The solo piano: a sound that's been evolving for over 300 years. It's perfectly happy all by itself, but it also plays exceptionally well with others. Flexible by design, the piano has been a mainstay in classical music and jazz, and a key element in traditional and popular music. With the arrival of ambient, minimal and new age music in the 1970s, the piano was expanded and dematerialized through studio magic, and combined with ambient and electronic textures to create spatial sound images. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the acoustic piano meets ambient atmospheres, on a program called CONFLATION. Music is by JON HOPKINS, TALE OF US, BEN LUKAS BOYSEN, ROBERT RICH & MARKUS REUTER, HAROLD BUDD & CLIVE WRIGHT, CHRIS WALLA, and CHRISTOPHER WILLITS & RYUICHI SAKAMOTO. NOTE: If you're thinking of buying one the new electronic/digital pianos, here's an excellent guide by Rob Beck. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Evlov Music - A Sonic Journey

After a long break from his last full-length release, Evlov (Robert Alexander) was gearing up for a massive LP release. Somehow this EP had to make its way before the bigger album! Full of nostalgia, textures, acoustics and sonic journeys, "Thank You For Listening" brings you on a journey that Evlov has been wanting to take you on for quite some time. You will appreciate the soothing sounds, bumpin' beats and melodic textures that will take you to another level of listening pleasure. Inspired by various artists like Tycho, Christopher Willits, Underworld, Charles Webster and Four Tet, you will be surprised to hear a different direction that Evlov has taken for this release. This sonic journey will most likely want you begging for more. This is just a taste of what will be released in the near future. 2021 was a massive year for change. May this release take you on a journey that serves you in ways that work best for you. Indeed, this is an album that reflects promise, motivation, strength and hope. After all, you so got this! And... with all that being said... literally... "Thank You for Listening!" credits released December 11, 2021 Evlov (Robert Alexander) - Programming, Producing, Mixing and Mastering on all tracks except: Welker Road - Live Impromptu Jamming with Guitar on "Between The Lines" (Track 5) Thank you so much to Welker Road for being one of the inspirations for this release. Also a special thank you to Tara Green for the motivation for inspiration for the commitment to record/produce every morning (for a long while). More special thank you's to Ginger Adam Little, Richard Slade, Kaisa Tokoi, Terri and George Kursar, Todd Williams, Freddie Grant, Don Estes, Allanah Hunt, Janessa Rose, Jake Alexander, KB (you know who you are), Cory Warfield, Lisa Ma, Brian Whitten and the many others who have believed in my craft. And... how can I not forget my amazing mother? I love you! And thank you everyone for being you. #27: Habakkuk - Trusting God in times of darkness

Animated

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2020 15:44

Habakkuk was a Hebrew prophet who wrote the Biblical book bearing his name most likely between 612 and 605 BC. His ministry was at a time in the history of the southern Kingdom of Judah when there was a shift in the balance of international powers. The Assyrians, who dominated the Holy Land in the eighth and seventh centuries BC, were defeated with the overthrow of their capital Nineveh by the Babylonians in 612 BC. The Babylonians then marched westward, defeating Egypt, and then moved southward, threatening the lands of Syria, Israel, and Edom. He foresaw that the Babylonians would attack and then eventually overrun his nation to take many of its citizens into exile. The prophet's bewilderment In the face of such an impending calamity resonates with peace-loving, God-fearing people of almost any time or place and can even relate to our own personal circumstances. Why is God silent as evil and the suffering that follows increases within a society? The book's message is that God will do what is just and right. Sooner or later, there will be a reckoning as God holds evil nations and individuals to account. God, who is mighty in power, is nevertheless merciful and attentive to a person's cry for answers. Believers live by faith that leads to embracing his ways even when things don't seem to make sense such as in times of darkness and tremendous turmoil. The prophet exemplifies this by moving from a frustrated lament to a song of worship despite what he knows is going to be impending disaster. Through faith in God, Habakkuk is ready to press on confidently in his life journey despite what is going to be a crushing circumstance. Meditate on that idea and be at peace, my friend. Additional Bible verses quoted in this episode: "For we live by faith, not by sight." 2 Corinthians 5:7 "But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved." Hebrews 10:38-39 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." #25: The art of staying on guard

