We live in a broken world filled with broken people. Because of this, everyone experiences some level of trauma. Unfortunately, past trauma experiences can greatly impact our lives, perceptions, and interactions in the present. Many of us have become adept at numbing our pain. In order to heal, however, we need to have the courage to unpack and process our trauma stories with truth but also with a great deal of self-kindness. In this episode, Dr. Allender and Cathy Loerzel, coauthors of Redeeming Heartache, released by Zondervan, share some archetype mentalities that often stem from trauma, why it's so important we learn to order our trauma stories, and how we can grow in greater freedom. In conclusion, we need to ask one of the hardest questions, one in which takes bracing ourselves for a hurricane. We also have to be willing to answer it truthfully, and as difficult as it may be, with as much grace, hope, and love that we can muster. They discuss in this episode: How “unity” is used in spiritual abuse What real “unity” is biblically Profile of healing Unity, unfortunately, can be used as a weapon or tool for spiritual abuse and church hurt. It is used, not for, but against others for many reasons. On the contrary, biblical unity is a mystery. Exploring Ephesians 2:11ff, we find that unity is reached in the faith and knowledge of the Son of God and become mature. Then, in healing, there is a passionate drive of anger that is easily understood concerning forgiveness and unity, and what moving on entails. The Trio returns to present part 3 of the series on spiritual abuse and church hurt. In this episode we learn that a church's character and function will reflect how it is lead, so therefore, abusive leading leads to abused outcomes. There are markers of an abusive culture, such as a dysfunctional family may operate. Those markers may include, but are not limited to: No talking... Including asking the abused what happened. Control and coercion, which is a violation of trust. Dependency on leadership in which cannot be found elsewhere, especially since they have spiritual authority. Dependency on leadership is necessary due to the leaders divine vision to lead. The great assumption that leaders have the best interest for as many people as possible for the greater impact and for over the longest period of time. Fears of consequences. Segregating the so-called "troublemakers" from others. To continue the discussion, Dominick gives a breakdown of Amos 7 and discusses the difference between the prophet Amos and the priest of Bethel, Amaziah. (Visit our Bible Studies on the book of Amos for more.) Living in a culture of hurt - we all hurt, but how we are comforted and work through healing requires more vulnerability, which makes it harder than ever thought to be. Part of spiritual abuse includes a type of safeguard (ie. no talking). Tear those safeguards down and establish the correct ones (ie. knowledge and awareness of abuse). The Trio is back with Part 2 of the series on Spiritual Abuse and Church Hurt. In this episode the abuser and victim are identified: Abuse may not be a thought at all: For various reasons, the crew discuss why the abuser and victim may not even know that spiritual abuse is happening. Common sayings and phrases of abuser and victim: Here, the crew processes more in depth the definition of spiritual abuse and common behaviors and phrases that are often said in light of not knowing that the abuse is happening. Scripture as weapon and avoidance of Scripture: There is a place in which Scripture plays a part in abuse. The crew discusses how it is used as a weapon and why the victim tends to avoid Scripture thereafter. Remedy is not what it seems: For prevention and forgiveness, measures need to be taken. Patterns need broken. Equipping needs done. There is no over night solution to spiritual abuse, but it begins with listening. Stories are powerful. We crave stories. They move us and impact us. Isn't it interesting how God communicates His plan of redemption through the STORY of Scripture? He is the master Storyteller! And as His image bearers, we are also storytellers. We each have a story. Yet, many of us don't know how to communicate our stories to others. We don't realize how our stories can impact how we share the gospel and disciple others. Some of us think our stories are boring; our testimonies seem to be void of drama. Others of us think our stories are too hard and may even discredit us from talking about God with others. But the truth is, all of our stories matter. We can craft and share our personal stories to the glory of God! In this conversation, we are joined by Kyra Riley Daniels, and she helps us work through the topic of personal stories and storytelling. Kyra is a staff writer at The Daily Grace Co., but along with her degree in theology from Westminster, she has a degree in theater from Yale University. Here are some questions we work through in this interview:  Why are stories powerful? (11:13) Each of us has a story; we're storytellers. How does this impact how we share the gospel and even disciple others? (15:33) Some believers may think, “Nothing dramatic