How some of the biggest hits of his career came together with the biggest names in rock and metal, like Sully Erna of Godsmack, Tyler Connolly of Theory, Ivan Moody of 5FDP, Mick Mars of Motley Crue and more. We play a game with his song titles…talk about his fiancé and grandpa, and even get a Trailer Park boys impression and even got him to sing a few of his favorite Merle Haggard lyrics. As Cory Marks continues to celebrate his latest album, 'Sorry For Nothing,' he also dives into his love of Ozzy Osbourne and why he wanted to work with producer Kevin Churko.

Combining rock and metal with country music is a brave move. Fans of each genre individually are parochial in their love of music and unlikely to take to any bastardisation with any other form of sonic entertainment. It takes a person with confidence and conviction to even attempt such a marriage, but when done right even the staunchest of purists can do nothing except sit back, listen, and enjoy. Such is the case with Cory Marks and his body of work. By integrating elements of each of the above genres with blatant disregard for convention or history, Marks has found his niche in a blurry world of music with a striking and engaging mixing of styles that reflects his own upbringing and eclectic tastes. His recent - and appropriately titled - album Sorry For Nothing accentuates his individuality, bringing together country, rock and metal in such a way that makes it impossible to resist. Collaborations with artists such as Sully Erna (Godsmack), Travis Tritt, Mick Mars and DL of Bad Wolves have helped bridge the divide between genres, but it is Marks' inate ability to transcend musical barriers that makes him stand out in a musical climate that is becoming increasingly predictable. HEAVY spent some time with Marks to find out his thoughts on music. "It's been a project I've been waiting to release and working on for the last four years," he smiled, "so to finally have it out… it's nice. Now it's up to the world to see how they acknowledge it, and hopefully they love it." We ask him to dive deeper into Sorry For Nothing musically. "I've always stayed true to who I am and what I believe in or what I enjoy doing," he said. "As you know I'm country, I'm rock, and I'm a little bit of metal and in this record you have songs that I've written about a year ago all the way to songs written seven or eight years ago. It's thirteen songs that I think represent me the best right now. What I've been through, where I've been and how far I've come and where I plan on to continue to go. Hence the album title, Sorry For Nothing." In the full interview, Cory discusses the blending of genres and how he makes them work, the potential risks of combining genres, the guest artists on the album and why they were chosen, finding the balance in music, the pressures of following his hugely successful single Outlaws & Outsiders, how his sound has changed over his career, what he has learnt about himself and his music on this journey and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Cory Marks is a Canadian country-influenced hard rock singer, but he was doing it before the names Hardy and Jelly Roll were mainstays on the rock charts. As his new album Sorry For Nothing hits the streets and the streams, I caught up with the Outlaws and Outsiders singer in between acoustic gigs opening for Theory of A Deadman. His story starts like most Canadians, on the ice, then to the air, and now to rock and roll stardom.

