SEASON 2 - EPISODE 112 - DAN LEMMON - VFX Supervisor VFX Supervisor Dan Lemmon (THE BATMAN, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, AVATAR) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Expanding upon our collection of conversations with filmmakers who worked on THE BATMAN, Dan is more than eager to discuss his work on the film, and he breaks down his team's contributions to the Batmobile chase sequence and the look of the film as a whole. We also discuss the value of shooting references for the VFX department, and Dan reveals his reasoning for advocating to shoot as much as possible in-camera. We later learn how VFX houses are adapting to deliver their work at the same quality under tightening budgets, and we reflect on how the pace of innovation in the field has changed over Dan's career. Dan also explains how motion capture technology works and how it's evolved to allow for films like AVATAR and the recent PLANET OF THE APES trilogy to exist as envisioned by their directors. Towards the end, we reflect on the modern trend towards naturalism and the diminishment of theatricality in how stories are told cinematically. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!! Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects Save Money & Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions By Going To https://rocketmoney.com/rejects Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Review, Easter Eggs, & Ending Explained! Greg Alba joins Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon (Cinepals) for their reaction after they covered Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, War For The Planet Of The Apes, And 1968 Planet Of The Apes! The story takes place 300 years later. The world is now ruled by apes, and humans have been reduced to a primitive state. The protagonist, Noa, is a young chimpanzee on a quest to find the truth about his world and his people. He discovers an ancient human artifact that could change everything—technology that could give apes the upper hand in their struggle against the remaining humans. The antagonist, Proximus Caesar, a power-hungry bonobo, wants to use the human technology to rule over all apes, resembling the Tony Soprano of the ape world, only with more fur and less pasta. Noa sets out on a journey to find the truth about the artifact and his people, meeting a colorful cast of characters along the way, including Nova, a feral human girl who becomes Noa's companion; Raka, an orangutan who helps Noa on his quest; and Trevathan, a human advisor to Proximus Caesar. The twist reveals that Proximus Caesar is a descendant of Caesar, the original leader of the ape revolution, akin to Darth Vader of the ape world, only with more fur and less breathing problems. In the climax, Noa and his allies face off against Proximus Caesar and his army in a battle reminiscent of "The Lord of the Rings" meets "Planet of the Apes," but with more bananas and less jewelry. Noa defeats Proximus Caesar and destroys the human technology, preventing a new era of ape dominance, and becomes the new leader of the apes, restoring peace. THE PLANET OF THE APES series has become an institution. For whatever reason, audiences get a kick out of seeing intelligent apes taking over the world. With the 2011 reboot film, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the series took off once more after being dormant for many years. The fourth film in the reboot, THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2024), was recently released to some acclaim.Intelligent chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) sees his village destroyed and his clan taken prisoner by renegade apes. He goes off to save all he can. On his journey, he is joined by Raka (Peter Macon), a Bornean orangutan, and Mae (Freya Allan), a human, and their journey leads them to Proximus (Kevin Durand) who has set up a coastal ape city where Noa's clan may have been taken to.The film is directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, inspired by the novel by Pierre Boulle. Besides Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, and Kevin Durand, the film's cast includes William H. Macy, Dichen Lachman, and Travis Jeffery. Receiving good reviews from critics and audiences alike, your co-hosts take a look at the latest film in the franchise and gives their thoughts.

Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield and The Batman, joins the Planet of the Apes franchise with this 2014 installment. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is without a doubt a new highpoint for the series. The amazing Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, with Toby Kebbell joining as the villainous ape Koba. A bevy of wonderful human actors also appear in this production, including Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman. The Visitors have almost nothing but praise for this movie, which goes even further than the previous film in reinvigorating this franchise for the 21st century. And speaking of this century, The Visitors pick the actors they'd like to see show up in the newest Ape film, coming in 2024. Download this episode so you can listen too!

