In this episode, we trudge through Operation Dumbo Drop, a 1995 film that somehow makes the chaos of airlifting an elephant into a war zone unbearably dull. We spotlight Tai, the real-life elephant who gave a far more compelling performance than most of the human cast. While the movie struggles to decide if it's a comedy, a war film, or a Disney fever dream, we break down exactly where it goes wrong. Plus, we dig into some behind-the-scenes movie magic and ask the ultimate question: how do you make an elephant movie this boring? The Hoofin' it in Hollywood podcast has been produced by Paul, Audrey, Melissa, and Jordan. Following up from last week's episode, this week we talk about what it's like to actually visit an elephant sanctuary and roam among these big fat mammals. What's that? Stop fat-shaming the elephants? It's because they're big-boned? Yea, alright.. good one. Pretty much expecting a one-species zoo, we spent half a day at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, known for being one of the most ethical elephant sanctuaries in the world. But would it be ethical? Would it even be fun? And would it be worth the bother at all? Also featured in this week's episode are our newly formed, shite-talk packed segments (entirely unrelated to elephants), “The Dumbest Among Us” and “Yoo-Hoo, What Should I Do-Hoo?”So that's what to expect. Listen in if you also like to have a mediocre laugh and judge elephants from afar. Liked this episode or have a suggestion for something we should bother doing? We'd love your review! Dr. William Schaffner is the Professor of Preventive Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. As a spokesperson for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, he is an often-tapped resource for infectious disease education and is passionate about health, vaccines, and disease prevention. When not teaching or doing clinical trials he volunteers at The Elephant Sanctuary outside of Nashville. In this Squeeze the Day, we learn about his drive for health, and educating others as well as what he learns from his students and from life.
We've all seen it. Someone putting up that mandatory selfie with an elephant after their “once in a lifetime trip” around South East Asia. Maybe you thought to yourself, “That's as basic as it gets”, or “Thread lightly around that trunk fu**face, you might get squished”. But you probably also wondered… What's it like to stand so close to the biggest mammal on the planet? This week, lucky to be in Thailand, we wanted to tick this activity off our “Basic Bitch Travel Checklist” and visit an Elephant Sanctuary. But this one (Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai) is a little different. It prides itself on being one of the most ethical around. That means no riding, no touching, no feeding, no washing. Just looking. Isn't that basically what a zoo is? In this episode, expect to hear all about our research and general sh*te talk about elephant sanctuaries. Essentially covering, why would anyone bother with them. You'll also hear our game of the week - “Uptown Trunk”. Tune in next week to hear if you actually should bother with them or not based on our experience and world renowned ranking system, the Should I Bother Beans. Scott Blais–co-founder of the Global Sanctuary for Elephants, whose initial facility is the Elephant Sanctuary Brazil (ESB); he also co-founded The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee—starts by attempting to field my curveball opening question: what makes elephants special? Drawing on 35 years of caring for elephants, he responds chiefly observing how quickly these animals—typically traumatized from […] The post Scott Blais, co-founder of Global Sanctuary for Elephants first appeared on Talking Animals.
Notes: Kate wrote "Can I Stand Here For You" after watching an Oprah show about two injured women Iraq veterans. Juanita Wilson (who had lost her hand) saw Tammy Duckworth come in (she had lost one hand and both feet). Juanita had committed herself to “standing for” any injured female veteran. She asked Tammy "Can I stand here for you?" Then she washed Tammy's hair which still contained dust from Iraq. She used her one hand and asked an orderly to help her with his two hands. Tammy was comatose, in terrible pain and Juanita stood beside her bed for 5 days. Now Tammy is a tri-athlete and was Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs for President Barack Obama, the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 8th congressional district. And was then elected to the Senate from the State of Illinois. Knowing the backstory behind some songs makes the songs even richer. As I'm thinking about how we can work toward easing loneliness, this example of two women connecting, then Kate allowing herself to be touched by the story, gives an example... and gives me a way to remember how to make the offering of standing by someone. Don't miss the chance to sing with Melanie DeMore once you've learned the song -- she sings lower, which may give you a chance to experiment with the high harmony if you found it too high in this podcast -- or maybe the melody will feel super comfortable in Melanie's range? Keep finding what feels good in your voice! Songwriter Info: From Inverness CA, Kate Munger has devoted herself for over 40 years to creating non-hierarchical, collaborative models for spirited group singing, joyful community building, and deep fellowship through rounds and parts singing. Kate has written hundreds of singable, swinging, deep songs that remind us of our best inclinations and intentions, and are sung accompaniment to and medicine for our lives. She has loved returning home to Inverness after 9 singing trips to Bali, 6 to Thailand (and the