Throughout our lives, we are all faced with various decisions, some more difficult than others. Once we've made the decision to follow Jesus, we're called to not only address Him as Lord but also to obey Him as Lord—choosing to give up our will to embrace His. Jesus submitted Himself to the will of the Father and was obedient to the point of enduring suffering so that we may have life. He knew that His temporary suffering would lead to sharing eternal joy with all who would be saved through Him. Tune in to find out what it looks like to surrender our plans for His, which always have a greater purpose than anything we could ever imagine!
It's easy to think there's plenty of time, but eternity is closer than we realize. For some, this life is the closest they'll get to heaven. For others, the best is yet to come. The world is desperate for good news, and if you've met Jesus, you've got some.
As followers of Jesus, we have the privilege of knowing that earth is not our forever home. Because of His sacrifice, we now have a home prepared for us in heaven, where we'll get to spend eternity with the Father. But if we're honest, when it comes to money, sometimes we live like this world is the only one that exists.
We often chase happiness, hoping our circumstances will align with each of our preferences and desires—but what if there's something better? Happiness comes and goes, depending on what happens. But joy? Joy is rooted in Someone who never changes. Tune in to this sermon to learn how to stop pursuing only temporary happiness and embrace unshakable joy today!
Jesus tells us in His Word that He came so that we may have abundant life. But many of us are only living a fraction of the life He desires for us! As disciples of Christ, we were created for more than survival mode. Take an honest look at your own life. Would you say that you're walking in His purpose and experiencing all that He has for you? Or are you just going through the motions? Tune in to find out how to make the most of every opportunity and give God glory as you...
Hebrews 11 NIV 1-38By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going… For he was LOOKING FORWARD to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God… They were longing for a better...
John was given a beautiful vision of the new heaven and earth. One day, Jesus will return as King, and He will vindicate His people who are found faithful.
When sin entered the Garden of Eden, we lost the perfect peace and security that we can find only in God's presence. Unholiness cannot dwell with holiness. So, because of the curse, we lost unity with God. Our connection was severed, and we could no longer see Him face-to-face.
How and why did human's develop self-awareness of what we know and don't know? How does it develop in relation to how we evaluate what other people know? What are the risks of cognitive bias tainting our ability to learn and self correct? In this episode, we have the interesting question of our own self-awareness, or Meta-cognition, to understand. For centuries philosophers have called on us to “know thyself”, but only now with the tools of modern neuroscience have we been able to scientifically quantify the way we consciously track our behaviour, performance, thoughts and knowledge. So today we'll be getting into why this is important for learning and error correction; we're going to talk about meta-cognition's use for “mind reading” I.e. tracking our confidence in others in their own knowledge, both friends and foes, fundamental for the evolution of our collaborative groups; the implications of cognitive bias blind spots in metacognition for updating our collective beliefs over time; also whether metacognition is proportionally correlated to intelligence; and how technology and AI has and will influence the future of our self-awareness, and whether it's convenient to try programming AI to be metacognitive too, or if that would invite disaster. For these matters there can be no better guest than University College London Cognitive neuroscience Professor, Stephen Fleming. He's the author of the 2021 book “Know Thyself, the science of self awareness”, and founder of the Meta Cognition Group at UCL, and the group leader of the Max Plank, UCL Centre for Computational Neuroscience. What we discuss: 00:00 Intro 05:15 Striking aspects of experience get you thinking. 08:00 ‘Know thyself' - a moral, social and spiritual responsibility 10:00 Lao Tsu - to think you know when you do not is a disease. 11:00 Tracking the quality of our performance, error correction and learning. 14:00 Cognitive offloading - compensating for our limitations. 14:30 Metacognition and intelligence are similar but different. 17:40 Inside-out modelling of the world influences your cognition. 20:45 The brain has confidence in colour - Subjective inflation in the periphery. 22:00 UCL metacognition lab experiments - confidence in performance. 25:20 Metacogntiive efficiency - skill in evaluating your success. 26:20 MRI scans of the processes of self-aware brain activity. 28:50 Sam Harris - Self-awareness in the brain vs Ego-self. 33:20 Mind reading/Theory of mind: Evaluation of others VS evaluation of myself. 