Alan welcomes back Dr. Tim Anderson to discuss the transformative impact of digital technology on modern dentistry. The episode kicks off with a brief mention of Dr. Anderson's recent "Midas tour" focused on partial coverage restorations, which serves as a springboard into a deeper discussion about the dramatic technological shift since their dental school days at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Anderson reflects on what he'd tell his younger self, highlighting the near-unbelievable advancements in: Intraoral scanning and the power of AI in design. 3D printing and same-day ceramic restorations. The doctors agree that while technology is crucial, the patient interaction and communication it enables are the real game-changers, using large monitors and engaging patients in the co-discovery process. They delve into the exciting evolution of 3D-printed materials, moving beyond simple resins to explore high-translucency ceramics and "digital press stereolithography" (Midas), which opens the door for layered, customized restorations that mimic natural tooth anatomy. The conversation touches on the enduring debate between full-coverage crowns and partial coverage (onlays), noting the current culture's tendency toward black-and-white treatment planning. Dr. Anderson expresses excitement for new workflows and materials that bridge the gap between traditional artistry (like gold inlays) and digital precision, ultimately focusing on how technology empowers better patient care and education. Daniel 11 remains one of the most historically verifiable and textually complex prophecies in the entire Bible. This episode examines the remarkable precision of biblical prophecy through the lens of ancient history — tracing the rise and fall of empires such as Egypt, Syria, and Rome, and how their geopolitical movements were foretold centuries in advance.Drawing from ancient historical records, archaeology, and scriptural analysis, this in-depth study situates Daniel 11 within the larger context of Near Eastern history. From the rival dynasties of the Ptolemies and Seleucids to the imperial ascent of Rome, this discussion reveals how the Book of Daniel captures the unfolding of world events with astonishing historical accuracy. This lecture-style exploration bridges theology, history, and prophecy — uncovering how divine sovereignty and human ambition converge across centuries of recorded history. For those interested in biblical prophecy, historical evidence, or the academic study of Scripture, this episode offers a rigorous and intellectually grounded examination of Daniel 11 and the empires it predicted.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The conspiracy theories about everything are no more including those of us who had doubts about the election process.Just three weeks to Election Day, and voter fraud and efforts to stop it were a big topic of discussion at the State Capitol. The House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee, asking some pointed questions about the criminal case involving Ronnie Williams and Lorraine Lee Combs.Federal prosecutors say during the 2021-22 election cycle, the Nevada couple filled out hundreds of fraudulent voter registration applications in 13 Minnesota counties.“There doesn't seem to be a check when this group submitted the fraudulent applications,” noted Rep. Kristin Robbins, R-Maple Grove, the committee chair. “So, I don't know where that breakdown comes in.”Court documents filed in June say Williams and Combs filled out the forms with fake names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers, and that an unnamed foundation paid for them.Prosecutors say the foundation paid Williams for each completed application.State lawmakers passed a law in 2023 banning that kind of pay-for-play operation, where the couple was paid based on how many applications they finished. The motive, authorities say, was money. “This is not a case about fraudulent votes,” Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon told the panel. “This is also a case of the system working to detect those applications so they could be appropriately challenged and referred to law enforcement for prosecution and conviction.”He notes local elections officials noticed irregularities in the paperwork and notified authorities.Simon says his office, the elections personnel and the FBI tracked down the bad actors. We asked Robbins if the committee had found any new evidence of fraud at this point.“You know, we have not seen it,” she says. “But we are very concerned that the foundation in question gets their entire budget from federal and state grants. I want to talk to the health department and other departments that are their grantees.”Robbins says she'd like to see a process where the Secretary of State's Office would vet registration applications before they are sent out to county elections officials. But after the meeting, DFL members say they're not sure committee hearings are the best way to investigate these kinds of irregularities. “I mean, in this committee, we've had some people the press has identified. Nothing through this committee process at all,” says Rep. Dave Pinto, DFL-St. Paul. “Of course, we want to make sure our elections are secure as possible and there is access to the ballot as well. That's the belief that got discussed quite a bit.