Prior to its release, no one quite knew what to make of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. But after it became one of 2011's biggest surprise hits, it was clear just how much life was left in the decades-old sci-fi franchise. With its sequel, returning star Andy Serkis and director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) raised the emotional stakes and spectacle even higher. Jason from Binge Movies makes his long-awaited Franchise Detours debut to dig into 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. We'll discuss what Reeves -- who, most recently, put his stamp on The Batman -- brings to the franchise, Serkis' stunning (and awards-worthy) lead performance as Caesar, and why Dawn doesn't receive the credit it deserves. William Hoy ACE, Tyler Nelson, Will Files, Douglas Murray THE BATMAN post production team of editors Bill Hoy and Tyler Nelson, along with supervising sound editors Will Files and Doug Murray, are justifiably proud of the film they've made. In breaking the mold of the superhero archetype, they achieved director Matt Reeves' vision of a noir murder mystery that's more in the vein of classis 70's cinema than the glossy blockbusters of the 21st century. Adding to this feat is the fact that they were forced to shut down one month into production only to return to action in a much more restrictive model of collaboration than they were used to. In spite of those challenges, audiences and critics alike have responded in a big way to the remarkably fresh take on DC Films' dark knight. The story of THE BATMAN begins two years into his crimefighting legacy, forgoing the usual origin story elements often found in super hero tales, and follows Batman / Bruce Wayne as he ventures into Gotham City's underworld where he must track a sadistic killer prone to leaving behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clearer, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the city. WILLIAM HOY ACE William Hoy is known for his work on NO WAY OUT (1987), DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990), THE BONE COLLECTOR (1999), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014) and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017). TYLER NELSON Tyler Nelson is known for his assistant editing work on THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010), THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011) and GONE GIRL (2014); as well as his editing work on MINDHUNTER (2017-2019) and SHADOW AND BONE (2021). WILL FILES Will Files is known for his work on CLOVERFIELD (2008), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017), STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS (2017) and VENOM (2018). DOUGLAS MURRAY Douglas Murray is known for his work on THE ENGLISH PATIENT (1996), CLOVERFIELD (2008), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017) and ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (2018). Our eighth consecutive trek through the Forbidden Zone finds us excavating, of all places, an overgrown San Francisco which is, you guessed it!, infested with murderous primates. (You'd think we'd have learned our lesson by now but...alas...) Listen to our introduction as we introduce a new recurrent segment of the show: the Blue Plate Special. In this initial offering, we load up on a trio of neo-noirs (Body Heat, Trouble in Mind, and Reminiscence) that has us pondering both past modes of the form and how it might exactly realize itself in the years to come. Upon finally arriving to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, yet another exploration of chimpanzee-on-human violence is had, this time in relation to how this new age of CGI at once adds to and subtracts from the potential of the series that refuses to go gentle into that good night. Part 2 of the Planet of the Apes Trilogy Breakdown!
For this week's main podcast review, I am once again joined by Josh Parham & Dan Bayer and together we are completing the "Planet Of The Apes" reboot trilogy with this 2014 installment (which also fits nicely into our 2014 retrospective) "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes." Once again starring Andy Serkis, Toby Kebbell (who receives a much more substantial role as the film's memorable antagonist) and being joined this time by a human cast comprising of Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and Gary Oldman, this is a sequel which truly expands on the first film in all of the best ways. Listen to our review and hear our thoughts on how we think this film has held up over the years and how it fits in with the rest of the trilogy. How do systems pressure your characters to change? This is Part Four (!!) of our Five Part Epic Exploration into antagonists forces and sources of conflict. In this episode we explore "system/world/society" antagonists. While stereotypically associated with science-fiction, these sources of conflict are found across genres. To that end, we talk MINORITY REPORT, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, MUDBOUND, and THE LOBSTER - with a special mention of high school movies. We continue refining our tools surrounding antagonists/sources of conflict: obstacles, pressure, enablers, pushers, pullers, education and thwarting. We especially focus on how the pressures of the system/world/society force characters to either submit to the system, overthrow it or escape it; and how framing all of your characters’ journeys in relation to the rules of the world they inhabit can lead to a thematically strong story. The VAULT-CAST: The Official Podcast of THE B-MOVIE FILM VAULT
In this podcast, Jordan and the ironically named "Silent" Steve march into the forbidden zone and discuss PLANET OF THE APES. We talk about the original films, briefly touch upon the Tim Burton remake debacle, and the decent 2011 reboot, then sing praises for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. (Easily one of the best films of 2014!)After that, we unveil our first ever CULTURAL MOVIE EXCHANGE where we share (or inflict) films on one another that we haven't seen before! In our first round, I had to watch the dark, joyless, and utterly depressing THE ROAD, while Steve had to suffer through a quirky obscurity called MONSTER DOG! (Featuring Alice Cooper in the lead role!)To cap things off, we discussed many of the news and rumors from San Diego Comic Con and look towards 2015, which will hopefully be an amazing year for all of us nerds! Thanks for listening!

This week, it’s APES APES APES APES, as Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes prompts our resident Planet Of The Apes superfans to look back on the long-running series, from its grim, heady 1970s longueurs to all the tie-in products that kept kids absorbed between films that likely went over their heads. Sex Tape has us talking about America’s awful record with sex comedies for or about adults, and wondering why it’s so hard for sex comedies to talk about sex in a remotely mature way. (Hee hee, “so hard.”) Our game this week, In A World, asks contestants to identify films by listening to trailer snippets—which in one case, happened in literally two seconds. And we close, as always, with our competitive-recommendation segment, 30 Seconds To Sell.
A straight up posse including Daley, Jamie, Bart, Jeff and Jess tackle another smart and exciting sci-fi yarn in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. The ladies theorize that Caesar is secretly Harry Potter, the guys revel in the dark camp of the classic films. They debate the awards worthiness of motion capture performances and whether today's kids can still appreciate a classic like Dumbo. Nemo the puppy takes a shit in the middle of the recording.
