February 28: This week marks a quirky moment in pop culture (and soft drink) history. Michael Jackson's hair caught fire back in 1984 while shooting an ad for Pepsi, which was, to put it mildly, a production challenge. This week, we discuss the battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi, focusing mainly on the Pepsi Challenge, New Coke, and the other marketing efforts that defined the soda industry. You'll also learn a bit about Royal Crown Cola...because why not?
In 1975, Pepsi announced the “Pepsi Challenge.” The marketing idea involved a simple blind taste test to determine the best soda in the country. In this episode, Kevin Mahoney, CFP®, who specializes in financial planning for Millennials, explains why we wish our financial decisions could work like the Pepsi Challenge. No context. No peer influence or status implications. Only one variable, like sweetness, to consider. But the Pepsi Challenge revealed the importance of keeping in mind the context. In personal finance (as with soda preferences), context matters. Status pressure is real. And our financial lives are full of different variables. With money, we need more than calculations that, in theory, might maximize our wealth. We also need to understand the circumstances in which we're making these decisions. Welcome to Financially Well, the finance podcast for Millennials.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

TCW Podcast Episode 178 - The Intellivision Part 2 In part two we look at how Mattel starts aggressively marketing the Intellivision by directly attacking Atari in its advertisements. New leadership by Josh Denham helped to foster this and to rework the production of the Intellivision to make it for cheaper. This lower cost model was released as the Intellivision II. Still some in the company were still wanting to do a computer, but it proved to be too complicated and expensive to bring to market. They settled on releasing a lesser computer attachment that allowed for some peripherals. Ultimately through a combination of their own problems, and the looming home console crash Mattel nearly went out of business, and spun off Intellivision where it continued to limp along in the shadows all the way to the early 90's. 1983 Pepsi Challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghMYzo0rgrw 1981 Pepsi Challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FhxujFUJlQ Grey Poupon Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvDazrJuSdA Most Interesting Man in the World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guMrgRKKENI Intellivision VS Atari: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCgG7Y-XqEw George Plimpton For Intellivision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYLly625cXE PBA Bowling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-X8MFOGuRo TCW 027 - The Magnavox Patent Lawsuit: http://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-magnavox-patent-lawsuits-friday-september-16-2016-1003-am/ Triple Action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li_LM6t6smo Blockcade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v-0CwiabZA Snafu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCmEcc4c1tk Space Armada: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEL0Ufhnb4w Astrosmash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osSe8nzu1m0 Atari VS Other Companies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqTxWZerumo Space Games Commercial Intellivision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O17bGSd9SU Intellivision Master Component and Keyboard Component: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdveJuwHuGM ECS and Music Keyboard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5NMV-nEh6Q New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month! On todays episode Matt and Sheridan sit down to chat a little bit about everything. Starting with the Coke/Pepsi challenge and then coming in hot on the OF topic that we left off on last episode. Fast forward to us moving into opinions and how they're actually quite wonderful as long as everyone is willing to listen and be heard equally. Followed by some parenting chats, some life chats and a whole lot in between. At this point it's getting kind of hard to specify what exactly is talked about because we kind of feel like we talk about it all. But isn't that the joys of a totally unscripted podcast?