has happened in my life. My testimony is boring.” Why do these stories matter? What do these stories tell us about God? (20:03) Others may think, “My story is full of really hard things.” Maybe some of us feel like our personal stories discredit us from talking about God or from sharing the gospel. Why do these stories matter? What do these stories tell us about God? (24:40) How can we craft our own personal stories to the glory of God? What practical tips do you have for us to develop our personal testimony in order to share the gospel? (29:12) How can we, as ordinary people, grow in the art of storytelling in order to further the kingdom of God? (32:41)   Resources mentioned in this episode: Dr. Dan B. He continues to serve the college as a distinguished scholar of biblical studies. He is one of the main translators of the New Living Translation and has even consulted on other translations of the Bible including  the Message, the New Century Version, and the Holman Standard Bible. He has written or co-authored more than 20 books, two of which we are using as resources during our Ecclesiastes It's Time series. His book Breaking the Idols of Your Heart: How to Navigate the Temptations of Life which he wrote with Dr. Dan B. Whether in a theater or in a chapel, she is a dynamic performer who blurs the lines of what church music sounds like, captivating and inviting audiences to sing along. While many of her songs like “We Will Feast In the House Of Zion” and “Thy Mercy My God” have settled into regular rotation in Christian worship services internationally, she has also had songs recorded by All Sons And Daughters, ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Audrey Assad, A Rocha Compilation, Bifrost Arts, Caedmon's Call and others. 3 Questions To Help You Discover Your Purpose

Fear invites us to experience life differently than love does. What we experience, we will share. You're in the right place if you want to experience and share love--not fear. You're in the right place if you're hungry to discover your true PURPOSE in life and, perhaps, let go of an invalid identity that's wearing you out and keeping you afraid. In this episode, I share a vulnerable story from my childhood about an experience that offered me an invalid identity. And I admit that my real destiny just sat waiting for me while I pretended my purpose was something God never said it was. Doug and I share our own answers to 3 powerful questions that can help you discover your purpose, too, in a world without fear, and we offer these TAKEAWAYS: "Maybe the journey isn't so much about becoming anything.  Maybe it's about unbecoming everything that isn't you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place." (unknown) "Fear makes us see things that aren't there, imagine things that'll never happen, connect dots and draw conclusions that are absolutely incorrect.  Love opens up our hearts to trust our loving Father.  Love inspires us to believe the best, not fear the worst.  Spend some time pondering the love God has for you."  (Susie Larson) Spend some time journaling about these 3 questions:  (1) Who am I when no one needs me? (2) What is my most passionate YES? (3) What is my most powerful NO? If you are anything like us, you’ve been a victim of comparison. As women, we have a tendency to size ourselves up, measure someone else by your own standards only to conclude after observation and the collection of just a few facts that we’re inferior or superior to them.   Whether we feel better or worse about ourselves after the comparison, it rarely leads to humility, which pleases God. Comparison robs us of joy and wastes precious energy focusing on ourselves rather than the people who have been put in our lives to serve. We are tackling the ugly game of comparison and sharing some of the ways we have overcome it. Mentioned in the Show: Books: To Be Told: God Invites You to Coauthor Your Future by Dan B. REFLECTION QUOTES “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” ~George Orwell (1903-1950), English novelist and journalist “The work of restoration cannot begin until a problem is fully faced.” ~Dan B. Allender, therapist and author “…there was something else at work, beyond any design of the Ring-maker. I can put it no plainer than by saying that Bilbo was meant to find the Ring…. In which case you also were meant to have it. And that may be an encouraging thought.” ~Gandalf to Frodo in The Lord of the Rings “We are all fragile when we don't know what our purpose is…when we feel like a swimmer in an ocean with no edge…. If you really want people to be tough…make them committed to some worldview that puts today's temporary pain in the context of a larger hope…. Emotional fragility seems like a psychological problem, but it has only a philosophical answer. People are really tough only after they have taken a leap of faith for some truth…. We live in an age when it's considered sophisticated to be disenchanted. But people who are enchanted are the real tough cookies.” ~David Brooks in “The New York Times,” August 30, 2016 “I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross. The only God I believe in