Elephant Sanctuary where singing to and with Elephants was the highlight), and one each to Russia and Spain in the past three decades. Just as the Pandemic arrived, Kate returned from a month in New Zealand with 13 singers where they offered their sung prayers to the community of Christchurch as they remembered the devastating earthquake of 2011 and healed from the horrific shooting at the Muslim Mosque in March 2019. She deeply believes that singers are the best ambassadors of peace on our planet; we show our neighbors our best selves when we travel in their land and appreciate their people, their culture, and their tragedies and show that appreciation through our singing. In 2000 she founded the first of now 220 Threshold Choirs worldwide for choral singers who are called to sing at the bedsides of people who are dying, in a coma, newborns, children in hospital, and with folks who are grieving and who are incarcerated. In honoring its innovative mission, the Threshold Choir has re-imagined what true service can look like; healing the giver as it offers comfort, presence, and ease for the receiver. Now retired from running the business of the Threshold Choir, Kate lives, swims, works, and sings along the shores of Tomales Bay, for 16 years at the Lama Foundation in New Mexico and wherever she can. Sharing Info: Please sing this with loved ones freely -- when sharing in a money-making venture, like a workshop, class, or performance, please contact Kate for permission and rates. March 3 is World Wildlife Day. We celebrate the occasion by exploring a haven for a majestic yet at-risk marvel of nature. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is the nation's largest natural-habitat refuge developed specifically for African and Asian elephants. The Sanctuary operates on 3,060 acres in Hohenwald, TN – 85 miles southwest of Nashville.
From working at a safari park as a teenager to needing a change from the routine work in the veterinary field, Scott and Kat's careers in captive elephant welfare couldn't have started much differently. Find out how the dark side of elephant care opened Scott Blais's eyes to their immense suffering and how the violent death of Tyke, a circus elephant, led to him co-founding his first sanctuary, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (TES). Learn how Kat Blais left New York to work with elephants as an intern at TES and never looked back. Transcript of this episode is available here. Who we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. There are elephants around the world in need of sanctuary, but too few places exist to be able to care for even a fraction of the elephants. International support is necessary to build sanctuaries for elephants in need of rescue and rehabilitation. Our pilot project is Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, currently home to six female Asian elephants. Today's guest is Kyle Lybarger, a forester and conservationist from north Alabama. His passion is identifying, protecting, and managing the overlooked grassland ecosystems in his region and educating the public about the environmental value and climate benefits of these native plants. Click here for the show notes:In today's episode, we'll be talking to Sofie and Tony who founded and run an elephant sanctuary, in fact, the first-ever Elephant Sanctuary in Europe. Seb and I met Tony and Sofie way back in 2018 when we went to visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France. We had been in contact with Tony asking if our group might visit the sanctuary for our Dordogne trip in 2020 and if we might visit during a scout. They kindly agreed to show us around one beautiful spring day and what a lovely day it was. Now, I should add, that at this time, there were no elephants at the sanctuary yet. They spent a couple of hours showing us what they had built so far, their story, and their goal to try to be a place where elephants will live the rest of their lives in a much better situation than they were before. As usual, Seb and I were in absolute awe of the work these people are doing. Of course that Dordogne trip in 2020 did not go ahead, but we have actually rebooted that trip and you could be visiting this sanctuary, a sanctuary that is not open to the public on our trip on our A Taste Of The French Countryside: Romantic Villages & Valleys with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau that is happening in September 2023! This trip still has a few spots available and you can join us and visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France and meet Gandhi and Delhi! In this episode, we discussHow Sofie and Tony got involved in animal protectionWhy there is a need for an elephant sanctuary in Europe Why they decided to create this space for elephantsWhat their long-term goals are for this sanctuary

The reason the world is in such a state when it comes to the environment is simple - we have become disconnected from the source of life – the planet which sustains us. Since 1970, two-thirds of global populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish have been lost on average, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Environmental destruction - caused by deforestation, unsustainable agriculture and the illegal wildlife trade - is a leading factor in the decline. These numbers can be overwhelming and make us think, what can I do? Well, how we spend our money matters, and my friend Vicki Kiely encourages us all to reconsider visiting zoos and aquariums, because she believes it is inhumane to treat animals this way. An activist for many years, I have such great admiration for the work Vicki does and encourage everyone to really think about this and then act. If you care about