Doug chats with Peter Burke of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce to preview the upcoming 50th Annual Nantucket Daffodil Festival, happening Friday, April 24th through Sunday, April 26th. Peter highlights some of the weekend's signature traditions, including the Origins of the Festival, the Flower Show at the Nantucket Inn, the antique car show on Main Street, and the always popular car parade ending in a Sconset picnic. This year, there's a big push for community volunteers to help make the weekend run smoothly, with opportunities available across multiple events. Peter also emphasizes the importance of good behavior throughout the weekend. Celebrate responsibly, respect the island, and help keep Nantucket safe and clean, while encouraging attendees to take advantage of public transportation like the NRTA Wave. Daffodil Day is one of the world's most iconic and widely supported annual campaigns, raising both funds and awareness for cancer. In Slovakia, it is organised by the League Against Cancer and represents the country's largest public fundraising initiative, promoting solidarity with cancer patients. This Thursday, April 16, volunteers wearing the signature yellow daffodils and carrying donation boxes will once again take to the streets, marking the campaign's 30th anniversary. On this occasion, Eva Kováčová — who has been with the League Against Cancer since 2002 and now serves as its Executive Director — shares insights into the impact and significance of this long-standing initiative. The latest episode of Slovak Sound Check focuses on adjectives and their opposites, exploring common word pairs.

Time to feed your Daffodils as the bulbs have put a lot of energy into flowering and as the flowers are dying off you can give them some foliar feed to help them put more energy into the bulb for another good show next year. It is also worth deadheading them after flowering but leave the rest of the foliage for at least 6 to 8 weeks after flowering before cutting down. It's time to plant Onions and Shallots, David grows both, sets are quicker so if you haven't planted any yet it's probably best to sow sets now. Peter Likes Silverskin Onions but hasn't grown them yet and Onions are a great way to keep cats off your vegetable patch as cats don't like the smell of them. If they go to seed either chop the flower heads off early or do as David does and leave them for the bees as they love Onion flowers.Time to get your Sweet Peppers in as they take a while to set fruit, but keep them warm and frost free as they don't like the cold. Peter loves Padron Peppers so he will be planting his this week.We also need to plant our Globe Artichokes now, a large plant so perfect for people who have lots of space. They make a good plant for the border if you like a nice architectural plant. If you are planting Asparagus crowns early spring is a good time to get them in. They do take a few years to establish before you can crop them but they can live a long time, 15 to 20 years.David shares a new idea for recycling and what he uses to germinate his seeds in. At the Garden Centre we sell Fibrepots which are another great product that you can plant your young plants out in without disturbing the roots. Newspaper pots are another option for those that like to recycle. To plant your seeds in we recommend getting new seed compost each year, to improve drainage you can add Perlite and check the date of the seed as some seeds go off after a couple of years and germination levels drop. Our thanks to Chiltern Music Therapy for providing the music. Good news on the Irish cancer society's Daffodil Day, survivors will face shorter waits for mortgage protection insurance under new Right to Be Forgotten legislation. Amy Nolan, Director of Clinical Affairs, Irish Cancer Society has the latest.
Today is Daffodil Day. You'll see people out on the streets collecting money to raise vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society.Andrea decided it would be a good opportunity to be a bit proactive with her health and go and have her skin checked!
Seeing as it's getting towards autumn, a number of bulbs need planting in the garden - I'll pick on a few of them. Tulip Fabulous early spring colour – remember the historical stuff with the Dutch making heaps of money out of often virus-ridden “varieties” (early 1600-s AD) – around Fl 3000.00 per bulb while the average yearly wage of a skilled craftsman was around Fl 300.00. The bubble burst in 1637 AD. These days they are a bit cheaper and more reliable. They grow well in the South Island with very cool winters – up north they need winter chilling (taking out of soil and put in fridge for 8 weeks). In mild climates it pays to plant later in the year, say May/June. But in the South Island, planting the bulbs can start in a few weeks; order them now! Some great bulb outlets: Bulbs direct, Garden Post, NZBulbs, Fiesta Bulbs, and Hadstock Farm in Springston. Work the soil to 20 cm deep in sunny to semi-shade position (generally bulbs prefer well-drained soils). Plant 15 cm spaced and 15 cm deep. In warmer climates, plant them a bit deeper (20 cm deep). A bit of mulch over the planting site will keep weeds down. Bulb fertiliser is recommended and after flowering some blood and bone will feed the green leaves. Do NOT cut those green leaves after flowering: they gather sunlight (photosynthesis) for re-stocking the food reserves inside the bulbs underground. Narcissus Daffodils Prep the soil to 40 cm or so – daffodil roots go way down! Plant them 10 cm deep and space 10 cm apart in well-drained soils (perhaps under deciduous trees). Hagley Park is a great example. Planting them in full sun is okay too. Mass planting works really well, and bulbs come up year after year and they'll multiply. Apart from the Far North, the whole of New Zealand can grow them. Leucojum Leucojum is also known as “snowflake”, and in the Netherlands it's known as the “Zomer Klokje” (summer clock). This wonderful plant has a special place in my heart: we used to have this rare and endangered native species in the wetlands where I used to roam as a nature nerd in the Netherlands. There are many different varieties now, flowering in spring, and planting is best done in early April. Must get some more! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An Ennis man who survived lymphoma cancer is now encouraging others to give back and support those facing the disease. Michael Doab was diagnosed in 2014 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy—but today, he's using his experience to raise awareness and funds for Irish Cancer Society ahead of Daffodil Day tomorrow (Friday, 20th March). He's been sharing his story and urging the local community to get involved and support those affected by cancer. Michael joined Alan in studio to explain just how much people's support can make a difference. Image © Clare FM
