In part 2 of this interview with Dr. Dan Allender, Heather and Dan delve into what it truly means to experience a deeper, more fulfilling marriage. Dr. Allender shared profound insights into how our past plays a crucial role in shaping our present and how this understanding can guide us toward redemption and healing in our relationships. Here are themes for our conversation today: Growth in Marriage: True growth in marriage is not just about comfort and convenience. It involves addressing past traumas and engaging with each other's differences to heal and understand the work of the spirit in our lives. The Role of Desire: Desire in a marriage is never equal, and understanding this difference can lead to greater curiosity and compassion rather than conflict. It's about exploring each other's hearts and seeking out redemption together. The Intersection of Shame and Delight: Our deepest areas of shame are often where we can find the most profound delight, especially in the context of marriage. Dr. Allender emphasized the importance of inviting kindness into our hearts to truly reflect this delight onto our spouses. Stay til the very end when Dr. Allender explains why shame and food are as interconnected as shame and sex! Learn more about Dr. Dan Allender and his new book: Deep-Rooted Marriage. As we near the close of the year, Dan and Becky Allender are continuing a podcast tradition: sitting down to reflect on their experiences and inviting you, our listeners, to join them in this meaningful practice. Dan and Becky share their own reflections—what they've learned, what they're grieving, and what they're celebrating—as they prepare to transition into a new season. They've also shared a few practical ways you can reflect on your year: Scroll through your photo gallery. Notice the moments that brought you joy, growth, or even challenge. Review your calendar. Whether you logged your events in a digital calendar or on paper, look back on events and milestones from each month. Do you notice any themes? Choose five words. If you could describe your year in just five words, what would they be? We hope you'll take a moment as we close out the year to pause, reflect, and dream for what's to come.
Why is truth-telling so hard to do within the church? Host Curtis Chang and renowned therapist and author Dan Allender explore the complex crossroads of theology and psychology, tracing the evolving, sometimes fraught relationship between the Christian church and therapy. With warmth and candor, Dr. Allender shares both his love for and ambivalence toward psychotherapy, reflecting on how it can challenge our understanding of the role trauma plays in the search for God's truth. Together, they invite listeners to consider how an imaginative rethinking of the "war within you" can open new pathways to authentic worship. This is part four and my wrap up on this series on Emotional Intelligence. It's rocked my world because I, like so many others, considered myself fairly emotionally intelligent because I can read other people fairly well, sense their emotions, and perform. Think of “How To Win Friends & Influence People.” A great and valuable skill for getting along with people at a face value level. But in long term relationships with ourselves and others, this skill doesn't get us far and we find ourselves in hard places. I know this well, as it's my story. My expert for this series was Scott Allender, author of, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, then I also brought on Ian Morgan Cron, author of The Story Of You. From my conversations I found seven key highlights that stood out to me on how to become emotionally intelligent. And I end with a special resource I'm avidly studying for my own life and progress, from another expert who is no longer alive. How To Interrupt The Loop of Your Natural Self Unawareness. This is part three in our series on Emotional Intelligence. A primary point is the foundation of emotional intelligence is not being in tune with others emotions, but your own. My muse has been Scott Allender, author of book is The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success and host of the Evolving Leader podcast. In this show I brought on a mentor of Scott's who introduced us, Ian Morgan Cron. Ian is a renowned executive coach and Enneagram expert, and just a guy with radical insightful into the human psyche. He is his own guinea pig for self-awareness and we go down the rabbit hole of discussing the loop of self UNawareness we all fall into, every day, him too. He's just gotten really good at pulling himself out interrupt the loop and bring himself back to the present, which is again, a precept of emotional intelligence. Upon our conclusion he exclamed, “Holy moly, we really covered a lot of ground.” I encourage you to listen to my series with Ian, and check out his latest book, The Story Of You and his top ranked podcast, Typology. A note, Ian recently uprooted and moved from his stylish home in Tennessee, to the middle of Mexico. Just to shake things up. He spoke with me from his new home where you'll hear cars driving by on the cobblestone streets. I hope you find intrigue in the background noise, as I did. In this episode, I'm back with emotional intelligence expert, Scott Allender, to walk through the seven key areas of life and what drives him. As you can expect, much of his drive, values, and habits come back to his quest for emotional intelligence. Spiritually he discusses his tendency to want to control the circumstances of life and his self-deception around the idea that without him things won't get done or get done right. Relationally he really wants deep connection and struggles greatly if he doesn't feel he has them. Regarding money he gets into three types of survival relating to enneagram types; self preservation, social instinct, and sexual, and how we must create balance within your natural instincts. This and more coming up. Scott's book is The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, and you can tune into him at the Evolving Leader podcast. Our world applauds people