense Intelligence Agency contractor. John and I deployed together back in the day and served in some of the same classified units. He was awarded the Air Medal for operations in the War on Terror and many other awards and citations. He started out his Navy career as an enlisted man, studying Chinese Mandarin language and culture (official Beijing accent Mandarin) 10 to 12 hours a day, going through all the training required for that . Late in his career he developed a little bit of a speech impediment during his active service. Yet the impediment is not an indication of a lack of mental sharpness. I knew him before new speech cadence that he has now and to me he seems just as sharp as he was back then. It was good to reconnect. The Republican Professor is a pro-Veteran's-Day, pro-Navy podcast. Therefore, welcome Lt. Commander John Doyle, qualified in multiple warfare platforms, Air Medal awardee, United States Navy, retired. The Republican Professor is produced and hosted by Dr. Lucas J. David C. Benson, Stop Selling Cybersecurity Short!: Cybersecurity as a Component of National Power

CERIAS Security Seminar Podcast

Often, policy makers and cybersecurity professionals talk about cybersecurity as if cybersecurity is only important insofar as it benefits or protects other assets or values. For example, it is common to hear people argue that cybersecurity is important because of its role in economic growth, or potential damage military operations. Those arguments are not wrong, but they fail to understand national power, and consequently grossly understate cybersecurity's importance in international politics. Information is a component of national power all on its own, and cybersecurity is an important part of that component. Properly situating information as a component of national power, and cybersecurity in its appropriate place within information will better inform policy and practice. Informational considerations should hold equal weight in national policy, and not be subordinated military or economic concerns. As a component of information power, cybersecurity operates alongside other components of information power, and should cooperate with, and learn from those components of informational power. About the speaker: David Benson is currently a Professor of Security and Strategic Studies at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS) at Air University, Montgomery, AL. His research and instruction focuses on international relations and information, especially how the internet and information technology affects great power politics. His publications include "Why the Internet is not Increasing Terrorism," "Cyber-balancing not Cyber-War," and "Mahan and Corbett will not Inform War with China." David graduated from the University of Chicago, and held a post-doctoral appointment at Southern Methodist University. David served six years in the US Army, first as a Chinese-Mandarin linguist and then as an infantry officer. After completing a tour in Iraq, David worked with JIEDDO-COIC to develop and teach counter-insurgency strategy.

Happy Mother's Day weekend and start of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month! To celebrate, we had two incredibly special guests on our show... our moms! Because we recorded the episode with them in Chinese (Mandarin), we also recorded this shorter English recap for those who do not speak our moms' native tongue. With that said, if you do speak Mandarin, feel free to either listen to the Mandarin audio version, or watch the English-subtitled / Mandarin audio video on YouTube! (The latter is what we encourage all of you to do, in fact, so you can get the legit stories from our moms themselves :)) We get to know our moms better in terms of what their childhoods were like back in Taiwan, what they wanted to be when they were younger, what they thought of our dads when they first met them (lol), the hardships they went through both growing up and eventually immigrating to the U.S., what their hopes and dreams are now, some fun stories from back in the day, and much more. Tune in to get to know both Mama Lins better, and we encourage you to go out and ask your mamas more about their lives too :) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/butwhereareyoureallyfrom/support

Exposing the inner workings of economic imperialism. During today's episode, we discuss how the Dollar circulates around the globe and shifts the world's wealth towards the U.S. and the West. We also review how the U.S., U.K., and Europe are able to freeze Russia's Dollar assets and how foreign reserves work. Lastly, we discuss how the Third World is still being colonized today and how the West is able to afford social welfare programs. Today's guest is Tian Wong, a communist content creator who has been working with the Mango Press channel, run by Millenial British Marxists. Tian arrived in England in 1993, right after the fall of the Soviet Union. He grew up in the U.K., but he never saw himself as British. Tian has kept his Chinese identity and still speaks, reads, and writes fluent Chinese Mandarin. Unmasking Imperialism exposes imperialist propaganda in mainstream media. Hosted by Ramiro Sebastián Fúnez.