Animated

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2020 31:07

What is the key to staying on guard against threats, both potential and existential, without becoming exhausted? Looking into this can be very helpful in the midst of our current set of circumstances as the tension is high in terms of the prevailing socio-political, socio-cultural climate on so many levels regardless of your particular affiliation or leanings.  Surely it isn’t wise to ignore what is going on by burying your head in the sand or going with the mind-your-own-business strategy of “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” to avoid being cancelled or shadow-banned by whomever. Fact is ignoring real threats does not eliminate them, but there’s also a danger associated with obsessing over potentialities to the point that things that don’t even exist morph into powerful entities following you around like some demon-piloted drone. Need some balance here and the sayings and perspectives from ancient wisdom literature like those contained in the Biblical manuscripts known as Proverbs offer wise counsel that is applicable today. "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." Proverbs 22:3 "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds." Proverbs 27:23 Connecting these thoughts in the effort to strike a balance in the midst of this challenging season, whereby awareness and vigilance are critical but can overwhelm you to the point of exhaustion if not handled properly, is key. Specifically, paying attention so as not to be caught off guard is one thing, but it’s quite another to stay glued to newsfeeds and get into social media squabbles that do nothing but corrode relationships and your own psyche. Instead take measures to intentionally set your mind and heart on things that are lasting sources of wisdom, joy, and blessing and use the accelerants of humility and generosity to spark those into a flame that can be fanned into a roaring fire warming everyone in your path. That fire not only creates warmth, but light. Warmth and brightness make the journey better, right?  "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." The lawless high seas hold many secrets, ones that were too tempting for New York Times best-selling author Ian Urbina and renowned ambient soundscape artist Christopher Willits to explore. Their journalistic approach to eco-activism and musical exploration is expressed through Ian's new book "Outlaw Ocean", which chronicles five years spent at sea among smuggling, drilling, and dumping pirates in international waters. Accompanying Ian's written work, Christopher produced an album called "The Unknown Sea", an EP written to accompany and expand upon the narrative of the book. Moderator Marcus Colombano explores this first-of-it's-kind dual masterpiece and fascinating collaboration between the creative and analytical brains of Ian and Christopher that live to tell a heartbreaking tale of our ocean's past, present and future.

Artist Statement"When I was 12, I realized that my life’s path was to make music in the service of love and healing. Music is a medicine that allows us to feel, listen, and ultimately surrender to the present moment. The compositions I create move through my imagination, heart, and hands, like guitar through a speaker and light through a lens. I am continuously learning and evolving with the process, a practice of letting go of all that I create, as it creates me.I believe that music and art can catalyze inner change, and those changes within ourselves can influence changes in the world. I design immersive sound experiences, intending to create a space for opening, reflection, and transformation. As a teacher, I show others how to do this for themselves and aid them in creating what they love. This is a new song off my long-awaited upcoming album. I have been deeply inspired by artists like Four Tet, Bonobo, Helios, Tycho, Christopher Willits, BT, Aphex Twin and many others who follow their hearts and intuition. These types of artists / producers think outside the box and create a unique sound that is not easy to 'pigeonhole' into a certain category or genre. There are many others who operate in this similar capacity and my heart goes out to you. If you are reading this and are one of these amazing music artists / producers, please know I am walking alongside you and proud to join you by your side. Wherever you are in the world, may this song not only be for Mel - may it be for all of you who are following your heart and intuition. You are doing an amazing thing! Keep up the great work and shine brightly - day or night!

Last summer, EAST FOREST was invited to Maui to record brand new teachings from the late spiritual teacher Ram Dass. The album is released in four “chapters” throughout 2019, culminating in a full-length release on August 9, 2019. Trevor Hall, Stic of Dead Prez, Laura Bird of The Mynabirds, and Grammy-nominated artist, Krishna Das make guest appearances on the 14-track album, with remixes including Hammock, Christopher Willits among others. East Forest has trail-blazed a path in the wellness movement-building bridges between the digital and natural worlds. His collaborations include Google and John Hopkins neuroaesthetics program, Consciousness Hacking, and Science And Nonduality (SAND), in addition to his weekly podcast series that offers discussions with thought leaders alongside musically guided original meditations. As a consistent pillar of his public offerings, East Forest offers face to face retreats for deeper immersive experiences both at the Esalen Institute where he is a faculty member as well as in his adopted home of the high desert in Southern Utah. His albums and collaborations have twice charted #1 (iTunes Aug 2016, and May 2019) as well as several Billboard top ten releases. 2019 also saw the release of a new long-form East Forest album, “Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner” (May 2019), a remarkable 5-hour fully connected album experience designed to act as a ‘digital shaman' to musically guide the psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychoactive mushrooms) experience in the rapidly progressing drug research studies occurring around the world. The album reached #1 on the iTunes charts after it's release (iTunes May, 2019). RIP Ram Dass.

The awesome folks over at Headphone Commute asked me to do a special mix for them and of course I could not refuse. The mix is special because it is helping promote a fantastic new compilation they have put together.  It's called "...and darkness came" and you can find out about it here... Headphone Commute ...and darkness came. The compilation features 80 tracks(yes, 80 tracks!) from great artists in ambient, modern classical and experimental music.  Artists like Max Richter, Clint Mansell, offthesky, Julien Neto, Ólafur Arnalds, Dakota Suite, Christopher Willits, Loscil, Lawrence English, Maps And Diagrams, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nils Frahm, Talvihorros, Bersarin Quartett, Antonymes, Simon Scott, Dustin O'Halloran, Machinefabriek, :papercutz, and many, many, more. 100% of the proceeds are donated to two charitable organizations, Doctors Without Borders and The Humane Society, to help all those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Please head over to Headphone Commute and think about picking up this excellent compilation. I have no idea why I called this mix "cloud mapping". It started off as something about the sky, then aerial views of something, then blah blah blah...then it ends up as "cloud mapping". Most of the music is new or new-ish.  There is no big time theme in this mix, just good, drifting ambient music.  I guess you could picture yourself flying over clouds while listening to this.  My favorite track in the mix is from Christopher Willits' release "Live on Earth Vol.1".  It's the track, "Stars and Plants (live) – Kyoto, Japan – June 19, 2008". Enjoy some good 'ole floaty ambient.
