Former US Attorney Andy Luger says there is a new pattern of violent extremism that anyone with kids needs to hear. After months of mass and school shootings and targeted murders in Minnesota and our country, many of us are asking two related questions: Why is this happening now, and what can we do about it? The number and pace of these murders seems to be increasing, and we need to know what has changed in the last few years. Many mass murders, school shootings and targeted assassinations are committed by violent extremists, people who believe in violent means to achieve an ideological end. Whether they are white supremacists or al-Qaida style terrorists, they employ violence to further a societal goal.As horrific as these violent ideologues are, there is something more concerning gathering steam in the extremist world that has law enforcement and private analysts deeply concerned — loosely based nonideological online subcultures that glorify mass murder and self-harm for its own sake, not for some larger goal. As civic, community and political leaders look for solutions to the current wave of violence, this new development requires close scrutiny and creative solutions.I first learned about the radicalization of violent extremists in 2014. As U.S. attorney, I learned from experts how ISIS recruited young men in Minneapolis to become terrorists. I then learned about how domestic extremist groups used similar recruitment techniques to persuade the disillusioned to hate Jews, African Americans, Muslims and others.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

NO VIDEO PODCAST TODAY! Tim and Mary take on the news cycle with an update on the November 4 elections. With the NYC mayoral behind us, many are saying the way of life in America is truly behind us as well. Aftermarket comments on social indicate people really didn't do any research on Mayor-elect Mamdani's beliefs, a trojan horse of Communism and Islam which will surely affect us all eventually. It's shocking to read today's comments from the average American, actually, wondering what all the fuss is about. Are constituents really that easily led? Even in the 'flyover' states, we will find that with Islam's encroachment into Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan, the dominoes will fall eventually. We talk about what it all means at least for now, for America, Israel, and all those who love freedom. We also talk about freedom to be believers and Jews in today's climate. Believers who have long watched prophecy never thought we would see the things we are seeing, but we are here for a reason - walk circumspectly, and occupy till He comes. He is ever on the throne.
If you live in Minnesota, you know there are two things that keep you going through the long winters: a good pair of boots, and a great cup of coffee. For years, that coffee often came from Caribou, where Jim's guest this week, Erin Newkirk, most recently served as Chief Brand & Marketing Officer, helping guide a beloved global coffeehouse with more than 850 locations across 11 countries. Erin left Caribou coffee shortly after we recorded this show to start her own training & coaching company.Erin's story stretches far beyond coffee. Her career spans Fortune 500s, startups, coaching, and everything in between, always with the same ambition: to build brands, businesses, and breakthroughs that spark movements people can feel. She began her career at the test-prep company Kaplan, earned her MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, and honed her brand chops at General Mills, shaping icons like Cheerios and Pillsbury. Then she leapt into entrepreneurship, founding Red Stamp, a mobile-first lifestyle brand that reimagined personal connection and scaled to millions before it was acquired. Today, Erin brings that same energy to her work as an advisor and board member. partnering with founders, executives, and mission-driven ventures including ModernWell, Omnia Fishing, and TurnSignl, an award-winning service providing 24/7 real-time legal assistance.Recorded in person at the Best Buy Studios in Minneapolis, here is Jim's conversation with the leader who believes in grounding herself each day—and helping others grow along the way.---This week's episode is brought to you by Best Buy Ads.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