38:50 Children's learning 43:40 Chris Frith - metacognition for collaboration: Balancing our own VS group evaluations. 44:30 Supremacy of collective knowledge 46:45 Why did self-awareness evolve? 51:30 The fight or flight mental state trumps self-reflective evaluation. 54:00 Stress blunts frontal cortex activity. 54:20 Modern life stress is not the same as the stress we evolved for. 57:20 We need self-reflection in stressful arguments but it's not available. 58:20 Education: re-presenting your ideas - an antidote to over confidence. 01:04:00 Left Brain Interpreter - lack of self-awareness of our cognitive bias. 01:10:00 Exacerbated confidence judgements in internet/social media information ecosystems. 01:14:40 Awareness of the inside out way we construct our view of the world could be positive for compassion. 01:17:10 Balancing long-term societal self awareness, with traditional short term one. 01:21:00 The influence of Ai and technology on our self awareness. 01:26:30 ‘Offloading' aids for cognition VS replacements for our cognition? Living for God is not just about having the right information…but did that INFORMATION produce TRANSFORMATION in us? As believers, each of us is a part of the body of Christ—one body with many members. We were created on purpose with a purpose, and every breath that we've been gifted by God is an opportunity to allow His Kingdom to fully reign in our lives. The reality is that, sometimes, we get comfortable and stop taking steps forward in our faith. But we have a responsibility to do something with the new life we've been given.
Matthew 7:21-23 NIV“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons...

When it comes to judging, it's in our nature… It's easy to point out the flaws in others while overlooking the areas we need to address, but when we do, we give the kind of judgment that we'd never want for ourselves. Jesus left us with clear instruction: don't be blind to your own sins. Take care of your own wrongdoing first, and only then can you see clearly to help those around you—lovingly calling one another out of sin and into Christ-likeness.
What would the world look like if we all treated one another how we want to be treated? While it's easier said than done when we attempt it in our own ability, we have the grace of a loving Father to help us do what would otherwise be impossible. It's a divine gift that God extends to us time and time again, regardless of our actions and whether or not we deserve it. In His goodness, He invites us to mirror that kind of boundless love and compassion toward others in the
Jesus left us with a command: “…do not worry about your life.” The reality is that we've all gotten caught in the quicksand of “what-ifs” and doubt when it comes to finances. But our Savior tells us that when we learn to think about money His way and place our trust in Him, we can close the door on worry! So, in a world full of uncertainty and trouble, how can we genuinely believe and rest in Jesus' promise to care for us and meet every single one of our needs?
When Jesus talked about money, He introduced a wildly controversial idea of having an eternal view of wealth and that money has the potential to have lasting, heavenly impact. That's still strange for many of us today because the world's view is to build and accumulate money and things that show our success—things that seemingly bring us comfort, security and even power.
Everything that we have is a gift. From the breath in our lungs to the food on our tables and clothes on our backs, we get to experience the generosity of our loving God each day. As His children, God wants to teach us not only how to fully receive His good gifts but also to be an extension of His generosity through the way we live. When we see and prioritize the needs of others, we begin to see the fullness of the life we were created for!
Matthew 6:1,4 NLT “Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”
All of us were born with a sinful, selfish nature. Apart from God, we are concerned and consumed by our personal plans and desires. There is a gap between what He wants to happen in the earth and what is currently taking place. But we are invited to help close the gap, to exalt a culture that's greater than our own: God's Kingdom
Prayer is a gift that God gives to His children. We are invited to meet with the One who pours out His love, goodness, mercy, and much more. In His presence, we are blessed to be able to focus not on what is broken in our lives but on the One who is whole. Tune in to learn more about the beauty of praying to our Father in our series, When You Pray.
We live in a world that's consumed with pride. When it comes to giving, people often give with a goal of being seen and impressing others. But God has enabled us to live differently! As followers of Jesus, we are empowered to give out of love for others and to bring honor to our Father. Tune in as we take a deeper look into giving in secret, which is the way God desires. Then let's be intentional about showing the love and generosity of Jesus in our day-to-day lives!