with a high IQ. And yet someone having a high IQ has zero value to me personally. It may have no value for that person or anyone. It merely says they have the possibility of capacity. It doesn't mean they can or will do anything worthwhile with it, and even if they are brilliant and figure out how to live on Mars, they may be miserable and make everyone else miserable. So what is a better measuring stick for overall potential than IQ? I submit to you it is EQ. Emotional quotient. Or emotional intelligence. My guest today is an expert and cites that emotional intelligence as the single biggest predictor of our personal and professional success. Scott Allender is an expert in global leadership and organizational development. Along with co-hosting The Evolving Leader podcast, he regularly teaches Enneagram workshops and conducts typing interviews and emotional intelligence assessments for individuals and teams who seek to become more radically self-aware and cognizant of the impact they have on the world. His new book is titled, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success. Let me candidly offer to you that my inspiration for this show is my own journey of becoming more…much more…emotionally intelligent. In the past I thought I was, as most emotionally unintelligent people believe. I let some things I was good at, like controlling my emotional expression and my social awareness trick me into thinking I was emotionally intelligent. And the truth that finally reared its ugly head was that I was very emotionally unintelligent. Join me as we change some paradigms and give some hope to what you can become. The most successful individuals deeply connect with their authentic selves, understand what they truly want, and align their pursuits with those values. 2. EQ is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions and the emotions of those around you. It involves self-regulation, motivation, empathy, self-expression, self-perception, interpersonal relationships, decision-making, and stress management. 3. Your body, heart, and brain all provide valid information; integrating them is essential rather than favouring one. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, body scans, breath work, and yoga can help realign these elements and improve well-being and success. Did you know only around 15% of people experience true self-awareness? Even more surprising, in the same study, researchers found that the more self-aware someone thinks they are, the opposite is likely to be true! When Scott Allender shared this info with me in a recent conversation, I was floored! I just had to hear more about how self-awareness relates to our emotional health and how both of those pieces relate to success. In his new book, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, Scott uses one of my favorite tools, the Enneagram, to help you move towards emotional health in a way that makes sense for your personality and sets you up for success. Listen in as Scott and I talk about: Why your emotional intelligence (EQ) is more important than your IQ when it comes to success How the tools provided in the enneagram help us get back to who we are made to be What it looks like for each Enneagram type to be functioning at a high level of self-awareness (and what it looks like when we're not self-aware!) The role our spiritual life plays in our emotional intelligence Scott Allender is the co-host of The Evolving Leader podcast and author of The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success. Scott is an expert in global leadership who regularly teaches enneagram workshops and lives in Nashville. Favorite quotes: “Only 13-15% of people are truly self aware and the more self aware somebody thinks they are the opposite is likely to be true.” “Your IQ might get you in the door. Your EQ is going to determine whether or not you stay inside the room or get invited back. Our EQ is our IQ at its testing point” “Until we do the work of cultivating this level of awareness we are often operating on autopilot.” “The studies say that more than 70% of our success is directly attributed to emotional intelligence.” “What is common to all types is really getting connected to the body, heart, and head.” Teaching Series from Remaining You While Raising Them: Habits The Tipping Point (23:47) Links to great things we discussed: Scott Allender Website The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success Scott Allender Instagram Scott Allender Twitter Scott Allender LinkedIn The Evolving Leader Podcast Taylor Swift Chris Stapleton Yellowstone Rocky Creed III Move: How the New Science of Body Movement Can Set Your Mind Free Whiplash God Really Loves Us Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer Order your copy of Remaining You While Raising Them here. When author and therapist Dan Allender met Mark Driscoll in 1998, he hoped the two might share building space for their respective ministries. While conversations remained cordial, it didn't take long for Allender to realize he and Mark aimed to build entirely different institutions -- Allender, a school for healing and trauma care, and Mark, a faith community with the aspirations of Babel. Narcissism would keep the two from building on a common foundation. Thirty years later, Allender joins host Mike Cosper for an honest conversation about where that narcissism led and how Mars Hill Church and the city of Seattle suffered under its dogmatism. With incisive yet gentle wisdom, Allender opens the aperture beyond Mars Hill to discuss how trauma creates wounds on which narcissism thrives, how the numbness of anger can lead to isolation, and how the very real joy of spiritual connection can leave hurting people confused and ashamed after the structures they've trusted crumble. If you've experienced spiritual abuse or you desire deeper honesty and humility in ministry, this bonus episode offers a foundational conversation about how to face trauma, how to identify unhealthy leadership patterns, and how to resist the siren call of sin that lures Christians to greatness without cost.