We have the pleasure of speaking to someone truly fascinating today! Eric Maddox is the person who led the team in the capture of Saddam Hussein. He has had a tremendous impact on the world and has received numerous prestigious awards for his achievements!   In this episode, Eric tells his story, talks about his experiences, shares his methodology for the art of Empathy Based Listening, and discusses how that methodology allowed him to track down the exact location of the spider hole in which Saddam Hussein was hiding.  We hope you enjoy listening to our conversation with Eric Maddox today! Eric Maddox's bio Eric Maddox is an author, motivational speaker, and consultant who teaches audiences worldwide about the art of Empathy Based Listening. He is the author of the book Mission: Black List No.1 (Harper Collins, 2008), which details his lead in the search and capture of Saddam Hussein. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1994, Eric enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, a jump master, and a graduate of Ranger School. He then reenlisted in 1997 as a Chinese Mandarin linguist and interrogator. In 2003, he was sent to Tikrit, Iraq, where he joined a Delta Force team searching for high-value targets on the infamous Deck of Cards. After five months and over 300 interrogations, Eric was able to track down and eventually give the team the exact location of the spider hole in which Saddam hid. For this, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement, the Defense Intelligence Agency Director's Award, and the Bronze Star. Following the capture of Saddam, Eric was hired as the first-ever civilian interrogator by the Defense Intelligence Agency, where he went on to conduct over 2,700 interrogations of prisoners from 25 different countries. Having served in the U.S. Army and Defense Intelligence Agency for 20 years, Eric now devotes his work full time to teaching what he learned during that time to audiences worldwide—the art of Empathy Based Listening. Joining the military Eric grew up in Oklahoma. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in the late 1990s, he joined the U.S. Military, became a paratrooper, signed up to study Chinese Mandarin in the foreign language program, and trained to become an interrogator. He was working as an Intelligence Collection Officer against the Chinese government for the U.S. Military when 9/11 happened, and America went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.   Unexpected orders Three months into the war in Iraq, Eric received unexpected orders to join a Delta Force team to track down everyone in the infamous deck of cards in which Saddam Hussein was the Ace of Spades.  Interrogating prisoners After joining the Delta Force team, Eric began interrogating the prisoners that were brought in. Even though none of the techniques taught in the military about interrogation worked, Eric was determined to figure out what it meant to be Iraqi, Sunni, and Shiite.  Trust While listening to and communicating with the prisoners, Eric discovered that people subconsciously use communication to figure out how much they can trust one another. The challenge  Everyone has their biases and agendas. The challenge for Eric was to overcome his own biases and agendas, so he could understand the perspective of others and get to know what the world meant to them.  Empathy Based Listening He discovered that engaging with people on that level was empowering to them, and that level of empowerment was the key to making people willing to talk to him and work with him. He calls that Empathy Based Listening. Cooperation As a result of Eric focusing on the prisoners' needs and what he could do for them, the prisoners became extremely cooperative throughout the 300 interrogations with the Delta Force team. Finding Saddam  The cooperation of the prisoners led to the Delta Force team (that Eric was working with) capturing Saddam Hussein's bodyguard. The bodyguard then led the Delta Force team directly to the spider hole where Saddam was hiding.  The first civilian interrogator for the Defense Intelligence Agency As a result of the capture of Saddam, Eric got pulled out of the United States Army. Then, the Defense Intelligence Agency hired him as their first civilian interrogator.  The art of listening Over the following ten years, Eric did 2700 interrogations and eight deployments of prisoners from 25 different countries. In all the interrogations, he focused on the art of listening. A clear picture When you listen to someone's story, remove the biases of how you see their story. Then you will get a clear picture of how they see the world and how the world matters to them. How to listen to someone if you want to sell them something To sell something to someone, let them know that you are listening to them to get them. Once you have established that, they will tell you what they want and need without asking about the price. Eric's Influence Equation Add your value proposition to the level of respect you show someone and the worthiness you see in them. Put that into the power of the empathy-based trust you have built with them, and divide all of it by what you fear in your relationship with them. (We tend to fear not making a connection or not understanding what someone needs.) Eric's process Eric has a six-step process to get to understand people. The first step is to build their trust. Priorities If you are easily distracted, you need to have the priorities to guide your focus, because our brains cannot multitask.  Breadcrumbs (What you need to listen for when talking to a prospect) Listen for and focus on the words and statements in every sentence your prospect most wants you to hear.  Building trust To build the level of trust you need to make people want to partner with you, start your conversation with three minutes of empathy-based listening. Then, start picking up the breadcrumbs. Presentations at events Get to know what kind of overall experience the audience needs to get from the event. Then gear your presentation around that. Zoom Know that there is the potential for building as much trust with someone on Zoom as there is with meeting them face-to-face. Build the right mindset, stay focused, and prevent yourself from becoming distracted while talking.  Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Eric Maddox Email Eric: info@ericmaddox.com On his Website

In this episode, I interview Ashley Chen from BitcoinWisdomforBusyPeople.com. I met Ashley in 2018 at the Crypto Valley Conference in Zug, Switzerland. Ashley's an engineer-turned-marketer, specialising in bridging the communication gap between technology and everyday people in diverse cultural and societal contexts. Her experience includes executing multilingual campaigns for Australia's largest telco and working in Switzerland's Crypto Valley on a prominent blockchain project. She grew up and was educated in a multicultural environment in Australia and is fluid between different cultures, speaking English and Chinese Mandarin. Ashley now dedicates her time and energy to helping the global Chinese-speaking community learn about Bitcoin. Her company is an authorized Bitbox02 hardware wallet reseller in Asia. Hey guys! Welcome back. In this episode, I talk to a first generation American who is from my hometown of El Paso Texas. He went from extreme poverty, only speaking Chinese & Mandarin and eating one-egg sandwiches everyday in elementary school to now knowing five languages, becoming one of the youngest ever partners at Deloitte and a successful serial entrepreneur. His name is David Chen and I know you will absolutely love his story. This is part one of a two part interview. Enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/karla687/support