Jesus came to do what no one else could do—fulfill the law and set us free from sin and death. Because of His finished perfect work, we are now empowered to live life to the maximum in every area. Tune in to learn some of the greatest ways we can express our gratitude to God through a lifestyle of true worship!
We live in a world that is full of chaos and conflict, but Jesus is calling us to follow His lead and be peacemakers rather than peacekeepers. Pursuing peace is not easy, but with God's help, it's always possible! Tune in as we dive deeper into the Beatitudes and learn what it practically looks like to live out a life of peace.
God's mercies are new every morning! Through Jesus, we have been forgiven of our sins forever, and we have the blessed opportunity to follow His example. God is love, and mercy is loving in spite of sin. He has made a way for us to forgive others in the same way that He has for us. Tune in to learn more about how to live a life of mercy!
We all have a deep desire in our souls to feel fulfilled in life, and Jesus told us that we will experience His blessing when we seek righteousness above all else. But we live in a world that craves many things, where people look for happiness in power, love, and wealth, to name a few. So, where does a hunger and thirst for righteousness lead us? Tune in to learn how Jesus fills us completely and leaves us fully alive!
Jesus has extended a beautiful invitation for us to live out our true mission: to go into all the world and make disciples. God longs to fill the earth with His glory through all of creation—that includes you! He has given us, the Victory family, a God-sized dream. But how exactly has He called us to fulfill it? God is magnified when we fully embrace our unique callings and release what He's put in us for His glory in the world around us. Tune in to learn more!
We were created to reflect Jesus' true nature! At Victory, our desire as a church body is to individually and corporately become more like Him. We want the world around us to know Him through the way that we live and love. Tune in to learn more about the values of Jesus that we want to embody as a church family!
In Matthew 5:4, Jesus says these words: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” While grief can feel heavy and all consuming, He has promised us comfort when we choose to acknowledge it rather than numb the pain. When we allow ourselves to mourn, when we make space for the Holy Spirit to come in and help, we can rest assured that He will meet us right where we are and bring healing as He walks with us. We have the hope of true comfort in the One who has known grief for Himself but has overcome it all. We are blessed!
Biblical community is a beautiful part of God's design for our lives. He never intended for us to do life alone. He made us to thrive in godly relationships! That's where we find support, encouragement, and healthy accountability. We were made to do life together so that we can endure in every life season and remain anchored in our faith. Tune in to learn how you can engage in community!
Our youth need parents and others in the faith family to hear and respond to the desires of their hearts. They need those who can look beyond where they are right now and see them the way God does… And He wants to pour into them through you! We have a responsibility to show up as intentional examples to prepare our youth so they may become all God has destined them to be. Learn how to invest in the next generation in part two of Family on Purpose!
How we think about and handle money are some of the most important aspects of family life. They are major factors in how our families experience God's hand on us. Everything we have comes from Him. He graciously provides our needs and calls us to be good stewards over all He's blessed us with. And God's Word tells us that if we want true wisdom, all we have to do is ask Him. Tune in and learn how to handle money on purpose!
A ship makes it through a storm by dropping anchor, which makes it immovable in the wind and waves. In the same way, there are places where we can drop anchor when the storms of life try to take us off course. God's Word says that we will have troubles, but we will have peace when stay close to Him. With Jesus, we can be equipped to not just survive the storms but stand firm in them! When trials arise, we can go to the source of all life for the wisdom we need to navigate to the other side. Tune in as we learn more!
Many things in life will attempt to steal our affection, but God is the only One who can truly satisfy us. That's why He's so worthy of our worship! We can never repay God for His love and faithfulness, but we can show our gratitude when we devote ourselves to honoring Him. Listen in as we learn how to be anchored in the fear of the Lord!
Embracing the developmental process is an important part of walking in our purpose. God places us in different environments throughout our lives to develop our gifts, skills and character. He wants us to grow to become more like Him so that we represent Him well in a world that desperately needs Him. How do we begin to cultivate our unique God-given qualities so that He may be glorified wherever we go? Find out in part four of True North.