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Today, we're thrilled to speak with Wookiye Win. Wookiye Win, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, is an artist and educator. She teaches the Dakota language for the Dakota Language Nest Preschool program at the Institute of Child Development on the University of Minnesota campus. She's also the illustrator of Dakota language children's books. Wookiye comes from an artistic family and has always been creating art. But she never thought of herself as an artist. But when the COVID pandemic hit, she started looking for something to do at home and turned to watercolors. Not only did she find a theme for her art in nature but also found the pigments for her watercolors. The idea of making her own paints started when she collected pipestone dust left from her father's pipestone making. Since then, she has expanded her homemade palette to include marigold, red ochre, yellow ochre, nettle, among others. It's her passion to revitalize the Dakota language. She makes an effort to speak it at home and work and to always learn more. Together with her husband, also a language revitalizer, Wookiye Win shares five kids and a home in St. Paul.-----Hosts / Producers: Leah Lemm, Cole Premo Editor: Britt Aamodt Editorial support: Emily Krumberger Mixing & mastering: Chris Harwood

In October 2023, Rural Voice co-founder and host Kerri Miller traveled to Little Falls to talk about social isolation in greater Minnesota. Community members said it's easy to feel disconnected and alone, especially if they struggle with some kind of mental health challenge. This September, Miller took the same question to Wadena. Social isolation is when a person objectively doesn't have relationships or contact with others. It's similar to loneliness, which is when people subjectively feel isolated. Both are rampant in rural communities, especially among older residents. And because social isolation is tied closely to other health outcomes, it has implications for all. Rural Voice in Wadena Wadena residents swapped stories of recognizing isolation in their community. They also shared ideas for combatting it, which ranged from systemic overhauls, like bringing in more therapists, to more personal interventions, like how churches and community organizations can respond to neighbors who seem alone. At the heart of the discussion was Linda J. Camp, the creator of The Backup Plan. A Minnesota-based innovator with 28 years in the public sector and 15 years teaching adult learners, Camp's journey into solo aging advocacy was deeply personal. "I am one," she shared candidly, reflecting on her own life without family nearby and the long-distance caregiving struggles for her father, who lived alone in northern New York until dementia complicated his independence. "He looked like he had the support he needed, but he was actually a solo too."Frustrated by the lack of tailored resources—barriers like rural isolation, urban overload, and suburban silos—Camp applied her systems-thinking expertise to design a scalable model. Over a decade of experimentation, she tested formats: from top-down information sessions (too passive) to unstructured peer groups (lacking direction). The result? A flexible framework that empowers rather than dictates."It's a model, not a program," Camp clarified in response to an audience query. Unlike expert-led workshops with predefined topics, The Backup Plan is a bottom-up approach for building self-managing peer groups of 6-12 solo agers. Key components include:A Sponsoring Organization: Provides free meeting space and helps recruit participants through newsletters, word-of-mouth, or community networks. "They don't have to do very much," Camp noted—just enough to remove logistical hurdles like rental fees.A Coach: Not a facilitator, but a guide who "keeps an eye on things" like a basketball coach from the sidelines. "The coach doesn't dribble the ball," Camp quipped, emphasizing the role's focus on gentle steering, feedback, and resource nudges.Peer-Driven Tools: Free participant and coach manuals (copyrighted but licensed at no cost) offer frameworks, not checklists. They encourage results-oriented thinking: "Here's what we're trying to accomplish. Recognize that you are the expert of your own life." Examples abound for diverse contexts, from rural resource scarcity to urban abundance. The model's goals are threefold: equip organizations to better serve solos, cultivate communities for shared problem-solving, and motivate individuals to tackle tough tasks like healthcare directives. "People hate doing them," Camp admitted, "but it makes a difference if everyone else is struggling too—they can talk it out and divide the research."Research underpins the peer focus. Camp cited studies, including one from the University of Pennsylvania on the Oprah Book Club, showing peers drive change more than experts. "People buy books because their friend said it was good, not because Oprah did," she explained. This "tribe" dynamic builds not just plans, but lasting bonds that combat isolation. In Minnesota, the impact is tangible: 12 active groups, two launching soon, and seven more organizations in the pipeline—more in greater Minnesota than the Twin Cities metro. "We're offering new infrastructure where resources are limited," Camp said proudly.Julia Ockuly, the first Backup Plan coach and volunteer service coordinator at Longfellow Seward Healthy Seniors in Minneapolis, brought the model to life. Her group, part of a "living at home block nurse program," started in 2021 amid pandemic restrictions—fittingly, their inaugural meeting was outdoors in a gazebo. "We had about eight people," Ockuly recalled. "It was coming out of isolation, and they've stuck with it."Challenges arose: Ockuly initially struggled to step back from leadership, and socializing often eclipsed planning. "People wanted to connect, which makes sense," she said. But evolution followed. The core group of 8-12 now blends monthly socials with guest speakers on topics like healthcare directives, solo travel, death doulas, green burials, and nature accessibility. "We've delved into end-of-life planning, but also community politics and safety," Ockuly shared.
