Sarah Wentzel-Fischer is a farmer, a writer, a connector, an advocate. Officially, she wears several hats. She is the Executive Director of the Quivira Coalition, an organization focused on building soil, biodiversity, and resilience on western working landscapes. Sarah raises pigs and makes compost with her partner on Polk's Folly Farm in northern New Mexico. Farmers in New Mexico elected Sarah to represent them on the board of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union. We talk a little bit about what that means for Sarah's involvement in farm bill negotiations and other advocacy work related to that role in our conversation. But most of our conversation focused on the upcoming Regenerate Conference. Quivira organizes the annual event together with American Grassfed and Holistic Management International. This year, it's taking place November 1st to 3rd in Santa Fe. Western Landowners Alliance is a sponsor of the event and the online podcast will be there. Recording content and sharing stories in a planned podcaster's corner. Sarah and I talked about the theme of this year's event and some of the highlights, for both of us, on the agenda. In an unprecedented show of political power, hundreds of Black leaders from around California descended on the state Capitol today to publicize their legislative priorities. The coalition wants the state to do more to address systemic racism, in everything from law enforcement to housing policy. The rally was hosted by four different Black political organizationsfrom around the state, including the Bay Area, and they're calling for thelegislature to pass a package of bills, and this goes way beyond the reparationsproposal put forward by the state commission on making restitution todescendants of slaves and other 19th century Black Americans. For more on this, KCBS Radio's political reporter Doug Sovern, along with Bret Burkhart and Patti Resing spoke with Tim Kornegay, Coalition Director of LiveFree California. That's a networking organization for Black-led groups, and one of those who hosted today's event at the Capitol.

They sneer at regulations that protect the taxpayers from their ineptitude and faux-libertarian stance. They ultimately fail because our private finance sector is nothing but a deck of cards that ultimately falls. And then they beg for a bailout. That is what Silicon Valley Bank did. After a long, challenging year, November 3rd, 2020 is election day. But, how do we use our votes most effectively when we get to the polls? In the new Embodied Astrology guest episode, I’m talking with Shilpa Joshi, a community organizer and advocate working specifically around climate justice and policy, about her work in politics, how the current administration has affected environmental policy and why this election is so important on a whole range of issues, plus some forward looking into the rest of this year’s astrology and what’s coming up in 2021. My favorite quotes and takeaways from Shilpa: ! VOTING WILL NOT LEAD US TO LIBERATION! ! IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE, IT’S THE LEAST YOU CAN DO! ! YOUR VOTES FOR LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT (IF NOT MORE) THAN YOUR VOTE FOR PRESIDENT! ! EVEN IF YOU CAN’T VOTE OR CHOOSE NOT TO, YOU CAN STILL BE ACTIVE IN YOUR CIVIC PARTICIPATION! Beyond November 3, Shilpa hopes you help your community by doing two things: Join a mutual aid network or an organization that fights for local change (like local chapters of Sunrise Movement or Movement for Black Lives or Universal Healthcare for All, as examples), and Fill out the census (2020census.gov). The census allows for our cities, counties, and states to ask for money for schools, transit, affordable housing, healthcare (and more things) from the federal government. Black, brown, and Indigenous communities are *routinely* undercounted, meaning they don’t receive funding they need and deserve for basic services. The census does not ask about your immigration status or other sensitive information and it only takes two minutes. Shilpa Joshi (she/her) is the Coalition Director for Renew Oregon. For the last four years, she's organized a broad swath of progressive organizations, labor unions, and Tribes to advocate for comprehensive climate policy in Oregon. Before joining Renew, Shilpa led a statewide coalition to victory on a campaign to ban fracking in Maryland with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. She has worked on local and national environmental justice and climate issues as a youth organizer, field director, coalition manager, and lobbyist for 14 years. She also serves as the Board Chair for the National Queer Asian and Pacific Islander Alliance, the only federal queer Asian advocacy organization in the US. In Portland, she likes to make elaborate meals for friends and family, and organize mutual aid to help neighbors struggling with houselessness, wildfire smoke, Proud Boys, and the police. She earned her Bachelor's degree in International Environmental Policy from American University. There is a reason we have two ears and only one mouth. Listening is an incredibly important skill to develop and it will get you farther in your personal life and career than speaking too quickly ever will. John Esparza is the President & CEO of the Texas Trucking Association, but before that he worked for Governor Bush’s office in the 90s as the Coalition Director.   During this time, he got to see much of the great state of Texas, but it also gave him valuable experience hosting events.  While hosting these events, he learned about the importance of listening to local individuals at the venues where he was coordinating these events.   This practice of active listening was instrumental in a lot of John’s success later in his career, and he now advocates within the field of public policy.  His job is to ensure that the voice of the trucking industry is part of the vernacular that creates the laws and rules that govern Texas. He must listen to the people he represents to ensure that they have a seat at the legislative table and are engaged in the political process. In this episode of Lead to Grow, I spoke with John about the importance of listening, hearing out different opinions, and being an agent of change in the state of Texas.

Date: January 16, 2014 Featuring: Gilbert Salinas, MPA, Director of Patient and Community Relations, Rancho los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Kaiser Safety Net Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Thea James, MD, Emergency Medicine, Boston Medical Center; Director, Violence Intervention Advocacy Program Rachel A. Davis, Managing Director, Prevention Institute Kaile Shilling, Coalition Director, Violence Prevention Coalition (Los Angeles) We’ve just come through a holiday season that’s bitter sweet for some — including families that have lost a loved one because of gun violence. Some incidents garner headlines more than others, due to the sheer magnitude of what’s transpired, the ages of the victims, the incredible shock to an otherwise quiet day in a quiet neighborhood, and the tragic consequences. For those in the trenches of working to reduce gun violence day to day — more often in communities and in health care systems all too familiar with gun-related deaths and injuries — every event stands out and has a story behind it.How can health care organizations, the very ones that often receive the victims through the doors of their EDs, be more effective partners and leaders further upstream? How can gun violence prevention become part of emerging strategies to encompass and focus on better population health? The January 16, 2014, WIHI: Violence Prevention and Community Health is going to highlight some exemplar thinking and initiatives now gaining traction, that everyone can learn from. Rachel Davis and Kaile Shilling each have their finger on the pulse of multiple efforts and coalitions that are right now taking a comprehensive preventive, public, and population health approach to reducing violence of all sorts. Dr. Thea James is responsible for close to a decade’s worth of pioneering work at Boston Medical Center that’s spread nationally, to help youth adopt better responses to high-risk situations, and to help medical staff deliver “trauma-informed care.” Gilbert Salinas, currently a Kaiser Permanente Safety Net Fellow at IHI, has garnered national attention for his work in Los Angeles, and with former Surgeon General David Satcher on a seminal 2001 “Report on Youth Violence.” Gilbert will also discuss a hospital-based intervention program he’s helped nurture, known as “Caught in the Crossfire.”WIHI host Madge Kaplan talks with panelists, who offer a lot of great, actionable ideas for preventing and reducing gun violence.
