Elämme entistä visuaalisemmassa maailmassa, jossa sosiaalinen media tuo silmiemme eteen loputonta kuvavirtaa. Millainen teos saa meidät keskittymään ja pysähtymään? Miten Vuoden nuori taiteilija Man Yau ottaa kantaa taiteellaan henkilökohtaisella ja yhteiskunnallisella tasolla? Mitä Man Yau haluaa kertoa tämän teoksen kautta? Mistä chinoiserie on esimerkki syvemmällä tasolla? Ohjelman juontajana on Pia-Maria Lehtola

The relationship between Britain and China has shaped the modern world. Chinese art, philosophy and science have had a profound effect upon British culture, while the long history of British exploitation is still bitterly remembered in China today. But how has their interaction changed over time? From the early days of the East India Company through the violence of the Opium Wars to present-day disputes over Hong Kong, Kerry Brown charts this turbulent and intriguing relationship in full. Britain has always sought to dominate China economically and politically, while China's ideas and exports—from tea and Chinoiserie to porcelain and silk—have continued to fascinate in the west. But by the later twentieth century, the balance of power began to shift in China's favour, with global consequences. Brown shows how these interactions changed the world order—and argues that an understanding of Britain's relationship with China is now more vital than ever.

Shop DAWANG here There is something so undeniably gorgeous about the Qi Pao. The refined, structured tailoring. The divine hand-feel of silk brocade. As a Chinese American -- it's always been a shame to me that I felt I could only celebrate the beauty of my heritage's sartorial culture on rare occasions. You may have seen traditional Chinoiserie at weddings and graduations, but on a day-to-day Chinese Americans don a more "practical" and "casual" dress as dictated by our obviously euro-centric culture. In comes DAWANG -- a shining beacon of expressive hope for fashion-forward Chinese Americans who can finally fill this hole in their closet and their hearts. After taking a class on subcultures, Chinese-born Daisy Wang realized that nobody was making the type of elevated Asian streetwear that she wanted to consume—comfortable, ready to wear, and not a gimmick. DAWANG's brocade patterns in lavender, periwinkle, cobalt, and orange are sewn into practical streetwear silhouettes--allowing the wearer to enjoy the beauty and heritage of Chinese sericulture day to day. DAWANG (大王) means "Big King" and is a New York-based contemporary streetwear design brand that draws influences from East and West.
DAWANG is committed to celebrating a modern interpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics.
Later joined by her best friend Abby Li in 2022, with their similar background growing up, having absorbed aesthetics from both American and Chinese cultures, they meticulously joins traditional chinoiserie apparel and Chinese fabrics with Western tailoring techniques and trends. In addition to fostering a creative space for Chinese and Chinese Americans, Daisy and Abby's aim is to invite people of all backgrounds to partake in the beauty of #ModernChinoiserie. The intention to create a melting pot of culture surrounding modern Chinese streetwear is more than apparent in their diverse casting choices across runway and e-commerce models. Towards the end of the 16 century, the trade between the Asians and the Europeans flourished. As this happened, each of these trade partners fell in love with the native goods of their counterparts. One of their biggest interests for the Europeans is hand-painted china. This hand-painted ceramic kitchenware drew the interest of many people with its elaborate patterns and uniqueness. As such, many English potters decided to learn from the Asians to mass-produce this kitchenware. Along with a long list of failures came some resounding successes, one of which is the Blue Willow China. Blue Willow China, which depicts an elaborate Chinoiserie pattern, is a successful combination of English pottery and Asian motifs. Besides their seemingly mythological origins, many collectors value vintage Blue Willow China and actively search for them. The Fantasy Fan Magazine Presents: Writings of Clark Ashton Smith Clark Ashton Smith (1893 - 1961) Collected here are all of Clark Aston Smith's writings he submitted to The Fantasy Fan Magazine. The Fantasy Fan Magazine was a periodical dedicated to people professing their love of and celebrating fantasy and weird fiction. In addition to the opinion pieces and non-fiction articles, The Fantasy Fan also included many short stories and poems by some of the authors it celebrated such as H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. From the weird and creepy journeys to unknown worlds of "The Kingdom of the Worm" and "The Primal City" to the strange and haunting poetry of "A Dream of the Abyss" and "Necromancy" to the insightful essays on M. Roots and All