For her debut novel, Helen Bain chose one of her heroes as her focus: poet, author, arch-confessionist and genius, Sylvia Plath. The Daffodil Days spans a year and a half in Plath's life, during which she and husband Ted Hughes head to Devon seeking the idyll of country living. During that time, Plath completed The Bell Jar, gave birth to a son, Nicholas, and wrote the poems that would be posthumously published as Ariel. But she also threw herself full-heartedly into the Devon life, and it's this and what it tells us about Plath, which Helen so beautifully explores in The Daffodil Days. She chats to Mick about Plath, female genius, daffodils, hope and bellringing. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to a space of quiet centering and shared breath. This is Gentle Fridays, a weekly gathering for rest and co-regulation—a practice rooted in the understanding that our nervous systems seek calm and connection, just as animals in a herd breathe together to find safety. In this session, we come together to acknowledge what we're feeling, to place our ingredients on the table before making the soup. We read from David Whyte's "Consolations" on the true meaning of maturity—the courage to inhabit the past, present, and future all at once. We pull a card from the Flower Speaks deck, receiving the message of the Daffodil and the power of concentrated thought. This is an invitation to build resilience, not as a sprint but as a marathon. It is for anyone seeking a nervous system regulation practice, plant spirit guidance, or simply a reflective community where all of your being is welcome. A reminder that in challenging times, we are skilled chefs in a shared kitchen, and together, we can make something nourishing.Featured in this session:A guided breathing and centering practice.A community check-in and shared reflection.A reading on "Maturity" from David Whyte's Consolations.Plant spirit insight from the Flower Speaks oracle deck (Daffodil).Shared wisdom from the community on practices for staying centered.Join the Sky House Community:Explore our herbal courses and garden gatherings: http://skyhouseherbs.com

Felicia is joined by Bryan Loomis to discuss Arthur C. Miller's imprint on one of cinema's greatest achievements in cinematography, How Green Was My Valley (1941). We chat about how he understood John Ford's clear vision for this film and why the black and white imagery adds to the comfort reflected in this family's story. Send us a textMost people donate because they want to help. Few ever find out what actually happens to their money. Philanthropy has a trust problem. Nonprofits have a transparency problem. Donors want clarity but rarely get it. And donor-advised funds have become a quiet holding place for billions of untapped charitable capital. After fifteen years working inside philanthropy, Sarah Angello could not ignore the friction anymore. She saw the outdated systems. She saw the lost potential. She saw how giving had become complicated when it should feel meaningful. So she left a stable career, stepped into tech, and cofounded Daffodil, a fintech platform designed to rebuild trust in the nonprofit sector by making charitable giving transparent, simple, and accessible. In this conversation, Sarah explains the gap no one was addressing, how donor-advised funds actually work, why impact reporting is broken, and how she is solving a systemic problem with zero-burden, real-time data. She opens up about raising capital as a woman, choosing cofounders, navigating risk, and the lesson that shaped her leadership: almost everything is fixable. If you have ever given to a nonprofit, wondered where your money went, or thought about starting something meaningful, this episode will change the way you see philanthropy and the business behind it.Chapters this episode explores:The moment Sarah realized philanthropy needed a complete resetWhy donor-advised funds hold more than 250 billion dollars that rarely reaches nonprofitsWhat the GoFundMe controversy revealed about trust in the sectorHow Daffodil built a system to deliver real-time impact reporting with zero burden on nonprofitsWhy transparency is the next frontier in charitable givingWhat she learned moving from nonprofit bureaucracy to tech speedHow she chose her cofounders and why their history mattersThe reality of raising money as a woman in a male-dominated funding environmentWhy she believes fear of being copied is fear of weak executionThe early mistake that taught her that almost everything is fixableKey lessons:Transparency is not optional; it is the foundation of impactGood ideas are everywhere; execution is the differentiatorDonors do not stop giving because they lack generosity but because they lack visibilityFounders should build in public, not hide in fearCareers are long, and mistakes rarely ruin themContactWebsite: www.getdaffodil.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/getdaffodil/ Email: sarah@getdaffodil.com--- Subscribe and ReviewIf you loved this episode, drop us a review, share it with a badass woman in your life, and subscribe to Badass Women in Business wherever you get your podcasts. With over 89 cultivars of daffodil, the Backhouse Rossie Estate in Fife, Scotland, holds the only scientific collection of Narcissus in the world. The family's work revolutionised daffodil breeding in the 19th and early 20th century and inspired the Backhouse Heritage Daffodil Collection. Continuing to preserve and celebrate daffodils at the estate, including a registered collection of spring flowering Narcissus with Plant Heritage, direct descendent of the Backhouse family, Caroline Thomson brings to light the history of the Backhouse daffodils. This week we're exploring the lives of the pioneering women gardeners of the 20th century who paved the way for women in horticulture today… through music. Composer Omri Kochavi will be sharing how he was inspired by the book ‘An Almost Impossible Thing' by Fiona Davison to create what he calls a 'horti-musical'. Now's the perfect time to think ahead to spring, and daffodil devotee Camilla Bassett-Smith will be joining us to share some of her favourite cultivars, and top tips on getting the most out of your bulbs. And finally we're taking stock after a hot, dry summer. We visit Alex Paines at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon to explore how the gardeners there are adapting what, where, and how they plant.