nature, speak up and if you have the courage that Vicki does, get involved where it makes sense to you.Thank you so much Vicki for being a voice for the voiceless. A crazed trucker hell bent on revenge? Jeremy Piven in a precursor to Ari Gold? Bill Murray and an elephant? SURE! Larger Than Life (1996) is a comedy road film finding Jack Corcoran (Bill Murray) traveling cross country with his newly inherited elephant. Vera, the elephant, was the show partner to Jack's father - a traveling clown he never knew. Now Jack must travel to California and decide what to do with Vera. Along the way he meets a wacky cast of characters including a paranoid trucker, Tip Tucker. McConaughey's performance (and really this entire film) has to be seen to be believed. Following our film discussion, we sit down with Todd Montgomery - Operations and Outreach Manager at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. The Elephant Sanctuary provides a home for captive elephants and gives them the opportunity to live out their lives in a safe haven dedicated to their well-being. In this episode, I was delighted to talk with Todd Montgomery, head of operations and outreach coordinator at The Elephant Sanctuary located in Hohenwald, Tennessee. Taking a stance on what is right vs wrong is defining and The Elephant Sanctuary has portrayed what it means to do good on this earth since 1995. Elephants are held captive for terrible reasons and this is where The Sanctuary comes into play, providing amazing animals with a home to flourish in. A total of 27 elephants call The Elephant Sanctuary their home with more than 2700 acres to explore. Make sure you check out their website, www.Elephants.com, and on Instagram @Theelephantsanctuary to learn more about one of the greatest places on this planet! Peabody and Emmy Award winner Jay Martel joins us in Booth One via Skype all the way from Hollywood! It's our first long-distance interview show and the technology involved has Gary and Roscoe a bit daunted, so we've brought in our audio guru John Lisiecki to run sound for us today. Great to have John back in the studio! Jay won an Emmy this year as Executive Producer on the brilliant sketch comedy show Key & Peele, now available in full episodes at Comedy Central. One of their recurring sketches became so iconic that Luther, Barack Obama's "Anger Translator" appeared with the president at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Jay and producing partner Ian Roberts, a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, were the show runners (Jay tells us what that entails) for Key & Peele and are now show runners for the TV Land program Teachers - featuring the actresses who performed here in Chicago as the improv group, The Katydids. Jay is also a successful playwright, essayist (The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, etc.) and novelist. His first novel, Channel Blue, is about an intergalactic alien conglomerate called Galaxy Entertainment that for decades has used the Earth as the basis of a reality TV show for billions of planetary viewers. But the viewership has become bored with our "earthle" behavior and the producing corporation of Channel Blue decides to "cancel" Earth in a spectacular series-ending finale. Only one person can prevent this disaster - out-of-work screenwriter and manic depressive Perry Bunt. And this is just the first 40 pages!! A terrific read and a very funny book. We detour into a few animal stories and talk about Shirley and Jenny, 2 former circus elephants who have an emotional reunion after 22 years when they end up at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Watch the touching video here. Next we discuss the 100-year-old giant tortoise Diego, who single-handedly saved his species from extinction by fathering 800 babies in the past 50 years on the Galapagos Island of Espanola. Conservationists credit Diego's success with the ladies to his handsome, grizzled appearance. You be the judge. Finally, an air passenger boarded a flight recently with her "emotional support animal" - a duck wearing red shoes and a Captain America diaper. Gary, Roscoe and Jay discuss the merits and ethical implications of the emotional support animal craze - real or ruse? Gary and Roscoe are treated to Booth One experiences by being invited into the limousines of Tony and Tina on the way to their "wedding". Roscoe gets the bridal party while Gary travels with the groomsmen as they head to the church on time. Afterwards, we attend the ceremony and reception right here in Chicago. It's a delightful affair, full of humor and outrageous behavior. Do yourself a favor and book your table today for Tony n' Tina's Wedding! It's not every day that you hear a great Richard Nixon story, but Jay's got one and it involves rhododendrons and the King of Morocco. And he relates a remarkable anecdote about confronting Jeb Bush about the Florida death penalty while working as an on-air correspondent for Michael Moore's TV Nation. Kiss of Death: Phil Chess - Chess Records Boss who spread the Blues A Polish Jewish immigrant who grew up in Chicago, Phil Chess introduced the world to African-American blues, R&B, and Rock 'n Roll. With his brother Leonard, they founded Chess Records and throughout the 1950's and early '60's, released a string of hits, including Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Etta James' "At Last," and Bo Didley's "Who Do You Love." Their second release was Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone." Twelve years later in London, Mick Jagger and his friends would name their new band after that record. "The story of the blues is to tell your feelings," he said. "The blues is what comes from the heart." Phil Chess was 95. Read NYT obit here.