is the One Nietzsche ridiculed as ‘God on the cross.' In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it? I have entered many Buddhist temples in different Asian countries and stood respectfully before the statue of the Buddha, his legs crossed, arms folded, eyes closed, the ghost of a smile playing round his mouth, a remote look on his face, detached from the agonies of the world. But each time after a while I have had to turn away. And in imagination I have turned instead to that lonely, twisted, tortured figure on the cross, nails through hands and feet, back lacerated, limbs wrenched, brow bleeding from thorn-pricks, mouth dry and intolerably thirsty, plunged in Godforsaken darkness. That is the God for me! He laid aside his immunity to pain.” ~John Stott (1921-2011), English clergyman and worldwide Christian leader “The other gods were strong; but thou wast weak; They rode, but thou didst stumble to a throne; But to our wounds only God's wounds can speak, And not a god has wounds, but thou alone.” ~“Jesus of the Scars” by Edward Shillito (1872-1948), published in the wake of WWI SERMON PASSAGE Mark 4:35-41 (ESV) 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

It is extremely difficult to watch a family member or friend struggle with an alcohol or drug addiction.  You feel so helpless.  You are uncertain as to where to turn or what to say.  Pastors, too, struggle with counseling the addict.  Hopefully this month's guest will give us some insights into the life and struggles of an addict. Our guest for this episode is John Burghauser. John is a Pastoral Care Worker with Stauros Ministries. He ministers daily to men and women who struggle with addiction. Like those he helps, John once was an addict.  But Christ delivered him from this dependency.  Now he is living our 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 which says: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. And John does just that. He ministers to addicts from a place of understanding. John and been married to his wife Peggy for 26 years.  They live just north of Baltimore in Nottingham Md.  He has served 14 years with Stauros Ministries. John Touched On John shared his journey and struggles. He also shared the work he does with Stauros Ministries. Resources Soul Talk: The Language God Longs for Us to Speak by Larry Crabb Encouragement: The Unexpected Power of Building Others Up by Larry Crabb and Dan B. Allender PLLC Spirit-Controlled Temperament by Tim LaHaye Contact Info Email John at John@Stauros.com What We Learned I think John taught us many things today.  Let me focus on just three: The first thing that struck me was the fact that we are no longer who we used to be now that we are in Christ.  You may have been an addict when Christ saved you, but now you are an addict no longer.  You are a new person in Christ. You are a child of God. Of course we are sinners saved by grace. But I think we need to modify our view of self.  I am more than a saved sinner, I am a new creature.  Pastors, you need to share that with those you counsel and those you disciple. The second thing that John taught me was the importance of the local church in the life of an addict.  The church can provide love and grace over and above that of any addiction ministry.  However, the church must remember that it is for the long-haul.  Walking with an addict can be sloppy, it will have its setbacks, and it will take time. Finally pastors, don't blow off local resources that can help the addict.  Get informed and find out what city, county, or state services can be of service.  Some will be beneficial, others will not be.  You need to know which ones can truly help the addict. Your Point of View We would love for you to share your insights.  Many of you have counseled and worked with addicts.  What has worked or not worked with you?  Please share in the comment section below. There are a limited number of Christian counselors who have been screened by them to see if they counsel by biblical principles. There are a few other biblical Christian counselors around who have not been through the network, but would be good. Do not assume someone is a biblical counselor just because they put “Christian” beside their name. We would suggest you do a brief interview before you begin with a counselor. Some questions you might ask are: Do you counsel according to biblical principals? What does that mean to you? How would you counsel someone in certain situations – such as “I’m just not happy in my marriage and I want out?” Or “I’m struggling with homosexual tendencies and I feel that is wrong. What should I do?” Or “I have been living in sexual sin, and my life is a mess. Can you help me?” Ask the counselor if they would be willing to tell you when they believe you are getting out of line with what the Bible says. Counseling can be expensive, but if it helps bring healing, it’s worth it! Many counselors will work with you on a sliding scale based on your ability to pay. If you need help to pay for counseling, talk to one of us on staff who you feel comfortable with, and the church may be able to help you cover the costs for a few sessions.
