Jeff Thompson talks with a fascinating guest in this, yet another feature interview on Blind Abilities. Joey Stuckey is many things, not the least of which is a talented musician, a sound engineer and owner of Shadow Sound Studio in Macon, Georgia. He is also an insightful, thoughtful and articulate guest who has so many interesting things to share.  Joey talks about everything from his blindness, which stemmed from a brain tumor in early childhood; his entry into the world of music and sound production and how he embraced it as a “calling" as a blind youth; and his advice to young folks, blind and sighted who are thinking of getting into the music business. He takes us through his studio, a high-tech and vibrant business in Macon, his experiences while touring with his bands out on the road, and numerous opinions about all things that you, as a Blind Abilities listener will enjoy. Pete Lane had the opportunity to work on Jeff’s interview with Joey, and said of the experience” “This was an absolute pleasure! Joey is articulate and funny and I wanted to listen more than anything. As usual, Jeff conducts a fabulous interview, identifying with many of the bands, albums, principles and recording concepts that Joey delved into. This podcast  offers something for everyone, ranging from in depth and thoughtful ideas about blindness, independence and the tools we use in our day to day lies, to “geeky” discussions about microphones, recording software and hardware.  Jeff also follows Joey on a walk down memory lane as he describes his band’s recording  session at the famous Sun Studio in Memphis, where so many iconic musicians, like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many more, spent time recording the soundtracks of our lives. Pete said he had a blast adding so much of Joey’s music into this podcast, so put on some good headphones or find a good speaker to listen to! Be sure to join Jeff and his special guest, Joey Stuckey for this 90 minute interview, it’s well worth the time!” Below are the sections of this podcast and their respective time slots that will allow you to focus on particular topics, if you don’t want to sit down for the whole 90 minutes. Analysis Paralysis: A Moment of Time Between a Member of the BVI Community and a Sighted Individual

Blind Abilities

If you follow social media, you may have noticed some initiatives to enlighten our fellow society members on how to interact with people who happen to be Blind/Visually Impaired.  There was the “Just Ask, Don't Grab” campaign by Dr. Amy Kavanagh and other people from the Blind and Visually Impaired community addressing incidents where sighted members of our society feel obligated to save the day for the presumably helpless blind person. If you are out and about in the public sphere, chances are you've also encountered those people who take it upon themselves to determine what is best for you and have no idea how to assist and land up grabbing, insisting, demanding and upsetting you when they're actually trying to help. Unsolicited help can be frustrating, distracting or even dangerous  especially when focus on the environment is needed - crossing streets, navigating train platforms, ascending and descending stairs, to cite just a few examples.  Yes, sometimes those interactions can be useful, answering a question or confirming what we already know. And sometimes they can be an educational experience where we can teach society how best to engage with us in a manner that works for us. But sometimes the opposite can happen.  How do we negotiate these moments?  Lois Strachan, Author of “A Different Way of Seeing” and host of the podcast “A Different Way of Travelling”, and Jeff Thompson, Audio Producer and Host of the Blind Abilities podcasts, take on the tough questions surrounding the interaction between the sighted and Blind individuals. A question we want you to answer is, “What 3 Golden Rules would you like for the sighted world to know when interacting with a person from the BVI community?" In this Analysis Paralysis episode, we take a look at the entire picture and want to hear from you and your thoughts. Send us an email and let your voice join the conversation. Daniel Bernstrom has just released his 3rd book, Big Papa and the Time Machine. Big Papa and the Time Machine recalls a past that Daniel could only imagine but the realities, facts and some fiction put it all together in this wonderful book. From his African American heritage, to remembering his Papa’s story telling, Daniel captures the moments in this fictional depiction through the eyes of a 5 year old grandchild and his Big Papa.  Daniel relates how the Picture books convey some of the similarities of his vision loss and the depiction of the story illustrated by the artists drawing the pictures. How vision loss can blur the images and how memory can be a bit fuzzy in the mind. So too can what Daniel sees and doesn’t see. From managing the Career Connect program at American Foundation for the Blind, AFB, to Director of the  Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services. Joe also worked on transition and employment initiatives at the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and the Florida Department for the Blind.  With all that going on, Joe never lost touch for his love of movies. From working with actors, writers, and keeping on being involved, people started to call on Joe for his Blindness consulting. This led up to him leaving his day job and join the team creating, “See”, the latest Apple TV Plus series just released November 1st. Joe talks about the commitment Apple has made to hiring people with disabilities and Joe says that they want good actors and not to just hire Blind or Visually Impaired actors just because, and the BVI actors they did hire beat out the sighted actors trying out. From training Blindness skills to thousands of individuals , Joe takes that experience with him and works with visually impaired actors for accommodations, as well as sighted actors to focus on their other senses on the set of See. Harry Cooper talks about the process and experience behind developing an audio game being designed with the Blind in mind. Harry, Jacob and Conner make up Purple Jam Limited which is creating a game called Pitch Black. And here is a segment taken from their Kick Starter page, about Purple Jam and their Pitch Black project. Purple Jam consists of three audio specialists turned game developers, upon reassessing our omnidirectional lives, we decided to gather our intellectual resources and create the game of all games; Pitch Black: A Dusklight Story. We first graced each other in September of last year, powering through Master's degrees at The University of Derby. Harry Cooper, commonly known as ‘The Mastermind’ in a flash of inspiration, had the idea of creating a binaural based audio game. Naturally, Connor and Jordan were instantly on board. Using our past experience in sound design, composition, game development and narrative construction, we combined forces to create the company that we are today. With an unprecedented desire to excel in creative industries, we set upon our journey to create a diverse, deep and exciting journey through our dark and eccentric world.