In April 1985, the Coca-Cola Company decided to discontinue its most popular soft drink and replace it with a sweeter formula it would market as “New Coke.” As soon as the decision was announced, a large percentage of the US population boycotted the drink and made sales plummet for the company. Outrage over pulling the original coke recipe was high, and after only 79 days of introducing New Coke, the product was pulled from shelves and the original Coke returned. So what went wrong? More info and links to resources on https://redtogreen.solutions/ For sponsorships, collaborations, volunteering, or feedback write Marina at change@redtogreen.solutions Please leave a review on iTunes https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/red-to-green-food-sustainability/id1511303510 Connect with Marina Schmidt https://www.linkedin.com/in/schmidt-marina/ As the Pepsi Challenge had highlighted millions of times [over], Coke could always be defeated when it came down to taste. So in what must have been seen as a logical step, Coca-Cola developed a new formula and conducted 200,000 taste tests to see how it fared. The results were overwhelming. Not only did it taste better than the original, but people also preferred it to Pepsi-Cola. Coca-Cola decided it was time to make a drastic decision that, to this day, is considered extraordinary in the history of brand marketing. They changed the recipe for the first time in 100 years and created “New Coke,” the sweeter alternative favored in the blind taste tests. They pulled all traditional Coca-Cola from store shelves and replaced them with the new formula, leaving consumers with no option but to drink New Coke instead of the Coke they had known before. The company expected sales to rise, and they initially did. But the outrage and drop in sales that followed were unprecedented and unexpected.
In honor of the most popular white wine in the US and the biggest wine retailer in the US, we undertake our very own Costco Kirkland Signature Brand Chardonnay Challenge! If you remember the Pepsi Challenge, this is a similar concept. We line up two Chardonnays that Costco sells under its Kirkland Brand and compare them to each other and a third well known Chardonnay that Costco also sells. We give you our honest opinions about these wines and help you pick the right one whether you are a Chardonnay fan or not. Spoiler alert, one of these wines was not good at all, and you may be surprised at which! We also discuss why Chardonnay is so popular in the US (is it supply or demand?!?) and the differences between oaks and unoaked or naked Chardonnay. Come join us - this ride is pretty fun and sometimes a little silly! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2020 Kirkland Signature Sonoma Chardonnay, 2020 Kirkland Signature K Vine Chardonnay Evergreen Vineyard, and 2020 Kendall Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay.
Advertising is a powerful tool to get people to consume your goods. How much of why we buy things is because of taste, and how much of it is just how it was marketed. In the spirit of this let's take the Pepsi challenge. So we'll do a non-alcoholic blind taste test. So, join us as we caffeinate and have a drink.

Plus, they question the validity of the She-Hulk: Attorney At Law trailer's ridiculous CG; while fronting a curiousity about who might take up the mantle of leader for the Avengers. Trigger Warning - Phil and Phil would like to apologise wholeheartedly and unreservedly for the poor accent choices they made during the recording of this episode of the CB Wallop Podcast. Australian is NOT a reasonable replacement for Filipino. Otherwise this episode's fine mate, nothing to worry about - just a bit of mayhem on the streets of Manilla - some people do get slightly killed, but it all turns out fine in the end. Welcome to the Marketing Rescue Podcast, the weekly show where we unpack epic marketing failures to brand rescues and comebacks. In this episode, Nico Coetzee and Chad Childress, co-founders of KPI Agency, are discussing “the worst marketing disaster in history” – New Coke. Did you know Coca-Cola is 131 years old? Today, consumers enjoy 19,400 Coke products every second. Coke made a series of excellent decisions after one terrible one. Even the biggest and best companies in the world can get it wrong from time to time. In 1975, Pepsi launched the Pepsi Challenge. Through the campaign, it showed that people preferred Pepsi over Coca-Cola. Pepsi started to gain market share, and Coke started to slip. In desperate times, the company decided to ditch its original recipe and release New Coke. The market research team conducted a massive project and found that subjects liked New Coke over the original recipe and Pepsi. However, the taste tests were done with just a few ounces of soda, rather than a standard serving size. Plus, the company did not take into account the personal connection people have with their brand. April 23, 1985, New Coke launches. It's a day that will live in marketing infamy. Their confidence was super high, despite departing from what made them the most iconic brand in the beverage industry. Their stock went up, and 80% of the American public was aware of the change within a couple of days. Over the next 79 days, Coke received over 40,000 calls, letters, and loads of complaints from their bottlers. Seventy-nine days later, Coke realized the only right thing to do was bring Coca-Cola back. What was Pepsi doing this whole time? They ran several campaigns mocking Coke. Pepsi benefited in the short-term; they saw a 14% sales jump. However, in the long-run, the Coca-Cola market share outgrew Pepsi. Pepsi won the battle but lost the war. Even though Coke didn't realize it at the time, they are a lifestyle brand. At the end of the day, emotions beat logic. The only way to defeat another lifestyle is to provide a more attractive lifestyle by helping people build a personal identity. The market research went wrong because they never took into account the emotional connection people had with the brand. Overall, Coke learned to fail forward. There's this stupid old joke about two certain things in life: death and taxes. But The Worst Adults would posit that there is a third: discourse. People love to argue. Problem is, Adam and Matthew are not very good at arguing. So they're really reaching this week as they try to discover the secrets to winning an argument. Along the way, they pick fights with children, try not to start any fires, break down strange happenings at the Super Bowl, use time travel to prevent alien invasions, wear chicken costumes, and spend far too much time explaining how to position your toilet paper!