State Rep. Kaohly Her made history early this morning by becoming the first Hmong American and first woman elected to lead the city of St. Paul. Her defeated incumbent mayor Melvin Carter after a second round of tabulation of ranked choice ballots. Her campaigned on revitalizing the downtown and Midway neighborhoods, and working to make the city more business-friendly and responsive. There was no winner declared in the race for Minneapolis mayor Wednesday morning. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, no candidate reached the threshold needed to be declared the winner after first choice ballots were tallied. Incumbent Jacob Frey received nearly 42 percent of first choice votes. That's about 10 percentage points ahead of his closest opponent state Sen. Omar Fateh. Tabulation resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday.Minnesota Democrats will maintain a narrow edge in the state Senate after the DFLer won a suburban special election and Republicans won a seat in Wright County. And a longtime St. Cloud nonprofit leader has won a special election for Stearns County commissioner. Voters in Duluth approved a ballot initiative that allows tenants to pay for minor repairs and then deduct the cost from their next month's rent. The initiative passed overwhelmingly with about 69 percent of people voting in favor of it. The measure is the first of its kind in Minnesota.Primary care nurse practitioners, doctors and physician assistants at Allina Health are on a one-day strike Wednesday. A St. Paul-based home health care company is shutting down and laying off about 400 employees. Dependable Home Healthcare has notified the state its client care services will end in January. Staff and clients were notified Tuesday. The company employs hundreds of personal care assistants and support staff who work with people with disabilities.Hormel Foods Corporation is reducing its workforce. The Austin-based company is cutting around 250 jobs as part of a restructuring. The reductions will come through layoffs, reducing open positions and buyouts.
Today we're welcoming Stephanie Hansen, a four-time Emmy Award-winning television host, longtime radio personality, and author of "The True North Cabin Cookbook" volumes one and two. But what makes Stephanie's story particularly compelling for our cabin community is her raw honesty about what cabin ownership really means—including the moment she admits that the family's island cabin in Ely, Minnesota is what kept her in her marriage during the hardest years. "I would always think in the depths of the marriage not being awesome, two things. One was I still really like this man. And the second thing was... I don't know if I can ever not have my cabin."This isn't a polished story about picture-perfect family weekends. Stephanie talks candidly about the tension between being "cabin people" and "non-cabin people," the sacrifices required when you commit to cabin life (like her daughter never being able to play summer sports), and how the cabin became the place where three generations learned to coexist—from her 92-year-old mother-in-law to their daughter who grew up to become a serious canoer and Arctic expedition guide. What started as a cocktail waitress meeting her new boss evolved into a 32-year marriage anchored by this historic family place. The conversation takes an unexpected turn into food and storytelling when Stephanie shares how she turned family recipes into two published cookbooks—not fancy chef recipes, but the kind of food that makes people say "this is what cabin tastes like." We talk about legendary potato salads, why she's "almost embarrassed" by how simple some recipes are, and how reading cookbooks in bed at night is her version of literature. She also reveals the essential cabin kitchen items every host should have (spoiler: you need a big wooden salad bowl and cast iron you're not afraid to let guests use). Beyond the recipes and nostalgia, Stephanie offers sharp observations about the changing dynamics of cabin culture—the tension between long-time cabin owners and short-term renters, the economic reality that cabin ownership usually requires money, and her plea for democratizing access to nature. She champions the idea that "cabin can be a tent, cabin can be a car" and encourages people to find their own version of getting outside, even if it's not the million-dollar lakefront property. Whether you're someone who grew up at a family cabin and feels that bone-deep connection, you're trying to figure out if cabin life is right for you, or you simply want to understand why food and place are so deeply intertwined in cabin culture, this conversation offers both the romance and the reality of what it means to truly be cabin people.Instagram: @stephaniesdish @tastebudswithstephanie @dishingwithstephaniesdish @weeklydishmnYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@stephaniesdishWhere to Order her Cookbook: https://www.stephaniesdish.com/cookbooks/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAacbwXwauAaf4uYWXso8PAwKMya-_L-LLjGziS_I_CIlOvZ8aGFlCi2ENhl17A_aem_KB0i4K-bs_tby2pEjnDpQwInstagram: @cozyrockcabin Cozy Rock Cabin: https://staycozycabin.holidayfuture.com/listings/311027Cozy Camp Sebec: https://staycozycabin.holidayfuture.com/listings/311051 Cozy Rock Website: http://www.staycozycabin.com YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_FgMwAgvORd1IwlH1nlC9g

In this episode of Talkin' Shop, Brandon and Nick tackle a critical decision for shop growth: financing new CNC equipment versus paying with cash. Discover why using cash reserves might be slowing you down and how strategic leveraging can protect your cash flow and scale your business faster in 2025 and beyond. Brandon argues that financing a productive asset, like a CNC machine, should be viewed as a growth tool, not just debt. He compares it to hiring an employee—you wouldn't pay their entire year's salary upfront, so why deplete your capital on a machine that generates revenue?. The discussion covers how waiting to pay cash can lead to missed opportunities, lost revenue streams, and falling behind competitors. Preserving your working capital allows you to cover unexpected expenses, materials, and labor, while the machine pays for itself through increased efficiency and margins. Later, the hosts answer audience questions, including the best laser table for a beginner (like the 2kW single-phase fiber laser) , which CNC router to start with for a cabinetry business (the RC or Pro Series) , and technical questions about ball screw systems. Learn how investing in American-made CNC technology from Lakeville, Minnesota, can be the most strategic decision for your shop's ROI What's your take on financing vs. cash? In this week's edition of the PodKaz, hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski look back on the first loss by No. 1 Wisconsin in nearly a year. Minnesota moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 after scoring four times in the third period for a 5-1 win in Madison last Friday, but the Badgers gained a series split a day later. We also look back on Ohio State needing to rally for an overtime win at St. Thomas before Joy Dunne's four-goal, six-point game led a rout in the second game. Minnesota Duluth also got a road sweep against St. Cloud State in another series between WCHA teams in the top 15.Cornell and Penn State kept their undefeated starts to the season, with the Big Red beating Yale and Brown. After the break, we preview the Rivalry Series games between the U.S. and Canada in Cleveland on Thursday and Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday.A Saturday game between No. 11 Clarkson and No. 7 Quinnipiac is a highlight of the upcoming week's NCAA schedule. The PodKaz is a production of USCHO.com. “[The marathon] rewards people that are patient, consistent, and build up strength. I've got a good engine, so late in the race I feel like my cardio holds up very well. As long as the body holds up, it's going to be a good day!”My guest for today's episode is Joel Reichow, who could be viewed as a surprise story of the New York City Marathon and the top American finisher in 2025.In a race packed with Olympians and pros backed by some of the biggest brands in running, Joel — a 32-year-old unsponsored athlete from Minnesota — ran the best race of his life, clocking 2:09:56 to finish sixth overall and claim top American honors. At 24 miles, he was still in 12th and starting to get a bit tired. Then he saw the front starting to come back and ripped a 4:45 mile to catch them. He held strong through Central Park and won out for the U.S. honors over the likes of Charles Hicks and Joe Klecker.Joel's marathon journey hasn't been flashy. He ran for South Dakota State under Rod DeHaven, grinded through years on the roads, and is working at a running store while chasing marathon miles.Patience paid off, and finally, he put it all together on one perfect day in New York.We talk about what it takes to break through, how he's supporting the dream and his recollection of Sunday's race. Joel may have come into New York as a name few knew but now he's certainly on most people's radars.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Joel Reichow | @joelreichow on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation.