North Bay, Ontario Country-Rocker Cory Marks joins me on the podcast to chat about the success of his singles "Outlaws & Outsiders" featuring Travis Tritt, Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch & Mick Mars of Motley Crue (Top 10 Rock hit in the U.S. & a Gold single in Canada and over 25 Million streams on Spotify) + "Blame It On The Double" featuring Theory Of A Deadman's Tyler Connelly and Jason Hook, formerly of Five Finger Death Punch. Cory's debut album Who I Am received a 2021 Canadian Country Music Assocation nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. Balancing his love of Country and Rock and choosing to record songs in both genres including a beautiful Merle Haggard cover, Cory is paving his own road in the music world. Cory tells a great story about meeting the legendary Hag & how music led to a friendship with Country icon Travis Tritt.
Mixing country music with the hard-hitting stomp of rock & roll, Cory Marks prepares to release new music. Full of autobiographical storytelling, guitar-driven anthems, drinking songs, and breakup ballads, his songs are rooted in the influence of Cory's hometown, where he grew up surrounded by the salt-of-the-earth residents of North Bay, Ontario. It was there where he began playing drums at ten years old. Whenever he wasn't banging along to songs by Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush, he was listening to his parents' country records, developing a deep appreciation for outlaws like Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Those two genres — classic country and amped-up rock — would eventually join forces in Marks' own music, earning him a string of gigs with heavyweights like Toby Keith and Brantley Gilbert along the way. Before launching his songwriting career, and changing the trajectory of his life, Marks would prove himself in the hockey rink and pursue dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. He strapped on his first pair of skates at 3 years old, eventually earning a spot on the university hockey team at Royal Military College, and was a dominating presence on the ice, thanks to his 6-foot 1 inch, 220-pound frame. Prior to attending college, he enrolled in a private pilot school where he logged in almost 100 flight hours and eventually had the opportunity to fly one of those hours with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds in the summer of 2017. He continues working towards his private pilot license. While in college, he never stopped playing music but did so privately… that is, until he joined his teammates at a local bar one night, and found himself pushed onstage when the regularly-scheduled musician took a break. "My friends knew I played a little music, and they were chanting for me to do some songs," he remembers. "It was a packed little bar. I did two originals and two covers, and afterward, people were coming up to me and asking where I was playing next. I didn't have an answer for them, because this was literally the first time I'd ever sung in front of anyone." Cory began making weekly trips to the bar, hopping on stage with each visit. As time went on, he wrote a new batch of songs, hit the road, and hasn't looked back since. A road warrior, Cory has built a strong following not only in Canada but also in America, where he has been recording with award-winning producer, Kevin Churko. Along with Kevin's son Kane – the Juno Award-winning producer and songwriter, the three of them worked together in Churko's Las Vegas studio, capturing the energy and electricity of Cory's live show. It was a natural partnership. Like Cory, Kevin had grown up playing drums, eventually expanding his career to include collaborations with country artists like Shania Twain and rock icons like Ozzy Osbourne. "We both appreciate country music greats like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, but we love the heavier side of rock & roll and metal, too," Cory says of his producer and mentor. "We decided to mash it all together. It's funny because when I was growing up, my favorite records were Ozzy records. I dreamt of having that kind of production on one of my own records. Sure enough, seven years into my career, I've partnered with the producer who worked on all those albums. What a cool circle."
Today's guest is Jim Cressman. Jim is the CEO and President at Invictus Entertainment Group, Founder and President at Big Star Recordings Inc, and music agent to some pretty profound artists including Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, Cory Marks, and Brett Kissell. Jim has a big role and a big heart and today's topics of conversation are just as immense. In all honesty, this episode is a LOT. Jim and I talk about the pandemic and how it has influenced both of our lives - both personally and in our careers (as you can imagine, there's quite a bit to discuss here). We also talk about personal experiences with healing the body and achieving optimal health, and how traditional Western Medicine is really failing society as a whole when it comes to promoting total-body wellbeing. Jim shares his thoughts, wisdom and experiences in a way I think many may derive impactful meaning and powerful take-aways from. I encourage you to listen to this podcast with an open heart and open mind, and to take pause when you find yourself triggered - to ask yourself what story you are creating and how the thoughts and opinions shared resonate with your mind, body and soul. CCMAs have come and gone and much like a few years ago a got to go as media to cover the festivities. This episode is Part 1 of 2 for my CCMA interviews which includes Nice Horse, Kendra Kay & Jason Benoit, Manny Blu, Shawn Austin, The Prairie States and Cory Marks. Nice Horse, Shawn and Cory were all nominated for awards this year. Nice Horse, an all female band from Calgary, who were up for Interactive Artist of the year for a 4th time, and Brandi and Krista were up for Video Director of the year for the groups video “High School.” I got to talk with 3 of the 4 members Brandi, Katie and Krista as the fourth horse Tara is currently on the road performing with another act. They are hilarious as they are talented love getting to hear them perform as I did in London. Kendra Kay and Jason Beniot, two award winning singers who came together for a holiday song "How Great Thou Art" now available today (Dec 3rd) on streaming platforms. This was a very enjoyable interview that was hilarious and fun to be a part of. Country Punk ? Well that is Manny Blu, a former MMA fighter turned country musician is bringing his own blend and take on country music and even has a brand new EP “Country Punk” coming out New Years eve. Shawn Austin, a 2021 CCMA Rising Star Nominee is the flag ship artist for the Big Loud/ Dallas Smith venture Local Hay. His debut single for imprint Tailgate to Heaven with Chris Lane has done insanely well over the fall. Next I got to speak with 3 of the members of the Edmonton group The Prairie States. These guys have a great sound and were one of the first groups in Canada to get in NFTs. This group kills it at the Alberta Country Music Awards and looks to break in on the national award scene soon. Last but certainly not least in part one of CCMA interviews is someone I've been dying to interview. He was up for Alternative Country Album of the Year with Who I Am, and who is he ? well he is Cory Marks. The North Bay native has charted well in the US on both the rock and country charts with his blend of the 2 genres but somehow has only found success on the rock charts here in Canada, but that doesn't phase him. Next Week is Part 2 featuring Dustin Bird, Ty Baynton, UK artist Katy Hurt, Ty Hunter of the Hunter Brothers and Mallory Johnson
Cory Marks was in Red Deer for a show at the Rodeo a couple weeks back and we had the chance to chat with him in Communal Creative Studios for this week's episode of The Road The Stage. On this week's episode Mike is digging into the world of Canadian country rock! First up, Cory Marks (3:20) returns to chat about writing his latest Gold-selling single, “Outlaws and Outsiders” and album, ‘Who I Am', which Billboard called a “long-awaited next-generation country rock record.” Mark discusses his years between albums and the changes he made to his career, the serendipity that led to working with famed producer Kevin Churko, and a lot more. Later, the guys from highly-revered country-rock trio The Road Hammers (28:00) join Mike to discuss songwriting, egos, what “country music” even means, and a lot more. An undeniable staple in Canadian country music, with over 25 million streams, five CCMA Awards and a Juno Award win; The Road Hammers are Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy and Chris Byrne. They formed in 2004 with a plan of making just one concept record, but more than 15 years later they can't stop writing and playing together. With Mike, the guys explain what keeps them together and how the style and spirit of The Road Hammers has evolved.

He is now part of the Better Noise Music family as their flagship Country artist.