I'm back in the Betsey Trotwood pub with Alex Frith and this time the book club is entirely devoted to a guest project. Alex has created a graphic novel about neuroscience with his parents Uta and Chris Frith, and the artist Daniel Locke. It's a fantastic look at how our brains work, both by themselves, and in cooperation with others. We talk about the process of writing the book, and the collaborative process that reflects his parents' scientific endeavours. Order your copy from Bookshop.org or your local book shop. Brain Science with Ginger Campbell, MD: Neuroscience for Everyone
This month's episode of Brain Science is an interview with Dr. Stephen Fleming, author of "Know Thyself: The Science of Self-Awareness." We explore the concept of metacognition and learn that while explicit metacognition (thinking about thinking) may be unique to humans, it is built on building blocks shared with other species. We also explore what can go wrong and why it matters. In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew is joined by Stephen M. Fleming, the author of "Know Thyself: The Science of Self-Awareness" to discuss the vast potential of metacognition, why it is that we still so often get it wrong and how it can help us become smarter, make better decisions and lead more effectively. Steve is a Sir Henry Dale Wellcome Trust/Royal Society Fellow at the Department of Experimental Psychology, Prinicipal Investigator at the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, and Group Leader at the Max Planck-UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research. Steve received a first class BA in Psychology and Physiology at Oxford University (2003-2006) before completing a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL under the supervision of Ray Dolan and Chris Frith (2006-2011). He was awarded a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship to study with Nathaniel Daw at New York University and Matthew Rushworth at Oxford (2011-2015), focusing on computational models of metacognition. Steve's research has been recognized with the William James Prize from the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (2012), a "Rising Star" designation by the Association of Psychological Science (2015), the Wiley Prize in Psychology from the British Academy (2016), a Philip Leverhulme Prize in Psychology (2017) and the British Psychological Society Spearman Medal (2019). For forty years, Uta Frith has dedicated her life to understanding the enigma of autism; she was one of the first neuroscientists to recognise autism as a condition of the brain, rather than the result of cold parenting. She works at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, alongside her husband, Chris Frith, who’s a specialist in mapping the brain through neuro-imaging. Elected to the Royal Society in 2005, she’s passionate about encouraging more women into careers in science. When Professor Frith first published her influential research into autism in the 1980s, she says it evoked “strong emotional reactions”, and autism remains controversial today, as it is increasingly viewed not as a disability, but as simply a different way of seeing the world. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Uta Frith talks about the little boy she met very early on in her research who inspired her, and about why autism is so fascinating – because of what it reveals about the mystery of human communication. Music choices include works by Smetana, Hildegard von Bingen and Beethoven, a Berlin cabaret song from the 1920s, and a work by Professor Frith's great female role model, Clara Schumann. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3
In the podcast I talk about my research on the biological basis of schizophrenia using brain imaging and my attempts to understand symptoms such as hallucinations in terms of brain based cognitive processes. I describe what schizophrenia is like from the point of view of clinicians and from the point of view of patients. I suggest that the experiences described by patients in history are very similar to those described today. Finally, I discuss treatments. There has been much improvement since the discovery of drug treatments in the 1950s, but we still have not identified the causes of schizophrenia and, for the majority of patients, life remains very hard. Chris Frith is Emeritus professor of Neuropsychology and the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging at UCL and Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy.
Why do we have consciousness at all? Neuroscientist Chris Frith discusses this question with Nigel Warburton in this episode of Mind Bites which is part of a series made in association with Philosophy Bites for Nick Shea's AHRC-funded Meaning for the Brain and Meaning for the Person project.
Metacognition can be defined as thinking about thinking and Philosophical Transactions B has just published an issue highlighting the advances being made in research to measure and quantify metacognition, and understand its neural basis. In this podcast guest editors Steven Fleming and Chris Frith discuss what metacognition is.
Wendy Barnaby talks to Uta and Chris Frith about their article on how the brain affects social interaction and communication.