I'm speaking to Dr Cathryn Spence this week, about Thomas Robins, a painter who documented the country estates of the Georgian gentry in all their Rococo splendour. Robins captured images of this flamboyant age of outdoor design where gardens were laden with symbolism and crammed full of Chinoiserie, follies ruins and the latest imports of exotic animals and plants. Follow the story of Robins as he moves from jobbing fan painter to star of his own paintings, the development of the floral borders around his canvases, for which he's famed, and the evolution of the Georgian garden and what remains of this style today.  Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Fig wasps What we cover The artist Thomas Robins and when and where he worked What gardens looked like at the time Robins was painting What is a Rococo garden? Why Robins painted floral borders around his paintings How exotic species came to be included in these frames In the book, Cathryn references “the Rococo's requirement of asymmetry”. How did this manifest in Robins' artworks and in gardens?  Political themes in Georgian gardens Robins' botanical art How contemporary painters painted entire estates on one canvas Remaining examples of rococo gardens About ‘Nature's Favourite Child – Thomas Robins and the Art of the Georgian Garden' Thomas Robins the Elder (1716–1770) recorded the country estates of the Georgian gentry—their orchards, Rococo gardens, and potagers—like no other, with both topographical accuracy and delightful artistry, often bordering his gouaches with entrancing tendrils, shells, leaves, and birds. Robins's skill was honed by the delicacy required for his early career as a fan painter and is shown too in his exquisite paintings of butterflies, flowers, and birds. This ravishing and scholarly study emerges from many years' research by Dr Cathryn Spence, the curator and archivist at Bowood House who has also worked for the V&A, the Bath Preservation Trust, and the National Trust. This is the first full study of Thomas Robins since John Harris's Gardens of Delight, published in two volumes in 1978; Harris, in fact, made over all his research notes to Spence in 2005 when she embarked on her work. Chinoiserie is everywhere—a wooden bridge over the Thames, delicious kiosks in a garden, a view of Bath with sampans, and Chinese fishermen on the river. There are also fascinating views of Sudeley Castle and other great houses that incorporated more or less ruined monastic structures, destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Spence has tracked down many previously unknown paintings by Robins and sets his elusive life and work in the framework of his patrons. More detective story than art historical monograph, this lavish study delights in Robins's astonishing proficiency as a topographical, botanical, entomological and naturalist artist.  About Cathryn Spence Dr Cathryn Spence is a museum professional, lecturer and historic gardens and buildings consultant. After a career in London and Bath museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Building of Bath Museum, she is now Lord Lansdowne's consultant Archivist and Curator at Bowood House, Wiltshire. She has published several books on the architectural and social history of Bath, most recently The Story of Bath (2016). Her study of Thomas Robins is the culmination of over fifteen years research.  Cathryn has worked with the team at Painswick Rococo Garden, a site restored using Robins's paintings from 1984, for the last 5 years advising on the continuing heritage and conservation of the garden.  Links Nature's Favourite Child – Thomas Robins and the Art of the Georgian Garden by Cathryn Spence is available from John Sandoe Books or directly from the author. Today I'm talking with Aldous Bertram about his first book called "Dragons & Pagodas: A Celebration of Chinoiserie."  In case you're not familiar with the term, think about white porcelain dinnerware, lamps, vases... all with elaborate, vaguely Chinese illustrations on them.   He traces hundreds of years of the development of the Chinoiserie style, into what reads like a novel.  And then gorgeously illustrates all of the major motifs under the Chinoiserie umbrella.  I think you'll find him, and his subject, just as charming and delightful as I did!

The Sydney-based designer's interiors are colourful, patterned and always unexpected.

‘The Quarters’ in the grounds of Alresford Hall, near Colchester, was used as a picnic, fishing and boating lodge by Constable’s friend and patron, Major-General Francis Slater-Rebow and his family. Slater-Rebow’s father-in-law built the lodge during the 1760s in the fashionable Chinoiserie style at a time when garden pavilions were frequently used for informal parties. Slater-Rebow commissioned this cabinet picture and a larger companion picture, Wivenhoe Park, Essex (National Gallery of Art, Washington) during Constable’s visit there in July 1816. He returned to paint both works in late August–September. In a letter of 21 August 1816 to Maria Bicknell, Constable mentioned the ‘two small landscapes for the General’ and that one was a ‘scene in a wood with a beautifull little fishing house, where the young Lady (who is the heroine of all these scenes [Mary Rebow]) goes occasionally to angle’ (Beckett II, p. 196). He wrote again to Maria on 30 August describing his reception by the Slater-Rebows, who made him feel ‘quite at home. They often talk of you, because they know it will please me … I am going on very well with my pictures for them’ (ibid., pp. 198–99). Constable first made a detailed drawing of the subject (Royal Institution of Cornwall, Truro), which he used as a basis for preparing the painting. He showed the contrast between the natural landscape of the woodland and the artificiality of the oriental pavilion. He closely observed details during a late summer afternoon, such as the shadows of the trees, the reflections on the still water and the swallows in the sky (A. Inglis, ‘“The Quarters” behind Alresford Hall’,European Masterpieces: Six centuries of paintings from the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, Melbourne: National Gallery of Victoria, 2000, p. 136).
